basically all my email contacts for hotmail have disappeared (online). I know I can export all from my contacts on my phone, but there's stacks of contacts with no email address.
I've selected only the ones with email addresses as favorites, is there anyway to export only these to save editing tons of people in the csv file?
cheers
Just use MicroSoft Excel to open the csv file, you can do whatever you want.
I dont know much about this but i do know that my phone savs the fav contacts in the PIM.VOL file because thats how I transfer contacts between roms and hard flashing and fav contacts is always there intact.
ok cheers, looks like i'll have to trawl through them. at post 2, thanks but I know I can open and edit the csv, but as I say I didn't want to ho through the crap! there's litterally hundreds of contacts mixed up with around a hundred more email people.
I was just looking for a quick way to export only favorites (the emails)

after flashing bunches of times, and for some stupid reason importing contacts from the sim each time and then having it sync with google, i have 6 or 7 identical numbers under each contact.
any ideas of how i can pare 'em down to just the one?
thanks!
Go to your gmail which is here http://gmail.com.
Login and then select contacts on the left side and edit away.
ps: maybe not a good idea to import sim all the time...the first time should be enough because it with auto sync to your gmail account.
that's kinda what i've resigned myself to. i guess i was just hoping that some dev had had a similar prob and had written a quick app...
oh well...
Im not sure if anyone would spend time writing an app that does that because not many people have that problem.
I guess you could use Outlook to import the contacts and see if it detectes the duplication. Or if you do some analysis on Gmail's export format, I suppose you could use regular expression to do the job as well. As zeezee said, it probably doesn't worth it to develop an app for this.
Had the same problem a while back, easiest way i found was to login to your gmail account, export all contacts as a .csv file. Open it in excel or any spreadsheet program and delete the numbers out of all but one column for each contact. After that save the file (might want to keep a copy of the original just in case), delete all your contacts from gmail, then import your edited .csv file. Let me know if you have any questions.
If you login into gmail, amd export you contacts as a cvs, then clear all you contacts and re import the csv, google will detect the dupes, and fix it for you
For best results log into Gmail and select contacts.
Check each one of the dupes and select merge contacts.
This way you won't lose any detail in case contact 1 has the email
and contact 3 has phone number and home address.
I have to do this after a day of flashing because my MyFaves numbers
always get added back into Contacts.
Ok, I've given up trying to figure this out on my own, simply because the unfortunate keywords involved will show me Google results on just about anything other than what I need.
I want to sync my Windows contacts to Tab. Kies software does not see them. I don't have an Outlook, since Windows 7 64 bit has live mail instead. I've tried exporting contacts to VCF format, and then importing them through Kies but that didn't help either.
I also have an iPhone 3Gs that syncs to the same computer, using those same Windows contacts without a problem. Is there a way to get the contacts from iPhone?
I may be asking too much, but I'd also love to keep my contact photos that are neatly attached to many of my contacts.
This is really driving me crazy and any help would be appreciated.
Why not try exporting your contacts to CSV and then import the file into your Google address book (Contacts) online?

I don't really use Gmail. I have private server POP mail accounts and I keep my contacts on my iPhone, laptop and home PC.
Am I to get used to idea I'm gonna have to start using Google for e-mail, contacts, calendar etc.?
Use contact manager on your iphone to create a CSV and then email the file through the app to any email address you use, then on your tab log into that email account and save the CSV to your tab, then on the tab to into contacts and select import and it should find the file and loads them
that's how I did it

The problem is that CSV file doesn't pass contacts photos.

Export to VCF and import that into Google's Contacts. You don't need to really use gmail if you don't want to, but the gmail address book is the most convenient way of keeping track of your contacts. Plus you can then edit them from any PC with a web browser..
VCF (vCard) can embed images. I don't know if M$ Live Mail can write VCF with embedded images, though. But thats what you should try.
Just sync it with outlook contacts u can update with iphone and then pass to the tab. That's what in doing and when I change anything on the tab I just create a new sync so the.next sync with the.iphone will be clean and won't replace any contact.

Okay. I finally deleted all the people I don't talk to anymore from my contacts and SIM, and cleaned up by putting e-mail addresses in the contact info etc, and now want to sync that with my Gmail. Why doesn't these changes reflect on my Gmail account? I still have no contacts according to gmail, it just has an area that it has every e-mail address I have had an e-mail from or too.
The part that's frustrating is on my phone, when I go to compose a new text msg, and click contacts, I have to go through hundreds of useless e-mail addresses etc, still have 5 different names for some people that use multiple e-mail address and numbers, and a ton of "unknown" entries. I can't find a way to delete all of this other crap.
Has anybody successfully and cleanly synced all of their contacts?
Or is there a way to make it so when I hit the "contacts" button while composing a text msg, it only shows the phone numbers I have saved to the phone under contacts?
Theres too many areas called "contacts" that are completely unrelated to eachother. I wish google would wise up.
Thanks for any help!
When you make a new contact you get options to save to your phone, Google account, or sim card. You have to have them saved to Google or else they won't sync. I'd suggest opening Gmail on a computer and inputting them there.
So ALL of the work I did on the was a complete waste of time, and I have to go and indivudually put each and every name/number/email address into my Gmail contacts? Okay thats just retarded.
Next question, how do I get all of those "contacts" deleted from my phone. I really dont want to look at 500+ email address of companies/spam/notifications when I just want to look through my contacts to add to a text message.

