Hey guys,
I bought a BlackBerry Bold 9000 last tuesday, and I am thinking about getting the AT&T Fuze. I was just wondering what would the benefits would be if I switched besides having a touch screen. I heard that the Fuze runs slow and that my blackberry is a lot faster. I was just wondering what all of your thoughts are on the Fuze (or Touch Pro) vs the Bold. I am not sure what device I want to have for 2 years or so. I figure since you guys use them everyday you would have some good input.

well imo:
-better operating system: wm6.1
-more broader range of applications available
-vga screen
-tv-out
-memory expandable to 32gig's (when ofcourse 32 gigs cards become avail )
-a whole array of developers cooking roms/creating apps for device/os
-288mb of ram
-built-in gps (not sure if this exists on bold as i know nothing about blackberry phones or their specs, don't care)
ultimately it boils down to your taste. I have always hated blackberry's and never will own one. I know pretty much the whole corporate usa is hooked on blackberry's but i am not for them ... i'ld rather have a device that runs on windows and has flexibility in terms of app development and expansion.
hope this helps.
I went to the AT&T store thurs and played with the bold and didnt like it one bit. First off, you can't customize the bold near as much as you can with the fuze. Secondly, the community(XDA) for the fuze is much better than the bolds community(crackberry). Lastly, the range of different apps is much larger for the fuze than for the bold. Ohh yea if you want to create word docs on the bold you would have to buy the pro version of docs-to-go(~$70) where as you can do that for free on the fuze with office mobile. The list goes on as to how the fuze beats the bold.
Dude, you're in the middle of XDA-Developers, the website every mobile blogger gets tons of information from because it's all available here, the place where there are always tons of developers working on different software to improve/fix/enhance the Windows Mobile experience on HTC devices, and you're asking why the Fuze would be better than a Blackberry?
Point made.
hahaha agreed
and yes the bold has gps but from what i see its either at&t software or google maps that can be used. while the fuze can use google, live search, TomTom, igo and garmin software (additional purchase required for the last three)
if you are a blackberry user, u will love the bold, cause its a decent upgrade to whatever you were using before. other wise just get the fuze, much higher celing.
If he's not convinced by now, look at this review:
http://gizmodo.com/5075236/att-blackberry-bold-review-best-blackberry-yet
They call it the "best Blackberry yet" and still have bad things to say about it. 2 different browsers for WiFi/3G, seriously?
my opinion
im a long time windows mobile user, i got the fuze the day it came out, after constantly playing with it and the software and settings and apps, 4 hard resets in a week, my wife who has a curve said checkout a blackberry, after i got up off the floor from laughing i said why not, hmmmm faster processor, 1gb on board storage, up to 32gb card, i said why not, went to att the next day and swapped for the bold thinking why am i doing this, well after a week i cant put it down. the reason there arent many hacks or roms is because you dont need them, my battery lasts for days not minutes, never locks up or even slows down, downloaded nav4all works perfectly and links up wayyyy faster than my fuze, i keep my phone in my pocket and my fuze even with mortsaver would call people on its own, never happens with the bold, the only difference really is fuze had a 3.2 mp camera and the bold is 2 mp, instead of hours editing the registry finding fixes wondering why my weather isnt working constantly hacking it, i spend hours actually using my phone, wow!!! what a concept, the email is flawless, i tried for over a year to get my company email on my tilt and never did, set it up in about 30 seconds on the bold. the fuze ruined my 4gb memory card the first day i had it, lucky for me i had it backed up, put an 8gb in it then at times it was there or not there, took it out put it in my bold no problems at all!! music player smokes windows media player and it has a 3.5mm jack, the bluetooth also hooks up faster with more options to my car stereo than my fuze did. basically when i read your posts i could only imagine the answers you would get at an all wm website, but remember you always have 30 days to swap it out if you dont like it, (i did keep my tilt just in case) so id say take the bold for a spin you may be really surprised what you find, dont think ill be going back to the tilt!!!

I agree about the reason there aren't any hacks for the BlackBerry and the CrackBerry community looks downs on hacks lol!!
I currently have a curve and and the CB community is like 1 huge family..
Man I can't wait to get my fuze!
I'm so excited about getting it!

