Canadian ROMs - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Can anyone post a list of all the Sapphire/HTC Magic Roms that are based on Rogers/Canadian sets? I know there is the HOFO ION, and HOFO Rom, but what else is there?

Any 32a roms will work on ours.. just avoid 32b and mytouch3g roms

I've been using the:
[ROM][32A][Nov07] MyHero 2.0.5 with Official SenceUI on HTC Kernel 2.6.27
with my Rogers HTC magic with no problems at all. Just important to write down your APN settings before you start so that when your done you can re-add them.
You still have access to the apps store from rogers and I've downloaded lots of apps, SMS texts, and e-mails.

How is the performance of that ROM?
What about speed of the video's FPS and time to take a picture?
When im using the original rogers build, it is very slow to take picture. And the video taken is low on FPS. Need to be above 25 fps to see a smooth video.

I understand any 32A ROMs will work but I want a rogers based one because it has some things other ROMs don't.
If you want performance go for the HOFO ION ROM, its very very good, but if you want stability then speed HOFO ROM is good, camera is fast, and as for video I don't know what FPS it is, but its smooth when I take it.

ok. going to try it out.
thanks.

Info to help chose custom ROM?

Hey,
I've just stumbled upon this community and I'm really grateful to see so many developers working on HTC Android devices. That said, I would like to ask for some info on the custom ROMs that work on Magic (features, differences, etc.).
Could outline them quickly or point to somewhere I can read that info?
Thank you so much!

Let me try:
Haykuro6.0r1 ROM:It's an HTC no Brand ROM, it still has problems like:volume of the micrphone(for the otherone on the phone it's difficult to hear you), and it's slower than the others.
Roger's ROM: it's still an HTC no Brand, but has some ION's improvements, that means it's faster than the 6.0r1, it has some apps pre-installed, microphone bug fixed, and other stuff (read the thread).
Hero ROM:it has Rosie, so it's graphically ahead of the others ROM, but it's not released yet by HTC, it means that it's incredible slow (compared to the others), and has lot of bugs (again: read the thread for more info)
France ROM: Never tried, but it should be (the releaser forgive me if I'm wrong) a Vodafone ROM , with ION's improvements, and JF kernel, that means it's fast, but you can't install HTC2s apps.
Every ROM's should ( not sure about it, again: read each thread) have tethering enebled, and everything working (except for the bluetooth in the Hero's ROM, that is not working yet)
If I've forget other ROMs sorry for that, but it's quite late here!
I'm sure somebody else could be more specific...
Thanks!
So what are the advantages of each ROM when compared to the default one? What's the difference between ION and the current ROM?
Also, just to make sure, rooting and installing custom ROMs doesn't void the warranty, does it?
XDA user simon walker created a build database for the Dream. Maybe he would be willing to do the same with Sapphire.

Thanks again!
So for battery life, speed and stability what would you suggest? (I need WiFi and A2DP too...)

Advice for a n00b please - best ROM for UK Vodafone Magic?

Hi all - subject line says it all.
I have a shiny UK Vodafone Magic turning up tomorrow and, hoping to save a bit of time, wanted to canvas the guys on here regarding their opinions of the best ROM to use on it, before I start experimenting. Have browsed the boards and it seems that the main issue with Hero ROMs is performance on the smaller RAM size. I would like as decent a UI experience as possible, but would prefer not to make my new toy unusably slow in my hunt to get that "hey, wow, shiny" UI factor.
Main important features for me (in order of importance):
* as full featured a browser as is possible
* PDA-type stuff (i.e. calendar etc)
* email, particularly Exchange connectivity
and only then
* shininess of UI!
Would I be best waiting for Jerpelea's new release before playing? Or am I better off leaving well enough alone and staying with the stock ROM (and get my Exchange fix through third party software)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

well mate for stability and performance you have the Ion R4 and European rom for Magic. they are based on google interface with few tweaks. Ion r4 has hero look over google base so its a no brainer why they work so well
the hero ports don't work so well for most but looks amazing my friend. i love the Hero V1.4 by fatal1ty as it looks amazing. for me however it has some major drawbacks main one being the lag. for me also after using for few days it seems to get worse and gradually grinds to a halt. the hero black is very similar to Hero 1.4 with a few apps missing. they woirk the same more or less. thats why jerp has started new build from scratch but that is a few days away yet so your choice in waiting........... the ion r4 and european roms are good to go and offer a bit more than standard voda rom.!
you choose..........thats my opinion!
I have the same phone as you.
I would not recommend this one "[Update 6-07]HTC Hero ROM for Magic by Fatal1ty"
It is very slow on our UK Vodafone magic's
Hero ROMs are slow because the original Hero rom was built for the HTC hero with 288mb RAM instead of your Vodafone Magic's 192mb.
SP france europe rom seems the best choise..
Got a UK Vodaphone model , Ion r4 works best.

