The cyanagen instructions indicate to choose the "apply any zip from sd" however i do not have that option. I can Reboot, Apply Update.zip, and wipe.
Please advise
that means your not running cy1.4 recovery, or anon's 1.2.3 recovery. rename the rom to update.zip, and then flash as normal through recovery.
please next time post this to Q&A section.

Select "install zip from sdcard".

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
that is the exact guide i am following, but i am having the problem i described above. within CWM i am unable to load the kernal.
When yo ugo into recovery mode what color is all the lettering on the screen?
Secondly after flashing CWR did you fully boot the device up before trying to flash a kernel? If so that is your problem. Reason being is if you DO NOT flash a kernel right after flashing CWR before boot the device the recovery image gets overwritten. You MUST install a custom kernel right after flashing CWR before fully booting the device up the first time.

He's right. You have to flash the kernel and rom before you boot. If your recovery is yellow your good to go. If its blue then your flashing the recovery correctly. Redownload the recovery file and try again.
hey thx works now, comes down to the first reboot. they should add that to the guide.
Great glad it got worked out for ya.
i remembered the first time i wanted to flash a kernel,i was afraid of bricking my phone.i looked everywhere i could not find a useful post for a novice then i decided to post this...
1. boot into recovery
2. scroll down to flash zip from sd card then locate the kernel you want to flash it should be a zip file then you select the it,the recovery ll ask you to confirm then you confirm it and wait.
3.when flashing is completed you go back to main menu and reboot phone.

You forgot an important step. Take the nandroid backup
im using asus zenfone 5, and i want to update my android version from kitkat to lolipop, i already have the latest update before lolipop and yet after i transferred the lolipop zip file intto my internal memory and rebooted i still dont get the push notification for android update....is there something i did wrong?
Hello,
Welcome to XDA.
There is more to it than downloading the update and putting it on internal storage. The update must be flashed and then your device will be updated. Usually, stock update.zips are flashed through stock recovery, have you tried this? Find out how to boot your device to recovery mode(volume up+power) or (volume up+home+power[if you have a hardware home button), when you get to recovery select the install update option. Youll have to find out if your zip file needs to be on internal sdcard or extsdcard. You'll have to flash it from where you have it stored when in recovery. I don't know the details of how your device is updated, all devices do it differently.
For help with getting your device updated correctly, try posting your question in the forum linked below.

I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum, please feel free to move this where it belongs. I'm in a TWRP bootloop. I followed these directions: https://twrp.me/google/googlepixel.html and now when rebooting, I'm constantly back in TWRP, it never boots into the system.
Which version of twrp and what were you trying to do?
My assumption is you didn't follow the steps carefully and now the boot is corrupt. You need to flash the boot img, just download the factory image from Google.

Maybe a fix is mentioned there.
So i just flashed Pie on my P2 and decided i would do the persistent install of TWRP so i could backup and restore easier. However, when i did, a system reboot would just take me back into TWRP. I had to reflash the factory image to fix it. I was using the latest TWRP.
Anyone have this issue or know how to get around it?
I tried the install via fastboot method (adb commands). should i just try fastbooting into TWRP then manually installing the zip file from within TWRP? Also saw one post that said to just reflash magisk after flashing TWRP and that will fix it.
Also, i noticed when you long press the back button, after a second there's some haptic feedback like its firing....something. Can this be used? would be nice to get back the long press to kill app option like custom roms have.
I am having the similar issue. I installed magisk via twrp and then I can no longer boot into the OS. It also seems to be screwing up twrp,so I also have to reflash twrp
1. you are posting in the wrong sub-forum. there is a q&a sub forum
2. report your thread, so it can be moved

reported it
so i just had the zip in my adb folder and pushed it to temp with:
adb push [twrp filename].zip /tmp
and installed it with:
adb shell twrp install /tmp/[twrp filename].zip
when i try to reboot to system it just boots right back into TWRP. I may just try what i saw someone suggest and install magisk after twrp instead of before.

cool thanks. The way i was doing it i actually found off a thread here. dont remember who posted it now though.
edit: another dumb question since i didnt see it there. to get into TWRP i just reboot into the bootloader and then go to recovery right? think thats how i remember doing it years ago when i used to mess with custom roms.

you will have to flash stock boot.img for your security patch as you might have overwritten that with previous try. Once you have stock boot.img flashed, boot into Android to see everything is working.
Once that is done,
fastboot boot twrp.img
then flash twrp zip
reboot into system.
to boot into twrp next time. boot into bootloader mode, use volume rockers and when you see recovery use power button to select.
also, you will have to flash twrp zip after every kernel and/or rom flash if you want to keep twrp.
