Ok i wanna root my g1 BAD. I want to be able to move the cache and install the development version of cupcake. but 1 BIIIIIG problem. I DO NOT have a data plan. I have read and it seems that when you root it factory resets your g1 which that means your sim card must have the data plan on it.
Is their any possible way for me to root in my circumstance?
Thanks
If you install the adp1.1 version, you can skip the login, enable wifi, then login through that.
ok umm im a mega newb to rooting and stuff lol. so can you or someone provide a COMPLETE step by step tutorial on what to do from block one? and to make sure I dont root it wrong and so i'll be able to login with wifi?
thanks lol

Sam, this forum is full of tutorials -- all you have to do is find the right one and read through it, THEN ask questions. There's a pretty steep learning curve involved, and few people have the time to hold your hand all the way, especially if you don't invest the minimal effort.
best,
the step by step is written in the sticky on how to root your g1. why would someone re write it for you? silly. go do some learning, then think about rooting your g1.
Sticky: Rooting, Hacking, and Flashing your G1/Dream
says it right in the title.
While it is possible to do what you want as far as I can see it's a considerable amount of hassle, and for it's functionality the g1 without a dataplan is like a computer minus the psu, even with wifi... so you may want to reconsider.... but as I said it can be done! Firstly what firmware do you have, are you uk or us based? The us phone let's you install a modified version of rc29 whichs you can easily bypass the registration screen (jesusfreke) has left a very helpful no dataplan sticky). The uk version has additional steps to simply roll back and install mod rc29, as it can only roll back to an earlier uk model, be rooted and then get a us image.
Give us a little more information, and don't worry I was there only a month ago, now I've installed fastboot, jf1.4, run my apps off sdcard and have replaced that stupid g1 tmobile screen. There really is a learning curve but you'll get there
well i am on US rc30 atm.
well no dataplan is fine for me really. but the memory is KILLING me. id LOVE LOVE to have root.
There have been multiple step by steps written Sam...
Like another poster stated, if your not willing to even read the introductory material on rooting your phone, it's unlikely someone will want to even help you initially.
That said, there are both numerous tutorials on how to root your phone, and how to activate the phone without a data plan so just search the forum/read the stickies for them and start on the first step yourself rather then waiting around.
Meeker
That said, the Dataplan is not necessarily a killer, but definately a cool benefit if your willing to pay the associated costs =) But personally for me, I'm a cheap bastard...

Judging from the three or four other threads he started here saying "Ack! Help!!" and the threads saying the same over on the AC, I'd say his plan to "root my g1 BAD[ly]" has succeeded.
Soo should we start waiting for the

Sorry couldn't help myself....
Over on the AC he posted that he's thinking about "installing cupcake".

You know, I lurked around and didn't want to post for a long time because I know I'm totally inept at this and I know I'm an outside/intruder here. I only posted my own question to a problem when I was unable to find a solution via search/google and puzzle the rest out myself. I wish others would do that as well to preserve the usefulness of the boards (because they are incredibly helpful!). And ultimately I hope the next person to run into my same error can find my thread via search & fix it themselves.
Sorry for being off topic, but the thread will probably be locked down anyway.

I know, I totally got baited on this one... but I think the inherent frustration for the bulk of us who got baited on this one was the fact that if you looked at the top 5 stickies on the forum.... the answers where right there... it's only the fact that the original poster never wanted to read them....
No more replies? Lets let this one die the way it deserves to?
samrozzi: You should really start using the search, but pretty much all of the information you need is in stickys. But here you go
Start with rooting your device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
--------
When ever you need to have to log in to the google accounts use this:
"to enable and configure wifi, so that the registration process can connect to the google servers. In an adb shell session, type the following command:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.settings/.Settings
This doesn't have to have root access to work. It works fine with the "shell" user that adb on non-modded phones runs as.
That command will bring up the settings page on your phone. From there, you can enable wifi and connect to your wifi network, and then proceed with registration as per normal "
Taken from: JesusFreke at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316
------------
In the end use JF RC30, or ADP V1.41
From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475381
As the link from the original/first post are V1.31 and i tried them earlier and the links do not work.
Hope that helps.
I just bought a brand new T-Mobile G1 Black from Craigslist for someone in my family. While i was rooting the phone i decided to use Haykuro SPL. As soon i rebooted the phone it bricked on me and now i am pretty much freaking out.
Does Someone Knows How To Fix It ? And do you think HTC will take it back even tho i didnt bought from T-Mobile and dont even have the receipt ?!
Please guys help me.
did you bother checking which board the phone was using? pvt or dvt? did you know some people were having issues with the new spl? and how is it bricked? won't boot? stuck at g1 screen and can't enter recovery\bootloader?
try theses instuctions and tell me if they work make sure you pull the battery before holding power and home if it get you to the recovery screen you should be good. also try it with power camera
1. pulled sd card out put it in a sdcard reader and loaded the enginering bootloader
2. took battery out
3. put sd card back into g1
4. held power + home
5. while still holding power + home slid battery back in
6. when recovery showed up hit alt+w and alt+s
7. popped sdcard back out and and loaded my favorite rom version
8. put sd card back in
9. held power + home and flashed the rom and all came alive
First off, no, HTC will not take it back (maybe if you pack 200 dollars or so with it the will). What do you mean "bricked"? Can you still get into the bootloader or not? If you can't, then sorry, it is bricked for good (atleast as far as we at XDA know)
yeah unfortunately i cant make it to the bootloader...it stays on the T-Mobile G1 sign...

