How to create a shortcut on Android to a Windows folder, not using ESFileExplorer - General Questions and Answers

Hi - it is easy to create a shortcut on my Android 6.0.1 desktop to a Windows 10 folder using ES File Explorer. The trouble is I find ES File Explorer really irritating these days and want to uninstall it. Is there any other way to create a shortcut on the Android desktop? I have tried one or two file managers such as Solid Explorer, File Commander, but can't see a way to do it...

Did you try like that ?

Yes - the problem is getting a shortcut to a folder on my Windows PC via the LAN. I can only see how to do it using ES File Explorer

I can upload the last "decent" and bloat free version of ES if you like. Plus I changed the signature so you won't be prompted to update it in the Playstore

I have used ES File Explorer for years, I don't see what all the fuss is about with ES File Explorer these days. It's as easy to use as it ever was and I barely even notice "bloat". Why all the fuss?

It has waaaaaay to much going on for it now. With the " junk cleaners" and "charge boosters" and all that. As android enthusiasts, we find that insulting. Because we know it doesn't work/makes much of a difference.
ES was based on relevance and simplicity once. Now its just as toxic as an app developed by Cheetah Mobile.

Yeah, I avoid those extra useless features and still use ES without ever encountering them.
All they did was incorporate a couple of the other ES apps into ES File Explorer instead of having them as separate apps, e.g. ES Task Manager and such.
They have quite a way to go before they're as bad as Cheetah Mobile.

Well I try to disable them but they keep popping up all over the place. And the largest font is so small I can't see anything anyway! Using a Xperia Z3C...
Thanks very much for the older version ... the shortcut seems to work.
Strange that no other apps offer a homescreen shortcut to a windows folder since I guess at some point this old ES will cease to work..

Then maybe you can try the version I just uploaded. It has all the useful features minus the bloat.
Maybe they're not really as bad as Cheetah Mobile. But because they were held at a higher standard, they just seem like more of a disappointment.
I don't know what happened, my guess is that they sold the company. It sucks tho.

If it gets to where I'm aggravated by newer versions of ES File Explorer I'll revert to an older version, I'd rather not depend on a version that will at some point no longer work.

file managers - multiple selection to delete

as per the title, on the various file managers I've tried, I havn't been able to sus out how to select more than one jpg (for example) in a dir to del all at once.. is this an android or app function that isn't available or am I a noob and missing someing?
If you use astro file manager, you have an option on the toolbar called 'multi', you then select the files you want to delete, then the same toolbar will show different options, and here ul find the one called 'delete'!
Hope it helps!!

spot on thanks!!
If you don't want to deal with the ads in Astro, you can also use ES File Explorer. That too supports multi-select.
Or Just Install a patch that removes ADs from Astro FM.
Just google a little
Cheers

for all of androids goodness there are some glaring omissions from basic OS functionallity..
I'm sure there are reasons this kind of thing are not in the basic android interface, but as a simple end user they would be very useful.
Thanks for the other input on alternatives and hacks for ads.. --> strangly though I don't mind paying for apps or taking an ad supported one to support the devs.. unlike most software on my desktop :/ wierdness

App/file managment

I realize everyone has their opinion about software but I was wondering if there was a good app/file management tool in the market that everyone likes or most people like. Or are these two separate applications? I plan on rooting shortly and want to get rid of the bloatware and be able to manage my files. Thanks
I like Astro File Manager, works like a charm..........
Same Here. Pro version is awesome. Free version is good too...
Root Explorer, full r/w access to the entire system, text editor, and gives you access to the /data folder that other file managers don't.
I would have to say that I have also used astro file manager since I first got my nexus one over a year ago and it is one of the first applications I download when I get a new android device. I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm going to start the root now! Thanks for the info. hopfully all goes well.
I use Astro and Root Explorer as well, both premium. I will use the root explorer to "borrow" apps from my 6 other devices to swap around with eachother.

Sorry currently not. But this feature is scheduled on the next release to support. Normally we will deliver a new release to our users on every weekend.
Getting better and better.
I discover File Expert couple of months ago. By far my favorite. I don't even look for an alternative by now.
Great job guys.

Okay guys, I'm going to give a testimony.
I've used Astro, ES, Linda and then this. This is a COMPLETE package. I love how I can grab some files from my laptop wirelessly, have root access, and have a beautiful file manager all at once. This has been the best file manager I've ever used, and I highly recommend it.

