Why is this website so slow - General Questions and Answers

As the title, its taking up to 2 minutes to open any thread, is it just me or what?
My phone arrives tomorrow

Mostly it's because people keep posting stuff in the wrong forum...

LOL i do understand that nudge, but i mean its getting slow to the point of unusable, i can make a cup of tea while i wait for a thread to load. Thats not right is it?

Its a super busy forum. Or are you on dial up..?

Load it with HD2, it will load faster.

LOL thats funny, no im on 14mb, have noticed a strange slowdown lately though.

it's very slow for me too lately

I have been here regularly for a few months now and it has always been slow for me. I load a page and go look at another while that one loads.

From NYC Need BIG HELP please.

Hello ladies and gentlemen my name is Ani, I am from New York. I recently got the Touch Pro for Sprint users with cdma and its a pretty good device except for a couple of things here and there. I found this site from howardforums.com they dont have anything over there about this phone. I Keep reading posts about rom's and tweaks that i can do to make my tp faster and more responsive but i must admit i am such a noob, i dont understand a damn thing. I am pretty good at PC's to some extent, i just dont want to mess my phone up. Now to the real problem, the tp has been good, but slow as you all know, everytime i do a soft reset my cpu % is low at 27-32, but the minute i do something it goes up lil by lil and never goes back down last time i had it at 48% before i did a soft reset and i know a soft reset is not the answer. The higher it goes of course the slower it gets. I need big help on how to make my tp faster, the touchflo faster, all the applications starting faster and of course keep my cpu % low. I am also into game, i basically need help with everything. I apologize if this is not the right place to write this thread. I appreciate anyone who tries to help me out. Thank you.
Had you read the stickies or the first 2 pages of this forum you wouldv'e found your answer. Instead you create a redundant thread with the same exact question as this thread on the second page! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462850
I cant wait till this forum get flooded with even more redundant threads after Christmas/New Years.
you are right to be honest. I have owned forums in the past and i hated that. I am reading here and there at threads for noobs. But honestly im just scared man i dont want to mess my phone up, and i want to get opinions for which rom and other appliances are best for my version.
As a general guidline we don't tolerate threads asking others to do the footwork for you.
Please read the links in my signature to understand the nature of XDA Devs.
Best recommendation I can give is to read the threads for Roms that will work with your device and try a few of them.

Just got my Att Fuze what are some good programs to DL?

whats some good programs to install?
Um well....... what do you want to do? Are you going to flash a new ROM? What are you using the phone for? These are the questions I have for you. Without knowing that we can't tell you what to look for.
sigh.. just go to the site in my sig, tailored just for you.
And before you post on xda again please read the rules and guidelines first.
Click my sig, i got hundreds of cabs.
I know the OP asked when he could have searched...
But i am in the same boat and was also wondering what everyone is using. His question (and the replies with apps in the sigs) is going to make my life better too
So thanks OP for asking a disliked but useful question....

for the 10^10000000000th time.
well, i look at it this way...it doesn't hurt anyone here if someone ASKS....there is no gun to your head to answer it. only chime in if you feel like it. The OP's title is very explanatory of what he was asking so no one should have opened the thread unless they either wanted to reply or were curious of the responses given (like me). To be fair, i have never quite understood the strictness imposed which seems to cause so much frustration in (many) forums.
Signal to noise ratio, man. The fewer redundant threads, the fewer months it takes someone to get the same knowledge and tools from xda forums for their phone.
I had no problem answering his question (hell I spent countless hours designing a website to accommodate people in his shoes) and I'm sorry if I came off as bitter but the rules make sense to the people who made the rules and to me and especially to those reading the forums on their phones with a browser or RSS.
Think of Slashdot. There by default you wouldn't see things like this as they would get moderated below the default threshold. If you're so inclined, you can modify the threshold up or down or order the posts in various directions. That makes Slashdot a lot better than it used to be before they coded that. But wouldn't it be nice if XDA could continue to get away without needing the forum equivalent of that kind of system if people would just post properly and when newcomers do not that they are advised to check the rules (and, in this case, their questions get answered too)?
And yes, because of this thread a bunch of people are getting cabs they didn't have from various sigs and now that this is turning into a debate a lot more people will get cabs. But would you not agree now that we are both right? Or do you truly not mind the boards being flooded with the same questions the wiki and searching satisfies? Not to mention spam and people trying to sell their phones. Signal to noise ratio.

