I have just setup a wireless network in my home. Compared to bluetooth it is absolutley brilliant, I have fast internet on my laptop downstairs, wifi card in ipaq working great and it was a doddle to install, whereas bluetooth presents nightmares to configure, wont work with lots of devices, is short range and very slow. For anybody who is in 2 minds I would suggest wireless is the best by far in all ways.
Hi,
Apologies if I misunderstood you, but I think you missed the point of Bluetooth/WiFi. They really are completely different technologies.
Bluetooth is designed to be short range and lower power and to be able to communicate a multitude of devices wirelessly (i.e. keyboards, mice, GPS, headsets as well as forming mini networks). It's also not really designed to be "high speed" as in the same sort of levels of WiFi.
WiFi on the other hand is ONLY for networking and compared to Bluetooth it IS much faster as you've realised and it is designed for bigger distances, but the power drain is also considerably more as well.
That's why your device has both technologies, so that you can choose which method suits you best. Personally I use the WiFi for networking, but the Bluetooth for talking to my GPS and Handsfree. I've ran a Bluetooth network before and found them quite stable (driver/firmware versions will assist here) and they're okay in an emergency, but they're really not that speedy at all.
So wifi is limited in its capabilities? So no chance of wireless gps or wireless headsets for phones?
I wouldn't say it's limited. Wireless Fidelity is wireless networking. That's what it was designed for and that's what it does.
You do get network webcams as well as network printers etc which could directly or indirectly take advantage of WiFi, but that's about as diverse as I think it goes and even then it's not really WiFi doing the work. The devices themselves have built in network cards.
Technically you could have a headset with a built in network card/wireless tranceiver, but I think since they can already do that with Bluetooth in very small sizes/low power/low cost... I can't see a WiFi implementation happening anytime soon, if ever. More likely it'll skip WiFi and that sort of thing will go in whatever wireless technology comes out next.
But aside from possibly a headset with longer range and faster networking, what else would you want to use with a range more than 10m or needs faster speeds?
I suspect mobile phones will start including 100m Bluetooth when they work out how to get the power down, but I don't believe that'll increase the speeds. But hey I didn't write/design the spec, so who knows?
I was also quite surprised and pleased by the simplicity of setting the wireless network, on the desktop I took about 1 minute, no added software, just a couple of clicks and a reboot, on the laptop I installed the software, plugged in the card and it immediately found the network and asked me politely if I would like to use it, brilliant implementation of a superb system. I also saw an advert for a long distance network connection, 3 miles I think, that would be a cheap way of all your family using a single high speed broadband connection in the same town.
The answer is simple:
Can you use high speed WIFI for more than 3 hours with any PPC with standard battery? BT does that well.
You should compensate the high speed of connection and simplicity in configuration (not very sure about this) to the longer usage time.
Hi all,
I recently bought my HTC Polaris. It's the first wireless device I have, so I also bought a WiFi router to test it. I do not have any previous experience with WiFi on WinMobile, so the problems I am having could just be due to my newbie-ness...
I initially set my WLan router to WPA-PSK. I was able to get my Polaris connected, but at random times and repeatedly the device would stop receiving data (using IE, Google Maps...) with no apparent reasons. The wlan was still shown as connected in . At other times, it was unbearably slow. Sometimes it was difficult to reconnect after that.
Now I set my router to unprotected WLan, just for the sake of test. The connection with my Polaris seems more stable. I will keep testing.
In both situations there is something that puzzles me. In Settings-Connections-Wireless Lan, Main tab, it shows:
Tx speed = 54 Mbps
Rx speed = 1 Mbps
Also in the Advanced tab, the status is always shown as "Associated to the network" ("Associato alla rete"). I never saw "Connected to the network" ("Connesso alla rete") here.
Is this right? Did anyone else experience problems with the Polaris WLan? Is it possible that it works ok with no encryption, and doesn't with WPA? Please help!
*update*: while I was typing I was looking closely at the Rx speed. It seems to jump anywhere from 1 to 54 Mbps (but mostly stays at 1). I did not move the Polaris during this test. The signal strenght is good. The WLan adapter of my PC (where I'm typing looking at my Polaris screen) shows it as "excellent" and the connection pc-router is absolutely fast and stable.
I have no clue of what it can be.

