Creating a program shortcut in Win Mo 6.5? - General Topics

I updated my ROM the other day and I re-installed all my software afterwards, but one program (tomtom) didnt get placed in the start menu or in "All Programs" on the Manilla programs tab.
If I manually browse to the exe in the program files folder (on my storage card) it launches and works fine.
How can I create a shortcut in Windows Mobile 6.5 so that it shows up in my Start Menu or in the All Programs area?
I tried exploring the device while hooked up via activesync, and creating a shortcut hat way, but with windows mobile 6.5 it seems that doesnt work, the option to create a shortcut doesn't even come up in the context menu anymore. Same goes for if I browse to the file via the file explorer or total commander on the device.

Use Total Commander or Resco Explorer and create the shortcut in \Windows\Start Menu or \Windows\Start Menu\Programs(\Your Folder)

There are two ways I use to make a shortcut in Windows Mobile. The first is to find the original EXE, tap and hold on it, and select "copy". Then, go to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\, tap and hold, then "paste as shortcut".
The other, easier way is to install this valuable piece of software, restart file explorer, browse to the EXE, then tap and hold, then finally choose "Send Shortcut to Programs".

Thank you both for the info.
I was able to do it using total commander, which did have a "Create shortcut" option in the ">>>>" option of the menu. I used that and created the shortcut in the programs folder and then it showed up in the start menu and in the touchflo all programs menu.

Allthough this thread is already a few days old i still ought to thank you.
I had exactly the same issue - no TomTom anymore and i couldn't figure it out by myself so got really frustrated. No registry-manipulating worked (didn't understand how to do it right) and no manual shortcut-file creation either...
So i am really happy that you, DaveTheTytnIIGuy pointed out that FileExplorer Extension. Fantastic thing.
And Total Commander is too, actually. But i liked the extension better. Thanks anyways!
Your help is much appreciated.

Do it in File Explorer... that's work. In Total Commander doesn't...

shortcuts to cab files
need to use TC to make shortcuts--the FM ext only supports exe shortcuts.
Mine worked fine on a cooked WM6.5 on my Fuze for the remove/restorehiddenproxy cabs

Worked perfect

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Same for me! I felt like i had tried everything, and here the solution was staring me in the face (well...inside of a >>>>> folder).
Thanks!

tomtom shortcut

I have just managed to get tomtom working Ok without copying/installing all the cab files....problem is the program is on the storage card in a folder called ttnav5.21 and every time I want to run the program I have to go there and click on the exe file. should it not be somewhere else like on the start menu....yes I am a newbie to this so its probably quite straightforward.
the program called total commander is easy to make shortcuts with
if you put the shortcuts in
\windows\start menu\
they end up in your start menu
is this not a pc program?
sorted....just needed a push in the right direction.
thanks
Can't you just sync your device and then browsre the memory card/move the .exe to stat menu?
yep thats more or less what i have done ie browsed the card using PC and then create shortcut and move it to windows / start menu folder. as I said I am new to ppc having just moved from symbian phones.

Help with adding icon/link to files

OKay I know windows but mobile Windows got me....
Have files and program on a memory card, and I want to create a shortcut/link to that file ...how in the hell do I do that.
I want to be able to start my program from say the start menu and going to programs and seeing my icon there...
Is there a tool or registery hack for mobile 6 that might do this?
Thanks
Use either the built in file explorer or something like Resco file explorer,go to the file or exe. you want to make a shortcut of and click and hold your stylus on it,when you get the menu choose "copy",now go to your Windows,Start menu,Programs, scroll to the bottom of the page and click and hold your stylus, choose" create shortcut" from the dropdown menu, you have your shortcut.

How do I make shortcuts in the program folder for apps on a memory card?

Hi all.
I want to make icons in the program folder for applications that aren't installed on the device, but run off of a memory card. For instance, I run putty from the memory card, as it is a standalone .exe file. It would be easier to go to programs and launch it from there, rather than go to a file explorer, direct it to the memory card, and then click on putty.exe. Just want to save myself some time really. I know it can be done because BackupPIM does it.
Thanks for any advice.
PS I tried searching first, but it was a fairly specific thing and so I couldn't see any results. If you find any, shame me for being a noob, and point me in the right direction.
Thanks!
you go to the exe file that you wan to place in the program menu... then copy it.... then go the program folder and paste it as short cut... I dont know whether this will helps you
Shortcuts are text files with a *.lnk extension that you can place in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. RESCO Explorer can do this for you (Send to Start Menu as Shortcut) or you can do it manually as explained in the WIKI. Hope this helps.