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new FUZE. Before I do, I was hoping some current owners could answer a few questions for me. I'm not a newbie to smart phones or WinMo, so I do understand some of the limitations of the device. My last phone wasn't a smart phone and I sorely miss not having it.
I was at the local AT&T shop to play with the FUZE in person, and honestly I wasn't at all impressed with the speed or the interface.
The sensitivity of touch was pretty bad, and I really had to push on the screen for it to register my finger. I've read on these boards that the sensitivity can be changed, so my question is, Can it be changed enough to be usable? It was pretty bad in the showroom.
The lag of the device was totally unacceptable to me. I would often not know if a key-press or screen gesture actually worked, and found myself hitting the key multiple times, only to realize it had registered the first time, but was taking forever to respond. I've read here that flashing the ROM and other tweaks improve the lag time, but does it improve it enough? Is there any lag time after using a cooked ROM? I understand that things may lag on occasion, but if there is a lag for most functions, I don't think I could put up with it too long.
Web browsing was a test of patience to say the least. It took a very long time for any page to load, and when it did load, it seemed to render in chunks very slowly. I was often confused if the page was even fully loaded after a minute or two. Is this experience to be expected, or can it be it be fixed?
I may just be confused about the contacts section. Do you have to scroll through each individual contact to get to the one you want? I have a couple hundred contacts in my phone now, and if I need to get to someone who starts with "N", that would take quite a while. I'm sure there is a better way, and I would just need to find out how to do it, but I wanted to ask first, as this could be a huge deal breaker for me.
It took me a while to find the call history on the phone. It seems like it's buried pretty deep. Is there anyway to modify the Touchflo3d icons to point to items I frequently use? I mean really I don't need the AT&T icon there at all, since I'll never use any of those features. I'd much rather have my call history available from the menu. Is this even possible?
I've read a lot of comments about the D-pad. I'm a gamer when on the road, so I need to make sure this phone will be able to handle my gaming needs. I didn't have the opportunity to try any games on it. Is the D-pad really an issue, and if it is, has there been a workaround?
I love the idea of having a touch screen. I need a phone that offers easy to use messaging and email features. I want simple access to my contacts, and easy to use phone functions. I also want a good web browsing experience, access to my MP3 files, and video files, as well as a decent gaming platform. Oh and I do like to tweak my toys. Is this the phone for me, or should I be looking at something different?
I appreciate anyone taking the time to answer any of these questions.
i have a fuze and love it alot. the sensitivity on the touch screen was bad until you change the registry key that controls it and of course a good screen calibration. its set for such a heavy touch. i changed it to ultrasensitive and its like using an iphone now. there are alot of registry keys to increase the performance. its real easy with diamond tf3d config app. best choice is to flash to a new rom though. the oem rom is junked up with so much crap. diamond tf3d conifig will help you change touch flo 3d to your liking. as far as a gaming device the dpad is a difficult thing to use tbh. and with the graphics drivers still not working right its not a good gaming device. in every other context, it is a good phone. it just takes some work to get it there.
Thanks for the input TJOC.
How is the FUZE as a phone? I mean, how easy is it to access your contacts, voice mail, or just make a call?
Best phone I have had. Most of what you point out in your message can be adjusted automatically or via a tweak or registry change. You would like this flexibility on something you own.
its not bad. the call history, calendar, voicemail (only if you have some messages) and contacts are right on the home tab. you can actually change the softkeys on the home tab to do other actions for you too. theres also one tab to the right called people which is a neat flippy interface if you assign pictures. when i go to my people tab it actually crashes touch flo 3d. i have to figure out what i did to make it do that.
i do have to say that for an htc phone it is the best for being a phone. ive used quite a few htc phones and they always have issues like bad signal, and most notably the volume and call quality have been pretty awful. but on the fuze its loud and clear.
that said its still not a phone for everyone. if you use speakerphone alot, then this may not be the phone for you. and alot of people cant handle windows mobile (i always say wm is not for beginners hehe). i would say try out the phone. att will let you take it back if you dont like it. and i wont call you crazy if you say you dont.

Speaker phone not too much an issue for me. I'm familiar with WinMo, so that won't be a problem either, heck I still use my Dell Axim
I think I'm going to take your advice, and just grab one. If I'm not happy I'll exchange it for a Bold or something.
