My Google map GPS is telling my position within a precision of 1300 metres, lil bit useless,no.... Is there something to do?
It's using the cell towers to give your position. In the menu, select "use GPS" and give it a moment to pick up the satellite.
...Also, locate and run Quick GPS. It will download latest satellite locations for quicker lock on.
As a side note, you will discover the Google Traffic very good, at least in metro areas (NY for me).

Those 2 post are correct, but you also have to go the GPS settings in google maps, and click manual. Set the com to COM 4 and put the baud rate to 4800. That is the presice settings, and Google Maps sometimes requires you to tell it specifically what the settings are. Once those are set, click on "Use GPS" again because anytime you change the GPS settings in Google Maps, it disables the "Use GPS" option on it. Hope these 3 post help.

I didn't have to change GPS settings in Google Maps for it to work properly for me, and it finds me 'within 20 meters'. I'm using MightyROM 11/10/09.

Thats good. Like I said, its not always necessary but when it doesnt lock or you get a large radius, sometimes it helps. Im on MightyRom also. At least until the BuildOS update with our TP2 roms comes out. Then Im cookin my own.

I just went to:
Settings>All Settings>Personal>Phone>CDMA Services>Location Setting>GetSettings> Select LOCATION ON
And my google maps started picking up sats fine. dont know if that will work for you or not.

On the first tab select a com port you want to use with your application, I chose 6.
Click on Hardware TabGPS Hardware Port - None (Baud 4800)
Next tab manage GPS automatically is ticked
Exit - OK
Run Up Memory Map
tap menu>GPS>Setup
Manufacturere = NMEA
Port set to COM 6 or whatever you chose earlier
Baud 4800
Tap OK
Then show the unit the sky and wait !!!!
good luck

Yes.
I use Pocket A-Z London maps and I just set the GPS to COM4/4800 baud in the "Setup ..." option in the A-Z Map program's Tools menu and, even on the very first cold start of the GPS and sitting on the arm of my sofa inside my apartment it still locked onto 8 satellites within about 2 minutes. I couldn't believe it. Truly impressive.

it should work as tomtom too is a 3th party app
With me it's COM port 4 at baud rate 4800.
And in TomTom he locks onto 7 satellites within 10s...
It work perfect with Tomtom and the settings: Other NMEA, Comm4, and 4800. Unbelievable quick fix.
Good to hear Too bad it doesn't work with the "Built-in GPS" setting.
You may want to check Settings -> Communication -> GPS and see if the default GPS device is configured correctly.
Working flawlessly with tomtom. Just use QuickGPS first and you're set.

Of course it works with the "Built-in GPS" setting.
The first time it will take a bit longer to get a fix. And you should run QuickFix first.
Has anyone tried to run 2 GPS applications at the same time? In particular, TomTom with another? On my old P3600 (now lost) I really wanted to run TomTom for navigation and Run.GPS for tracking, but the two would not co-exist, i.e. share the gps signal. I'm hoping the TC will be different, but fear not.

The same as you lose a wallet, keys etc. Easy if you know how! In this case I dropped it off a ski lift
GPS works fines for me with with TomTom, Destinator, Pocket Navigator and Google Maps. I ve tried to have two apps at the same time (tomtom, pocketnavigator) and it works. Hope this helps.
P.S. I didn't change any of the default settings for the GPS.
What is a good program that works with the TP so that I can test to see if my built in gps is working correctly?
I have TOMTOM7 installed and the application works but I can never see any satellites.
I tried mapopolis but i can't seem to establish a connection to the gps.
I updated the gps info using quick gps.
What com port and baud rate does the unit use?
What settings should I have in the "external gps" settings?
Thanks for your help!
Use the attached program to test the GPS.
It will search COM ports automatically
But I guess you can know the port from the settings tabs "External GPS" icon if it's like Kaiser
Anyway, I will be of further use in like 4 days

ok it seems its on com 4 with baud rate of 9600.
ill put it by the window and see if any satellites come up.
The screen just right now says: GPS starting up
Edit: ok great I just got 3 satellites. I guess it works!
Great that it works
You need at least 4 though to get a fix
Kindly, post your radio info and your location and let me know how many satellites did you view (press up on dpad as the 1st screen shows only upto 8 and it can see more, hopefully)

posting the number of satelites you receive is a bit pointless.
This will depend on many factors such as
1) The number of sats viewable at any given time in your area (the sats are not geostationary and therefore move around)
2) The location of the sats during the test - some could be close to the horizon and therefore have a week signal
3) Weather conditions, cloud rain etc,
4) Terrain
etc
etc
Basically, you are right.
But if you are fast enough, you can test several radios in the same 10 mins.
And you can judge by testing in the same place which radio is better for GPS (Fix & View).
A mention of your location will be a referrence for others.
There's a thread with more radio fuss to hold such info to be useful in the future.
Hi pjmiebach - thanks for the hint and the software - I get 4 satellits (yellow beamer) but when I tryit again with Google Maps it finds no Satellite ???
Any explanation from yur side ?
as a matter of fact, on-board GPS works with just about any baud rate you select - so choose the fastest

