Bare WM 6.5 23034 Cooked ROM with unnecessary items removed ~ Witschey - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Bare WM 6.5 23034 Cooked ROM with unnecessary items removed.
Version 2 of this ROM is available in post #4 below. If you are not familiar with this ROM please read the description in post 1, and the "Tips" and "Known Issues" section in post #2 and #3 before proceeding to download the ROM from post #4.
UPDATED on Aug 29, 2009 - 4:00pm US Central Time
Starting with with September 10, 2009 I have decided to consolidate Bare WM 6.5 builds into only one (1) thread. I suggest you subscribe to the following thread to be kept abreast of future updates:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4469872&postcount=1
This ROM follows the same principles as the very popular Bare WM 6.5 23009 ROM which I posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547754
and the Bare WM 6.5 23028 ROM posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550256
It was cooked with the osKitchen (by OndraSter) which can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540704
The ROM follows the principle of getting rid of unnecessary items in the Windows Mobile 6.5 source files in order to make as much RAM available on my Kaiser as possible after the installation of WM 6.5. However I didn't want to 'cripple' features that I needed/wanted to have installed.
The result is a ROM that uses about 32 MB of RAM while the Kaiser is idle (and before you install your own applications). That means that you will have close to 70MB of free RAM with this cooked ROM. The size of the cooked ROM flash image (the NBH file) is: 51 MB, leaving 154 MB of storage space available on the Kaiser.
What I may consider 'unnecessary files' may not be considered the same by others. Therefore I am listing the WM 6.5 items that I removed so that you can determine if this cooked ROM fits your needs. I am also enclosing a folder titled "XXXX- Kitchen Removed Sources.zip" which will show you EXACTLY what was removed. If you miss one of the removed items, simply move it back (to the same directory) and cook a ROM.
** General overview of what was removed:
- All of the non-essential OEM and EXT applications which normally ship with "Os Kitchen". I left only the OEM and EXT items which I found to be necessary for the normal operation of the ROM on the Kaiser. If through your own testing you find that one or more are unnecessary please let me know (as I would want to get rid of it as well!)
- Ringtones and other sound files which are not necessary for the normal operation of the ROM (if you miss one or more of those files you can easily put them in an SD card and access them from there)
- All files (CPR, Images, etc.) that relate to a resolution that is not supported by the Kaiser.
- The 'Calculator' application because there is plenty of great calculators for WM PPC out there, and I don't like to have software duplication.
- All "Windows Live" related stuff, because I don't use it.
- All 'games' that come with WM 6.5 because I don't use them, and there is much better games in the marketplace.
- IPSEC related files because I don't use that type of 'virtual tunnel'.
- LiveSearch because I prefer Google.
- Unnecessary Mobile Office templates
- Remote Desktop (because I don't use that software. I prefer RDM+, which I install separately...not in the ROM)
- Task Manager (because I prefer to install Advanced Task Manager...separately, not in the ROM)
- Skybox (because I don't use Microsoft 'My Phone' and related services.)
- Skymarket (because I don't need a software store on my phone)
- All Themes except for 'Classic Blue' (because I prefer to install my own themes...separately, not in the ROM)
- VOIP (because no VOIP application comes with WM 6.5, and VOIP applications like Skype work without these files. So they seem to be a waste of space. If anybody disagrees and can explain the purpose of those files please let me know.)
- Welcome Center (Because I am experienced enough with WM 6.5 that I don't need somebody to guide me)
- All Windows Mobile Widgets (because I prefer to install my own ....separately not in the ROM).
- Zip viewer (because I prefer to install my own compression/decompression software)
- Microsoft Auto Data Configuration (before I don't need MS to configure my data. I do that manually).
- Lock Screen Media player icons and images (because that feature of WM 6.5 has not been enabled by Microsoft yet)
- Time Bomb removed. You can enjoy this ROM for as long as you like.
*****
In addition to the file removals that I describe above, I made a few changes which apply to BOTH Chocolate and Vanilla Flavors of the ROM.
- I changed the boot screen back to the original HTC screen that says "smart mobility"
- I changed the animation screen back to the original HTC screen that has an animated HTC logo
- I changed the boot up sound to one that uses aprox 100K
- I changed the Windows start up screen to that of Windows Mobile 7
- I added software to fix the animation start up sound (which didn't work in the original build)
- I added software to fix the animation boot up screen (which was mixed with some other stuff that I removed)
- I added a registry entry that changes the default skin on Windows Media Player to Diamond Portrait.
- I added code to install 'Random Access' in the Contacts Screen. (allows quick access to people by clicking letter on the right margin)
- I added code to change the Start menu to a single column vertical list. I consider that MUCH more useful than the hexagon grid.
- I added a registry entry to remove the 'tap time' that is required when selecting items in WM 6.5 folders.
- I added a registry entry to allow two way phone conversations to be recorded with any 3rd party software.
- I added a registry entry to display 'Recording' in the phone menu (shows up in the menu only during a call)
- I fixed the Windows Start, X, OK buttons on the bottom toolbar (because Microsoft used the wrong size).
- I fixed the lock screen background wallpaper alignment.
- I changed the lock screen layout so that the scroll button is at the bottom and the time/appointment at the top.
- In addition the "Chocolate" flavor has these changes:
- Replaced the battery indicator for one that shows the percentage remaining (in increments of 10%), and changes color (White/Orange/Red) depending on the amount of battery remaining.
- Added Advanced Task Manager
- Replaced regular Comm Manager with a 6 item Comm Manager to replace the 3 item one that comes standard with WM 6.5

