Hi, I've been using WM based phones for going on 3 years now, and lurking here for a good year or so.
My current phone/device is an Athena, which is a great internet device, but even with a bluetooth headset I've not found it to be a very good phone. I'm coming up on the end of my contract and have the opportunity to switch carriers, get a new handset, or wait.
My question now is really, whether jumping ship to the iPhone is worth while (I'd miss Opera and I've never got on with iTunes, but the visual voicemail and easy conf calling look really slick).
Alternatively I could hang on for an Android phone, but I'd wondering if it might be better to give them a year to two to develop a good software stack first..
Then there's WM7, but I gather thats not for at least another year, possibly more.
What is the concensus out there at the moment? Switch to a 'jesus phone', or wait a bit longer?
Thoughts much appreciated.

well athena isn't an ordinary phone so i'd try something smaller,more compact
iphone has several phone functions,but that's it nothing more
and for android...let's wait for it,for android itself and for apps
so, I am eligible for an upgrade on my contract August 16th and I currently have an iPhone first generation unlocked... I have a fake apn/3G/edge blocker on it because of the data plan and I don't want to get the iPhone 3GS because of the extra 30$ a month for the iphone, wifi is just fine. I heard a lot of bad things about the winmo OS but, after looking through these forums and seeing all the mods is it worth getting the FUZE? I was also interested in an unlocked HTC G1, but the only thing that turns me off with the G1 is the size....i like a physical keyboard(FUZE) and is small unlike the G1.... thanks for reading
thing about the fuze and windows mobile is that you need to invest some time customizing the phone to what you want... i got my fuze for around a week now(had windows mobile devices before, so not a stranger to flashing roms and tweaking)....
i'd say you need to spend at least a week figuring out WinMo, what rom to flash and what settings you want... then you can backup the settings and do whatever you want...
if you don't want to spend time, go back to Apple, 'dumbphones' or android...
The upsides and downsides about Windows Mobile are pretty much that it feels like a computer- you can spend a lot of time customizing it to get it to do exactly what you want.
The Fuze is a great device, I've really been enjoying mine. I wouldn't recommend an iPhone unless you're specifically looking for it- it has it's own niche role; it's neither computer-phone nor regular phone; but more of an iPod with a phone and a few nice apps.
Do not buy the FUZE as it is about 8 months old now. Its successor should be available before the end of the year.
HTC RHODIUM, simply the best.
thanks for the responses... I am between semesters so I will have like 3 weeks to play with the phone until my semester starts up again.
also, i looked up the RHODIUM, isnt that coming out for Sprint? I googled it otherwise just a CDMA phone.

they are the HTC codenames= brand names for the phones... carriers may brand them differently... should be able to find Rhodium GSM(AT&T or tmobile) versions in US..

Expect either the Touch Pro2 or Diamond2 to be hitting AT&T in November. If your'e really serious about purchasing a winmo device I would wait for those. Both those devices will be receiving an upgrade to 6.5, the Fuze however will not be getting an (official) upgrade.
ah i see. well, like I said my upgrade isnt eligble till August 16 so hopefully there will be more info by then on the touch pro 2/fortress.... but I am definitely interested in the htc phone fuze or fortress/rhodium...no more iphone. i never paied for the iphone I have now because I did a friend a huge favor and he gave me it since he upgraded to a 3G. it has a crack in it but is bearable. I notice the crack is getting worse thou. and i dont want to get a no contract iphone for $800....
I went to the sprint kiosk at the mall today and looked at the touch pro (i couldnt at ATT cuz its gsm and no sim). I also went to the tmobile kiosk and looked at the dream. i was really impressed with the dream, its a nice lookin phone and works well. the touch pro, well I am glad I went to see it in person. It is a nice lookin phone, but I was not completely satisfied with the winmo. I am torn between the two. I may end up getting an unlocked dream and unlock it and get a data plan temporarily to unlock it. well, I am still deciding what I want to do. little more research time...
I know that the Leo has a better processor. Unfortunately I am on verizon and I am in need of a new phone. The touch pro2 seems like an amazing phone but I am worried about how future proof it will be. From what I read up on, the touch pro2 is supposed to be short lived. So I must ask, does anyone think there will be a time in the next year when the touch pro2 wont be able to handle something from the leo or any other snapdragon/tegra device? I know it wont handle it as well, but what are the possibilities of it not handling the program at all? Of course, this is purely speculation, but I just want to see what your opinions are.

Get an HTC TOUCH HD2 mate !!

