Hi Fellas.
One reason why I'm holding back on my HD2 purchase is the lack of video calling. I use this feature not only to see/show the other party, but so that I can make use of the extra video-calling minutes that my telco provides. There are alot of times I actually use video-calling, but then turn off my speaker and use it as a standard call.
So.. I'm wondering if the HD2 can do that.. perhaps using the primary camera, since it doesn't have a secondary one. Or.. perhaps one way viewing?
If the current HD2 phone canvas doesn't support, do U think putting a Topaz canvas might unleash video calling?
Thanks for any replies.
bump........
It's only got one camera, and that is at the back. So no.

Erm.. that's the point of this thread...
I was wondering if there were some other way.. through using other phone canvas or something...
Thanks anyway.

one of these is the brightness sensor for the display dimmer, but what is the other one, maybe a second camera?
It's not a video-call camera, it's a proximity sensor.
The question now is not whether there can be 2-way video calling...that's impossible because of the hardware. No point thinking about anything like a mirror to do the video call, it's a dumb solution....not possible as of now anyway.
It's whether if it accepts/makes video calls in the first place, without the need for an outgoing video stream.
I dunno, since I dun own a HD2 yet. Those who do might be able to help ya.

Exactly what I'm talking about. Glad to know someone on the same page as me.
Well.. perhaps only time will tell.. when custom ROMs become widespread for this device.
hey,
you are right. you dont need a second cam for video calling. i have used this feature too but on an official supported device and its possible to switch cams. but i know there are devices that only have that camera on the back and support video calling.
best thing for you is to wait till the custom roms will supply. its only a matter of software, hardware is already given.i hope someone who is able to will denelop it
has anyone out there, a program or a programmer can make this a video calling phone?
is it possible to attached a second camera? similar to webcam?
The question here is "is it possible or not".. I am sure people will find use even without a second camera. I use video on my Diamond not to sho my pretty face but usually when I want to show a beatyfull place when I'm traveling or something. The request in my opinion is absolutely valid.
Rejoice & Check This out!
Check this out guys! Software for Video Conferencing is readily available for HTC HD2 courtesy of iVisit. You only need to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee for the service. But if it works for video conferencing utilizing the Primary Camera of the HD2, it definately should work with a cab for video calling in 3G. Besides, we are talking here of a Smart Phone with 1Gh processor and over 500MB of Memory. There are loads of web cams out there which this device could support. So come on HTC developers, Roll over your sleves and give us a cab to make the HD2 a real contender for the title of best phone around. For those who want iVisit, just follow this link: http://www.ivisit.com/download.:D
Well, for a start, someone could try cooking a ROM with a Topaz/Rhodium phone canvas in. I don't see why there should be a problem in doing that. Resolution is the same..
Then just swap the camera when making the video call. Secondary cam feature will result with an error (obviously.. coz it doesn't exist..) but the primary camera might actually work.
Any chefs wanna try this out?
Hi MasK, you're from singapore too?!? Starhub giving you free video call minutes as well? Singtel gives me a few every month which I don't use up anymore unlike previously with my omnia.
That's why I'm very interested in this too. I have been asking this question since last year, even before I bought my HD2 this January.
Maybe we can contact zenkinz to help us with a test case.
He is a good rom chef (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621699) who is also from SG, haha!

Great finding, thanks!

All the screenshots so far have the notification bar cropped out, Google must be cooking up something so big with the notification bar that even the leakers can't bare to reveal yet.
One bad thing though, if the rumours is right then Google will release a new phone around Christmas. I guess this will be with more powerful hardware which will be able to run honeycomb or something.
So then requirments might increase siginficantly to 3.0, which means i need a new phone soon
Well our Nexus's are ready now for Ginger & co.

It's not a rumor, Nexus Two (or whatever they call it) it's going to be announced probably
in November 8th. Manufactured by Samsung. It's the same phone as the Galaxy S
but a little thinner and with a curved back.
Eric Schmidt: "Initially, Google felt that they needed to build a device to help Android along so they worked with HTC to create the Nexus One handset. Schmidt says: “The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn't have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: 'Ok, it worked. Congratulations - we're stopping'. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale."

