This video I posted is to help people get the custom rom installed which will enable root. This is for people who do not want to go the adb shell way. This method is simpler but will require you to flash a custom ROM onto your phone. You will not have to download the SDK for this method.
*** Use at your own risk. Although i have not come across any one on forums who bricked their phone, there is sill a possibility that this can brick your phone. I take no responsibility if you brick your phone.**
Have tested this on Windows 7 and Windows Xp

Hey everyone, I made a video on this, and some people said I should do a step by step guide, so here goes.
First things first, you are going to need to download these files.
flashrec -- http://zenthought.org/system/files/asset/2/flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk
Amon RA Recover Image 1.6.2 -- http://rapidshare.com/files/360288584/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
Amon RA Recover Image 1.6.2 Mirror -- http://www.4shared.com/file/257274510/180ea19a/recovery-RA-heroc-v162.html
[ROM] MoDaCo 1.1 Custom ROM (has firmware 1.5) -- http://content.modaco.net/hero/1.1-update-heroc-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip
OR

OR
[ROM] Fresh Rom 2.0d (has firmware 2.1) --
http://geekfor.me/new-release/fresh-20d
Do not extract the Rom zip file, it needs to stay in the zip.
Ok, lets do this in steps, should make it easier:
Step 1: Mount the sd card and place all the files downloaded onto the root of the sdcard.
Step 2: Download some sort of file manager, ex Estrongs File Manager, and run/open the flashrec apk.
Step 3: Once it's finished installing, unplug the usb cable, run the app, and hit the button, "backup recovery image". If you get an error, try rebooting your phone, make sure the usb cable is unplugged.
Step 4: Exit app, and mount the sd card again, and move recovery-backup.img to your desktop, then rename recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to recovery-backup.img
Step 5: Unmount sdcard, unplug usb cable, and go back into the flashrec app(should be named recovery flasher in all programs list)
Step 6: hit restore backup image. Once finished flashing, power down phone.
Step 7: After you power down your phone, hold the Vol Down button, then hold down the power button. Phone should boot into hboot. Press home for recovery.
Step 8: To ensure you have a backup of your phone before we continue, do a nandroid v2.2 backup.
Step 9: After the nandroid backup is complete, you can now choose apply "sd card update choose", and choose the modaco or damage control rom
Step 10: Reboot your phone and you should be all set.
Any issues or anything unclear, let me know and I will try to help make it clear.

Just to confirm, the steps in this vid are all I need to do to get the phone rooted with the modaco rom. I don't need to go through all the other steps as long as I'm cool with flashing the rom?

What was the error you got in the vid when you did the backup with flashrec? Because I get the same error. It says "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." and I never get a button that says restore.
Should I type recovery.img in before I hit backup?

It was because I left the usb cable connected. It was being weird.
reboot fixed that.... standby....
Booted in hboot mode, pressed home for the recovery menu, HTC logo came up... then a huge

Rebooted itself after a moment and now seems normal.
Thoughts?

Nope. Same thing. I backup and it says backup complete. I enter recovery.img into the blank field (which is what I renamed the img file to) and hit restore and it says flash complete (or something). Then, I turn off my phone, reboot in hboot mode, hit home, get the HTC logo, then bam-- scary warning/dead phone symbol.
I'm gonna try one more thing....

Ok, let's try this. Rename the recovery img file to the name that flash rec makes. It should be recovery-backup.img . This method is said not to work with some phones. If this is correct, you're going to have to use the other method.
Rename it and then do flash rec again, or rename it and go straight to the hboot sequence?