He's on a US CDMA carrier. Chances are if the HD2 does make it to the US, it'll be 2-3 months before an unlocked US GSM version with American bands, and another 1-2 months before any carriers (CDMA or GSM) pick it up. So... if a phone needs to be purchased any time soon, the HD2 is out of the question.
As for your question, do I think the TP2 will be short lived? Maybe, I think the HD2 is what HTC hopes to be the last hurrah before WM7. If you look at the roadmap that was leaked a while ago for this year, the only device that has not been released yet is the Athena replacement. I don't know if the original Athena was released on VZ, but the Athena replacement is the last phone to be on HTC's leak from earlier this year.
Touch pro 2 does not meet the minimum requirements of Windows Phone 7 but that does not mean that it won't be a phone that lasts. People are still using Hermes phones today. The Qualcomm 7200 processesors in the HD, Diamond 2 and Touch pro 2 will still likly be comparable to other Windows Phone 6.5 devices.
If you dream about having a Windows Phone 7 device when it comes out then hold out the TP2 may not be able to support it. If 6.5 is good enough for you then it's a great phone.
Thanks for the replies guys. My phone just bit the dust so I am really looking into what I can use for awhile. I looked up the leaked windows mobile 7 requirments and am sad to see that the tp2 wont meet that. But, then again, nothing out now or coming out soon will meet that. Hopefully some of these smart rom makers will be able to get us wm7 when we dont meet those requirements.
So basically its either grab the tp2 or wait for the motorola droid. I am not sure how impressed I am with android though. From what we have seen from the droid, it looks good. But I have not been impressed by the past android devices. What do you all think, both on the chance winmo 7 will run on current devices and the choice between the tp2 and droid?
Hmm well I think your choices are fairly limited if you want a new phone now. The TP2 is the same old slow **** we are used to from HTC for years. It will simply not compare to a phone with a modern chipset. Now, I don't have an HD2 yet (though it has been ordered) but I have played with TG01 which - though sometimes also laggy - completely blows the TP2 out of the water.
Not just the TG01 either. The Samsung Omnia II, Omnia Pro, and Armani 2 also completely blow the TP2 away. In fact, I have two TP2's and they have been gathering dust with virtually no use, in favor of the Samsung's, because the TP2 is just so godawfully slow.
The TP2 is in no way future-proof, it will not be able to keep up with your granny, and you will enjoy it a lot less than you might hope. It's a shameful display, scrap metal.
Then again, as I recall the better devices are not available in the US, so you're pretty much stuck with it... but believe me you're not getting your monies worth from it.
As for WM7, the rumor is the kernel testing device is an i780, which cannot keep up with even the TP2. So it's probably technically possible with some hacking to run WM7 on the thing. As for future apps not being able to run, it's quite possible for a handful of apps, though I would not call it likely until we hit WM7.

Yea I am definitely stuck in the US. Plus I want a hardware keyboard. So that takes out a lot of them. From a strictly verizon bound device, what would you recommend chainfire?
Also, thanks for the info on the i780. Thats something that brightened up my outlook on winmo7.
Side note: I played around with the tp2 and liked it and thought it was pretty fast. But this is coming from a guy who hasn't been able to touch a device with modern chipsets.

I think with your requirements the TP2 is pretty much the only "choice" you have, though I am not intimate with what Verizon has on offer.
The question (for you - and only you can answer this) is, do you want to spend the ****load of money the TP2 will cost you on a device like the TP2 ? Perhaps you would be better off bridging the period until HD2+kb release with a dumbphone, or whatever. That's a personal thing, I don't know how the contract structure works with Verizon, how much it'll cost you, what you have to spend, how long you will be stuck with it, etc. And then, it is matter of how heavily those different parts of the equation weigh for you.
You just need to be aware of what you are buying - if you are, and are happy with it, great.
The new rumor is that the HD 2 cdma, the HTC Passion, will soon be in Verizon stores powered by Android 2.0
It may be time to wait , at least a little while longer.

Hmmmm. I am going to have to look this over more. I hope an hd2+kb comes out soon, but I think that would be 6months or so (especially in the US) before we ever see that coming about. Ideally, I would want to go with a phone that you mentioned thats better than the tp2. Perhaps in a year we may see some of those hit verizon or others with 7 already installed on them. Speculation is killing me as I want to wait it out, but don't know how long I can last. I use my phone pretty heavily for business purposes. Given htc's track record, when would you predict an hd2+kb would be out?