The SPL loads before the G1 logo. Are you pressing back+power?
Why o people why do you not read the threads on this before you do anything. Geez. Do you not study and take precautions before you do anything?? Your most DEF screwed. If you cant get into any of the bootloader, then its bricked and no one has found a way to fix it "yet"( hopeing someone does). Please for the love of God. READ READ READ.
@futango, because people are dumb and get excited before reading, making their 2-300 dollar phone a 2-300 dollar brick. Its cool, if you saw how disastrous this forum was you would see how many topics there are on this issue, and you wouldn't have this problem. Hard lesson learned but oh well, have to deal with it until someone finds a fix, to which there isnt one now. Too bad. Next time you'll read hu? Reading is easier than spending that hard earned money....unbelieveable.
Reported.
Davil124, its seems like people are bickering again instead of trying to help you. lol.
Like what jashu said, after flashing the haykuro SPL, try holding BACK + POWER, to enter recovery mode. When in recovery mode, remove your memory card (place it in a card reader), and delete the update.zip that contains the haykuro SPL. Proceed to copy the update.zip that contains a hacked ROM (JF1.5, ADP1.5H, etc.) to your memory card. Then flash the ROM - update.zip by pressing ALT + S. This must be done after updating to the haykuro SPL (almost everyone forgets to do this, and end up looping.) Then just let it boot up (it may take a few minutes, so don't panic and pull the battery, just let it load.)

Futango is right though. If you are going to jump into a hack without reading, you get what you deserve and you deserve what you get.
EVERYTHING ON THIS FORUM IS POTENTIALLY PHONE BRICKING.
Once you fully realize that, then you will think twice about flashing whatever update.zip someone casually posts on here.
p.s. can everyone stop treating Haykuro like some kind of god? He got a hold of some HTC pre-release builds and posted em on here. That's it.

Jashsu you sound really jealous. lol jk. But I do agree with you. First jesusfreke was god, now haykuro. Isn't that blasphemy? lol.
But hopefully people will begin to realize the risks involved with flashing custom firmware. I've seriously looped at least 12 times (bad md5 checksums, faulty memory card, u name it lol), wiped over 100 times, but thankfully found solutions to every problem I've faced, but that was because I did my research before jumping the gun. I'm fully aware of all the risks involved, so all I can say to everyone is, proceed with caution.

I'm not jealous about having bricked about a dozen phones, i'll tell ya that
People should be approaching updaters with a serious heaping of caution, especially for something like the SPL. I won't blame Haykuro for not having fully tested the SPL before releasing it, but honestly he probably should have put up more than just a link and a wink (like I dunno some huge warnings and disclaimers). And for sure those links should have been pulled the moment that news of bricks came in. Just my two cents...
Well this sucks to hear man. Loosing a G1 is never fun...But the recent threads about the new SPL made it clear that it was only designed for the PVT. And from the looks of it, you probably have a DVT or some other derivative.

Haykuro is not to blame for anything. He also shouldn't have put up more info because....he can't. All of this is pretty much undocumented. It's all trial and error. If it wasn't for people like Haykuro, Dude, or JF...etc. We wouldn't have any of these new updates to our phones.
OP you should of read this first before attempting to use the new SPL.
READ THIS FIRST if you are flashing Haykuros new SPL

