I can remember back in the day when I first set my eyes on the UX50. What a beauty I thought and even now, 6 years on, I still look at it and think what if they had continued the line.
I thought the clam-shell design was very functional with its swivel screen and camera. Everything on it just seemed so right. Imagine how one would look now with the technology of this day and age. A big bright OLED screen filling out the front of the device, great graphics, blistering speed with a slim form factor and space for a full sized physical keyboard etc.
I really believe they made a mistake when they announced that they would discontinue the device. If they were to make a new similar device I know for sure that I be one of the first to snap it up.
So what do you guys think of a new PDA/phone coming out with a clam-shell, swivel screen action design?

More Info

It would really be nice if this were true: "256 ROM, 1280 RAM"
---
I think they meant to say "128 mb ROM".
It looks very similar to "upcomming imate ultimate 7150"
--
Hope the external screen has a caller ID. This was one of the biggest gripes for the Universal.
I also see no call accept / reject buttons on the outside. Does this mean that for accepting a new call the lid will have to be opened??. But I hope I am wrong.
The screen looks flush with the casing just as on the HTC Touch. Possibily this also has touch flo techlology.
The design looks attractive unlike the Universal which was a bit on the ugly side.

"I also see no call accept / reject buttons on the outside"
suspect it's because it's more of ucpc then a phone
and about ultimate then hope they do get released to give htc some serious compatition which is always healthy
but i still have a fear that they are vapor
4 inch wide screen 800 x480 pxls will have 16M colors rite....
If it is ....then it will be fun.....may be the first windows PPC offering 16M colors...

I checked out the slide and it says 256 ROM and 128 (!) RAM, not 1280. Too bad, but not the end of the world. I'm stilling loving this device
seems like an interesting device.. may not be windows mobile or android but blackberries are very cool.. i wonder if the storm will actually make its mark in our world...
what do you guys think???
P.S. please no negativity or attacks thank you..
If one comes out for AT&T, I do plan on getting one from work and testing it out.
the wm much better

I would get a Storm but not transfer to Verizon from AT&T for testing and messing around. I just sold my Bold and it was a lot better in my opinion then the other Blackberry models. I really liked the bold but didn't stick around because of the limited applications and customization. In addition, it lacks a full email client, BIS just doesn't cut it for me for personal usage and I really don't like how it handled email even with BES. I also had an iPhone and iPhone 3G and after jailbreaking it wasn't to bad and I liked it, I still believe its touch screen is the best out there. All three device types are for three different type of people and although I like to play with a Blackberry I don't see myself switching.
Blackberry Storm Comment
I got a Storm 2 weeks ago and I'm VERY happy with it.
Automatic actualizing of important System-Progs, all Business Progs I need, also a quick and safe handling.
I'm only missing a Navi-Prog for install complete like IGO.
Hello all,
I have been thinking about a new design for a windows mobile phone that I had in my mind and today I managed to put it on my blog at http://sollers.wordpress.com/2009/02/19/ideal-mobile-design-dual-slide-out-mobile/

Honestly, I do not know how to design a phone, nor I know what software to use, but I did some simple design using powerpoint and hopefully you would understand what I had in my mind.
Let me know what you have in your mind and what you think of this kind of phone, if this comes to market. Will that be useful really for consumers?

Dear abdelamine,
Thanks for your reply
What is the model name of the sharp handset you put in there?

Definitely an attractive concept on paper.
The practical downside of a "dual slider" like that is thickness, though. You'd probably wind up with a bulkier device than you'd like.
I think a good, solid touchscreen really reduces the need for a number pad, and since you've put a nice, full-face widescreen on there, I think I'd get by fine without one.
Essentially I would like to have dual touch interface,
1. Touch screen display
2. Touch screen pad (when you slide down it shows number pad)
3. Touch screen keyboard (when you slide left it shows full querty)
With no buttons apart from the four standard buttons below the display. I hope the two touch based screens (display & input) will help reduce the weight and need of having hardware buttons as keys.
I don't own an iphone but it looks like not just the iphone suffers from the death grip. Also apple is giving user free cases or bumpers which is cool of apple to do. Source link....http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/16/apple-to-give-away-free-bumpers-to-iphone-4-users/

So its "cool" of Jobs to do what he should have done in the FIRST place and give away parts that fix the phone? After ignoring the issue for months? Something tells me he should have done that in the first place.
If your EVO came without a battery cover (Optional accessory $29.95!) and the battery "occasionally" fell out interrupting your calls, would it be "cool" if because of negitive publicity ( consumer reports) they started giving it away for free? or would you have expected the cover to have come with the phone in the first place?
But hey coolaid is great and the cups are soooooooo shiny mmmmmmmm
Just couldn't resist using photoshop today!

Good afternoon, community!
Some time ago I started to think about mobile devices with full keyboards - but all what I found were tablets like 2 in 1 and they still didn’t looked good enough. I remembered my Nokias 9 series with beautiful S80 on board, what I have used to write course assignment at Uni, to write job applications, etc. By the same time I’ve been working in retail and used to sell this kind of devices - as well as legends like Qtec 9000. People loved it. So, I’ve decided to move forward!
I have created a concept of smartphone in notebook form-factor:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
3d model can viewed here https://skfb.ly/RHDK
Inspired by Psion 5 series, so it would have a proper QWERTY, and as Nokia 9 series, it would have 2 screens - inside and outside.
According to concept, it should work on modified version of android with access to linux apps, with factory root access and open boot loader for community ROMs.
I have contacted some ODM factories to get estimation for production, and got some advice on cost reduction, to edit concept - for available mainboard and screens - FHD, because its too expensive to produce specific ones.
So, if there is anyone who is interested in such product - you are very welcome leave your suggestions, ideas and comments!
There is a massive work still to be done before I would go for crowdfunding, so any help would be appreciated!
What type of keyboard would prefferable, laptop type, when screen is on the lid, or sliding out? Or anything else?
