Visual Voicemail app, problems! Help! - General Questions and Answers

This issue is concerning the G1 phone.
I recently downloaded an app named, Visual VoiceMail. Its supposed to be somekind of interactive list of all the voicemail I recieve, where I can interact and organize by hand on touch screen compared to calling my voicemail and deleting or saving any of my messages by touchtone.
In order for this app to work I must fill out a free registration form that includes my telephone number.
My issue is, Im not sure if they want the telephone number of my phone (I assume they do) or my voicemail telephone number. Neither phone numbers worked.
I cant figure out why either of these numbers wont work for the registration. Every time I enter in a number and try to sumbit I recieve a notice that says, "!! Registration Failed, Unable to determine this devices phone number."
I went to settings, about phone, my phone number. There was no number listed under 'my phone number' and i dont know why that is.
If anyone has any information on how i can make this app work, or how to fix the status of 'my phone number' so it does have an actual phone number (at this moment there isnt an option to edit 'my phone number') it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

T-Mobile UK Users - Important Information re Voicemail Issue

Anyone using, or planning to use, the HTC Touch Cruise on the UK T-Mobile network will very probably need to do a special setup on their device to get voicemail access working properly.
The symptom is that your callers will be able to leave you voicemail messages but you will not be able to pick them up from your phone. When you get a voicemail message you will get the notification but when you press the soft key to access voicemail it will dial the number but you will then get an error message saying "access to this number is barred" and the system will hang up on you.
If you try accessing voicemail by holding down the "1" key or by explicitly dialing the voicemail access number retrieved from the network (probably of the form "+44050<your mobile number minus the leading zero>" or ""+44068<your mobile number minus the leading zero>") you will get the same message. Dialing 222 will work but will also initiate a voicemail setup message each time and however many times you switch your phone on and off to reload the voicemail settings from the network it still won't work.
I just spent 2 days with the very helpful T-Mobile support to sort this out, ultimately getting escalated up two levels in the technical support group, until I got someone who recognised the problem.
The issue is simple to resolve. The problem is that the format of the voicemail access number that the T-Mobile UK network pushes down to the handset is incompatible with the HTC software on the Touch Cruise (and maybe other devices too). The thing the software doesn't like is the "+" at the beginning.
To fix it go to the Settings/Personal/Phone application and click the second tab ("Services"). Now select "Voice Mail and Text Messages" and click "Get Settings...". You should now see a screen with two access numbers populated, one for voicemail and the other for text messages. Both will probably start with "+44". The text message access number is OK so don't mess with that but the voicemail access number won't work with the UK network. Simply replace the "+" with "00" and click OK and then your voicemail should work as you expect.
I haven't tried accessing voicemail outside the UK so it is possible that the above might break your access when roaming and you might need to edit back the "+" when travelling. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has any experience with non-UK access and a "0044..." setting rather than the default "+44...", does it dial the UK access number OK?
(Actually, I never looked at the mechanics of accessing voicemail outside the UK, does it still dial the UK number or does the host network automatically push an alternate local access number to your phone when you register with the network?)

Nice on Julian. I bought an Orbit 2 on O2, but my number doesn't transfer to O2 for few days yet, so have been using my T-Mobile SIM, and also experiencing this problem.

I'm on UK T-Mob Web&Walk. Switched the +44 entry to 0044...but my TC then coundn't send texts. Switched it back and fortunately can still access voicemail as well as send texts. Strange.
I'm with T-mobile running an old T-mobile sim card on my new TC, when first called voice mail it gave me a long introduction then said "turn of your mobile off and on again to not get this messages again", I turned TC to "air plain mode" back to on mode and everything was cool from there on.
It seems that not everyone have that problem OR T-mobile has sort out that problem after Julian told them about the problem. In any case, thanks Julian to share this with us.
PS (today after reading this post is the first time that I use voice mail with my new TC)
Similar problem on WM 6.5 Asus Crystal
I had exactly this problem with T-Mobile and WM 6.5.
T-Mobile technical support was excellent, ringing back on several occasions to ensure that the problem was fixed, even though my handset is not a supported model. Once I was put through to 2nd layer support they fixed it in seconds.
In a nutshell, if you text and voice service centre numbers begin with a +44......, change them to 0044......
This did not happen on my XDA Exec WM5.0, so appears to be a new thing in WM6.5?