Let's imagine for a second that there was a room full of really thirsty kids. I walk in with an unmarked bottle of a strange looking liquid. I can't describe it because I myself don't know much about it. Would you say it would be irresponsible on my part to just leave it there with those kids who don't know any better? More to the point, would you blame me if one of those kids got sick after drinking it?
In a more perfect world, everyone would do a lot of prior research, understand the risks associated with experimental hacks, and fully accept the consequences of bricked devices. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world.
alright a appreciate some of you for been nice and try to help (that was the point for me writting this at first). And for the ones been rude and trying to act all smart ! F&@$ Off ! alright ? i need help and i learned from my mistakes. If you think i acted not rational or smart, you dont have to say anything. Just stay quite and move on and help others that need more help in the forum. Just dont come and start saying stuff that are not helping at all, and for the record i did not blame nobody for the mistake I made. I personally got a G1 running the SPL just fine, and i just didnt know that there were 2 different boards running on the G1's. So please stay away if you are not going to say anything positive, and try to help. thank you.
that sucks
Cant we all just get along
Two months agoi tried updating my phone. I did a reboot after loading a update.zip file from my sd card and my G1 didnt turn on at all. No g1 screen or any kind of response.
And now my G1 is bricked.
My question is do you think they will exchange it for me still? What should I say happened?
Alright this is enough. I think instead of treating users with bricked phones as noobs and lecturing them about being careful, we get to the point and try and help.
First off, we have a whole thread dedicated to the bricked phones now. One member is working on schematics to build an actual USB wire for a force install of a SPL to possibly repair the bricked phone issues. Right now, the plans are done, so we will see if he is able to construct the cable. However, the schematics are already uploaded, so maybe you should give a shot at it. look for the G1 brick technical think thank thread.
Just rooted my captivate. Was about to install a rom(installed rom manager via market) and forgot I haven't purchased an SD card since it didn't come with one for some reason
Can I not treat my 16gb internal storage as my 'sd card'? ie. put my roms on it etc or do I HAVE to have an SD card?
Your thread caught my eye as I have been completing my daily ritual of skimming through the days XDA threads and I thought I would respond. First off congrats on the phone and congrats on rooting. Just a little advice you really should do some research and just when you think you are ready do a little more. I say this in the nicest way I know how and please don't take it the wrong way I am just trying to save you a lot of heartache if something happens to your new phone my friend. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you get into the rooting world as you have root to every thing on your phone. I have no idea what you have read or done, but currently there are a hundreds of roms out there, but there are none currently for the Captivate (unless you count the JM series for the i9000). That is the reason that this thread caught my eye as it kind of sounds like you are about to flash just any ROM. I may be way off of third base and if I am please forgive me. Like I said before I am just trying to save you a lot of heartache. ROMs have to made unique for every platform. For example, Nexus One users can only use ROMs that are made for their phones. There is a lot of misconception out there right now as tech blogs and places make it seem that every phone out there can run Sense or flash Froyo. This is not always the case. Those ROMs have been created by awesome developers that have taken the time to port those features over to their respected devices. So like I said just do yourself a favor and do some research. I will be checking back on this thread or you can PM me anytime with questions I will be more than happy to try and answer questions you may have as I was also once in your shoes. Let me know if you want some help finding some threads that explain things a little better as I have a bunch bookmarked. I have spent probably around 100 hours getting to know Android and how the mod community works, and the "Search" field is honestly your best friend so use it.

Holy **** you're a nice guy.
Oh yeah one more thing I should at least answer your question for you, right lol. Samsung graciously gave us 16gb of internal memory. 2 gb of that is partitioned for apps and the other is used for anything else like music, videos, and whatever else you want to load on your phone. You also have an SD slot that will fit up to 32 gb (I have not tested the 32gb card only the 16gb on the Captivate so if you plan on the 32 do some research to make sure as I read somewhere that Eclair 2.1 phones have had problems recognizing 32 cards). The 16gb is currently more than any Android phone has built in so theoretically we can store 48gb on the phone (again, with 32gb card if indeed that does work with our phones I did read that it can from the official specs). Have fun man this is a great phone and Android is the best platform around.

I try as I used to be in the same situation. You never know who you help out this could be the next Cyanogen or Paul O'Brien lol.
You can, to a certain extent, use your built-in 16GB of storage as an SD card. That extent, however, in all likelihood does not include usig it for upgrading ROMs. Practically every guide I've read so far warns that the internal memory will be erased, and that could be bad if a ROM upgrade program erases itself before the upgrade is complete. Considering that a 16GB MicroSD card can be had for $50 pretty easily, and smaller ones even cheaper, it would make sens to me to just get the damn card and not risk bricking your phone. Also, I think angermeans' caution is well advised, unless this is not your only phone, or your only Captivate, and you like tinkering with phones for fun.

I also read that same thing and I should of added that info. The way that Samsung built this phone is still done in a way different way that all other Android phones before it. I am still wondering why the leading company in flash memory decided to go with an internal SD card for memory. I hope I am wrong about this little bit of info, but from what I have read that is exactly what they have done.
thanks for the replies. i learned last year how to root my g1, install recoveries, roms, etc. even learned how to turn my sd card into ext2,3,4 partition, etc.
it's just been a while and i just assumed people busted ass to get some polished roms out for the galaxy s phones. i really appreciate your post and will just give the community some more time before i jump the gun again.
i was hoping to flash froyo on it
and i don't mind getting an sd card, just didn't want to run into town yesterday afternoon just for the memory card.
thanks guys!
Does anyone have a script or any solution to do this? I have a 32GB class 10 Samsung microsd card and would love to use it for my main SD card.

I'd like something like that too, particularly if it was just a switch to flip. I don't feel comfortable tinkering around with programming if I don't have to.
So, after reading through all the issues some of us have had on these cards..... I was feeling pretty darn good about myself, as I had none.... Well, I have since swapped to a new phone. I now have 2 micro sd cards that can not be reformatted in anyway shape or form.... I have tried (I think), just about all tricks and software. The big question that I'm unsure if anyone has asked is, does anyone think these can be locked by the Kitkat upgrade some of us did? It just strikes me a little odd that, nothing I do will allow me to clean these cards. I have a new card in, and I'm able to read and write like normal. But I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Thanks for any insight
I also asked this in the General section, and got no replies. If a mod would please delete that, or let me know if I can? Thank you.
