host file location - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Long time lurker here. I've been following this forum for some time and was wondering if anyone has found and successfully edited the host file so that ads no longer load, thereby saving much bandwidth and getting snappier-loading web pages. It's been done on the Palm Pre and iPhone, and I've tried to find the host file on the Hero, but no luck yet.

I believe there is an app somewhere on the marketplace that does this for you. But either way, Android is a linux system like any other (albeit highly stupified by Google) so the hosts file is /system/etc/hosts.

Ah yes, I did find another thread in the (G1) Dream forum with steps on how to do this. Thanks for the reply.

Ad-less browsing.
All you have to do is put it in the /system/etc/ folder.

I realize that this is a totally nub question but I can't seem to figure it out. How do I copy this host file from my Windows computer to the /system/etc/ folder on the Hero? It'd be awesome to be able to browse the phone's filesystem from Windows but, alas, no such luck.

What happened to the Apache uploads folder? I no longer see it on the FTP site.
someone out there trashed our uploads folder....everything down to hermes was deleted by someone... we dont know who, but we are all PI$$ED
I have quite a few of the apache if it needs uploaded.. no hermes though : (
If you want to upload any apache stuff that isnt in the regular folder then go for it.. but after you do contact me and i will move them to the regular folder so no one comes in and deletes the stuff.
how do you log in with permissions to upload?

Thanks. I think I uploaded most of the original contents of Apache.
I still don't see an Apache folder.
Am I missing something?

How weird, somebody did the same thing to the PPCGeeks FTP site. Had to go anonymous, and remove all delete permissions because of it. Almost wiped out the whole entire thing.

PDF & DOC attachments

Did a search, so sorry if I missed it. But, a couple of questions.
1) If you have root, is it possible to download and save PDF and Word files that come in on POP3 (or even gmail) email?
2) Otherwise, does anyone know the phone folder where these files are temporarily store while on the phone, and can they be accessed that way?
I spend a lot of time overseas, and going back and forth to the web to retrieve is a pain and expensive. Thanks
Forget it, I solved the issue.

I'd be really interested in how you managed this, I've searched here, and Googled everywhere (almost). But I still haven't found what I'm looking for...

lol...gotta love these types of posts right?
I'm able to save attachments like this using k-9 mail., for those interested
Sorry to go AWOL -- had to leave the country for a bit. My apologies.
Yeah, I also "solved" it by using K9. But, I find the program very buggie.
On a larger, related question, how does the Android platform make its file associations? In other words, when I receive an email attachment (with the stock app), it will allow me to download and save that attachment to my SD card only if there is an onboard, associated program. I can download .jpg, because Android has an application built in that will read a jpg. So, if I want to download a .doc file, I can't unless there is an appropriate app onboard. (Although k9 seems to have found a way). Where, in the Android platform, is this association made? And, is it possible (with a rooted phone) to somehow manipulate those associations to allow downloading of ANY (or a chosen few) files?
For instance, I find that if I change the file extension on a Word doc (for example) from "doc" to "jpg", my onboard email will allow me to download and save to SD card. So, it obviously CAN do it, what's stopping it?
Again, sorry for "skipping out" in the midst of a thread.
Download Crutch Lite in the market allows you to download any file by making Android believe it can open any filetype.
Theres a app called download crutch on the market that allows downloading of files that may not have associated applications. Not exactly sure what file types it supports but its worth a shot.
EDIT: Fushichou got it before me but heres a link to Cyrket http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=download+crutch
Thanks, but my experience is that Crutch will not work on email attachments. It seems to be an internet based device. I used it for a while. Partially, this is a kind of tech question -- how are the files associated?

Is there a Remote Desktop applicaion that can copy from PC and save to device?

I have tested team viewer and phone2PC with no luck.
I used to run RemoteTouch on my old Touch HD. Just got a Desire HD and miss the ability to be a thousand miles away from home, realising I haven't got the song I wanted to listen to and copy and pasting it to my SD card.
I've also had a look at RemoteVNC and Xtralogic but they log the computer out on connection.
Is there anything out there?
Here's a link to RemoteTouch, highly recommended for Winmo users
http://t2remotetouch.blogspot.com/
Think Remote Desktop by xtralogic allows save to sdcard. RemoteVNC Pro might do it too.
Almost
Thanks for the reply, they look pretty cool. Only thing that is getting me is that they log the user out so to get any files I would have to interrupt the session. It's a bit of a pain if my girlfriend then needs the computer and I have to give out my password.
Sorry, I should have specified in the first post. Will edit now