Sorry - I don't understand what this product does.
If Caller ID is able to display the number, it will - if it's unable to do so it will not.
How is that different from what our phones will do natively?
It seems it automagically includes information about the numbers owner, instead of just showing the name. In general, a number in itself is rarely helpful, but when you get the name behind the number also, without having it in your contact list, it's more useful.
Never tried this software, but I assume this is the way it works.
The difference is, that this will display the users name, even if they are not in your contacts list.
Right now if I call your phone it will just show up as a number, bc I am not in your phone's contact list. If I call you and you have this service, you will see my full name when I call you, based on the CID information encoded in the call.
Also it is important to note that most carriers user CID information as authentication for voicemail boxes. ie, if I use my computer to call your VM box with your phone number in the CID information, it WILL let me in to your VM box, unless you have it set to prompt for a password (In which case I would ahve to know it).
Some carriers have additional security, but I CAN ASSURE YOU that att/cingular does not have any other meaningfull security in place for voicemail.
I highly recommend putting passwords on your voicemail boxes, and set it to prompt you for the pass when you use it.

[solved] Problem with Contacts and International Country Codes

So Ive been using my HTC Ozone (6.5 Standard, 3VO rom) for a while in israel, and the way the cellular network works is as follows:
country code is +972
the number that shows up on an incoming call is 052-555-5555.
The number that shows up on an incoming text is +972-52-555-5555.
The number that shows up on an outgoing call when dialing without the country code (aka 052-555-5555) is +972-052-555-5555.
All of these differences mean that if I have a number saved in the contact manager (in only one of the above forms), it isnt displayed 2/3rds of the time. If i send a text to ME(052-555-5555), the reply comes back from an unsaved number, in a new thread is +972-52-555-5555.
Is there a way for me to just save the base number (052-555-5555), and have the phone's contact manager realize that its the same number is the +92 equivalent? My current workround is saving all the forms of a number to a contact, but 1. its tedium to go through all my contacts and do this, and 2. you can only save so many numbers to a contact, which means im screwed if the contact has two different numbers.
I see all these fields in the "current country" setting, but I have no idea what they mean, or if that is even the solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
hey , i got the same problem on my Omnia 2 with windows mobile version 6.5
The local incoming call won't show the country code, and sms does the opposite way.
check through all my phone setting, can not find any related option for this.

i just resolved my problem. hope this way can help you as well.
get a regedit software on your windows mobile phone.
go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Phone
under it, you should able to see a key name "CallIdMatch", change the value to maybe 8 or 9, which means it will match the last 8 or 9 numbers for each incoming call or sms. (use decimal) after the changing, reboot your phone.

[Q] International Dialing

Having searched this and various other forums I'll see if anyone here can help on this item. I've been using WM devices and XDA for many years and have now had to switch to a Droid 2 Global on Verizon due to work rather than choice. For over ten years I have entered my outlook contacts in the format +XX (YYY) ZZZ-ZZZZ where obviously, XX=country code.
When I dial by contact on the droid it fails and tells me the number is disconnected etc.
If I manually enter the number using this format with the "+" sign into the dialer then it switched the "+" to "011" and dials successfully.
If I create the contact on my phone and enter the "+" sign in the phone number it seems to automatically create a second number entry as "011" as well so it then dials successfully.
The odd part is several colleagues seem to be able to use their existing outlook contacts in the same format successfully.
I have tried switching on and off the assisted dialing and it doe snot seem to make any difference, calls still fail to go through.
I am using a D2G with a stock (but rooted) ROM
System 2.4.330.A956.Verizon.en.US
Android 2.2
Baseband N_01.48.05R
Apologies if I have missed something obvious, I know my way around WM but this is all new. Thanks in advance for any help.
I had a couple of issues with telephone number formats, installing the "More Locale 2" app (available on the market) seemed to fix them.
Mine was more a presentation issue though, I'm not sure if it will solve your dialer problem but it's worth a try.