As we have seen and heard all about the new HTC HD2, most of us really like this phone or love this phone. We want this phone for our own likes. Some like it for the looks, some like it just because it is the latest and greatest, some like it but want it to have a keyboard, and there are the ones that agree with all these reasons and more. Another issue is that I very seriously doubt that emails left with some Sprint exec are going to convince HTC to build the HTC NON-AMATEUR HD-12 or whatever it is you want them to invent.

What you don't realize is that we can talk to these people and if enough of us do that, then they will talk to the manufacture in responce to the mass requests from the customers "US" who are the reason for them to have their jobs and also to justify their positions.
Anyone that has an opinion about this matter wether positive or negitive is entitled to let that be heard. So, everyone please post your opinion here. If you agree with me, then just send an E-Mail to [email protected] and also let him know what you think. The people who disagree, you can also send an E-Mail and explain why you don't want that phone.

What you don't seem to realize, besides the fact that spelling things correctly is likely to make a better impression upon those executives you're trying to convince, are several factors:
- There is no evidence that Sprint has ever really listened to their user base irrespective of how vociferous or well-grounded their howls of protest may be. See, for example, the 21,352 threads about Windows Mobile 6.5 on the Touch Pro 2. Other examples include many months of disabled GPS on the Mogul, and so on.
- An executive who gets even several hundred emails requesting a particular extant device may very well presume that those represent a majority of everyone who wants it. They need to sell way more than that. The exec will listen to the company's research department, not emails.
- Emails demanding that one company somehow force another company to create and manufacture a device that does not currently exist are simply not going to carry any weight at all. At a level where developing a device costs millions, that's not how businesses work.
In short, I think this is, like every other internet petition, a complete and utter waste of time.
Worse, it distracts from current real issues with the phones we actually have in our hands. I'm not personally convinced that, for example, a letter-writing campaign about the broken Bluetooth on the Touch Pro 2, will do any good at all. However, it's a real problem with a real device for which we've paid real money and which has real consequences for for the day-to-day usability of the devices. Some would argue that it violates the implied contract of usability ("it has Bluetooth!") made when we bought the phones, since many people are unable to hang up through Bluetooth, obviating any real utility to the feature.
Any energy devoted to writing emails to Sprint execs would be better-spent asking them to live up to their obligations with respect to devices they're currently selling rather than non-existent devices that, based on past experience, they'll break and never fix in the future.
The sucessor to MY Touch Pro 2 must have Windows Mobile 7 out of the box and the speed to run it.