Bollocks! I knew I should've waited!! I loved my Nexus One until it was stolen. I loved the fact that everything came there first, as far as updates etc. It was so obviously Google's own phone. I didn't like that I had to use Dialer-One and Launcher Pro though (not crazy about stock Android dialler).
I love my Galaxy S's hardware, but I'm not loving this RFS stuff. How can I recommend a phone to people if they're going to have to lagfix it.. How do I know some OTA update isn't going to break it a year down the line and then they all start phoning me ?!
A Galaxy-S Nexus would be cool I reckon ..

Well the Galaxy S line also has support for 720p video recording, but the Nexus S does not. So who knows. I was checking out the teardown from ifixit and it doesn't look like there are a lot of components on the board itself. I could be terribly wrong, but it looked very minimalistic and simple.

I think Radio is not there...
But i am wondering why all people asks things that google never advertised...
The phone doesn't record on 720p, doesn't have radio etc etc...
We all must understand that Nexus S is most of a developer phone and google sell it to show what pure gingerbread can do....
So please to search reasons to buy or not....
All people asking for facillities that don't exist....
This is the phone....
If you want a phone to shoot 720p video, to have radio, to have led notification, to have metallic body etc etc, this isn't your phone...
If you want a phone with quick and very good support for Google and community, a phone with pure Android gingerbread, a full unlocked and Open Source phone to play with, then this phone is the only choice you have...
Both the N1 and NS have the same chip (BCM4329) which has both FM TX & RX on the chip. I sure in time they will get the FM radio working.

I am wondering why people jump in with non-responsive posts. People ask questions because they don't know something and haven't found the answer by other means (assuming they looked). How does a response like yours help move the conversation forward.
The phone has a thousand features in it, and only a couple of dozen advertised. Should we assume that the 900+ features that aren't advertised don't exist and therefore are a reason not to buy the phone.
The Nexus One hardware supported FM radio reception, but Google did not put it in there; we had to wait for the hackers to add it. See this post.
It's certainly reasonable, in my opinion, to ask if the Nexus S, which many think is basically just a slightly modified Galaxy S (which supports FM radio) can do so, and if it's as simple as adding an apk from another Galaxy S device.
To the original poster, I don't know the answer, but if I were interested enough to do a little research, I'd google the ifixit teardown of the Nexus S, then see what radio chip it uses, and if that particular chip has FM radio capability. If it does, it's just a matter of time before some enterprising dev adds it in. Probably not as simple as installing an apk, there are most likely driver and/or kernel changes necessary to get it functioning.
edit: I see others have already looked that up. I've NEVER used FM radio on my N1 or SGS, but nice to know that it might be there someday, just in case.

Because the nexus one was said to not have radio, but after long we now have fully working f m radio on the nexus one. So why not do the same with the nexus s?
Yes. the Nexus S indeed has FM capabilities, courtesy, the BCM4329 chip inside
And do you think that with some code it will be possible to Nexus S video recording 720p as Nexus One ?

Yes, and no. There's allegedly a bandwidth bottleneck in the hardware on the NS that the GS doesn't have; so while 720p is possible, it will be at fewer frames per second if/when we get it.
for as cool as it can be to have the FM radio like the SGS... i still ponder what is the point of it?
i know i know, just for the sake of having it, and the very rare occassion you will actually use, when you use your wired headphones....
but i've owned the SGS for 4+ month, i've only used it ONCE in the entire time, and it was only to check if it was working or not, and the people complaining the FM radio sounded like MONO (which was actually a code bug, and not hardware deficiency)
in this age of MP3 and AC3 and POT CAST, Streaming Radio stations (3G/WiFi) play backs... a good old authentic FM radio (which will not work if you are not using a wired headphone) has fallen into a "novelty" category, instead of a "cool feature" category as it was in the past.
if they could make the FM radio work without the wired headphones, and be able to Stream the FM audio via bluetooth, then that will really be Enjoyable

LOL, I just disagreed with you on something else in another thread, but on this topic, we're on the same page. I've also only used my FM radio on the SGS once, and just to see if it worked.
Now, if it offered HD radio service and some of the offset digital channels, it might get more use out of me. Seriously, I'd be more likely to use a built-in radio if it were AM for news and talk radio. For music, too many better options available to us on the data-connected phone.
Still, if the hardware's there, nice to be able to use it if you wanted.