Correct!
That was shockingly simple! /sarcasm
If you did a back-up with nandroid beforehand, just pull the system, boot and data partitions off your SD card and flash them in the SPL the same way you updated to cupcake.
If you did not back-up your phone, you will need to start fresh with an official ROM. Grab either the RC29 (US) or RC7 (UK) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480and copy it over to your SD Card. Boot your phone into SPL mode and you should be prompted automatically to start an update. When this completes, you will have to get root on your phone again and update to JF 1.3

you probably don't have service its happen to me once try moving to better signal
EDIT: DiD You do a wipe from recovery?
if not try that too
Step 1. Download JF RC30 Mod ( http://android-dls.com/files/jf/v1.31/JFv1.31_RC30.zip )
Step 2. Rename from JFv1.31_RC30.zip to update.zip
Step 3. Copy update.zip to the root of your SD card.
Step 4. Turn off phone (hold red (end) button, click "Power off")
Step 5. Hold Home+Red to enter Recovery Mode.
Step 6. Press CTRL+W to wipe
Step 7. Press CTRL+S to "update". (this will put you back to RC30 modded)
(optional) Step 7.b. Press CTRL+W again to be safe.
Step 8. Press Home+Back to reboot phone
Step 9. Let Android completely boot
Step 10. Delete update.zip from your sd card.
Step 11. Power off the phone again, and boot using Home+Red (to enter recovery again)
Step 12. Press CTRL+B to make a nand backup.
Step 13. Don't mess with cupcake or other developer builds unless you know what you're doing.
EDIT: Also for Step 12, this creates a folder called "nandroid" in the root of your sd card. I recommend you back this folder up into a safe place. This folder now contains (if you followed my steps correctly) a backup of a stock RC30 mod.
If you decide to mess with your phone, and end up not liking it again:
Step 1. Make sure you have HardSPL installed on your phone (search forums for that.)
Step 2. Get a copy of fastboot (tested and proven to work on Windows Vista [for me atleast])
Step 3. Copy boot.img, data.img, and system.img to the same location as fastboot
Step 4. Power off phone.
Step 5. Hold camera button and Red button until you see the 3 androids skateboarding
Step 6. Make sure your cable is plugged in, and press the back button one time (phone should now read "FASTBOOT" instead of "SERIAL0")
Step 7. Type the following commands:
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
This will set your phone back to its original state.
koush, that was an awesome statement made by an image...lol..... seems like there is a lot of spoonfeeding going on now that everyone has root.......

ShiftRRv1.0
Shift Root and Recovery will be able to root you're phone in a pretty safe manner. The program is designed to only flash the eng boot if the MD5 checksums are correct.
This does it by simply pushing / pulling the hboot from the phone and checking the MD5 as if you were to manually do it. Only this just does it automatically.
Check Root:
This will just run a quick and simple SU test to make sure you are or are not rooted.
Root:
You will click on this to install the ENG Hboot and load the correct files after the Hboot has been flashed.
Install Recovery:
You simply select the recovery image you want to use with your HTC Evo Shift. Leave the phone at the home screen and click install. It will auto reboot you to bootloader, flash the zip then auto reboot you to recovery to make sure it flashed successfully.
Backup / Restore WIMAX:
This option lets you quickly and easily backup your wimax keys to your home pc. It will also let you restore your wimax keys to your phones partitions.
[WHAT THIS PROGRAM DOES]
When you click on root, and click "NO" for this phone does not have a ENG Hboot. The program push's the ENGHboot from the Hboot folder to the phone and push's busybox. From there it gets a temp root shell. It then cross checks the MD5sum on the phone itself using busybox md5sum /data/local/eng_hboot if the MD5Sum math's it then proceed's with the dd if cmd. Once the dd if cmd is done. The program then sends the dd if cmd to /data/local/eng_hboot_check, it runs the cmd busybox md5sum again and verifies that the MD5Sum matches if so everything went well, the program cleans up its mess off the phone and alerts you its safe to reboot. IF IT FAIILS it will try 1 more time. The program is designed to check the HBOOT md5sum and verify if its the ORIG hboot if it is not and the MD5Sum doesn't check between the ENG and ORIGINAl it will attempt to flash the original and notify you if it succeeds. IF IT FAILS AGAIN. IT WILL NOTIFY YOU NOT TO TURN OFF YOUR PHONE AND COME HERE FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. I ADVISE YOU TO LISTEN.
After this YOU MUST REBOOT THE PHONE.
When phone is powered up again Click Root again this time select "YES" that the phone has a ENGHboot, this will get temp root again and push all the needed files, "SQLITE3", "BusyBOX", "SU", "Superuser.apk" to there proper location.
If YOU CLICK "YES" and didnt have the ENG Hboot thats fine it simply will temp root you and push files to your phone, but when you reboot they will be gone. Just start from the begining again and do it again.