errr It worked find with TOMTOM7 after taking like 15 min to find it's first fix. Never tried Google maps yet cause my data plan doesn't start until the 8th of Sept.
you can start google maps and check in the right menu for gps and tap that one so it uses the internal gps instead of internetconnection.
it is also a good idea to goto connectionsettings and wipe all existing connections as activesync wont require these and you can download them later from the provider website or by running the carriersetup
ok. ive broken something on my raph. gps was working fine when i flew up to sydneyim guessing ive fiddled with something (external gps setings) and now no worky. tom tom7 is set to internal. if i disable external gps gpstest pauses on com 3 but nothing. if i turn windows on. it stops on com 4 shows some progress bars but they are all at 0 ive soft reset. taken the battery out canter figure out whatsoever wrong. any ideas would be awesome
TT7 and google maps
My tt7 takes 2 - 3 minutes to get a fix.
Google maps takes about 10 secs.
If i start tt7 right after i used gm it takes about 20 secs to get a fix.
I'm gonna try gpsgate and changing the baudrate a bit, see if it helps.
I'll let you know.
** Edit **
GPSGate does the trick for me.
Buy it at your fav appstore and create a new virtual com port for all NMEA progs, go to tt7 gps settings select other nmea device, select the com you just created, at max speed.
com port problem

Me too! :-( No, I really do not enjoy hard resets...
Another nice GPS testing software is VisualGPSce. Be sure to get that.
I wonder if the problem was with QuickGPS. VisualGPSce was telling me that it "saw" 11 satellites, but wasn't able to lock onto any of them. I know that it had worked previously, but then I had a couple of days break and QuickGPS had updated it's data during that time. After the Hard Reset, I haven't used QuickGPS.
About the performance... seems to get fix quite fast, but looses them very easily too. I tracked today a half hour buss ride and I frequently lost the connection. (Sure it was not the most optimal situation...). Also the accuracy wasn't that good - well, either the GPS or Google Maps. actually VisualGPS showed that the GPS wasn't very accurate in following what was happening. The velocity would go to 0 only about 10 seconds after the buss had stopped at trafic lights or buss stop. Actually the buss frequently took of before the GPS showed us stopped. And then it was extremely slow on catching up. On Google Maps you could see the dot still advancing when the buss had stopped for that 10 seconds. Completely off the road - but that might as well be Googles error.
I do not have TomTom on this, but certainly the speed accuracy from VisualGPSce is not nearly as accurate as my TomTom 720.
Check also that the assisted GPS is not active.
If this option is actived, you lose the signal each x seconds.
To check this option I use Advanced config.
Note : I've a Diamond and one Raphael, same configuration, the Diamond find a fix into 40sec and the Raphael takes sometimes 5min!!!.

i find this to be true as well but the kaiser gps radio worked far better than this touch pro in every app I tried. I can put the TP in my car window and get a signal with random disconnects but if i put it in my lap i cant get anything. I could put the kaiser in my trun and be fine lol. Hopefully some upgrades to the radio software will be coming soon. Same result with me with .19 and .31
Hello,
I tested GPSTuner 5.4, VisualGPS, GoogleMaps and TomTom 7 and I have a strange problem... I installed thos programs after hard reset to be sure...
In the GPS information window the GPS position changes but the speed is always 0km/h and in TomTom or GoogleMaps my position on the map don't move...
Have you seens this problem ?
Any kind of solution ?
PLZ....
PS :
Where can I find rom &Radio version ?
What is your TomTom 7 version ?
Hello All..
this is my first post. I just received my TP today via Vodafone. I havwe sucessfully loaded on TomTom 6 and I have it working with the TT external GPS receiver.
can someone advise me whether the Touch Pro's internal GPS will work and if so, how do I go about setting it up.
PS, I only see 4 options in TT6, and none say internal.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
I need some serious help. I tried to get the Fuze GPS to work and I used GPS test and google maps. I had it working briefly. However, now my fuze will not save the hardware settings for the GPS. I have changed them under the hardware profile in system settings. Once I do this and exit, it does not save the changes. When I go back into the settings, they are the default settings again. Any help is appreciated.
What hardware settings?
In google maps settings should point to "managed by windows" in iGO and Garmin to Com4 with a 19200 bitrate in TT either Com4 or NMEA...
The "external GPS" settings. Attempting to change to COM4, but when I exit settings it doesn't save them. It did earlier in the day.
What EXTERNAL GPS unit do you have???
Don't tinker with GPS because most common you'll end up doing a hard reset!!
IF you have an EXTERNAL GPS do NOT set it to COM4 because COM4 is taken by the INTERNAL GPS.
Not using external gps. Using internal one. Try to set to com 4 unsuccesfully

