UC capable and SD integrated hard drive... - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Hey guys,
I've been looking for something I had on my wizard a while back. I had something that made my SD card appear as if it was the wizard's hard drive. I remember when I would look at memory, it would show under internal memory something like 2000mb as opposed to the standard 50mb. I've searched all around and was never able to find that again.
At the same time, I was wondering if UC capable roms are not the same thing...? Anyone care to explain exactly what that means?
Thanks,
Phil

That would be WM5torage

WM5torage
Don't really think that WM5torage is what Cphil1 is looking for. WM5torage simply makes your Wizard's SD card visible as would a "pen drive" from your PC. It doesn't "tag on" the card's larger memory to the smaller internal one - which if I understand correctly, is what Cphil1 is after.
Cheers.

Well...
So far, no luck...
I still haven't found that app. I'm very disappointed that I flashed my roms without remembering that I had something like that!
Anyways, I still would like to know what is the complete definition of UC capable. Would it be a way to store program files on the storage card all the while running it from the ppc?
Phil

UC
Far as I know, and that's very limited indeed, UC stands for User-Customisable (Customised). ROMs that are UC capable auto-install a predefined set of applicatons located on one's SD. So basically, one can preconfigure the stuff one wants to have installed and "newer" ROMs would automatically read the list and install apps accordingly.
Hope that helps.

Changing time..and MINISD issue

Hey when i first upgraded to WM6 everything went smooth and the time was am pm.. now its 24 hours and i dont know how to change it back.. i was reading it somewhere but i forgot where i read it and there are to much keywords for the search so how do u change the time..? o and also when i try syncing with my Windows media player and my Storage Card(as it says on WMP) it syncs about 11 songs from like 300 that im putting in and then just stops the number varies as it when it stops but it never seems to finish.. its a 2 GB card that i got for free from a friend, maybe its cheap? i dont know, any1 else having this problem?
-thx in advance
o and what is a "Radio"? and should i upgrade?
Changing Time, etc.
Here are some instructions (courtesy of mfrazzz) on how to change the setting for the display of time:
How to not have a 24hour Clock (or how to show AM/PM)
This works on all WM6 roms
Go to Start > Settings > System > Regional Settings
Make sure you have the correct Region selected
Click on the Time tab
Click on the drop down box for Time Style
Notice the little up and down arrows? This is a scrolling region in this dropdown. Click the up arrow a couple of times and you'll find h:mm:ss tt

Concerning your miniSD card...you may have to format your miniSD card using your PC and then put back all of your music back to your miniSD. I recently formatted my card after it started giving me problems and it seems to have improved the speed of accessing the data on the card.
Check out this thread so you can start your learning about radio roms:

thx a bunch man
I had several 2GB miniSD cards, and they where all broken once to much data (more than 1GB) is stored on it. Now I just made two partitions on it (using WMStorage) and now my card still works after several months and with a lot of data.
The broken cards weren't cheap once (SanDisk), luckily I got 5 years waranty.
So my advice to anyone using large miniSD cards with this phone: make 2 partitions of 1GB on it...
search this forum for a full explanation on partitioning your card using WM5Storage
yea i think mine is broken because every time i put it in my phone it recognizes that the card is in and tells me if i want to format. i do and it says it did so successfully but it doesnt show up on my phone ..
You're better off either formatting it on your computer if you have a card reader. Also, only partition your card with WM5Storage if you continue to have problems loading more than a gig of data on a 2 gig card. Once you partition it that way, it's permanent and you can't unpartition it if you would want to in the future. I would try just formatting the card in FAT32 first and seeing if you still have problems adding data.
By the way, why do you sync music over to the card? All you have to do is copy it to the card using activesync explore. That should be way easier.
what do u mean? its the same thing. but loading it through Windows media player makes album art and everything appear on the phone so i like it =]
If album art is important to you, then by all means keep doing it that way. It doesn't seem to be working that well for you so I was just trying to help. I would still suggest trying to reformat the card in FAT32 first over partitioning the card out, but that's up to you. Another option would be a program called storagetools. You can get it here - http://www.softwinter.com/storagetools.html, and it's free for non commercial use and there a people on here that swear it's fixed problems like yours for them.
thx man its okay, i tried it today and i included the art and it came out.. so thx its much quicker too. Thx for the help guys =]

Boosting the Memory???