I was trying to root, and I have windows 7 64 bit
Where is the link ! someone please give me the file , pretty please please please been waiting for this !!!
I don't know if this is what it's trying to achieve or not. I don't know how to do it either. Judging by all my previous phones, an all in one script could be written to do everything the s-off, root, and recovery post is telling how to do. Just a "simple" batch file and some support files and presto, it's all done!
Zip everything needed together and just unzip and run. I could probably teach myself by ripping apart other all in one packages and adjusting my port to follow loosely what they are doing but I just don't have the free time to spend on that project. By the time I would get around to doing it, someone else would have finished it. I just don't know things like telling the phone to reboot into different modes so it could continue it's job. I can visualize it in my head but making it a reality is completely different. Doh!
Anyone know where the download link went? I've been having trouble with rooting my phone and wanted to try this, but theres no download link in the first post (unless my computer decided to stop showing links).
Link was removed temporarily. Learn to read guys, sheesh
On a side note, I'm pretty psyched about this OP, since I haven't had the ambition to sit down and root my phone yet. Just curious, are there any files that would need to be downloaded prior to using this (such as the ****-root.zip used in the other root method)?
Oops, saw everything except "removed temp..." in the first post.
It looks like there isn't anything extra that needs to be downloaded. Looks like the OP figured out a way around it.

Possibly the recovery files ( clockworkmod 2.x or 3.x ) and have HTC sync set up to even connect the phone I would guess.

Sorry guys will work on this again in a few days girl is supposed to be going in to labor today...
On the side note the issue that I ran into is that running rageagainstthecage from the windows side does not give you root. It actually disables usb connection between the phone and the computer. I was trying to make this so you didnt need anything other then the program. But now with that being a problem z4root would be needed to obtain at least temp root but if i doesnt drop you to # then it still will not work from doing it automatically using arguments. That is what i'm trying to resolve first..
Ill get back to you guys on it, and ill even add the option to restore wimax keys.
That's what I was thinking You have to Temp root with Z4root first.
Since The manual root requires super user to work.
Dude!!!! thank you so much for this. Been wanting t root badly but was afraid to try the other method. Good luck with baby!!
Perhaps someone brave could test it out by temp rooting with visionary/z4root and then running the program? If you posted the download link back up.
Hi all,
I have successfully flashed ROMS for my Gtab for over a month now. Tonight, though I have a problem. I decided to to NVFlash back to stock (which I have done successfully several times), so APX mode works. However, THIS time, the Gtab does what I believe is that Bootloop thing. I have read threads about it, but I don't quite understand what I do to fix it.
So I get into APX mode - then what? Again - Again, I have tried NVFlash and this time it will not boot into stock - It just loops from the Viewsonic screen to the G Tablet screen over and over again.
I appreciate being rescued from my disaster.
Thanks!
Mark
mlinder1958,
I am understanding you have nvflashed and are having boot loops.
If so, you can usually re-partition with ClockWorkMod and that normally will
fix it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844088
When you get CWM installed, reboot into recovery (CWM) with power/volume+. Go to the
advanced menu and partition. Take a few minutes--don't panic. The Fix Permissions.
Then Wipe Dalvic Cache. The go back to the Main Menu and Wipe Cache and then
Wipe/Reset Factory Data. The reboot and hopefully you will come up running right.
If not, the re-do the nvflash back to stock.
Hope this helps.
Rev
Hi Rev,
Thanks for replying.
Here is the problem. When I enter APX mode, I hear the PC (Windows 7) make its little beep sound and the gtab screen goes blank, but there is no dos prompt window opening in windows unless I run the gtablet .bat file. This is where I am confused. Since i am getting into apx mode, how do i move put recoery and update.zip back onto the gtablet since no indication (drive letter) of the gtablet appears?
Again, I can run NVFlash and the dos prompt appears, showing the progress and the gtablet black screen displays the nvflash info at the top.
I know I need to get CWM back on there. I just don't know how to do it from APX mode withou a drive letter appearing.
Thanks again.
Mark
mlinder1958,
I gave you the CWM link so you could download the correct CWM file.
Now we need someone to come along who can tell you how to use nvflash
to load CWM into your tablet. I have never used that procedure as I have
used my microSD card in /SDCARD2 whenever I have needed it.
I will see if I can find the procedure, but you need to be looking too. If you
can flash CWM on the tablet, then you can follow my repair process.
Rev
To fash CWM recovery with nvflash, you follow the same procedure as flashing back to stock but replace part9.img in the stock image with the .img file extracted from the cwm zip download rnamed to part9.img.
So I rename update.zip to part9.img?