I didnt like the Fuze stock as well but after tweaking it i love it, i would hard reset and then reset it right before it install all the att stuff back, when you get the phone and reinstall touchflo from the software column for raphael. that alone would make your device alot faster and then you can tweak it some mroe to make it even faster...since its your first Winmo phone read up on flashing and other themes or today screen...you can use other UI instead of TF3D just find one that you like. Cheers report back when you get the Fuze.
mfarlo,
I just got my Fuze a few days ago, and am loving it. I had a Cingular 8525 that I modified with new ROMs from this site. I'm looking forward to upgrading my Fuze after I see how it does out of the box.
I got a great deal going through myself when purchasing it. If you're interested in checking out what I can do for you, please let me know.

i too was unhappy with the fuze when i tested it out in the store, but after reflashing RRE 4.4.5 custom rom this phone is amazing, the signal strength is awesome, call quality is crystal clear for me, and the phone is lightning quick. if you buy a fuze play with it for a few days while you are reading up on flashing a new rom as it is a must with this phone, its like night and day. the phone has been out for a while now and the roms on this site keep getting better and better, you will not be dissapointed if you buy it.
From my experience with 4 Fuze's...Touchscreen sensitivity to a finger is adequate, although the stylus takes considerable pressure, especially at the edges of the screen. 2 of the Fuze's were slightly more sensitive, and two were slightly less, but none have the sensitivity of the older devices with recessed screens.
Sensitivity aside, you have to rely on the responsiveness of everything else, and that sucks for the most part. Performance "tweaks" and screen sensitivity "tweaks", either done manually with a registry editor, or with a program like AdvancedConfig do absolutely nothing. I've spent many hours comparing back and forth and didn't notice a single discernable difference. The device is sluggish no matter what you do to it (aside from flashing ROM's which i'm not doing). Try operating the phone with a song playing in the TouchFlo music player and it will be an exercise of patience. Disabling TouchFlo does speed things up, but that's a poor fix if part of the reason you purchased a Fuze was for TouchFlo (which I did). I'm perplexed by the folks who claim such a speedy device.
The Dpad is absolute garbage. Up/down work fine, left/right works about 80% of the time if you press in a very specific spot to the outside of the touch sensitive ring by a few millimeters. Funny, it takes extreme accuracy to scroll right or left, but 50% of the time when I try to hang up a call by pressing in the extreme lower right corner, it jumps out to the main menu and starts scrolling right with the call still in progress. I've had quite a few "I want to throw the phone as hard as possible" moments with that issue. The quality of the Dpad has varied from device to device, but none of them were anywhere near good. I can't imagine using it for gaming.
Opera loads webpages pretty quick for me. Unfortunately anything that requires touchscreen input like zooming or selecting links doesn't work so well. Generally I double tap 2-3 times before it zooms in or out. I'm not sure if it's a system issue, or a touchscreen problem. Zooming with the touch ring works well, but unfortunately, for me, the page won't reformat and the text won't wrap using the ring. Trying to zoom with the ring to make a link bigger so that it's clickable, results in the page moving and intermittent reloading of the page, then the link moves out of view. The problem is more common on certain pages and less on others.
Reception has been good, but the earpiece speaker issue looks like one that isn't going to get fixed. Even after loading a few alternate audiopara files, the speaker isn't loud enough, and when you do get lucky and call someone who's voice comes in at a higher volume, the speaker distorts. Pressing the sharp edge of the top rim of the phone against your ear, which I find myself doing often, results in soreness after. Fun!
Long term durability seems questionable, and the battery covers on all 4 phones that i've had suffered creakyness along the edges where the cover doesn't sit against the frame of the phone tightly. One even slid side to side everytime the device was handled.
I'm keeping the one I have now, it seems to be the best out of the 4, but still suffers from all of the issues listed above. Of course the keyboard was installed totally crooked, but it's par for the course with HTC. I'll never understand people who say HTC = great build/materials quality. I find it hard to believe i'm the only one who's struck out so many times. Not only with the Fuze, but with a Tilt and an 8525 before it. It's unfortunate that HTC seems to have cornered the market on this particular form factor for Windows Mobile. I would go with Xperia, but now that the metal cases are cracking left and right, I suppose I should pass. Way to go HTC.
