Hi there.
I know there's probably nothing irritates you guys more than a n00b asking for assistance in doing something techie, but have pity...
I'm not a total tech divvy, I have no problem with pooters, but I've never had the reason to dissect code, or get up with the workings of the PDA or mobile phone, so I'm really clueless, here.
I have some general wonderments...
as well as requests for advice and assistance.
I have an O2 XDA Exec which I love, and haven't got the money to upgrade at present, and so, would like to milk as much performance out of it as possible.
I work in a business where contacts, bookings and diary dates are essential, as is communication via SMS and telephone (and one day, if it becomes cheap enough, push email would be nice). This device is running 24/7, keeping me informed, running my business, and its wonderful, such a problem when it 'goes down.' It has been running nearly flawlessly for almost 18 months, and much as I'd love to upgrade to a TyTn 2 when my contract expires, I also want to leave options open for a 3G and application-friendly iPhone, or indeed something better from HTC.
I have a few niggles to address.
First, the alarms, of which there are many required, are completely fubar unless I have AlarmToday installed. Fair enough. I understand that this is a 'Windows Mobile' issue, and I can live with using a small app to fix the problem. Are there any better solutions. I also have two 'tweaks' type apps installed, which claim to fix the issues that cause non-sounding alarms on WM PDA phones.
Second, I need a good one-glance Today screen, professional looking, and a comprehensive listing of diary dates and (possibly) text messages etc. But all the ones I seem to use appear to slow my XDA to a crawl.
Third, I need to use a good PIM, and chose Pocket Informant 2007, which is a great app, but now I'm struggling because my XDA seems to be grinding to a halt.
I noticed that when the battery hits about 57% it starts to crap out, freeze up, stop running apps etc. I replaced the battery with a brand new one, and it still does it. Also, the system is sometimes so slow, or the phone rings and the side buttons (pickup and hang up) don't do a damn thing...
A friend recommended that many bugs and issues of speed were resolved in WM6, so, of course, I'm looking for a good WM6 build to replace my standard (latest) ROM and OS from O2 on the XDA exec... essentially I only need the base featureset that came as standard, as long as my apps will still work. I have standard memory in the exec and 512 meg SD card.
Can someone please be bold and recommend the virtues of two or three WM6 builds for utmost reliability and functionality bearing in mind what I've said about the use and needs of the phone, and perhaps lead me to the right place, and the right procedures. I'm thinking that if a PDA phone is anything like a pooter, it might need a backup to hard disk, then a good clear out and a reinstall to try to break the backlog of clogging or something, and any tips on doing this/better apps/faster today screens would be really, really appreciated... I need input on this, because the last thing I can afford to do is brick the XDA or kick its usefulness into touch for significant periods.
I appreciate someone's help!
Many thanks,
Steve

Hi, and thanks for that, but I had seen that page before, and though I'm sure it sounds completely n00b to you, all I see are some names, which mean nothing to me, and some numbers, which mean nothing to me, and some hints toward notes explaining what I do with pieces of software that I don't know anything about and don't understand.
I appreciate that you guys are techie enough to write this stuff, but surely the purpose of you writing it is to provide it as a solution for people who aren't techie enough to write it, otherwise Microsoft win out over independent developers by making a product that is user friendly and self explanatory, rather than impossibly intricate and mysterious...
Still holding out for a more explanatory response, if someone would be so kind.

Just download one of the roms, put your device into bootloader mode (backlight button + Power button + soft reset), and run the upgrade exe file from your comp. Simple!
Thats all you need to know for flashing your uni. When you're in bootloader mode, check the version number in the bottom. If its 1.xx you have a G3 based uni, else its a G4 uni (ver 2.xx). Some roms are compatible only with G3 based devices....so check what you're about to flash.
I'd recommend Ranju's latest rom (v6) as it is really stable and has all the right applications and configuration in it.
All the best to ya!
San
OK, thanks. Will give that a try.
Hey guys,
I got a mytouch yesterday and LOVE it...but I already have the itch to mod it.
I came over from a HTC Herald (well a T-Mobile Wing), so I have some experience in this kind of thing....but it seems "rooting" android is a bit (a lot) more technical and difficult. By the end flashing the Wing was a 5 minute job...now I'm reading this forum and have no idea where to start.
So..........some questions, if you don't mind.
1- What is the advantage of rooting the phone? Obviously it allows you to access system files and stuff...but what's out there right now? How are these ROMs different than the stock stuff? I've heard a bit about multitouch...is that true? What else?
2- If I do root the phone, I assume it clears everything off (including my apps I downloaded)? Is there an easy way to back this thing up? And after the process is complete, is there an easy way to redownload all of the apps, or will I have to write them down somewhere to get again?
3- Whenever donut comes out....what happens then? Are the roms usually updated with the new stuff, or might there be issues? Or are the roms so far ahead that donut will be meaningless?
I think I had another question but I'm forgetting it now...anyway, this is a start.
And I apologize in advance for whatever info is already out on these topics. I read much of this forum, and it's tough, because there are so many posts regarding this stuff, it's difficult to sort out the good information.