Unzip and extract the recovery.img - then rename THAT to part9.img (and backup the old file first, of course).
roebeet,
Oh man, what an honor!
Anyway, when I extract the zip it gives me the recovery folder and the update.zip file, which I am famliar with. Howewver, I see no recovery.img file. Or did I find/unzip the wrong file?
sorry for the long drawn out call for HELP
Mark
confirmed. I am confused. I cannot find any file called recovery.img after I unzip the CWM 08 zip file.
any help is appreciated.
Mark
The recovery.img is inside the update.zip... keep extracting ;-)
The recovery.img is inside the update.zip. It's a "file inside a zip inside a zip". I used to do this early on, but later started using rar files to make it less confusing.
No worries on the thread - you made me blush.
Roebeet and Rev,
I AM DE-BRICKED!
Thank you so much for your help.
Maybe a oughtta tone down my flashing for awhile : )
You guys ROCK!

The "Can't Mount" error has been consistant for a while. Also something else I forgot was that when connected through USB to the PC, I can't see the device in My Computer. It is there and does allow an NVFlash though.
My gTablet is in the same boat after reflashing it after using VeganTab v7.0. I'm going to try the recovery.img rename this afternoon to get it out of the bootloop.
I was unlocking the bootloader so i could root the phone. I was successful but now my phone is stuck on the google screen with the unlocked pad at the bottom.
Through the forum i found that i'm missing the boot image so i found that.
I pulled in my phone to the computer and typed "fastboot flash boot test_boot.img". it comes up with "error: cannot load test_boot"
The same thing happened when i tried to "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" aswell to try and fix it that way but the same error came up.
I made sure the file names were correct.

do you have the proper drivers installed? if not, go directly to PdaNets website http://junefabrics.com/android/ and have it install the proper drivers onto your computer. this way is by far the easiest way to install the drivers. download and install the free program then just follow the directions on the screen.

OK, i did a system restore and now i have pdaNet back. I have no idea how to use it or what to do next.
Please help!
EDIT: when i typed "fastboot devices" into CMD, it shows my device!
take a screenshot of your /sdk/tools folder.
(seriously do it).
OR if you don't want to.. does fastboot appear as "fastboot" or "fastboot.exe" ?

Okay, yeah. I see the problem, your extensions are hidden "recovery.img" is actually "recovery.img.img" so you're fastbooting a invalid file. What I want you to do is on the top left of a Windows explorer, it says Organize. Press that and go to folder options -> view -> hide extensions for known file types (UNCHECK THIS). Rename recovery.img.img so it appears as recovery.img not recovery.img.img
Put your phone in bootloader mode if it isn't already with USB plugged in.
The phone needs to be in bootloader mode in order for it to recognize the fastboot command.