NOTE: For those who do not like the Chocolate or Vanilla flavors, I am making available the source files so that you can make any necessary changes to suit your taste. All my changes are in the EXT folder and are clearly labeled with "-PW" after the folder name. So you can choose to keep them or remove them based on your personal needs.
And here is an Spb Benchmark test on a fresh copy of this ROM. I don't know if this type of tests are trustworthy, and I have no benchmark to compare it with. All I can say is that the OS feels very fast and responsive. Don't base yourself on the benchmark. Try it and see if it works for you. It does for me.
Here are the files:
a)You can download the "Vanilla" flavored cooked ROM (which is ready to be flashed directly on your device) from here:

Enjoy!
IMPORTANT: The only thing that I ask in return for my contribution is that if you find more space savings you share them with me. I left several items in the OEM and EXT folders because I know for a fact that some of those items ARE needed for the correct functioning of critical features such as movie file playback. However some of those items may not be necessary. If you find out that they are not necessary, or you find other files in the SYS folder that could be removed without affecting performance, please let me know by posting a message on this thread.

Tips:
- After the ROM loads, go to phone settings (Start-Settings-Personal-Phone) and in the "Phone" tab select the Ring Type that you want to use. You can put Ringtones in any folder of your Kaiser and they will appear in the "Ring Type" pull down menu. I put them on external storage (SD Card) under a directory called "My Ringtones".
- Missing MMS Options. Standard Builds of WM 6.5 DO NOT come with MMS. To get MMS read other threads such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=500869.
- HTC Task Manager missing. The source files do not have the HTC task manager and I don't like it anyway; so I purposely didn't install it. If you want the HTC task manager please install it on your own, or cook your own version of my ROM.
- OEM/EXT folders - If you cook your own ROM using my files, you will be able to identify what OEM/EXT packages were added by me, because I follow each package with "-PW". Packages that do not have "-PW" came with the osKitchen, and they appear to be necessary for the proper functioning of the ROM, but I am unable to provide an explanation since I didn't put them together. Contact OndraSter (the maker of osKitchen) in case you have a question about an OEM/EXT package that do not have "-PW" after it.
- Aligning Screen - After you install the new ROM, remember to align the screen. You can do that here: Start - Settings - System - Screen and align your screen from there.
- SIM Manager - Left out on purpose. If you want one, read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...2&postcount=79
- Missing 'owner information' in settings / personal. (ONLY applies to version 1 of this ROM. I have fixed this in version 2 of the ROM). This application was disabled by Microsoft, but fortunately you can enable it with a simply registry trick. Enabling this is critical as many 3rd party applications won't register properly without the owner information.
Remove the "Redirect" value in the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Owner]
- Missing 'Input' in settings / personal. - This application was disabled by Microsoft, but you can enable it with a simply registry trick.
Remove the "Redirect" value in the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Input]
- Migrating all your programs and settings - To migrate all your programs and settings use spb backup 2.0.2. Just make a backup of your Kaiser just before upgrading to this new build of WM 6.5, and after you install the ROM go to the place where you saved the backup and execute the file. Soon after you execute the backup file spb Backup will tell you that your ROM doesn't match and suggest that you use the "upgrade ROM" feature. Do it. If the restoration gets 'stuck' don't worry, it is normal. Just soft reboot your device and execute the same backup executable. This time it WILL finish. That's it. WARNING - DO NOT include Resco Keyboard Pro in the restoration. Resco keyboard is incompatible with build 23034 of WM 6.5 (see 'Known issues) below.
Disable Magnifying Glass - (ONLY applies to version 1 of this ROM. I have fixed this in version 2 of the ROM). If you find the new magnifying glass annoying (it pops up every time you double click) you can disable it with the following registry entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE\MAGNIFIER]
"Enable"=dword:0
- Lock Screen (ONLY applies to version 1 of this ROM. I have fixed this in version 2 of the ROM). - If one receives more than 2 notifications the slide buttons for SMS, VoiceMail, Missed Call, and/or Email overlap with the main unlock button. To solve this issue you need to install a new lock screen layout file (cpr file). This issue is solved in version 2, so I suggest you upgrade; or if you know how to replace the lock screen cpr file download the source files for version 2 and replace the file in your PPC. This is for advanced users so I won't explain how to do it. You either know it, or you should upgrade the whole ROM.