1 there are many benefits that the average user typically wouldn't need... but, the best off the top of my head are of course installing cooked ROMs, having the ability to make system changes as you see fit, access to tethering applications, access to apk's that allow things like multitouch an array of programs built into your phone... the list really does go on... each ROM has its own elements; some are faster, some include multitouch in a lot of programs, some are based on the GUI known as Rosie developed by HTC (which is probably by far the most wanted implementation by newbie root users), the ROMs differ with each chef, so theres really no nailing it on the head
2 typically, any of the recovery images that are loaded onto your ROM when you're going through the root process will allow you to reload a nandroid backup... search up on nandroid and this will give you all the answers you need to know about system and program backup
3 roms being updated just really depends on the community and the chef of that ROM... when parts of donut were released, most of the chefs on this site started to implement them immediatley into their ROM's for the public... if you want true support from your chef of your specific ROM, then donate, simple as that... its their time they're putting in, so give them compensation as you see fit
Thanks for the response. Donating is definitely key, these guys deserve to be compensated for what they do, even if it is just for hobby. That goes without question.
Do the ROMs speed the phone up or smooth anything out at all? Not that I've had much issue with that, but coming from a wing I'm a bit paranoid about that.
PS....the fact that programs don't "Close" when you exit them is odd. I got a task killer but it's still crazy that I have to go into that to close everything. Probably my only complaint with android so far.
I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example
furthermore - wrong section

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

anyway, i am not here to argue... i just feel that the original question belonged in the QnA section

I guess you found this forum by searching on net. So you could use same method on the forums too. Just a simple search would give you excellent results.

Don't take it personally.
Was recommended this forum from a friend off BBS air guns he said it was a great forum where the people are very helpful and this is the place to fined all I need for my phone.
I have had a look through but it all seems gobblygook to me I just know I will end up doing something to my phone of shouldn't
Get registered at freeware pocket pc then download oMarket on your phone. It is a free app marketplace similar to WM marketplace. Also, go to hd2apps blog. Tons of apps and games (all free), best site imo. If you like to know people's recommended apps, go to TMobile HD2 forum, there are several threads there dedicated for that, just do a search. That is where newbies should go first before dabbling into XDA as in my opinion this forum is more for relatively advanced users...for tweaking and customization, a little less on apps and games.
Cheers for that
Welcome to the HD2 world here on XDA.
I totally understand how everything can be/is confusing at first. Having the phone for a day or so and not knowing what is out there to do even a general search. Reading the posts here will give you a general knowledge of the cab files that will enhance and customize your new phone to your liking. It really isnt that hard once you start playing around a bit.
Might I suggest bookmarking this forum, and keeping an eye on it. Lots of stuff here to do to your phone. Also read though all the posts in the "post your leo today screens" thread. tons of stuff there, and everyone shares what they have.
Please do remember the search feature is your friend. New threads with the same old questions that have been posted and answered 50 times will most likely only get you a few pointed responses.
Hope you enjoy your new HD2 phone and your time here.

Bet he's got some really silly username trying to make himself sound like some crack shot hero too hasn't he? Sad. Very sad.
Don't worry mate, they're not all that unfriendly on here, as the other two posters have proved.
This place can be a bit daunting, just read lots for a few days and it'll start becoming clear, drop me an email or PM on here if you get stuck.

Hey livebaituk,
Have you formatted the card before using it? Try that first....
Otherwise, did you buy it from eBay?? I had the same problem with the one I got from there, did a quick test on it and it turned out to be fake!
Use the program below to test the memory card and see if that's the problem....
(you will need to have a microSD convertor to use direct with your computer, either to usb or to SD if you have a SD card reader).
That's all I can think of, hope that helps,
Hey everyone!! Well I am new to the forums and the HTC HD2 and smartphones for that matter. I am not knew to computers, but I'm kinda afraid to fool around too much with it blindly cause I don't want to break my brand new phone. Things I would specifically like info on would be the following.
1. Flash Support - Basically I like to watch a lot of streaming content online, and the Opera browser isn't loading my videos. So lately I've just been downloading them and watching them on the player. I would like to watch them straight from the site so I can have access to them without pre-loading them everyday. I only watch them off one site if you need specifics, and I'll provide my site later since I'm not aloud to as a new user. I know about Skyfire Browser, but for some reason the browser doesn't go into landscape mode.
2. WiFi Hotspot applications - Are there any free apps that allow me turn the phone into a hot spot? If so what would you recommend?
3. Is there a way to customize the boot screen when you power your phone on and off? I'm not digging the T-Mobile pink stuff.
Other then those three I'll slowly found out thing I would want to improve my experience with my phone. Right now those are my major ones. The flash one especially. Well hope to receive some feedback and thank you.