In contacts, go into display options and check the box that says only contacts with phone numbers
Yea that helps when I go into contacts. My problem is that when you go into compose new text msg, then want to add a list of people and you click contacts, it lists the 500+ e-mail address I may have emailed out before, as well as up to 5 seperate entries for people with the same name, and doesn't show if it is for one of their e-mail addresses or one of their phone numbers.
This contacts sync thing is just outright stupid.
Solution I found for this do a factory wipe. Then when phone reboots add an exchange account. Use your google login info. Choose manual setup. Under server put m.google.com tell it to sync contacts. You must first make sure to configure google contacts to only sync groups you want. Do this within gmail on your computer. When you then add your google account uncheck sync contacts.

You don't have to delete anything! You can export your contacts on your phone to a vcf file.
contacts > import/export > export to sd card
Once you have the vcf file, you can e-mail it to your gmail account, then download the file to your pc. Next, import it to your gmail account. Let me know if that works.

go into your gmail contacts on a computer...create a new group called "My Contacts". copy all of the contacts to there that you actually want to see. within your phone contacts setting, set it to only sync that contacts group from gmail.

on eclair, yes... on froyo, no.
the workaround in eclair is to set up a second gmail account, then use a service like soocial.com. in your real gmail account, set up the my contacts list. set up soocial to sync the "my contacts" list with the entire list on the 2nd account. then, on your android phone, don't sync contacts from the primary gmail.. only sync contacts from the 2nd gmail account.
I have a (probably) related problem. When I entered a new contact in 2.1 I was given the option to choose saving to phone, google, or sim card. Now that I have updated to the official Froyo version, I never get this option. It just saves to my phone. This is a serious problem. Is this just my phone or are others having this problem?
thanks.
I NEVER save to the sim card because it does not use the same format I use in Outlook and it will split a contact with more than 1 phone number into several contacts.
The AOSP Mms.apk has the option to hide non-mobile phone numbers and emails.
I am using fission 2.4.3 ROM and i like the way it looks and all but is there a way to edit the Facebook syncd contacts like the factory Global contact list settings? it says facebook contact information is no editable on this device... am i missing soemthing? before the root and rom i syncd my contacts and was able to add numbers, emails and drag them onto the home tabs for shortcuts..
Welcome to the CLOUD!
Doesn't seem like such a great idea now does it? LOL
Here is what you do, it will require having or making a Yahoo Mail account but it will solve your problem.
If you use Outlook (like I do) it will be way more complicated but only because you probably want to use Outlook as your master list.
Step One - Go to Yahoo mail and import your facebook contacts into your yahoo mail contacts. (they have a wizard that does this for you) Then export Yahoo Mail Contacts to a CSV file. (This will work for myspace and linkedIn as well!)
Step Two (Google) - Import that CSV file into Google contacts and have your phone sync if it doesn't automatically (sometimes it takes awhile to sync)
Step Three - Look in your phone contacts you will now see dupliacte contacts of all your facebook friends. One will be from Google and the other will be from facebook. Select the facebook contact and JOIN or LINK (depends on your rom) it to the other duplicate.
You will now be able to edit all the fields not filled in by Facebook and a have a single contact for that person. (If you look you will see in the contact which profiles are linked together. You will have one profile for each contact source that has been linked. (one for Google and one for Facebook)
If you have Fission running you need to go into EDIT contact before you will get the JOIN button in the menu.
I have found that it is best to do most of your editing in Google Mail and then syncing anything else (such as outlook) to that (I use Companion Link).
And while it is ok to add contacts into outlook and sync with Gmail it is better to check those contacts for correctness in Gmail.
If they are correct in Gmail they are correct on the phone. And should you ever have to factory wipe data you will be sure to get all your contacts back when you resign into GMail on your phone.
How can I transfer the contacts from WM 6 to Windows Phone?
A quick search found the Outlook method, but I don't use Outlook and I don't have the app. Another way is copying each contact to SIM and then transfering but that is very time consuming.
Any other ways?
At least in Nokia there is a Contact Transfer application in the application menu. This works like a charm.
I don't think ActiveSync has that option.
You can transfer all your contacts to "cloud" from google: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299. On WP7 device add this account like exchange serwer and done. But you have to remember:
10. Check Contacts, Calendar, or Email, depending on which you'd like to sync. (Tasks is not supported and will lead to an error if checked.)

Here is what I did.
Saved contacts as cbf file to my PC and imported in my Google Mail account.
Now, I synced WP7 with the Gmail account. The contacts are there in the list with the numbers and I cannot call. There's no option or button for that.
EDIT: Now I checked the contacts in my Gmail account. The First, Middle and Last name are fine but the numbers are saved as notes, like
Mobile: **********
FileAs: First, Last name
I think, I got a fix for this.
If anyone any export any 1 or 2 contacts from their Gmail account which must have mobile tel, and preferrably work tel, home tel and email also and send the file to me.
You can replace the numbers by 00 or anything. Export in CSV file.
I just need the 'Fields' the gmail uses for numbers.
I am using imobiletool contacts.
