First of all, this is a Windows Mobile site.

New programmer (to android) and I want to learn..what's the best method to learn?

I'm a..tenured programer (think pascal) and I'm interested in getting into programming android apps. What's the best way to get started? In school they had a series of progressively harder apps for us to try to teach and reinforce concepts.
So what do you guys recommend? Also, is there any advantage to developing in linux vs windows?
Sorry if the wiki explains all off this..but it's down so I can't find out for sure...

You'll need ubuntu as an operating system to start off with....
And the cm source..
Hah, I wouldn't mind trying this out myself.
Along with a decent computer and basic terminal skills in linux.
You will also need Eclipse classic
I thought about it, but then I went to this site and decided it was beyond my skill set. Start here.
http://developer.android.com/index.html
Dude that site is for app development for rom development u need to head to this site
http://source.android.com/
Do I need to know a programming language at all? I know a little java but not enough to do anything with, I am very familiar with ubuntu and linux in general. what would I need to get started?
Thanks everyone for all your replys!

Ohh...u will need a from kitchen also....and programming language.... ummm Java is imp for starters...

Is there a certain kitchen that you would recommend or which one do I need for G2x?
Depends on what ur going to build from.......are u going to build from stock or CM sources.....according to that u should download a kitchen but I guess there is a kitchen which is very gud for the g2x...
I was planning on building from stock, and mainly just starting out with themes etc for now.
So u will need the stock source for gingerbread
Themes are a great starting point. Learning which apks control what is how it begins, learning how to manipulate how it looks turns into manipulating how it performs. Smali and Java are languages you need to be able to read at the least for the OS itself, C/C ++ knowledge would be nice for kernels. A basic knowledge of Linux is required if starting from pure source.

Team IcyBlaze

After having a conversation with a few important developers, I found out the Sidekick has a lot to do still. But we need people who are mature, intelligent, and can dedicate a little time. We already have a kick ass development team for project IcyBlaze, and are always looking for more people to come and join us on this never ending journey! Private message me for more details!
BY THE WAY FOR ANY PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ANDROID IS OPEN SOURCE, CONTINUE READING!
*We do NOT claim any work as our own, simply a modification. All source belongs to Google Inc. We're just doing within our legal limits to do what we think is best for the future of this phone. Hence forth, you cannot "kang, steal, or copy" work on an open source platform, catch my drift?
Just curious, are you guys going to work on AOSP or Cyanogen?
i tried playing with cyanogen but i am lost, i wish i knew more but im still learning, im going to be helping with the gui of the roms as well as looking into potential tweaks.
ill never make empty promises, i want you all to know where i stand and i dont claim to be a developer at all but it is my goal to learn.

Not at the moment, not until I expand upon knowledge. For right now, we're going to be picking up fixing the 4.x series of GenericGinger with our own belief, (Hewett and I) and releasing it as a spin-off. Deciding on a name, but I'm thinking IcyBlaze, it's definitely up for debate however!
i dont want to hear about kanging

Indeed. That word is quite annoying. This project is completely open source. If you feel you guys can do better, well jump right in, and do better!
Have you guys been in contact with Team Platypus? You might get alot of help from them, as Ayoteddy and sduvick have pretty much been here from the beginning. Good source to start with.

I would contact them, but they've contributed so much, and even so, they have lives. I couldn't possibly disturb them. I'm going to pick up where they left off, is all.
Nice.
JiN has been ban hammered for kanging. Scripts are not covered under the open source agreement there for he kanged. Open source or not doesnt give someone the right to steal another devs hard work. Anyone who fails to ask for permission to use my copyrighted pending scripts will be reported. All you need to do is ask. I wont say no if you ask. How hard is that. Im all for helping out the community but stealing will not be tolerated by me. Now if you guys want a real developers help then let me know.

I think we all as a community appreciate the build.prop and GPS mod you did for the SK. We do, really. But, I think you more than hammered the SK a blow to the face. If JiN1337 can't work on it now, who will?
Btw, Reactive, I don't think it has much to do with you why JiN1337 did what he did. In the post, he said Reviewers kicked him out for no reason. I remember reading it that night, and 4 hours later he made a spin-off contribution.

Let's clear something up right now.
Whilst Android is open source the rules of XDA state that if you do not have permission to use the work of somebody else then you cannot use it.
Furthermore, the Android OS is not covered by the GPL it falls under the Apache license. It is not my responsibility to educate people of these licenses so I will just say this. Follow the rules and if you don't know what you're talking about, stop talking.

[Help] I need a mentor

I know I will probably get flamed for this but please try not to, especially for the top dogs on our development teams.
I really want to learn how to develop for android, not from a kernel level but enough knowledge to port/modify a rom. I program Java plugins for Bukkit which is for Minecraft. I don't learn really well when I'm not talking to a real person. I use Eclipse to build Bukkit plugins. But I need someone to mentee me on development. I beg of you please do not flame me, if you have nothing nice to say just please refrain from posting.
If you are willing to be my mentor, please contact me I shall give you my Skype or other forms of conversation.

Not flaming or trolling or anything, but...
There are a ton of tutorials out there; for learning android development through eclipse or from the command line.
Knowing the Java programming language helps.
Git is another one of those things that will be a big help. I recommend this book.
There are open source books for the previous topics as well.
I will admit that I don't know much about android development. I suck at it. But I know the linux kernel and embedded linux development. So it's like knowing how to lay the foundation and frame a house, but learning how to finish by trial and error.
When in doubt, I search google.

Thank you, I shall try to learn from these tips you have given me. I'll ask my Java mentor if he can teach me some android too, he was the one who taught me Java.
I need your Java mentor (just started learning it myself) LOL

Bryan said it best. Use the resources that are already available. As for porting, there is no magic trick, no special recipe, it's 90% trial and error. There are some proprietary files you have to swap and knowing java and shell script is extremely important. But i will say, learning to build from source is way better than porting in most cases. Whitehawxs has give us a valuable tool on putting source code from other devices. When i get home tonight, i will pm you with more info...