GPS is an issue, there are 1001 post regarding slow lock, no lock, good lock, lag and no lag - P L E A S E do some research.
For now do the following:
Power cycle phone
Go outside
Programs - Navigation - QuickGPS (to get the latest data)
Programs (or where you hide it) - Google Maps
In google maps:
menu - options - GPS settings "should say managed by windows" DO NOT CHANGE
Cancel
Menu
Use GPS and WAIT
You should get a signal within latest 10 minutes outside with an unobstructed sky view.
If NOT we can start to play
Thanks for the information. Will attempt this tomorrow. Great forums and thanks again for the help.
Recently my Google Maps has not been able to lock in on my location closer than 1500 to 1900 meters. I have hard reset and reinstalled GMaps with no luck. I have seen tweaks for Sprint and TMo users and have read that most VZW users are having no problems locking in. Are there any tweaks that I can try for the VZW TP2?
there are numerous gps tweaks to change the cache settings if you search for them. also try using the program quickgps which comes with your phone it will download the closest satellite info. inside my building i cant lock on any sats but outside i can get between 8-9 and within 10 meters of my location
Make sure location is turned on.
If you do the quickgps program on the phone it will turn location on for you and download the closest satelites for you and you should get a lock in like 10 seconds when you are outside.
Unless you turn on location you will just get your general location with google maps, mine said within 2800 meters till I used QuickGPS.
I have duplicated your problem by unchecking the gps option after you open google maps and pressing menu and the down arrow. Make sure the location setting is on as prior post stated and then after you open google maps make sure gps is checked in the menu and it will say that it is searching for satellites.
also make sure you change your gps settings in google to com4 and a baud of 4800
you also have to re-enable the "use gps" after changing this
I was able to dublicate the problem aswell, by accedent >_<, anyway, make sure the location setting for google maps is selected.
confirming what others here are saying, that's pretty much what I experienced with GPS unchecked in the main right softkey menu. If you don't have that checked it's using cell antennas or wifi to approximate your position. "Menu" > "Use GPS" and it should work by default.

Leaving it set to the "Managed by Windows" setting works just fine for me. No issues, and definitely use the Quick GPS program, it saves a headache. In fact im sitting on my couch in my appartment on the bottom of three floors built on the side of a hill with 2 sides of earth, and I have a strong 8 to 9 sats.
I just got my TP2 yesterday and one of the first things I did was install google maps and I was getting result like the title of this thread "within 1800 meters" and it could be a mile off. also the sats were not locking at all. I realized that my position was based on the tower that I was connected to. By the way the google maps on my VX6800 never used the towers to triangulate a position but the gps lock were much slower. Once I ran the quick GPS in the programs menu it turned on the GPS to the right setting and now I get an accurate lock even inside within seconds.
Go to settings-all settings-personal-phone-cdma services-location setting and make sure that it is set to "Location On". If not, you are not actually using the GPS. With that on and with QuickGPS doing it's thing, you will lock instantly.
I have a Verizon TP2 that is two weeks old. It does not have QUICK GPS! Oh yeah, and the gps does not locate.
Do I?
Return it?
Hard Reset? (sounds like a lot of work)
Get the file somewhere?
I have had it twice to Verizon. They have no suggestions but are happy to see the device and get their hands on it.
Leaning towards exchanging it for a new one.

I have been using this phone over a year now, and I have re flashed it at least 10 times, every time to get a taste of a new rom for this phone(currently running 6.5.3), although this phone is cool, but gets sluggish, some time, though I managed to tweak it to work fast, which I will be discussing in later threads, in this thread I am going to answer a simple problem, where the users are unable to use GPS with Google maps to get exact pin-point directions. I found a flaw in the settings, and this generated either "GPS signal too weak" or did not get the right lock. After this setting, you will gain a lock on the satellites almost instantaneously, when you're under the open sky.
SO HERE IS THE TWEAK:
START GOOGLE MAPS APPLICATION.
GO TO MENU (RIGHT SOFT KEY)
ENTER SETTINGS
SELECT "GPS SETTINGS..."
NOW HERE BY DEFAULT IT SAYS "MANAGED BY WINDOWS" CHANGE THIS TO "SET MANUALLY"
SET COM PORT TO "COM3:" AND BAUD RATE TO "9600"
SELECT OKAY, CLICK ON "USE GPS" (SO THAT THE TICK BECOMES GREEN.)
RESTART GOOGLE MAPS, ENJOY.
Google knows everything even on the roads, even in cities like New Delhi, which are densely populated, there was ever this incidence that this device and this awesome technology failed me, it is great to have such tool in your pocket.