Question Three Problems Setting Up My Voicemail

I'm trying to set up my voicemail and although I was successful, I did run into a few problems.
1st problem: I tested my voicemail by calling my cellphone from a landline. I was able to leave a message and I was able to hear the message when I checked my voicemail. After listening to my message, I tap the star key and then I get a message on my P7P that says "Visual voicemail isn't working" and that I should "Call voicemail to finish setting it up". What is "visual voicemail?
Furthermore the P7P states, "Saved voicemails (0)---->" even though I did save my message. If I tap the ">" that's to the right of the "Saved voicemails..." I get a "Saved Voicemails" screen that says "You don't have any voicemail messages yet." I don't know why these messages are appearing. What should I do?
2nd problem: When I'm asked to enter my password I press the Keyboard symbol but I can't see the full number pad without fiddling around with it. It does eventually appear. How do I get rid of whatever keeps blocking the full number pad?
3rd problem: How do I get rid of the little dot indication that's at 1 o'clock on my phone app icon?

Voice mail is carrier-related, not device-related. So the first question is, who is your carrier?
Second, I find it hard to believe there are people who don't know what Visual Voicemail is. That is an app that is set up through your carrier that transcribes your voice mails into text and is accessible in your dialer or the VM app itself so you don't have to call your VM, you read and manage it through the app
Here's what I do for easy access to voicemail...been doing it for years.
I create a new contact and name it AaaaVoicemail. All the A's make sure it stays at the top of the alphabetical list.
Then for the phone number I use the default voicemail number supplied by your carrier followed by TWO commas and the 4 digit passcode with NO SPACES and ending with the #.
Here is a generic non-functional example of what it looks like: 18056377356,,9999#
The commas are for a short delay between the phone number and the passcode.
One comma may be enough but I find that 2 commas works best.
Then all you have to do is call this "new" contact and it inputs your passcode for you automatically.
Or you can just bring up the phone dialer and hold the 1.
PS. If you are managing your cellphone voicemail from a landline or another phone. Michael Jordan will tell you, "Stop it, Get some help"

My carrier is Consumer Cellular.
I thought Visual Voicemail was what one used if one wanted to send a live, moving message. I didn't think that "visual" meant the voicemail would be translated into text, since the P7P has a voice-to-text option already installed.

Without editing the actual voicemail number, just follow the guys instructions - [note down or copy the original voicemail number] create a new contact and use the name 'AaVoicemail' (Aa so that the number is always at the top of your contacts list). Then enter the voicemail number followed by 2 commas and your pin/password. If you still don't have the comma option, try using Truephone Dialer and Contacts... See screenshot, it has comma option. OR, using the full keyboard in any text environment (so that commas are available) type out the number, commas and pin as you want it, then select and copy that text. Then create the new contact as described by previous guy or above and when it comes to entering the number just paste in the text you copied.
Don't think there's any other way to explain in more plain terms with every step...

But I can only see the bottom part of the keypad and I cannot find any way to get rid of the text that's covering the top part. Please see Problem #2. Any ideas?

I would argue the complete opposite. 4 providers in total offer it here in the UK, 3 MNOs and 1 MVNO. That's it.

Sure, a lot of it depends on your locality and carrier.
But, it's been around going on 20+ years now, and it is (or was, I suppose) a VERY highly requested feature, for quite some time. Many carriers in the US, or perhaps a couple, wouldn't provide the service, not for a techncal reason, but mostly because you weren't buying a phone from them.
I suspect the same is the case in the UK, to some extent?