WLAN Problems
This may not be related but I am managing to use a Netgear Router with WEP, however I do experience a lot of drop outs but more importantly I can't get any connections with the phone unless the battery saver setting is set for max performance. The phone also gets quite warm after 15 minutes operation on this setting.

as enterpryse has suggested you could go to settings>connections> wireless Lan> Power mode and move the cursor to best performance.
let me know if anything changes.

I'd say this is the best bet too.
But if you still having trouble try to reconfig your router allowing basically anyone regardless of topology to connect with it. And try using your pc simultaneously to see if it’s the router.
It could also be certain pages that you browse or maybe you router is updating too frequently I had that problem the other day because but kept updating my router for me.
And how long does you device take before it get quite hot? would i be out of line if i said maybe its because you're insulating the device with your hand? (I know the device needs to be held lol but that might be the only answer to your problem unless it’s an excessive heat problem then I would consider contacting HTC / the battery manufacturer / processor manufacturer)
Well, I'll be...
I kept trying to duplicate the problem. I set my WiFi router back to WPA as it was before when I was getting problems. Same PSK.
But after the first bad experiences (and my previous post), no more problems. The Rx speed is usually 42 to 48 Mbps now. It looks like this was the indicator that something was wrong in my first attempts, when I always got Rx=1. At 42 or more, everyting goes fast: Opera, Fast GPS, Google Maps... And I did not experience any more connection drops, data flow hangs, or slowness in connecting to the WLan.
The WLan router was already working fine, since I was already connected to it with my pc. I cannot explain why it didn't almost work and it's working fine now. The only thing I changed was the WLan channel. Could this be an explanation?

Of course, are there any other wlans around you? If they are on the same channel your router goes down with the speed till a stable connection is established.
Even if you have other wireless device e.x mouse, headset, keyboard. They often transmit on the 2,4GHz band an interfere with wlans.
Can't even load wireless mode!
I've just received my Touch Cruise and have started setting things up. I'm a previous owner of the Hermes so I know my way around the device. Or so I thought...
Using Comm Manager to start up wireless lan, when I click on the button, it thinks for a while but doesn't load up WLAN. The button stays in the "off" setting. Tried pressing a few times, no luck.
Tried switching off all other connection types and just switching on WLAN - still doesn't work. Tried using the hotlink via "Wireless LAN" icon through settings/connections to turn WLAN on. Still no luck. Resetting makes no difference.
Phone is otherwise working brilliantly. Looks like a driver issue, as I had a similar problem from time to time on the Hermes with Black ROM. Any ideas on what else I could try?

"Resetting makes no difference."
Did u do a soft or hard reset?
@Jackster - both soft and hard reset tried. No difference. But after the hard reset I re-installed Goodlink which threw up an error message "Communication port WIFI is locked down". Which suggests to me that WLAN is visible but access has been restricted somehow.
The question is why (??) and how to undo it...
Nothing a cooked firmware can't fix
Meantime, if anyone knows registry settings I should check to do some basic diagnostics, I'd appreciate it.

I got the same problem. I changed the connection settings of ActiveSync to
allow wireless connections when connected to a desktop computer.
Maybe this will fix your problem.

Good but where did you find this option on ActiveSync ? I just see an option whith BT not Wifi ?