Hi,
thank you for recommending FE! We think it's time to change, Astro and ES are good app but we think we can provide more useful and powerful alternative.
Amazing app, I switched a couple weeks ago. I put in feature requests on your forum, mainly for a refresh button for the toolbar.
Some other things that would be nice:
more archive support (7z for example)
And the 'download any file from the browser's feature astro has.
I use FE primarily, but because it lacks 7z support and the browser download feature I am forced to keep two other file managers handy.
Anyway this app is still superior to all other file managers, keep up the good work!
This is a really cool app. One request:
Option to show Toolbar only when at least one item is checked, or by pressing Menu while at least one item is checked.
Also, for some reason it takes a while (around 1 full second) for the Operation menu to show after I click on the button. Should it take this long?
I'm totally trying it!!!! As soon as I get home

No, it's not. I have tested the popup speed when touching the Oper button on various phones and tablets, all of them shows the menu immediately. I cannot feel any delay.

My phone and more information is in my signature. See below. I avoided the problem by putting the cut, copy, and delete functions as buttons in the toolbar instead.

[APP]SD File manager/Explorer

Hi All,
This is my first application in Android, SD File manager/Explorer. This helps you organize all the Files/Folders in your SDCard. Unlike other file managers in the market it is extremely light weight(just 170 KB) and very simple to use.
For the first release(has all the basic functionality like Copy, delete, rename, favorites list, rename etc..), I wanted to get feedback about the UI and performance and make it a lot better in the next releases. In the next update I'm going to bring advanced features like Google drive, dropbox integration, search, network access etc..
Please use it let me know any bugs and help me make it better. Also any features/Suggestions are extremely welcome.
Download the apk in the attachment or download it from play store
PS: This is my first applications and took at most care to make sure that it is bug free, but there are still any please spare it .
Thanks and regards,
Murali
This is pretty cool if you want to do quick actions like copy/paste. Definately faster than cm file manager too. I would like to suggest you look at a rather nice feature on SolidExplorer, you have 2 active panes and can copy from one to the other, just makes file management a breeze
thanks for reply

[APP] X-Plore File Manager - duel pane tree view. Worth checking out.

Love this file manager. Everyone should be using this. Only thing that seems to confuse people, if you wanna copy of move a file to a different location, the file has to be selected from one side, and the destination has to be selected on the other side, then you hit copy of move and it will send it to that location. I usually just keep internal on one side, external on the other, and you can pop things back and forth. Works the same for sending files to cloud storage. However dropsync is the app I most use for that, large files seem to transfer more easily than in file managers. Smaller files work just fine tho.

I've been using this app since the glory days of s60v3. all other file manager apps just look like a confusing mess to me compared to x-plore and I don't ever see the day coming when I'll drop it.
that said there does seem to be some kind of changes in google's file system that x-plore hasn't kept up with. moving and copying files on marshmallow roms made after roughly Jan/Feb 2016 has the exact same issues for me on 2 phones. one is an s4 i9505 running custom and the other is an m8 on HTC made google edition firmware. that stops me thinking it's rom related.
without me even describing the issue in any detail do others out there know what I'm talking about ?
does anyone with a real dev level of understanding know specifically what the cause is ? if so I'd like to share that info with the dev at LCG and to bring the app back to it's former and fully deserved glory...

I switched from ES to X-plore.
To be honest, ES is more user friendly. X-plore is more like Total Commander, dual-panel styled file manager, which is more geeky.
Features are about the same, but X-plore is better for zip/archive management. I love disk map too, much faster than storage analyzer in ES. Also, ES is a adware/bloatware now, always sending data to servers in China.

no that wasn't what I meant. specifically it's copying and moving files from anywhere to anywhere now results in a kind of hang for up to half an hour depending on the file size. you can leave the process to run in the background or even interrupt it and cancel it (most of the time it will be completed unless you marked more than one file). even if you've cancelled the move or copy and killed the app the notification will stay up for about half an hour before finally deciding it's completed with a toast to confirm it.
in the early days moving one file within the same memory was instant as the index was updated rather than moving anything. once this stopped being the case this weird error began it's journey.
I also use profimail from same author. Great apps