I think for some it's just a matter of frustration. I've been guilty of it myself, and got my hand slapped by the mods in Q&A for an inappropriate flame. Speaking for myself, I first joined a little over a year ago and read everything available. This allowed me to avoid asking questions that had already been answered. I'd hazard to guess that the "ask first and search later" approach is viewed by some as intellectually lazy. I can also see the other side that you point out. This site can be very intimidating and some people may just not know what to look for -- especially if they're new to WinMo. I've now adopted a no-flame approach (don't want to get slapped again). I'm certainly no expert, but I occasionally can provide an answer or suggestion, even if it's nothing other than providing a link to the appropriate thread. I figure it's the least I can do for all the great help I've received here.

Can't help but say that in my head with the Dude's voice from The Big Lebowski.
Well put! I trolled this board months before I got my Fuze on release day. After I got it, I finally registered at xda. Just now I flashed my phone with a NAFT's new ROM. Countless threads of information to go through for someone with tendencies of ADD its hard to take it all in a fast as I want to. Many saved bookmarked threads. Think this might be my 4th post. I wanted to take the easy/short cut and ask but all the information is there. Just had to search and read & read & read again.
There are many talented, smart & helpful people on the forum. This forum totally kick ass in all reality.
BTW d0ugie, website kicks ass! Helped me out tremendously 6 weeks ago.
Now off to search for may att stock ring tones I didn't backup before the flash.

@D0ugie
First off, i didn't think your reply was too negative. You just pointed out that people should search first and ask later, which i agree with. I think in my mind it's the level of grey that exists with the "search first" motto that is debatable. I have spent a LOT of time in some instances searching for a needle in a haystack, sometimes in fear of knowing that if i pose a new thread for a quick answer i might get flamed for it. And there are times when i asked before i probably should have (had one of those the other day) and felt like an idiot for it. And then there are the times where i was looking for something but maybe didn't even know it, and had someone else ask it and be like, wow that is exactly what i wanted to know. And then there are still the times where i asked a Q and wasn't sure if it was a good question and whether or not i'd even get a reply, and had a huge discussion evolve because of it and lots of people glad i did ask.
Obviously, the repeat of the same question over and over can make it harder to find the BEST answers, but sometimes i will search and not find that right thread and then someone points me to it and i am like, that just saved me SO much unnecessary searching, THANK YOU.
The bottom line though is i love this community and, in general, everyone here is amazing and so helpful and giving. I feel lucky to be a part of it and wish i was a better developer and had more to contribute.

Funny i was looking for the Dude trying to get a little Time of from XDA and accidentally used the Google XDA search. This was the only result.
http://www.google.com/cse?cx=000825531964825142534%3Acqr2sjirilw&q=the+big+lebowski&sa=Search&cof=FORID%3A0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
I didn't know that until i accidentally searched for it.
Well for those in the Dark here's the Short Version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqtgfjkB6Pg
Please delete me when the fun's gotten out of it, but at least XDA should get back two search results from now on, on The Big Lebowksi
In two weeks:
http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&...esult&cd=1&q=Noonski+the+big+lebowski&spell=1
Should give you at least one result on finding out my true identity.
A few posts deleted, that is already more then any of us would have wanted on a Forum meant to harbour information.
Don't Flame a man trying to show you the light of XDA, it attracts to much attention of Moderators even when they are trying not to.
If you go to my 4shared, you can find pretty much any application that will do whatever you want on your WinMo based phone.

Problem With Screen Timeouts on CM 4.2.11.1

I am having a problem with the screen timing out, and going black. This seems to happen regardless of whatever I am doing on the phone (texting, browing internet, etc) The touch recognition does not keep the display on, and the phone will go black right in the middle of my typing. the only way to keep the display on is press the menu button. Any advice? Its a clean install, just installed yesterday

@Chris....Have you rebooted your phone since you flashed the 4.2.11.1 upgrade? This happens to me every time I flash a ROM update for Cyanogen, but it is resolved after the first reboot. I would give that a shot.
@Shadow....Yet again a great example of why people are ditching XDA and moving on to other forums for their dev needs. Funny how number of posts somehow adds you to this elitist group of complainers.
@XDA....Can we please change the membership ratings? My proposal is:
Junior Member -1-50 posts
Member - 51-100 posts
Senior Member/Verified *****/I rule the world so you better know that prior to posting anything - 101+ posts
Feel free to pick one out of the 3 for the last category.....but I am reallying hoping for the second choice...cause it pretty much describes how most of your "Senior Members" act.
....And before I get flamed/suspended.....remember I said "most", not all.
oh damn, i thought i was in that forum... my bad. but thanks bwinger for answering me. yes, that seems to have worked.
You should try wiping and use the base rom and try cyan's rom again.
In settings change timeout to 2min or something higher.