Hey guys,
My internal memory is low. And I'm having a popup message every 5 seconds of the day telling me my memory is critically low... It's driving me insane! I need a solution here. That's why I turn to you guys!
I would appreciate the heads up about finding more storage space. What I'm looking for all together is a program that will "trick" my htc wizard to think the sd card is actaully the internal storage memory. I want my memory to read something like this (example);
Storage
Total: 2000MB
In use: 50MB
Free: 1950MB
(Again, the total of 2000MB (2GB) is the actual SD card being read as the main memory.)
...instead of reading what usually is shown on the memory screen (below).
I am sure there is a program out there that can do this. I've seen something like that a while ago but chose not to use it since it wasn't any use to me.
Anyways, I'd really like a heads up...

doesn't work like that man... wish it did what rom are you running? whatever it is, reflash or flash something else... you are not out of memory, wm is just being stupid...
hehe it not possible to do it like that.
it's not the same as your computer, but try to convert part of your HDD to ram ( VIRTUAL MEMORY never act like real RAM ) .
the best way is to install everything on an SD card and to flash to the lightest ROM u'll find here .
WRONG!
Hey guys,
I'm telling you it exists. I've even marked it on a text file. I just don't remember what file that is... I think I got it from one of those site like freewareppc.com.
Anyways, like I said I wrote it on a text file in a computer; but which? My comp? My laptop? My girlfirend's laptop? My cousin's computer in Florida???
Heck, for the life of me I don't remember... But I will find it! When I do, I'll be waiting for appologies aside from the thank you's and financial "contributions" to have the prog! (Joking on that last one! )
Really guys, I'll be contributing something big when I DO find it!
Keep you all posted!
Phil
PS - I hope you keep ME posted if any of you find something like that...
PSS- If I remember marking it on a text file, could it have been a registry edit and not a plugin / prog? Hmmm, I wonder.

..maybe you need to think for a while...
you gave us screen, that tells, that you have almost clean, fresh booted machine.
try to see difference between STORAGE mem and STORAGE CARD.
try to measure speed difference, and overall gain ;/.
msg 'bout lack of storage MEM, while you have whole 45 mb storage MEM free is absurd.
check your hklm.init
check your startup(with startup manager(search on xda forum for that one..)),
check storage card space,
check your notifications,
try to figure out, which active(yet hidden/tsr) soft is making that "lack of space" message,
if you cannot handle software you are using...
there's no point in making storage card storage memory, anyway.
yet.
there is a little freeware called cleartemp that works just fine I had the same problem on my hermes after using this prog ended up with 20 MB of free memory I think this problem comes from installing programs that can not be completely uninstalled and just mess up ur phone
Thanks for the heads up...
Hey guys,
Thanks for the heads up on ways to free space and little progs that clear a lot of unused memory. But I am still convinced this program exists. I will find it and then I'll get my thanks!
Hey nothin, that is just an example screen. That's not my actual screen. I have less than a mb available in my storage.
And as mohen pointed out, it can be done on a computer. Shrink that technology and it'll be able to be applied to a ppc!

Yeah, I tried it. It creates another drive (like storage folder) that appears in your file manager called ramdisk. I used the reg file in the program to put the temp internet files and cookies to this drive. It works, my internet files are being stored here. We need some benchmark program to really determine if it speeds anything up.
About Ramdisk...
Hey guys,
So let me get this straight, this will actually use ram from my sd card and make it "virtual" storage memory? Or is it another program that cleans up the temp files???
Not sure if this is what I am looking for but I'm willing to give it a shot...
By the way, can anyone tell me how to install this file??? I'd really like to get it running!
Phil
Hello?
Anybody there...?
I'm still trying to figure out how to install this program. Anyone up to give me some pointers please???
Phil
what's the point to put the internet files cache on the virtual drive ?
u can put it on the SD card as well, i'm confused
Okay here's the deal...
Alright,
Now I've just about exhausted any and all resources I had to try and find this program / registry edit that turns my SD card into internal memory...
Here's my promise to the one that can find me this; 30$. The person that finds me this gets 30$. I will personally send it to you or transfer via email or maybe even paypal. I will also make a donation to this forum.
I can't stress enough how I had this on my phone back in January and after modding my phone so many times, it's gone. I'm pleading with you guys to try and find me this solution.
Phil

Relocating Pocket IE to external card?