i have a uk vodafone and 1.4 is NOT very slow on mine. it is slower than the standard rom, slower than ION r4 and slower than the european one
however
it is fine for me. it has a lot of very cool features - multi-touch, facebook, twitter and flikr integration with contacts and of course it looks fantastic.
having been on 1.4 from fatal1ty and currently on the ION rom i can say that i am moving back to 1.4 as it is so much cooler. i am going to get a class 6 sd card and see if this improves speed
Paul
The class 6 wont make a huge difference - I tried. However, depends on how willing you are to put up with lag.
Personally I'd recommend the Ion R4, OR get hold of the original ION rom (I got it from Android Bloggin Network - I'll post link later) and a Root for it, then I have a blazing fast ION stock rom, with Root, so you can customise as needed.
100% stable, and Damn fast.
I tried all the hero roms, but however good it looks is a bit cruddy when you hit 10+lag between apps etc.
My phone is usable, and does everything I need until Donut, which will bring many of the social network functions in a google supported form(google still target the G1 internally, so wont hit the ram restriction like the hero rom)

I think they were demonstrated at the google dev conference so assume they'll be there
Many thanks for the above, everyone.
To the Ion R4 advocates - do you mean from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523971
Also, is there a newb-proof guide to updating ROMS (I believe it needs to be rooted first?) and, perhaps more importantly, restoring your original ROM (ie. if you don't like the results)? Again, have punted around the forums and found a few guides but most of them seem to refer to other guides that I can't track down (i.e. they say something like "follow ABC's guide up to the reboot, then do XYZ", but have no idea where to find ABC or his/her guide).
nk02 Ion R4 or the SPF European ROM
PAUL
any chance of you tubing a vid of your fatality 1.4 in action mate i think alot of users are holding off rooting and hero build rom updating because so many complain of lag issues and freezing might be nice to see the speed in action

cool look foward to that if youve got time bud
I think Loccy has raised an interesting topic here. I am also a Vodafone UK HTC Magic user, willing to try some new ROMs with Hero's features, however what I really miss here is some sticky thread with complete step-by-step instructions of where and how to start with ROM flashing. I've been a heavy user of Windows Mobile devices some time ago, and also been playing with xda-dev any many different ROMs. But as far as I remember for each device-specific forum there was at least 2 or 3 sticky threads with complete n00b instructions. In this case it's a bit scattered all over the place and takes time to figure it all out and glue the pieces...
If I have time later I will try to create a guide - The information is there but absolutly agree it's hard to work out whats latest / correct info.
If not today then over next couple of days.
Hi newb alert here! Just to add a little to eva_d's point above (which would be great), as a newb n00b I'd find it really useful to know what the differences betwenn the different ROMs is.
I'm 99% I'm going to get a Magic on VF UK next month. The phone looks good and I like the idea of the open source OS so you can fiddle with what you get which is why I am here. I understand the OS on the VF UK magics is relatively lame. However, I am having trouble understanding what's the difference between fatal1ty's, nk02's and the smartphone euro one? I mean in terms of functionality. What difference does user see? Is it jthe UI? Functionality? Both? Are there any screenshots?
fatal1tys = nice but slow
nk02's = nice, fast, but what's the difference between the full and "lite" as a user? Compared to the stock ROM?
Euro = nice fast, but again, I'm not sure what I would be getting compared to what comes in the box? (btw French isn't a problem for me).
All the hero roms - currently having issues, good to play with but maybe not for everyday (unless jerpelas new rom out later is as good as hinted at...) Has multitouch browser and better music app
NK02 - good, based on the very fast Google ION rom - with a few extras
SFR - Good fast rom, french based but quick and stable
I use the stock ION rom, rooted with a few customisations. I managed to get the HERO camera working last night, working on the browser today, might have something to release (but I will need some help) later this week, depending on what the others release...
Fatal1ty - are you still there?
Jeperla - Looking forwards to version 005
If i was getting a new phone i would not get the VF one - i would go to orange and T mobile and look at what they are offering. The HTC hero looks very nice and it natively runs Rosie so why not just get that if that what you are after
remember the VF magic has even less RAM than the Magic provided by t-mobile - not too sure if that version is coming to uk
Paul
Note Rosie was not meant for a RAM shy device like the VF magic so it is going to struggle no matter what. it is a toss up between looks/functionality/speed so choose what is most important to you.
Looks = fatal1tys Rom
Speed = Ion
functionality varies depending on what you want - for me fatal1tys works so thats what i use

Additional n00b questions:
1) Do custom ROMs for Magic have full access to Android Market or installing apps would have to be manual after flashing new ROM?
2) How to revert original ROM? Is my understanding right that nandroid is a right tool for the job, ie. it dumps current ROM onto SD card and then allows to restore it? (just trying to glue the scattered pieces together
3) How does web browser work in various custom ROMs? I use my Magic mainly as an internet tablet for mobile browsing on the Tube or wherever, I very rarely use it for phone calls - would it be OK then to use custom ROM with some Hero features?

List of Modded roms please

hi ive just managed to root my phone after the 100th time! i have a hero theme on the phone supplied by fatality which is a bit slow for me. Can anybody supply links to some recommended roms please preferably very fast!
cheers guys
edit: forgot to add i have a uk vodafone magic with 32b board. cheers

i have seen those but would like to hear peoples opinions on the roms they have used in their magic and which they recommend
i think you have 32b version.. well yeah hero is slow. i had one i used Cyanogen roms.. its light.
well for 32a i have..i use hero rom.. its not fatality one. i dont know were i got it from. but works gr8. no wifi problems. sync works . everythig is perfect.. sometimes i feel that i am using HTC HERO..