One upside, the VGA screen is really nice, big improvement over QVGA.
Good luck.

the fuze/touch pro is a love or hate phone. as far as a windows mobile phone i would say this is the best there is. htc will not be out done when it comes to windows mobile phones. and no windows mobile devices have capacitive screens so its not the most brilliant for touch screen but its not bad tbh. good luck with your purchase and hopefully it will be as pleasant of an experience for you as it is for me.
somethings to remember, find a newer build of opera. i had downloaded build 15202 from this site. pages will load faster and theres some tweaks you can do to get 0 mobile websites. theres also a registry entry that will give you a zoom slider which is a nice touch for web pages than relying on the scroll wheel. and if you dont have good volume in a phone call, make a call to the phone and up the volume with the rocker during the call. it sounds weird but you can only adjust the call volume while making a call.
Get The Fuze!!!
After being almost scared away from the Fuze when I handled it in an AT&T store, I quickly went home and checked on XDA to see what could be done about the TERRIBLE performance. I found TONS of options for tweaks, fixes, and ROMs. After a LOT of reading and deliberating, I decided that the RRE HTC Fuze ROMs were for me. I'm currently running RRE v4.4.5SE which is AMAZING!!! My Fuze feels like it runs 1000% faster! It's great!
Get the Fuze; if you don't already know how, read about flashing; flash the RRE Fuze ROM (linked in my signature below), and ENJOY! You WON'T regret it!!!
Best of luck,
NR
I have the Fuze and one of the bad things about it is the battery life, If you are really going to be on the phone alot I'd suggest buying an extra battery lik i did.
Thanks for all the comments, I am now a proud owner of an AT&T FUZE.
First thing I did was remove all the bloatware as described in tyguy's excellent post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459335
It looks like I'm going to be spending quite a bit of time tweaking this beast until I get it just the way I want it, but that's the draw for me. I could have grabbed an iPhone and had everything I needed, but where's the fun in that? When I'm done with my tweaks, I'll have a phone custom tailored to suite my needs.
thats what i was thinking. the iphone doesnt need customization partially because you cant customize it to make it your own. the fuze may need alot of work when you take it out of the box but once you got it how you like it, its more made for you then an iphone. thats a downside for some people but ive been having loads of fun tinkering. my brother and my dad bough iphones and i poke at them doing things they cant, divx, tethering, garmin, taking pictures with flash, sending mms. i know theyre jealous because they bought the wrong phone.
Moved to the FUZE from the Tilt and after missing my D-Pad for awhile until I figured out the Fuze's pad, I now miss nothing.
I've had a lot of excellent PDA/Phones over the years, and have been a WinMo guy since PocketPC2000, and the Fuze is just yet another small step closer to the perfect combination device. I just STILL want a bigger screen.
As far as battery life goes, I use it just as hard as my Tilt, and get a bit more life out of the battery. I'm not sure what the huge complaint is, a dead battery at the end of the night is a good day. A phone that goes DAYS on a charge I haven't had since my Motorola V60
i miss the "dpad" from my ppc6700 (htc apache). it had a joystickish thing which worked well. but if im going to say i miss any one thing from that phone it would have to be the keyboard. you will never find a better keyboard on any other phone ever. and thats a challenge.
Figure I'd start documenting all the work I'm putting into my Raphael (an unlocked AT&T Fuze). Been lurking here at XDA for a little over a year now. Only recently have I been able to afford to purchase a smartphone to replace my Sony Ericsson M600i (R.I.P. UIQ), and the community development here at XDA really excited me so I decided to go with a HTC.
After some comparative research at GSMArena (great search functions there), I settled on an AT&T Fuze. I really wanted a hardware keyboard (though I admit the iPhone on-screen keyboard is pretty good too), world quad band support (You absolutely NEED 850mhz here in Canada, but was also doing some traveling for work over the holidays), GPS (for said travels, and my usual propensity to be lost), and Wifi. All that, I figured, could make the Fuze a possible on-the-go computer replacement for me.
Found a cool seller over at HardForums that was great to deal with and 2 weeks later I had my Fuze (first impressions later).