Make sure if you do it by hand you do it plain text
Here is a tutorial.
Thanks guys that worked absolutely perfectly, just copying the file and pasting the shortcut. It's funny to think that you know so much about Windows Mobile, and then realise you don't know something so simple as this!
This will make a huge difference in my day to day life. It may even mean that my partner can now use TomTom (any more than clicking three buttons and she is annoyed, lol). This question and answer section was a great idea by someone, don't know why it didn't happen sooner.
Cheers! Keep up the good work.
Thanks
You guys are REALLY helping us noobs out allot. This worked like a charm.
One day we might have the "smarts" to do the same for others
By the way, I suggest you create a cab (you can use WinCECabManager) to have the *.lnk installed in your device so that everytime you flash a rom or hard reset you can just intall it.. I create a cab for all programs running from the storage card. one cab and i have all the shortcuts i need in my programs menu
Dear nir36
Can you explain that how we can create a cab of shortcuts the programs stored in mem card
Best regards
Get Quickcab 2.0 (hacking forum). It's pretty self explanatory to use, but when you make the cab, make sure in the name field that you name it 'mycabname.cab'. If you don't put in the extension, it doesn't work (at least not for me, lol).
The easiest way to set up the cab is to put quickcab in your c: folder, then inside that folder copy your start menu from your device. Delete all the links in the start menu you don't need, then just send the individual folders with the links into the \windows\start menu\programs directory shown in quickcab. Select 'no uninstall' so the cab doesn't go into the installed programs list. Having the named folders on your pc makes things much faster. You don't have to create the directory for the cab, and everything's organized properly. Do not create an empty folder in the cab file-this will give you an error, and a stupid command window will open, leaving you very disappointed.

Include link for App Garmin mobile XT

First, im a complete noob. i just stumbled upon this site today and already done to my phone in 3 hours than i even ever done to a phone period and i want to thank you guys.
Secondly, here is my issue. i have the GPS garmin Mobile 5.0 software for my ATT Fuze. the files for the GPS software are all on my storage card as a " all package up file " without need to install or run a cab file. so the only way i currently lauch the GPS tool in by browsing to my SD card to my garmin folder and then launching the garmin.exe. that is too tedious. i want to be able to go to my programs and see my garmin there, but even better, i want to be able to remap my PPT button to launch my GPS but i cant remapp the GPS since its not a part of my installed APPs. so my question is how do i get my GPS to appears an installed app so i can remapp it to a button on the phone?
you can use resco explorer and select the .exe file and then menu->file->send to->Start menu as Shortcut
thank you so much man. is there another app i can use thats free? the resco app is not, i did use it but its a trial software. i wanted something to keep thats free. any ideas anyone? also, i have decided to keep the Official ATT Raphael US_5.11.502.2 Rom. but I LOVE the clock in the EnergyRom 2/3. Is ther anyway i can get it and add it into my ATT official rom?
use file explorer that comes with wm. find the program tap and hold to get the context menu and hit copy, then go to windows > start menu and hit the right soft key to get a menu and go to edit > paste shortcut. rename it to garmin mobile xt if its not already named right.
Thanks Jack. But im afraid I lost you where you say " then go to windows > start menu and hit the right soft key to get a menu and go to edit > paste shortcut." what right soft key are u refering to?
the one that says menu in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Or...
While still in explorer (after copying the exe for Garmin), navigate to the Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder. Scroll to the bottom, tap and hold. The context menu that pops up will include "Paset Shortcut". Select that.
You will have an item that says "Shortcut to " and whatever the executable file's name is. You can then tap and hold on the shortcut and select "Rename" and rename it to "Garmin" or somesuch.
thats what i said... just figured it would be a little simpler to hit the softkey than find a spot they would have to find for the context menu.

Adding Igo8 (portable) shortcuut to to quick links...

Hi there kind people of this community.
I've got a portable Igo8 that is sitting in my storage card and in order to open it I have to go through the file explorer, find it and open it. Is there a way to add it to the quick links in the today screen? Again, this in not an installed version ie it doesnt have a shortcut in the start menu.
thanks for any help.
Copy the igo exe file and paste like a shortcut in Windows/start menu/programs
Thanks Alot!!!
Hello,
I'm having same problem with getting the igo8 as a standalone quick link in my windows menu. have copiedth executable file from igo8 but ont knw how to paste on HD" today creen. Kindly elaborate..
Thanks
Copy Igo8.exe or what ever the iGo executable is named that you use to start iGo then "paste shortcut" into \Windows\Start Menu\Programs. Make sure you "Paste shortcut" not just a simple "Paste" otherwise you will get a startup error.
Many thanks!! Finally got it sorted. I didnt realise it took so much time for the windows folder to load up.
Even worse, I couldn't find this link on time to say thanks!!!
Junior member for sure haha..