I'm using this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538633
The best one I've tried so far
ok thanks for the replies! these all look good but anybody else have any preferences?
I'm using the same ROM as Malky1903. It's fast and stable and has some nice features. Root access, battery status on the lock screen, cpu overclocker (not really needed though), menu is 5 icons wide rather than 4 icons, and the home screen can be scrolled over 5 screens rather than 3. There are also other small enhancements like the animations (taken from the hero rom) and other tweaks that seem to make it run really nicely.
I've tried 2 Hero ROMs and have given up pretty quickly after both occasions - the 32B Magic just doesn't seem very capable on this ROMs IMHO.
I'm still looking for the perfect ROM but am going to leave it for a while I think. CyanogenMod v3.6.8 is pretty close - just need that Exchange sync to work and I will be very happy! There is some good stuff coming with all the new Donut threads appearing ... but it looks like we could be a few weeks from getting stable builds out of there yet.

I was wondering if there's any mileage in adding to the Wiki somewhere, so that there's a listing for each ROM and its specific feature list. Maybe even some kind of matrix with the common features all listed, and ticks or crosses depending on whether a particular ROM has it or not. For me, Exchange compatibility is absolutely, positively, crucial so there really isn't much point me flashing some of these ROMs to find it's not there. Having to trawl through the ROM's own specific thread on the forum (and often such things are not seen as important by others on the thread, so are not mentioned) to find such info is a real drag.

Any rom with multitouch+flash (non-Hero) for Roger's Magic?

Hey all. I got my Roger's Magic in route from Canada to the US and should get it in the next few days. I am excited to finally ditch this devil iPhone.
The #1 thing I use my phone for is web surfing, so I need the surfing experience to be top quality and better than what I already have. I have used a stock G1 and it is certainly not up-to-par. However, from the videos I have seen of the Magics and Heros with MultiTouch and Flash, that is obviously the way to go for me.
Q: Is there a non-Hero rom out that has both MultiTouch and Flash for the Roger's Magic?
I say non-Hero rom because I see that there are a variety of bugs with the Hero rom, including bluetooth headsets. If there are not any roms out then I will try whatever the latest/greatest Hero rom is.
Q: Is there any roms out since the release of the 2.0 Doughnut OS to developers a couple days ago?
I noticed that the release notes for 2.0 include multitouch, but I do not know about flash. If I can get Android + Multitouch + Flash and keep all functionality of the phone working, that will be perfect. I can probably live without Sense UI till they get the kinks worked out.
Sorry for the long post!
side note: if you order a rogers magic and you are on tmobile you will not get 3g, just edge... and if you are on at&t then you will get 3g.
Q1: no, atleast not yet because multitouch on g1 roms is all done thru the kernel, we have to wait will htc releases the kernel sources... which is soon(or never). or for someone to figure out how to compile the kernel.
Q1: don't think so.
You'll have to go with one of the Hero builds, the only "bug" for bluetooth is file transfer which isn't a bug it's to do with the kernel.
Doughnut is not 2.0, and it is not multitouch someone jumped the gun on that. The only multitouch we have as of right now is through the Sense UI builds.
Clinton
Excuse me for being stupid but I can't, for the love of God, figure out how the multitouch works on the Hero ROMs. I have the JACHeroski ROM on a 32A Magic.
I am used with the multitouch on the iPhone where you zoom in and zoom out with 2 fingers. Is this supposed to work the same? I tried it in the Browser and Google maps and nothing happened.

I can certainly live with no file transfer, since I don't use that anyways. I was going by the information on the wiki to determine that Bluetooth headsets didn't work. I guess that the wiki is quickly outdated.
How does one sort through these threads to find one that is the best working Hero - Rogers - Magic rom? It seems like there may be several available.
Thanks again!
Which Hero rom supports BT headsets? Finality 1.4 does not and that is my current rom.

Singapore HTC Magic:Which rom works for u

Which one is the best rom to try?
currently on cyan 4.01 but without quickoffice and htc sync..
anyone else here from singapore using the magic?
If you need HTC Sync, then you'll need to use Roms meant for HTC Magic or Hero, not the Google Ion ones.
If you dun want to try Hero Roms, you can try using the HOFO community Rom (the HTC one, not the Ion one). I've used it before and everything works except that you'll need to install the PC sync app for your phone which can be found here

If I remember it correctly JACxHERO does.
All Hero roms come with multi touch if I'm not wrong, but nearly all Hero roms also do not have fully functional BT.
If BT is not important for you, then Hero roms are nice to play with.
ok... shall stick on to 4.01 cyan for now..

Hero ROM is nice, very very nice especially with the TouchFlo.
I tried : Fatal1ty-Hero-Full-v1-4, but there are some bugs that I cannot tolerate and also the batt drains very fast.
So changed back to hofo v1.1.1
Original Magic rooted ROM can get TouchFlo too?