On a sidenote, something that I will also be talking about in this string of posts is how Rogers Canada decided to lock smartphones out of their unlimited WAP browsing plan, trying to force their prepaid customers to switch to huge data contracts. So I'm looking to switch to alternatives such as Petro-Canada and 7-Eleven SpeakOut prepaid to see if I can get unlimited WAP with my Fuze.
That's it for now. Next post I'm going to talking about my first impressions of the Fuze.
First Impressions
First impression of the Fuze: Its heavy, and it attracts finger prints/grease like no other gadget I've ever owned. I have no idea why someone thought it'd be a good idea to have a shiny reflective backing for the bottom of a phone, not to mention its BLACK, so everything shows up. Another thing I didn't quite like was the way the slide-out keyboard joint felt really loose when the keyboard was closed, almost like I could pry it apart if I wasn't careful.
The weight really did surprise me. I thought I had a heavy phone when I had a Panasonic VS7 a few years back, but this thing is leagues beyond. I was surprised to find that I can't even blame a big battery. Its a whole 20g heavier than the similiarly spec Xperia X1 (which my friend has). 20g might not sound like much, but when the phone is only 145g, you can definitely feel the difference.
One thing I did like was the screen, I've never had a phone with better than QVGA res, and this VGA screen really shines. Everything is so sharp. And though people say that WinMo isn't as finger friendly as the iPhone (my friend has an old Elf with WinMo 6.0, I can definitely agree with that sentiment there, but I upgraded it for him ), the 280xx builds definitely help that and my fingers are pretty small to begin with.
Speaking of builds, the seller was nice enough to unlock the phone, and had already HardSPL'd and install a new ROM on it (an older TAEL 280xx Sense release). And let me tell you, seeing something you've read and researched on for over a year finally in action is a lot of fun.
Next post, flashing a new ROM and radio, and porting over my contacts from the old phone.
Flashing ROM and Radio
The original phone came with TAEL's v1.28xxx ROM, and the 1.02.25.19 radio. First thing I wanted to do was get one of the more up-to-date ROMs. I like my phone to have a clean, non-cluttered look, and after looking around the Raphael ROM forum I decided to stick with TAEL (EnergyROM looked highly functional as well, but looked a bit too busy for my liking). I choose the standard/Titanium release for the same reason (I never liked TouchFlo, as cool as it looks).
The phone was already HardSPL'd, so flashing was easy. Use the MicroSD method (EXCELLENT guide on the sub-forum, as expected from XDA), and in a couple minutes I had the ROM flashed and started trying out different things with my new phone, like web browsing and GPS. This was the point when I found out that Rogers had locked smartphones out of their unlimited WAP plan, which really ticked me as I had bought the Raphael for its better data capabilities than my M600i. HowardForums confirmed my findings, and that's when I started looking for other prepaid providers that have unlimited browsing (more on that in another post).
Luckily I still had Wi-fi to play with. The reception was pretty poor in my house but moving around a bit found a spot that the Raph can hold a connection. After spending some time with Mobile IE and Opera 10, I'm starting to realize why people say Safari on iPhone is THE mobile browser. It simply supports more web protocols than anything else right now (and before people start shouting Skyfire, yes, I'm going to be trying that out soon). GPS on Google Maps was pretty spotty too, it hard a real hard time getting a lock from my room window which faces the open street.
That's when it dawned on me, I should probably flash a new radio. On the Raph radio thread the pole already stated that I had the most popular radio. But the newer radios were not listed and further reading revealed that 1.12.25.19 was getting good reviews from North American users. So off I go to flash the new radio, as simple as flashing the ROM pretty much. And wow, what a difference in GPS performance. Google Maps locks in a couple seconds, TomTom locks quickly (especially if I launch Google Maps first, I'll talk about TomTom and Garmin more in another post). Battery life shot up too, 2-3 days w/o charging on an older battery is pretty good (my M600i I had to charge everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.
Next time, importing my contacts from a non windows mobile phone but NOT using Outlook in between.
http://wmpoweruser.com/almost-50000-people-have-been-smokedbywindowsphone/
There have been almost 50000 people that were smoked by windows phone and the stakes are now a 1000$ gift card for the winner. I say that someone creates a custom ROM that can combat all the challenges in "smoked by windows phone" so we can start winning 1k dollars easily!