Same problem here. Tx = 54mbit Rx = 1 mbit. Sometimes it works ok (with Rx 24-54mbit) but most of time there are huge drops so i cant use wlan at all.
My Nokia N95 works excellent at the same settings with same router.
My polaris wlan battery is set to "Max Performance".
Any clue?
weird
This is the second XDA Orbit 2 (Polaris) I've had in a week. I returned the first one because of WLAN problems. Exactly the same with this one.
I have a Netgear DG834GT, WPA-PSK encryption set to 'auto 108mbps' on channel 6. As other posters here, tried no encryption, changing channels, g only, g & b, as well as all the other suggestions on here. All I got was Rx=1, screen icon showing connected and no web access etc.
Then I noticed that my Orbit 2 mac address appeared on the Wireless Station Access list in my router wireless settings. I clicked on the Add button to add my XDA to the Trusted Wireless Station list (but Access Control was NOT switched on) and EUREKA, it started working, but not very reliably. Surely this shouldn't be necessary. I have had an XDA Orbit for a year with absolutely no problems, so I know my around the new one. There must be a problem with the Orbit 2 - surely we can't all be wrong?
Hey guys, I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere. Basically, I'm having an issue with data transfer rates over both Wifi and EVDO. The maximum transfer rate I seem to be able to pull out of my Touch Pro is ~65 KB/s over BOTH my home Wifi connection (which gives me speeds of up to ~600 KB/s through convention CPU use) and EVDO (my "theoretical bandwidth is much higher than ~500kbps or 50-65 KB/s I am getting).
The questions are :
1) Is this the type of speed I should be expecting with a mobile device?
2) If so, is it due to the file system speed/cpu speed/etc?
3) If NOT, are there tweaks (akin to, for example, increasing the receive window/MTU on a PC) that will increase my speed?
Although I do transfer files over my home network, and achieving the ability to transfer at 54mbps would be nice, I am more concerned with my internet file transfer speeds!
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
bumped...because i know someone out there must know the answers
I just want to add my voice to this comment in case it's related. I can't speak for EVDO but I seem to have odd rate limiting issues over WLAN.
Streaming video over WLAN I average about 700kbps except for the occasional burst to 4500kbps while buffering (using TCPMP).
Watching youtube videos I get a pretty steady 100kbps (way better than the 64kbps limit I get while active synced).
Using NATF 2.3 ROM with fixed video drivers.
Surprised there isn't more input here. I have the same issues in that I basically get faster connectivity from 3G than wifi..why is that?
Wifi performance is so bad I can barely watch my slingbox over wifi or even complete a VoIP call without significant breakup due to lost packets.
I have noticed this same issue with my previous HTC Thunderbolt as well. For a while now, whenever I use the mobile hotspot or usb tethering on my PC, I can only browse the internet (ie. Firefox) for a few minutes and then all browsing will state that there is no internet connection available. However if I run a torrent, it will run and full speed at that. Is Verizon only blocking me from certain ports on the internet?
I have incurred very high data usage with the Thunderbolt and now Charge which may be causing this issue. However, I find it very strange they'd block web browsing but not torrenting, where the latter which would typically suck much more bandwidth, the last thing Verizon wants!)
Would anyone here be able to explain or if they've experienced this as well?
Hi, I used to tether all time without any issues on previous devices, but for some reason it's unusable on my N5. I did quite a bit of troubleshooting and can't figure out why wifi tethering is extremely slow.
My setup:
Nexus 5 running Lollipop 5.1, build LMY471
Macbook Air circa 2011, OSX Yosemite
ATT, LTE provisioned (have gotten 20-30Mbps speeds from the phone direct via speedtest.net)
APN set to IPV4 settings for regular/roaming - didn't change the default settings.
Not interested in rooting now (or using PDANet)
Here's my troubleshooting so far:
The phone gets direct speeds of 4-10Mbps from speedtest.net's app, which isn't fast but is fine when I need to tether.
I can replicate those speeds with USB tethering.
Bluetooth tethering and Mifi tethering result in speeds of 0.1Mbps, so slow that it can barely load speedtest.net.
I've also tested this with Bluetooth off on both my phone and my Mac, same results.
I've tried this from multiple locations with the same result, 0.1Mbps speeds.
I don't think it's a wifi interference issue since Wifi Explorer on my Mac shows that my signal is at 80% compared to 40% for other signals.
Also, if it were interference based then I would see more variable speeds instead of 0.1-0.2Mbps consistently.
Any suggestions for further troubleshooting?
Thanks!
