I can finally upgrade my diamond 2 to WM 6.5 through the HTC site but they said everything will be deleted after the upgrade.
I was wondering if my games from 6.1 will still work in 6.5, hate to lose my high scores in bejewel 2. Is there a way to save the "saved data" from the game? Since everything is installed in my sd card, does that make a difference?
bejeweled 2 saved data is in your Main memory:
\My Documents\My Saved Games\Bejeweled 2

This is for all you guys/gals with experience in using storage cards.
I have bought a 1 gig SD card and am planning to do a hard reset and reinstall everything... and move all apps (that can go to SD) to SD. Based on discussions, I know not to put today plugins (Spb Plus, Pocket Breeze, Wisbar and Weather Panel) and PIM apps (pocket informant) in SD so they will remain in Main Memory.
Now I have some more questions. Please bear with me, I'mnot a new PPC user but I'm new at relying so heavily on the storage card.
- Are there any special strategies for deciding what goes where (what kind of programs not to put on the SD? PIM databases? ListPro, Flexwallet etc. Any best practises?
- Spb Pocket Plus will be in main memory but I am also using Spb GPRS Mnitor, Spb Finance and Spb Weather. If I plan to integrate these apps int the Spb Plus today plugin via the new tabs featuer. Do I have to install all these apps into Main Memory as well? Because I was planning to put these onto SD as well.
- I use a finance application (Spb Finance , MS Money or Pocket Quicken, havent decided which one) very ferquently on my PPC. Should I put this app in SD or main mem. Does it make a difference? It has its own DB with financial info and as I understand read/write speeds might be an issue in SD?
- How does synchronization work with most of the Apps and Data on the SD? say PIM information (notes, tasks etc.) or Flexwallet wallet or Listpro database or finanace application DB etc?
- How do I back up the SD card? Active Sync doesnt do it. I havent checked if Sprite back up does it. Is there a special category of apps that do this or will sprite or activesync do? Does a backup just consist of copying over the contents of the SD to a folder on the desktop or is there more to it? Any special strategies here?
- Since I have space now, i plan to put lots of music and some video clips on my SD card. I remember reading once that if you copy a file over a certain size via file explorer to the SD in the PPC, you can get errors and its better to get a card reader. What kind of file sizes are we talking about? is it only related to file sizes or the number of files transferred is also affected? How critical is it for me to buy a card reader?
Any helpful advice/experiences will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Guys,
I have a question..
How can i know what programs i should install to my stoarge memory, and which to install to my main memory? And whats the difference?
Im guessing that i would install important programs direct to main memory right? But because of limited space this can be tough. Heres a list of programs i use. Could someone please advise me which to install to Main memory and which to install to a storage card for max perfromance:
Skype
Netfront 3.3
Opera
Agile Messenger
MemMaid
Resco Explorer
TCPMP
Broken Sword (Game)
XCPU Scalar
Thanks for the help guys!
Which device do you have?
If it's a Windows Mobile 5 device, the performance between internal or memory card is minimal. If it's 2003se or older, then performance from memory will be far higher.
Rule of thumb for me is, what couldn't I do without if the memory card popped out and got lost. I put those apps internally.
Also something to consider (on a WM5 device) is that flash memory can only be written to a finite amout of times, so if you have an app that constantly rewrites data (such as NetFront with the cache) then I would stick that on a memory card. It's cheaper to replace a worn out card in 2 years than the whole device. Although I imagine most people on here replace their device within a year to 18 months anyway.
I have a Blue Angel with WM5 and I did a Registry Hack to use my SD Card as "My Documents" (not in a subfolder!).
Now, when I open a programm like TomeRaider or Word, in the file list I see every file twice. I think the system looks at"My Documents and Storage Card separately, despite the renaming. Does anybody know how to fix it?
The difficulty in working with files and directories on Pocket PCs has bugged me since their inception. I am hoping that WM6 will improve on that. We'll see.
In the meantime I've found that if I create a My Documents folder on my Storage Card I can get WM5 to at least see inside the storage card, and also one directory under My Documents there. I hope that helps, but it's really not a good answer. It won't get any better until windows mobile and the pocket apps are improved enough to allow them to read the filesystem to a greater depth.
It is really hard to understand how M$ has continued to sell and profit from such a sub-par solution that could likely be so easily fixed. Especially on devices that commonly utilize gigabytes of storage in today's working world.
What should I be storing on my storage card? I got a 4 gig for my XV6800 and moved all of my photos, music and games over to it. Should I be running programs from there as well to free up the device memory? This brings up another question, I have the HTC Album installed and I can only look at photos stored on the device, but I tried the Folder Option plugin before and it woud just freeze up the system. Thanks for any help!
sd is slower then main memory and some programs dont like to be run from there mainly today item and other programs which run all the time and act up if the sd card is removed
Hi All,
Was looking for a bit of advice.
I've just installed Office Mobile 6.1 update from Microsoft on my Artemis running WM6 - Works a treat
The installation gave me the option of Main Memory / Storage Card, so I chose Storage Card. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can delete the original office files from the Main Memory \Windows directory, and if I do delete them, will they re-appear on a hard reset?
Many Thanks