Known Issues:
- Small Fonts get blurry on Titanium / Today Screen, and sometimes images on Today Screen plug-ins (such as Artesea Twmr 6.5r) get distorted. - This issue has been confirmed by other people cooking WM 6.5 23028 regardless of the cook or kitchen used. It seems to be an issue related to the Microsoft code, and I am unable to fix it. ---> Applies to both version 1 and 2
- Dialog boxes of WM 6.5 have an unfinished selection circle as stated by me in the following post (picture also available) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4385259&postcount=434 ---> Applies to both version 1 and 2
- Sashimi 8.0 Auto function doesn't seem to be able to select the storage card during the auto install process of cabs, which results in all software being installed on the main memory of the Kaiser. This is provably related to the 'under the hood' changes that Microsoft incorporated in this build ---> Applies to both version 1 and 2
- spb Keyboard Pro 5.22 - This new build of WM 6.5 is NOT compatible with spb Keyboard Pro v. 5.22. The installation seems to go OK, the logo on the toolbar changes to the spb keyboard logo, etc. However the keyboard can not be opened and other windows mobile 6.5 build 23034 applications stop working such as file manager. ---> Applies to both version 1 and 2

Version 2 - Bare WM 6.5 build 23034 ROM:
Version 2 of this ROM fixes some of the bugs that were reported earlier. You can find out what was fixed by reading the "Tips" and "Known Issues" portions of this thread.
In addition to fixing the issues documented there, I have made the following changes:
- Removed "Advanced Task Manager" from the Chocolate version (the vanilla version never had it), because the new task manager that comes with this build of WM is very good. This also offers you the possibility to add a task manager that fits more with your taste (in case you don't like the one that comes with this build of WM 6.5)
- Reduced the size of the battery indicator that I include with the chocolate version (the Vanilla version never had it). Now it only uses about 11 KB instead of almost 500k before. Since that program is running all the time, this improvement alone saves almost 1/2 MB in RAM usage on version 2 of this ROM. The functionality remains the same It shows the percentage remaining (in increments of 10%) above the graphical depiction of the battery, and changes color (White/Orange/Red) depending on the amount of battery remaining. I have tried many other battery indicators (including some that have the percentage inside the battery) and this is the one I like most.
- Replaced the Start Menu button with a color version instead of the white one that I included with version 1. Below I am enclosing a screen shot so that you can see what it looks like. The rest of the ROM looks exactly like it is depicted in version 1 above (except for the advanced task manager which was removed from all flavors of the ROM).

Eagerly Awaiting
Waiting to try this rom, since it has so much available RAM and ROM.

thank you
Thank you for this ROM and moreover for your PM. The reason I am waiting to try this ROM is cause, after having tried all the ROMS, have noticed there always is some stuff I do not need. Tried cooking, but unable to make much progress. Have always wanted a ROM without windows live messenger, windows search, skybox and all that windows crap.
Just a suggestion, though, if you could include the other battery icon, the one in which the percentage shows inside the battery. Only a suggestion though, which you could consider. The percentage figure is a little larger and so easier to read. Am attaching the cab.
Also, there is this new MOTO today screen, have you tried that?
Am downloading your ROM now, will post comments, if any.
Thank you once again.