Typically, the smoked by windows phone challenges involve turning off the device completely and then turning it on and doing something. Some HTC devices (inc2, incs, a few more) have a feature called "fastboot" (not to be confused with fastboot that's included with adb) on the stock rom, that allows it to boot in like 3 seconds. Makes more sense to use stock rom, turn off lockscreen and add stuff like weather widgets, as the challenge often involves finding out the weather.
They'd probably have some issue with that, I remember reading about how someone with a Gnex won fair and square yet were still told they lost. IIRC the decision got reversed later after it went public, but it still shows how unfair this challenge is.
All the tests are hand picked for functions that Windows Phone is quick at and somehow that makes it better. The Metro UI they are using works for large screens like the Xbox 360 on a tv, but on a phone it just wastes screen space.

I read about that too. He needed weather from 2 different states, but they never told him that until he lost the challenge. Totally unfair.
No, Microsoft gave him the laptop, they had a big apology. The challenges are who can take a picture to fb then upload(stock ics can beat it), find a four star restaurant(yelp if your fast enough) and weather in two cities(disable lock screen and two widgets). I am going to go tomorrow and try to win this thing, wish me the best of luck with my old Samsung vibrant running stock ics 4.0.3. If I win either I am gonna get the Samsung series 7 tablet or an HTC one x.

I have never heard of turning the phone on and off, shoot is there anything for a Samsung vibrant that can let me boot fast?

So I have just spent the last 24 hours taking my HTC One M8 from Windows 8 Mobile all the way to the current release of Windows 10 Mobile (10.0.15254.582), and I learned a lot of cool things.
https://ibb.co/cF3P0pd
https://ibb.co/x1v4ygc
First: Windows mobile was doomed from the start, lack of developer support is clearly evident across the different releases and I can see why it never took off, this could have been great but even facebook tells me to use the mobile website how am i supposed to get my alerts from my random groups?
Second: This was a pain to do, Regedits out the wazoo, having to take all the knowledge everyone has posted and then applying it, literally just copy and pasted numbers of legitimate Nokia Lumia 950 to make it think it was a legit phone then taking the updates slowly so i dont break the damn thing since windows has an issue everything someone deletes the sys32 folder.
Third: HTC, Yall make a damn good phone if it can go all they way to the latest release and not break a sweat, then someone clearly did something right to allow this phone to last this long. (against its will)
Fourth: Profit? (probably not this took way too long and i am not writing a guide on how to do this)
I mean this device is still a pile of crap but I have discord (limited functions but eh) crunchyroll all sorts of other 3rd party out of necessity apps that cover from Facebook to YouTube, this platform could have been sooooo much more but since nobody developed for it and it died.
So my question is who else has shoved their m8 to the limit of what this OS has before Microsoft kills it?
I cant be the only one to have thought wouldn't it be great if maybe it was more use than a door stop?
Also can someone give me a functioning .apx for Opera Mini, (and possibly a walk-through) Fricking Edge is a POS.
Short story long, this weekend was supposed to be me taking the Android M8 and making it my backup phone by replacing the rom with one from linage i already had looked at and read how to, but the amazon seller I purchased it from sent me a windows version, but i already bought one to play with or turn into a overgrown hotspot since my lte ipad mini (gen 1) is a pile of crap (i have a 2018 ipad that is wifi only and i like my manga on a screen bigger than 5 inches), I am a semi driver and im gone 5 weeks then come home for 1 week, he screwed the pooch and now i have 2 windows phones so i needed a backup phone if my nice Pixel 3 was to get damaged and be NFG, so i went through all this to just get a phone that will work and have some entertainment value and well i think it could be a contender for my backup phone. So now i bought a M8 thats android but it hasnt arrived yet to my only choice was to work with the turd i have and make it shine a bit brighter. Anyway i have my m8 reg modded to allow tethering i have my ipad data only plan working flawlessly on the m8 even the website says its an m8 but isnt making me change plans, a spare sim so i can call in to get my number put on it since the store is a no go in 18 wheels of steel, it works and it works good for something it was never meant to do.
If anyone has questions i probably am the worst person to ask but hey maybe i can help (probably not but eh).