I have a better idea ppl under 500 posts should not be able to make thread at all.
And bwiner just stfu we r right and u r wrong this belongs to Q&A or CY's thread matter of fact cuz ppl r too lazy to read and reaserch half of time their questions dont even get answeared cuz ppl get fed up with crap like i must have reported 6 posts today that should've been in Q&A or other thread.

Honestly, I don't think shadowch31 was out of line whatsoever. It's not being elitist to chastise others for not following simple rules. The OP is a selfish ass, who seems to be under the impression that this forum is dedicated to him and his problems alone. Like I always say, if everyone who had an issue with a ROM posted a new thread, this forum would be absolutely un-navigable. The CyanogenMod has nearly 10,000 posts. Assuming only half of those are issue-related, that would be 5,000 more threads scattered about this forum.
Maybe people aren't ditching XDA because others are putting them in their place. Maybe people are ditching XDA because of all the morons flooding the site with garbage. This is a development forum, not a personalized troubleshooting team for each user.
To the OP, stick to AndroidCommunity or a similar site. If you keep up this crap, you're not going to be welcome here for very long.
ironically most of the garbage on here is from ppl who flame lower ranking members. who gave you the authority to disrespect or even abate other members? Bottomline we ought to have more respect in here for all members. we all started as juniors...but besides that you are a loser if you waste your time arguing with people you don't even know anyway.

Oohhh a feisty one I see, makes it more enjoyable extinguishing your little flame there.
If this had not been his very first post (proving yet again why people should be forced to read the rules and learn what a search button is and it's function) and had it been posted in the correct thead which is ALWAYS on the front page here I would have answered happily. Also might help if this wasn't about the fifth post alone today that has been reported for being in the wrong place I MAY have been nicer.
Now as it happens the OP has held his hands up and said he posted in the wrong place and apologized which is fair enough and hopefully it will be removed and put into the right place where it is going to get the proper attention.
Now we come to you and your oh so inflated ego and possible super hero complex 'coming to the rescue of the weak and feeble' oh please! What's up didn't daddy pay you enough attention growing up? See we can all be a-holes now can't we, just some of us do it with flair

I never argued whether or not this was posted in the incorrect section....it obviously was. That being said....look at how you responded to someone who simply posted in the incorrect section. Wouldnt it have been easier to just say it was in the wrong section and move it?
And whats with the daddy jokes (I think it was supposed to be a joke)?? How old are you? You are really showing your lack of maturity with your responses. And if you didnt notice.....the only peeps that support you in flaming my post are....thats right....you guessed it...Senior Members. Lets try to keep things in perspective here. I have no ego. We killed plenty of cats in the Q&A forums a few months back and had plenty of personal ?s and maybe even a couple fake roms
You might have stepped into a time loop to bout last sept's dream Q&A

Do you get annoyed by so many people asking the same set of questions?

When I first got my ns4g, I was into being active in this forum section. I would help out people with their questions or problems. Then I noticed things becoming monotonous very quickly. What I saw was many different people asking questions or having problems with stuff that had already been answered or solved in posts elsewhere many times over. I began being irritated by this and would sometimes lay into them or be very sarcastic. After that, I stopped posting anything because I got to the point where I wanted to yell at them for not looking around and the answer was right around the corner and I was tired of saying "look here (link)".
I know I can't be the only one like this. Anyone else care to share their frustrations about this?
Maybe I'm getting old or burnt out.
its apart of the deal of helping others out. think of it as if you're working at customer service, you'd encounter this problem on a daily basis. ive helped a lot of people on the NS forum and i know how you feel
I think the main issue is the poor search results.
Use the search tool and you have to either plow through tens of thousands of non-helpful results, or you post a question in a new thread.
Anyway, a thread like this which just going to be complaints is not very helpful either. You could have added your statement to the end of another thread about repetitive questions...Instead, you started a new thread.
What you probably need to do is step away from the forums and get some fresh air ;-)
This post wasn't intended to help, it was intended to vent frustration and confirm I wasn't the only one occasionally losing my mind.
Customer service...... I pondered that thought for a minute and remembered a story I read years ago. It was the one where the help center guy told the customer to pack up the computer and send it back because they were too stupid to use a computer.
Oh well, at least I just made myself laugh.
I know how you feel. When I first joined xda (in my evo days) I was very involved with helping others out, etc. The useless questions annoyed me, but what really got to me is when people would ask the same questions within a thread for a rom, kernel, or mod. I mean, many times the question and answer was literally on the previous page. That isn't xda's horrible search function (which isn't too bad to search w/in an individual thread, but is really bad for an entire forum), that's laziness.
So I just stepped away a bit. I mean, for God's sake, these ARE just cell phones...
And, while we're cluttering things up w/ a useless rant and rave thread, I'd like to add a couple other annoyances that have caused me to step away somewhat: rant/ asking a question like "Will this work on my phone?" or "How do I flash this?" and when someone asks a question that was answered in the OP. /endrant
Yes. The best way to search xda is Google. Type what u want or need and then type "xda" after it. Works everytime. No excuse