I like the idea of having a battery meter that has the percentage inside. However I like the fact that my current choice changes to orange when it reaches about 40%, and to red when it reaches 20%. Can you point me to the source page where you got the cab file you sent me to see if they have the one that is white until it reaches 40%, then orange until it reaches 20% and then red?

I have never heard of the MOTO screen. Can you point me to it so that I can check it out? I have to say that I am quite happy with Titanium, so the MOTO screen would have to be darn good for me to consider it.

aaaaaaabbbbbb

mortifying,
I posted this new ROM only today. So if you had problems with a ROM last night, then it must have been some other ROM and not mine.
This ROM works well as long as you do not try to restore your settings from previous ROM using spb backup. For some reason the "rom upgrade" feature of spb backup doesn't seem to be possible with 23034; I guess Microsoft changed a lot of the registry entries.
If you restore your settings with spb backup you will experience erratic behavior with 23034; but it has nothing to do with the 23034; it has to do with the restoration process which messes up the registry entries.

moto home screen is quite good the only draw back is the ram it consumes, about 17mb, so ya its pretty and all but thats alot of ram

That's a no starter for me. I cooked these Bare ROMs because I want to maximize RAM and get rid of stuff I consider 'junk'; so using 17 MB for a Start Up screen is out of the question for me. Back in the WM 6.1 days I used spb shell 3.01, and I liked it; but the Titanium screen is quite powerful when used with plugins and I am quite satisfied by it. In combination with my modified start menu it fulfills all my needs. The only thing I don't like about the Titanium (today screen) is that the small fonts get a bit blurry over time.

btw i think you misunderstood me XD, moto home is a replacement for titanium, not a home screen image, if thats what you think im referring too

I looked at your your battery meter suggestion and I like the idea of having the percentage inside the battery but your proposal uses a dll file which is inefficient, as it has a bunch of icons that do not pertain to the battery meter.
I found another battery meter with the percentage inside the battery where the dll is only 50K (instead of 1174K), so I am going to consider using that one; but before I roll it out I will have to edit the icons so that from 40% to 20% the icons are orange, and then from 20% to 0% red. I like that visual clue.

Isn't spb shell also a titanium replacement? Anyway, regardless of whether it replaces or sits on top of titanium there is no way I am going to install something that consumes 50% of what the whole operating system consumes when it is on idle.

well its just like m2d, regardless i was just answering your question about you not knowing what moto screen did or what it was, and now you do =)

Yes, thank you for the explanation.

Hi Witschey, thanks for this new ROM.
Maybe a noobs question, but anyway, is it time bombed?

Most of the cabs were built using files and registry settings I removed from my base rom so they work 100%. The other cabs are from dutty, nadavi, chainfire and _alex_, but they are slightly modded. I either added some missing files or deleted unecessary files from them. Install cabs to Device.
MSSolitaire.cab installs solitaire and creates a game folder with the game folder icon. Made separate cab for bubble breaker because I don't like it.
All my roms are UC compliant thanks to Sleuth. More info regarding User Customization can be found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337.
Keyboard is Tilt layout. A cab to change to Kaiser layout is also attached.
this is mine
Feel like putting UC in your next version? UC users will get up and running faster if you can. Here's the link to the development thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366333
yeah, i just realized i didn't put it in. i got caught up testing for bugs and forgot. i'll probably make a UC version of it tomorrow. done for the night.
v0.0 is working great for me. Thanks for removing the camera. How about removing Office. I think that's about all that's left in this rom.