Looking for a remote desktop app with the ability to transfer files that doesn't logout users. Have a look at T2 Remote touch, that app was awesome and exactly what I'm looking for

One option is to use ES file explorer. It's the best explorer I have found and it supports local access, Bluetooth access, LAN access and finally ftp access. I have tested all these features except ftp. As I understand it though you could create a ftp server on your desktop to share your files over the web and use this app as a client. Another advantage of creating a ftp server is you can access your files through any internet browser.
I'm still struggling with creating the ftp server at the moment. It seems you need a bit of knowledge in web hosting and networking. If anyone can help I would be grateful.
I am using LAN feature atm. I just browse my PC files through the app and copy and paste anything to local SD card. Highly recommended.
Hope this helps.
MyPhonexplorer does the job well although at times it does not work at all for me. Try it. It slows transfer via by or wifi
Sent from my SAMSUNG-GT-I9000 using XDA App
You could also use LogMeIn or Teamviewer to browse through your files, and copy them to the dropbox folder. Then access them from the mobile. Pretty messy but it works.
Just a tip for easy FTP server setup: FileZilla FTP Server - runs great on WinXP-7 and is easy to setup/use. ES File Explorer works great for ftp access (in my experience).
You should definitely check Browsix (a new app I just released). It has a file manager (+ media viewer) which you can access by pointing your computer browser to www .browsix. com.
The site redirects you to your phone, and that's where the fun starts...
Let me know if you like this app or not.
Thanks,
Stijn

Can you post a video in your thread? I'm very interested in this app but paranoid about clicking unfamiliar links, especially on my work computer. It's only because you only have one or two posts, no offense intended.
Guys, I added some more explanation about Browsix in the other thread. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9714021&postcount=6

[Q] Application to copy from PC and paste to phone

is there any app for copy-paste from PC to phone and vice versa?
for example, I found some interesting article in my PC, and I want to copy some part of it to my phone.. I could've send the file via bluetooth, email, or USB connection.. but I think it'd be very neat to just copy the text (not the file) from your PC and paste it on your phone..
or in the opposite direction, I received an interesting SMS from my phone and I want to copy it to my PC..
is there any app like that?
I know that the app Chrome to Phone together with a plugin in either Chrome or Firefox on the computer does exactly that! However I don't know if there's in the opposit direction.

Hmm then it's strange that you don't find it. It's my first entry when searching on Chrome to Phone.

Download ES file explorer. You can add your computer as a lan drive (over WiFi) then any folders that are shared can be viewed on your phone. you can copy any file over. i have apks on my computer. If i view them with ES file explorer it coppies them to my phone then installs them. i also transfer music over this way. It might even work the other way if you change the folder permissions on the computer

Dropbox.
Just install it on your pc, sign up for an account (it's free but you can pay for upgrades to storage size) and install the app on your phone. Tada! Any file you put into your Dropbox folder is downloadable via the Dropbox app. It works both ways!
Edit: Oops just read your entire question. Hm well I guess you can use dropbox but then for your purposes you'd have to copy paste said text to a note app and then upload the note file to dropbox..Can't think of a more direct way.
Maybe you can find an app that has Google Docs integration. Either way you need an internet connection.

I have a text file and folders that I just edit on my pc and I have it directly here on my iPhone, bb and android phone. It's the best app I've ever used. How to create a shortcut on Android to a Windows folder, not using ESFileExplorer

Hi - it is easy to create a shortcut on my Android 6.0.1 desktop to a Windows 10 folder using ES File Explorer. The trouble is I find ES File Explorer really irritating these days and want to uninstall it. Is there any other way to create a shortcut on the Android desktop? I have tried one or two file managers such as Solid Explorer, File Commander, but can't see a way to do it...
Did you try like that ?

It has waaaaaay to much going on for it now. With the " junk cleaners" and "charge boosters" and all that. As android enthusiasts, we find that insulting. Because we know it doesn't work/makes much of a difference.
ES was based on relevance and simplicity once. Now its just as toxic as an app developed by Cheetah Mobile.

Yeah, I avoid those extra useless features and still use ES without ever encountering them.
All they did was incorporate a couple of the other ES apps into ES File Explorer instead of having them as separate apps, e.g. ES Task Manager and such.
They have quite a way to go before they're as bad as Cheetah Mobile.