I have an Axim X50v running the latest MagLite WM6 ROM. It's awesome, but it was running a bit slow, so I decided to try removing all my apps (saved to internal memory) and reinstalling them to my 16GB CF card. This has led to a vast and very noticeable performance improvement. However, if I open Pocket IE (again located on the device memory) it slows back to a crawl.
Is there a way to move Pocket IE to an external card so it won't have to mess up internal memory so much (also, caching pages to folders on CF cards instead of device memory). I found a guide that changed the cache path in WM2003 but the registry entry in question doesn't exist on WM6.

read my Web Browsing bible; in there, I've elaborated on this. Ina nutshell: use SKTools, MemMaid or similar apps to do the auto-relocation.
I used a registry editor to relocate the cache to:
/CF Card/Temporary Internet Files
However, it works great until you do a reset. Then, it makes a folder called "CF Card" in main memory (puts content in there) and then the actual card comes up as "CF Card2" and all the paths to apps on the CF card get messed up.
Is there anyway to just disable the cache altogether? I'm on WiFi so I'm not concerned with minimizing data transfer, just minimizing memory use. I don't browse offline either, no point to have old copies of useless pages saved to your device when navigation is broken in them.
Some advice for you, I would suggest not moving the temp files to your SD card. PIE does not do well at all when you do this. Every device I've done this on with either Scchap's Adv Config or MemMaid, it would just freeze PIE.

Agreed, there will surely be at least a performance hit, even with the fastest cards - let alone the crashes. (See my Web browser bible's benchmarks)

SD as program memory

Is possible use a part of my micro-SD on wm6 as program memory?
In a word, no.
Have a look at an SD card. There are only 8 contacts on it. It behaves as a serial disk drive as far as your phone/PPC is concerned, even though it attached to the "\Storage Card" mount point. The storage can be used by the phone but it is not directly addressable by the 32 bits of the CPU. It can only be paged in and out similar to the swap file on your PC.
Ok...
thanks for the reply
Is there any programm that allows you to use it as swap?
(Do you mean something as the virtual panging that windows do on the hard disk?)
Sorry, I think it's still no.
There is a lot of chatter on this over at
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/11/17/494177.aspx
But the prognosis does not look good.
the least you can do is install as many applications as you can on your storage card...
tho not all apps can be installed on it.
remember, that if you used any software to make a part of the SD card become program storage space you will be still experiencing the same need to move page files to the ram before it can be used by the device.. so there's actually no point in doing that.

Yes... in fact i usually try to install apps on the flash memory... but lots need to be situated on the main memory... and the hermes don't has much of it...
Thanks a lot for the reply
(ps... sorry I'm not english and i could have written same/lots of mistakes..)
unfortunately ram isn't expandable on pdas..
again, the best you can do is install as many apps as you can on your storage card.

[Q] Identify where programs installed to (i.e Main Storage or Storage Card)

Hi all,
sorry if this has been posted already. looked around on google etc but to no avail.
i seem to be always running low on Storage space for installed programs on the internal memory. plenty left on storage card which is fine for installing games and other apps.
however for screen mods and themes etc i.e BSB tweaks, CHT etc. I always install on the phone memory, which is now running very low.
ive tried removing all cabs no longer in use or used rarley and still have little memory, plenty of spare memory under program but not in storage (on main memory)
so im looking for an alternative to the standard 'remove programs' function which will identify what cabs are installed to the internal memory and what is installed to memory card.
or alternativly a way or transfering some of the internal program storage over to the main storage.
this will save me having to do a hard re set to restore all storage space and re install cabs again etc.
im running standard WWE 1.48.405.2 Vodafone ROM, Radio 2.05.51.05_2 on WM6.5, HD2, any help is much appreciated, thanks, Batez
use pocket mechanic to transfer applications (which phone mechanic is able to transfer) from main memory to the storage card. This app is not free though but works a treat. Not sure if there are any free apps out there which can do something similar.
Thanks Mate