It would be nice to transmit your music to the FM - for the car stereo.

You will not need to send phone anywhere and it is working on latest update.
It will be a paid service so will not be posted on forums unless XDA allows me to like how they do for the HTC unlockers...
Only like 5 bucks and free to FRM donators...not much...last I am speaking about it so I do not get in trouble with XDA
If I ever decide to get the droid 2 global over the desire z, I will definitely pay 5 bucks for this.
The only thing stooping me to getting a D2G is battery life
so awesome!! I would love this, so it should be as simple as a flash? I would deff pay for this!
If we already have the new update for the global would it still work to flash this rom?
We also have to already have it network unlocked with the subsidy code right?
How do I become an FRM donator and help fund this awesome development?
You go to the team defuse website and they have a link on how to donate, and they also keep you updated with news there

Is the T-mobile in the US? If so, the phone doesn't support T-mobile 3G bands anyway.
So if this is the patch released on FRM then it appears to not work with T-Mobile USA as I just tried it without success.
I would really like to see the evidence that this works at all.
A couple of screenshots with no data connection showing is hardly convincing.
I am well aware that it is possible to do, I have it working on my D2G with both T-Mobile and AT&T SIMs with Edge on T-Mobile and Edge,3G and HSPA all working on AT&T using the DroidBandUnlock method.
Their method makes modifications to the radio and I don't see how it is possible to do this via system level patches.

I've seen the vaneworks, and the onemoreface, now there's this one. Nice find. I haven't tried any of these, but they all will have the same issue (in varying degrees) with the g2. It is best explained on the compatability page of the vaneworks product. The g2 camera is a little far from the edges of the phone, so you may not get a full image.
Also, supposedly, the light is low when using smaller mirrors.
Hopefully someone will try these products and post back.

Hopefully someone will try these products and post back.

i can verify that the vainworks stand works for g2. camera is only a bit off. in camera mode...you see a little of your phone...but i can verify in video chat via tango...it just fit. i mean...i see like a 10th of an inch of my phone. cant even notice. landscape is a bit of a hassle though as the camera is more towards the middle rather than top heavy. its ok though. my girls hd2 can only do lanscape cuz her phone is right in center with regards to either edge of the phone.
also, is there a catch to this iseeu? catch.. such as camera position like the vainworks stand has? will it work with all cameras no matter what location it is on phone? it must be adjustable.
From the videos I've seen its very adjustable
@havikx:
Can you post self portrait pics taken on G2/vainworks in portrait and landscape? (see vain works compatability page for examples http://vainworks.com/compatibility-chart/). (maybe post on the vain works thread)
On the adaptability factor for all of these products, if the mirrors are "over the top" of the phone (instead of "around the side") then you will be upside down. Not sure which apps have the setting to flip the image...

i will if i can get around to it. actual performance is based on video call. i know the camera app shows a little more of the phone depending on resolution settings.
my girl uses Tango for video calling on her HD2. she has a button that supposed to flip which camera is displaying. being she only has one camera...what does this button do? flip the image.

Yes, it flips the image. I just tested this. I have 2 hd2's and tangoed between them and could flip the image sent to the other phone with that button.
Wow just got it and its a total rip off lol. I won't bother making a video it sucks so bad.

Might be good to see. Sorry it didn't work. Maybe you can sell it to someone with an iPhone 3Gs? Too bad, because it looked like a really slick little package.
huh... just saw this...
1. iSeeU for iPhone 3G/3GS is exclusive to iPhone 3G/3Gs. If you use this to other phones, it won't work.