Still, a lot of those ROM threads are hundreds of pages long...everyone is supposed to read through hundreds of pages before posting?? For example, Myn's Warn twopoint two thread for the Evo has over 42,000 replies. That is 4247 pages! CyanogenMod 7 has over 10,000 replies.
Anyway, that is my last contribution to this thread. Good luck guys.
I understand that with there being cdma and gsm versions of this phone that it will add to the confusion. I've seen a lot of people flashing the wrong thing for their phone and almost killing it. I know I am forgetful but I don't remember seeing this much screwing up of a phone with the old phones and sections I used to hang out in.
I understand the frustration of the OP. But it is what it is. I just keep answering the sane questions over and over as nicely as I can.

Well, I guess, patience is what we need
This is what forum intended for. Helping them out as much as we can.
It's tiring to reply the same question over and over again,
but it's fun at the same time
Personally, I really like to help those people who are in trouble,
as I was one of the trouble guy before when I first got my Nexus S
Helping one another is great.
Suggestion: Why not you gather all the question you answer, and create a FAQ post,
this would help a lot in our forum (According to the post number you had, 8xx, you should be able to write a thousand Q&A I guess )
Just try to remember a few things.
What may appear to be a dumb question to you, to the person asking it may be very important.
There is really no such thing as a dumb question. Only dumb answers.
I find myself remembering those 2 things in life and think they serve good purpose. If the little things in life eat ya up you won't enjoy the good things life offers. Its not worth the energy. Just skip em and look for something important to read

not joking, and this isnt meant to jest at anyone.
yes ignorant and lazy people are blah, but sometimes you just can't quite find what your looking for, or its faster and time is of the essence to ask the question...there are alot of things, and alot of reason's, and alot of people that need answers.
I always feel that if you can't be bothered helping someone, don't, but when people go, oh jeez just search, don't answer, but are eager enough to spout off, or 10000x more worthless than the people asking the question even if they are lazy and ignorant.
because that person is lazy, ignorant, and a jerk.

This is a smartphone comunity, people come here to ask for help, it's the main reason this forum exists and this is a fact. New comers will always make a new thread instead of searching for their answer.
With no offense to anyone but if you can't stand that maybe this isn't the right place to spend your nights.

I should add that I've worked as a Customer facing service/sales rep for the last 10 years.
So I'm used to getting the same question over and over, and I honestly enjoy getting a question I know vs something I have to figure out haha.
Challenges can be fun sometimes.
But honestly by your theory no one should ever ask question's unless they are breaking completely new ground (which almost doesn't exist) because the info's already out there, so next time you ask a question, punch yourself in the face for us Mr.Knowitall because you could have just found the answer somewhere else.
or maybe you could just realize thats how we learn, and when we learn our knowledge gets spread, its one of the most important things in life, get over it.
Haven't you ever been going down the road and asked yourself, man, whats the speed limit here, even tho there was a sign that freaking told you just back there 100 feet..... next time instead of asking that question, or moving forward to find out, turn around instead and go read it, seems logical ay?
I've never understood why this bothers so many people. It's a website... it's the internet... they are phones. You guys really get upset? Sounds overly sensitive to me. Either answer the question or dont. It's quite simple. We are all here to help and learn. There isn't a place for rudeness when people are asking genuine questions. Well... at least there shouldn't be. Should people search? Sure.... but some dont. It's not that serious.