I've owned the Motorola Select 2000e (literally the size of a brick), Motorola Timeport, Motorola Rizr z3, HTC Herald (Wing), HTC Touch Pro 2. Don't think I didn't want the devices in between them, but I agree, I'm eyeballing the HTC HD2 with double the horsepower of the Touch Pro 2 and God knows what the folks here on XDA will dream up for it but at some point you have to jump in with both feet and accept the reality like buying a PC the moment you do, your device is an instant relic. We also have to face the reality that whether contract, no contract and/or unlocked it won't be cheap. Yes, T-Mobile reduced the price of the TP2 from $349.99 to $269.99 to pave the way for the HD2 but at what cost. At what cost to any device as we move forward?
I have screen protectors, "Body Gloves" and 8GB memory cards; if I can't sell my devices in mint condition on eBay or Craigslist for what I paid for my devices I'll cry!!! I can sell my TP2 for $300; good luck selling my Dell Axim for even a $100.
Okay, the Snapdragon is twice as fast as my device, but what does that mean; twice as fast at what; opening my emails or my programs? I play Chess; now the day they make a program which I can give voice commands and type a document "vocally" as fast I type on a keyboard; then let's talk! Until then, I pout at what might have been.
I'm glad to see that there are both sides of this issue being discussed. I had also originally started out with a brick for a phone and had went smaller and smaller until the idea of using the phone for more than just making phone calls. I had the original HTC TOUCH and was happy with it for a while. I had quickly got very tired of using the onscreen keyboard, and wished that I could get a keyboard. I started looking for a new phone. The HTC TOUCH PRO was what I was going to get for an upgrade, so while I was waiting for the date that I could upgrade my phone I had found the HTC TOUCH PRO2 and really loved what I saw. At the time when I saw this, it was not even released from HTC anywhere. What I saw was leaked to the internet. there were people who also did not believe that would make it's way to market, but here it is. While waiting for my upgrade date, I had upgraded my wifes phone to the HTC TOUCH PRO. She was totally against that, but I did that for her anyway. Now she just loves it and can not live without having a keyboard on her phone. I told ter that I was going to upgrade my HTC TOUCH and she was not too happy with that, but once she had gotten used to her new phone, she was not against that idea except for one thing, the price. I told her that she did not have to worry since I would pay for it all from my side money, so then she was in agreement. My HTC TOUCH had quite a few problems with freezing and random rebooting, and some times I had to pull the battery to reboot it when it froze up. Then I had to have it replaced because it would not stop a continous loop of starting and shutting down, even if I had tried to do a hard reset. The second replacement would also do random reboots, but only once in a while no matter what, wether I was online or on a call. I was happy with getting rid of that phone. The very first day that the HTC TOUCH PRO2 became available from SPRINT, I had called and ordered it. I still have the original ROM on my phone and I have n
I still have the original ROM on my phone from SPRINT and I have not had the problems that most people are complaining about. I have downloaded some things to my phone to tweak it a little and to add eye candy. I use everything on my phone that it came with and what I downloaded except for 2 things, SPRINT TV & SPRINT MUSIC. I have no need for either of them at all. I download music and video's to my 16GB card and I stream video to my phone from my SLING BOX PRO. On average I stream anywhere between 10GB & 15GB of data every month. There are some things that I can not stand that ALL of the US carriers had requested from HTC. They had all requested that there be no FRONT FACING CAMERA, and that the FM RADIO be either disabled in the GSM modles and when the ROM for the CDMA models be written, that they wish for it to be excluded. They had ALL did this, so they can later SELL us their CRAP that we should have gotten just like the EUROPIAN & ASIAN models got right out of the box. According to HTC, they said that the carriers customers did NOT want those features. We know that is a load of crap. So, as I say LET'S STAND UP AND TELL AND DEMAND WHAT WE WANT! We don't have to just sit back and wait for whatever just happens to come our way. So, who ever your carrier is wether it be AT&T, SPRINT, T-MOBILE, or VERIZON, call them and speak up and be heard. If enough of us do just this, they will listen. That's why the HTC HD2 will be coming to the US and to T-Mobile first, because enough of us spoke up loud enough for us to be heard. TMO exclusive in the US.
Perhaps I'm being naive, but I was thinking of starting a petition or something regarding the standard two year contract cell phone company's require in order to get a discount on new equipment.
What gave me the idea is, my brother got an HTC MyTouch with Android 1.6 about a year ago, and I recently got an EVO running 2.2. I've started to notice a high percentage of apps I recommend to him turn out to only run on 2.1 and higher.
He is not eligible for a discounted upgrade until July. Seem's to me if these companies are going to lock us in, they should guarantee that they will update the phone's OS for the same amount of time, assuming updates exist.
I realize most people will think, "good luck with that", and for good reason. Some people might not upgrade if their current phones are up to date.
I understand when you buy a new computer, you don't get a free upgrade to the next version of the OS. But you also don't get locked into a two year contract!
But this seems along the same lines as being charged 20 cents for each text. Actually, worse, since you can choose to not use text messaging. This seems even more of an issue now that they've increased their ETF's.

If you pay for internet service and get a free netbook they do not promise additional updates or anything of that nature and the same goes for phones. A company like HTC may not be able to handle the workload of their smaller entry level phones when they are now putting real phones on the market. if you want your mytouch updated root the phone. simple and its not like those things are even worth selling anymore anyway.
If you buy a netbook it's yours, you aren't required to sign two years of your life away. And it's not HTC who's requiring you to sign, it's the cell providers.
If you're happy with no updates, fine. At least Sprint seems to believe there are people who feel as I do, they give you a discount after only one year.
I don't think it's too much to ask for. Once they make the decision not to provide OS updates, they should offer a discounted new phone, or let you out of your contract.

Can't really compare that... you don't need to void the netbook's warranty to upgrade the OS.

When did T-Mobile decided not to update the phone? Or better yet, when did T-Mobile announce that they will not be updating that particular phone? Great things come to those with patience.

and if you buy the phone you're not required to sign a two year contract either- you CHOOSE the two year contract in order to have the carrier chip in to the purchase price.

I stand corrected. Buy the phone at a "discount", sign up for two years at $2160 (at least), and don't complain that we aren't going to provide OS updates for the same two years.
Generations X and Y, meet generation bend over.
Its also not always the carrier who isnt updating. Its the manufacturer of the phone. It is HTC, Motorola and Samsung that first have to make the upgrade work with whatever interface and hardware they have on there phones then the carrier can upgrade their stuff. After so long its just not worth working on those older phones because they are having breakthroughs on the newer ones. The market is expanding rapidly right now and theres going to be a lot of models left in the dust. Just my opinion.