it's 0.1 UC that has the camera removed. are u using 0.0? 0.2 will have office removed. the reason it's still there is because I use it often and I haven't made a cab for it yet. i'll probably do it some time today.
Yes, still using 0.0. I saw that camera was removed in 0.1, and that prompted the office question. There are office cabs floating around, even split up by app. The only one I load is word.
0.2 is up. office removed. it does look possible to install just word if someone wanted to play with it. PowerPoint Mobile seems to take up the most space (3MB for the exe alone).
No camera???
Hi, I'm willing to try this ROM and perform a SPB and VS Benchmark.
But do I read this correct: no camera??? Why not?
yes, no camera.
First reason I removed it is because I'm trying to get this rom very lite. Another is because some users like the new 5.0 camera and others, like myself, prefer the 4.0 camera. In order to satisfy more users I removed the camera, but created a cab for the 4.0 and modded nadavi's 5.0 to work with my rom and assign itself to button 5. you can get all my cabs through the link in my first post.
Later if a newer version comes out you can just uninstall the old and install the new without reflashing. Now I know you can just install a new camera over the old, but doesn't it feel cleaner when you can remove the old one first?
double post. sorry.

Yep, this is why I like Lite Roms. Thanks. I'll load 0.2 tonight.
this is vodaphone base right? does it the screen lag/keyboard issue? or was it fixed with the hong kong dlls?
jakeypoo,
touch.dll is from 3.03 wwe which is the same as 3.08 voda, don't know the version number.
ddi.dll version in my rom is 3.3.0.0 from 3.03 wwe, voda version is 3.8.0.0
my OS base is 3.08 voda, but my OEM base is 3.03 wwe. I decided to use 3.03 for the OEM because there are a few rgu's and provxml's in 3.08 that are voda specific.
haven't looked at the hk rom so I don't know. how much of a lag is there usually? I haven't noticed any problems with lag. I'll try swapping out the files to see if I notice anything. Thanks for the info.
Edit: I just checked the ddi.dll on 3.02, 3.03 and 3.08. The file sizes are exactly the same, it's just the version numbers that differ. The version numbers seems to be the same as the rom version (i.e. 3.02 rom has 3.2.0.0 ddi and 1.60 rom has 1.6.0.0 ddi). Sorry to state again if this is already common knowledge.
well i notice lag on sleuth's (not as bad) and udk's rom with text entry.. if you enter text to fast the screen takes time to catch up.. its like for every 6-7 characters you enter 1 or 2 shows up ..so if you type fast lets say you type the following sentence.. "i really love xda-developers" now as you type that at normal speed you can get to the end of developers and the "xda" part will just be appearing on the screen. do you know what i mean? im very interested in trying this rom so thats why id like to know if you notice any sort of lag what so ever. i do alot of emailing from my phone so this is important :O
thx!
I couldn't type fast enough to notice any lag. I did type random letters as fast as I could and the letters appear as I type. No trailing letters after I finish typing.
As far as screen lag, I don't notice anything like I noticed when I used the original AT&T roms. It is very responsive. I do still notice a slight lag when I touch the screen while playing video using CorePlayer Qtv version, but it's much better than before.
ok, well im going to give 0.2 a whirl.. its stacking up against sleuth's so lets see! :O
great. let me know how it stacks up.
noticed;
- = bad
+ = good. lol
- customer feedback still present
+ speed is insane.
+ touch screen is VERY responsive i mean like WOW
..will continue
traces of Internet Calling still are in the rom incase you didnt know.. this isnt a problem but running today plugin uninstaller it finds voipphone.dll active/installed..
still installing my files to see performance
yeah, I've been trying to get rid of Customer Feedback for a while now. So far all I did was hide the icon since it only nags you once. I saw on the Wizard forum that I can remove ceipui.exe and modify mxip_notify.vol in the shell folder, but everytime I do my rom:
- skips the initial setup
- poutlook gets an error that is is not certified
- dialpad doesn't open
I'll take a look at the voipphone.dll. Glad it worked well for you and thanks for the feedback.
Edit: it looks like the dll that the registry is calling for is voipphonecanvas.dll. The actual file is gone. It actually doesn't even seem to exist in any of the roms I've been cooking from (1.56, 1.60, 1.61, 3.02, 3.03, 3.08). I found the stale reg entry so I'll remove it in my next release. For now all you have to do is delete "Internet Calling" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items