[Q] Pretty big design flaw with the wifi

Anyone else notice this? When you hold the phone in landscape, the wifi straight drops out? (Most notably when covering the power button end of the phone with the left hand.) Seems to me that having the antennae built into the back panel/battery cover was a wrong design choice.
Edit: And let me add that reception doesn't drop, just the wifi.
we both made a post about this at the same time. I'm having issues also. I didn't notice that it happens in landscape specifically. it happens all the time to me
Your post is a joke right? Or is this your very first time on the internet and you happened to randomly land on xda for your very first post ever; all the while managing to avoid the hundred of posts regarding the exact same thing?

It could be possible, chances are probably as good as getting struck my lightning, winning the lottery and seeing pigs fly all at the same time, but still entirely possible...
Didn't know this forum was full of wanna be mods. If you came him in here with the intention of just ****ting on me, then shame on you. If anything you could of just pointed me in the right direction, like a REAL mod would do, then let this topic die.

I'm am no such thing... I think perhaps you should first watch the Video titled:
'You are a NOOB on XDA-Developers'
before you post anything. This issue must have appeared 100s of times on this forum. It would be sensible to use the search feature in future to prevent the forum getting clogged up with the same old topics... I mean it is taking an age now to find anything which is new and worth reading on the sensation forums.
It is not my intention to cause harsh feelings towards other members. However, it's just sometimes easier to convey a point with a slight bit of sarcasm (a concept I know some folk find difficult to grasp) than doing what I am now and stating the obvious about the fact that you should search the forum before posting. IF your issue isn't already in the forum, or it is not particularly related, then you need to post a clear and decisive thread, detailing all of your issues. However I can assure you this has been posted many times in the past week or so and I'm getting sick and tired reading the same old thing!! I'm sorry if I upset you or dented your ego; you'll survive
I hope you continue to enjoy the forum, just as I intend to do myself
Thanks and again I'm sorry for portraying 'stick up my ' behaviour (perhaps a tad extreme response from yourself), just my way of communicating a message; which in future I'll bear in mind because I now know it can cause irrational responses from people, something which I personally do not aspire to cause.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
Regards,
Hayden
p.s.
I have no intention of being a Mod - to much hassle. I would like to note that many Mods on this forum would have given a similar response that I just have - USE THE SEARCH, it's there for a reason!!
Well said hayden. he is right noobs. I think you should have read the forum rules first laid out by the mods. Read other threads. If your issuer isn't there then post and we will be more than happy to help

Search wasn't working earlier. I looked through the first four pages with nothing similar to either of these posts on here.

Back on track... I have the same issue as the op (putting my palm over the top of the phone with my fingers on the back causes my wifi signal to decrease) I noticied it before reading this thread because the wifi calling notification would randomly show up while connected to wifi

Hmmm... this may call for a Recall by HTC... in return for Unlocked Bootloader Sensation Replacements.
Mine will be delivered tomorrow so I cannot do any testing right now but by any chance is there a way to change the power setting on wifi? If it is in power saver mode or something similar it could be more susceptible to interference.
Different phones but my HD2 had some weird quirks on Wifi till I forced it to full power on wifi.
Might not help but its something to look at perhaps.
No problems on wi-fi, so far so good, after unlock it will be perfect.

Yea, 10332007 you nailed it... I went to settings > wifi settings > Menu > Advanced and turned on "Best wifi performance" and then it would only drop one bar. (previously dropped 3). battery sucker, but it does decrease the severity of the issue, besides I'd expect some drop in signal with my meaty paws in the way.

No real criticism intended, but I would like to point out a slight flaw in your argument. I am not what I would consider a noob, and I am searching for the very same answer.
Had you actually been nice enough to help this person, you would also help others that are searching for this information too. We all have to wade through a ton of false leads when trying to hunt this type of info down. I find there is quite a bit to sort through sometimes, and it is people that are kind enough to answer these questions (noob or not) that also help so many others.
It seems that this is the spirit in which this community was built upon, I see so many angry and irritable people around this forum these days... it is such a shame.
In this situation, you would not only have helped a noob, but you would have saved time for all the other folks that are trying to locate this info and read the title of this post.
I think he gets it now, guys.
This was his first time posting, relax. Hopefully from now on he'll use the search feature, but for now the least you can do is just help the guy out AND advise him about the search feature. Let's not scare away a new forum member.
Wish I could help you, but I am only getting my Sensation next week.
I don't have this problem at all. Have tried and tried to replicate it, but can't. Glad I don't have this problem.