Smoke and mirrors, without the smoke! ;-)

it looks good but yeah i doubt you can get the full image of the camera as it is lower down
With such tiny little mirrors doesn't really seem like it could capture the full image, and what a pain to use, I imagine you would have to detach it to carry it around or use the keyboard?
But also seems like someone confirmed it doesn't work. Novel Idea
Hey guys. Tmo has this phone online for free, but the web only offer ends today. I'd like to buy it, but just need to know about the camera quality to replace our recently lost camera. My wife will only let me get it if I assure her we won't have to buy a separate camera. This would be our first android phones, though I have an Acer iconia a500 tablet.
How is the picture quality? Is it slow to snap like some of the honeycomb tablets? Does it have a flash?
How is the video capture quality?
Can someone post a sample picture and video clip here?
As I said, the free web offer ends today, so if the camera quality is good, I want to order them tonight.
Thanks,
EB
PS. Is music playing quality good too? My wife will be using it to replace her mp3 player that just died.

What phone? Did you read the specs? Most any phone with a 5mp+ camera should take really nice photos.

Sorry. The t-mobile g2x. Isn't this the correct forum for that phone?
The cnet review said the picture quality didn't meet their standards. Guess I'm looking for confirmation.

An 8mp camera should give you great pictures, and it records 1080p video. You can always use 3rd party camera apps too. Sounds like a good deal if they are free, imo.

Th G2x camera is pretty disappointing. There are a number of threads around here discussing the issue. I don't think you should choose this phone if the camera is a real priority.
Music playing is excellent, better than most.
Thanks for the info.. I was just about to order them online, but like the saying goes.. they screw you in the drive-thru.
I was thinking the Free web-offer (exp today) with the 49.99/line for 2 lines plan was an awsome deal. However, it seems you can't get that plan online, only in the stores, and you can't get the free web offer in the store..
If want to get a new phone, the way I've found is to go and look in a store. Use one, play with it, move on to the next. Try them all if needed. Then if you can find a better deal for the one you want online, you know exactly which one to order.

You do realize you are in a T-Mo LG G2x specific forum, right?
Do I have to be using one in order to post here?

No, of course not. I was just trying to help.
Carry on.
LOVE my g2x camera, it's amazing. (with the back cover off, lol)
But a few modifications to the battery cover fixed that 3:-}
For what its worth consumer reports actually rated the G2X as having the best smartphone camera.

Mine takes fantastic photos. Haven't done much with videos but the still shots are awesome considering they were taken WITH A PHONE!!! Lol
Here are a couple I've taken with mine. The 2 cloud photos were taken with my G2X and then edited on the phone with Picsay Pro.

Nice shots!
I wonder if Consumer Reports still feels the same way after the GB update.
I'm not trying to bash the phone here, I honestly think the G2x camera is flawed. On mine every still photo is kind of blurry or soft focused, and with an overall hazy tint. Video at both 1080 and 720 suffers from obvious block pixelization, the more motion in the scene the worse the image appears. I have tried cleaning the glass on both sides of my cover and observed very little difference in still images.
If I'm not mistaken there was at least one thread here where this was discussed. Also, the consensus from those who have both seems to be that the Sensation has many flaws, but it's camera provides superior images to the G2x's.
ETA:It looks like I have grease or something on the lens in this video, but I didn't. I must confess I don't remeber if I was using the GB OTA camera or the 1.5 LG cam from this forum. I can say I haven't seen any better video out of my phone since I got it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNyepSKmyuI

I've been telling people this for years - remove that glass on the battery cover! Its like a dirt magnet. Never understood why you would put glass over a camera lens... I'm using an exented battery without the camera lens glass cover. The pictures are night and day.
Trying to delete this post - XDA Prem App has gone loco.

Thanks for posting the consumer reports link. More proof that LG ripped us all off, whether or not we all realize it.
CS is praising the feature set of the G2x camera as much or more than anything else. Those features disappeared with the "update"

Yea I have to agree with you here. The camera app in Froyo was very nice and very useful at the same time. Too bad they didn't support it with their gingerbread release. Granted the camera app in 2.3.3 is more in line with their marketing the phone as vanilla android, but it does feel like they removed a feature, or at least downgraded it.