^ appears as that.
through command prompt
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools\
(optional -- do this if your phone isnt in bootloader mode) adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

yeah that meant it worked. you can access clockwork menu by going down to RECOVERY in the menu or "adb reboot recovery"
you install a ROM by...
1. Shop around the Dev forums and look for what ROM you want to use. I personally use CM7.
2. Use netarchy's kernel (its worth it).
Steps:
1. Put ROM onto your sdcard
2. Boot into Clockwork Recovery (told you above on how to do it)
3. Wipe Factory, Dalvik, Cache
4. Flash ROM (Proceed to flash CM7 Gapps afterwards if you decide to go with CM7)
5. Flash Kernel (Optional)
6. Reboot!
Ahhh, i updated without looking at your post first. Can i put the kernal on now that ive rebooted?
thank you for your help and time

First things first make sure you download and install the MTK drivers from here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/76038325/MTK_Drive.zip and download and extract the SP Flash tool from here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/76038325/SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1220.01.zip
Warning! This is at your own risk,i am not responsible for any damage this may do to your device and always backup before
1: Download Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip and put on the root of your sd card
2: Download CWM H2000+.zip and unzip it
3: go to where you unzipped SP Flash Tool, right click flash tool and run as Admin
4: once opened Click the “Scatter-loading” button
5: Go to where you unzipped CWM H2000+.zip and load the scatter file
6: Power off the phone completely
7: click Download in the SP Flash tool,Click yes and connect the phone to USB
8: Once flashed you should see the green circle, when you see this its safe to remove the device
9: Press the power on + volume up buttons to go into CWM recovery
10: when in CWM backup your rom making sure you have a min of 1gb free on the memory card
11: once finished go to install zip, select from sd card and go to Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip and install
12: once intalled go back to the main CWM,wipe cache and go advance and wipe dalvic cache
13: reboot the phone
14: You are now rooted
15: Enjoy!
*Please note this will not work if you are running windows 8
Help Please. Clould not Root it.
Step
8: Once flashed you should see the green circle, when you see this its safe to remove the device
Did not see the circle, Only to colored bars full at 100%.
Step
11: once finished go to install zip, select from sd card and go to Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip and install
The files is on sdcard but i can not find it. I can see only a list of directories.
What is going rong? How can i check if i have rooted my phone?
Thanks.:good:
make sure you have the drivers intalled correctly, when you open flash tool make sure you open as admin and put the superuser zip on the main bit of the sd card, not in any folders and should work, when you reboot to see if it has worked you will see the superuser app in the app draw.
I´m looking forward to try your rooting method since i only want to get rid of the three annoying buttons at the buttom, but is there anyone who could tell me how to do a BACKUP in case something goes wrong and i want to get my phone into its original form? there are a lot of threads about it, i know, but i didnt understand them. could one of you please tell me how to? THANKS :good:
Still can not root it.
My friend thanks for your time.
But i still can not root my phone. I had try deferent computers but nothing. Is it possible to find some other drivers? Because at the procedure i am hearing two times the connection and disconnection of the USB. (At Xp and Win 7). I made all the steps as you describe. I believe that is a driver problem but i do not know how to resolve it. Any suggestions? Thanks again for your time.:good:

Good night to all, sorry for opening this old thread but I'm in a biggest problem(not for you guys). Explain the problem:
I want to root my phone, a Hero H2000+, following this tutorial and others. When root is OK I try to backup the system with CWM Recovery but the backup doesn't make full. The backup always stop in the Backup system... and this doesn't continue. Because this doesn't continues I restore defaults in the Android system, but when the phone reboots it enter into recovery mode(CMW Recovery) and then "Formatting /data" and "Formatting /cache" and then??? It doesn't reboot, this stay here. On this stage I was bloked but following this tutorial my phone now reboots when enter to CWM Recovery and reboot and reboot. Fuc**** loops!!! What can I do to revive the phone???!!
The CWM Recovery I used is ClockworkMod 6.0.2.8 with Scatter and flashed with SPFlash Tool v3.1222.00.
Thanks a lot for the replies
Update: I flash again with another ROM I downloaded from a China page and the phone boots OK. If someone wants the ROM stock, please send me a MP and I will give you the download link.
Thanks and sorry for the post. I'm very preocupated!