Tutorial: Overclocking and Make It Stick

I Made this tut because I was thoroughly confused when I found omapclock and TornadoPowerControl. This guide is primarily directed towards HTC StrTrk and pretty much makes it so that you can delete the start menu shortcuts and not have to worry about your overclocking ever again. I take no credit for any of these useful tools and no responsibility if your dumb ass tries to over overclock your phone.
EDIT I found out a way to make TPC not show up in your task manager. If you DONT want this then you should skip step 8.
1) Download Tornadopowercontrol14.cab and tcmdphone.cab and load.zip to Windows directory.
2) Install all on your phone
3) Using Total Commander browse to install dir of tornado power control
4) Create a shortcut and place it in the startup directory in Windows
5) Using the Total Commander browse the the startup folder and EDIT the shortcut
6) The shortcut should look something like
60#"\Program Files\TornadoPowerControl\TornadoPowerControl.exe"
7) There are several commands that you can tell the program to run on startup
'dim' starts in dim mode (display is dim)
'bright' starts in bright mode (normal operation)
'hide' hides the app at startup
'toggle' changes from previous mode ie if in bright mode before boot now in dim mode
This is what mine looks like:
60#"\Program Files\TornadoPowerControl\TornadoPowerControl.exe" bright hide
8) If you DON'T want TPC to appear in the task manager then edit your startup shortcut and add italicized characters before your existing characters. Please note, this will render your start menu shortcuts inoperable and you wont be able to get to the TPC GUI. You can even delete the start menu shortcuts (I did).
41#"\Windows\load.exe" -hide "Program Files\Tornado PowerControl\TornadoPowerControl.exe" bright hide9) Now goto your install directory and youll see 3 shortcuts named
Power_On.lnk - controls what happens when your backlight is turned on
Power_BacklightOff.lnk - when backlight turns to dim
Power_UserIdle.lnk - when phone goes into idle (screen off)10) Those 3 files are EMPTY and TPC will not do anything with them if they remain the same.
11) omapclock.exe is included with TPC install and is in the same directory omapclock will respond to command line prompts just like TPC did earlier with Step 7.
12) Delete Power_On.ink. Create a shortcut to omapclock.exe and rename it to Power_On.ink. Edit the shortcut. add '-clock XXX' where XXX is desired speed (I have read other forums where people got stable results at 252 but I elected to stay with 240 for piece of mind)
Heres Mine:
30#"\Program Files\OmapClock\OmapClock.exe" -clock 24013) Reboot and run omapclock from startmenu to make sure that speed is 240, close phone and let screen turn off and repeat
14) Enjoy
Note 1- If you want TPC to lower the speed of the processor when the backlight dims then do the same method as step 12 except replace Power_BacklightOff.ink. I dont know why you would want to slow down the phone even further but I guess you could in theory edit Power_UserIdle.ink and underclock your phone to save battery life maybe.
Note 2- Im using this on erofich's WM6 on Cingular 3125 and tested/benchmarked differences using TCPMP with a Youtube video saved in .flv and noticed significant improvement.
load.exe - props to Slavic for creating
TornadoPowerControl shortcuts

Wow, great post! This worked perfectly on my 3125. Thanks for putting this together!
I saved the 3 edited shortcuts and zipped them up, if anyone would like them for quicker install, e.g. after a new flash, or even if this is your first time.
Once you have installed the TornadoPowerControl cab, copy TornadoPowerControl.lnk to \Windows\StartUp (this replaces steps 3-7 above), and copy Power_On.lnk and Power_BacklightOff.lnk to \Program Files\TornadoPowerControl (overwriting the blank files) (this replaces steps 9-12 above). I have overclocking set to 240 and backlight off clock set to 180 - these can easily be edited to whatever values you want, but you won't have to do the extensive t9 typing required for the full creation of these shortcuts. Will save some time if you flash frequently and/or set up multiple phones.

Has anybody used this on a Q9H?
Thanks in advance

After installing as per instructions, all I get is an error message.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
how do you add italicized text to the beginning of the shortcut file? Changing the font within total commander makes the whole file italicized.
Thank you for great job
Btw, this is the latest version
2.0 Beta 4 - Fixed a bug causing the state of the CPU Speed Indicator not to be saved at exit. Fixed a bug that would cause the application to not fully exit under rare circumstances. Changed form behavior to only show one form at a time - The main form is hidden when another form is active.

[Last Update: Sep 20th 2008] Tweak collection for the HTC Touch Pro

This Thread is basically based on a thread I posted on a German forum. Anyway, it is as useful in English as it is in German
1.) Edit TouchFlo3D application links
SSMaPa also works flawlessly with the Touch Pro – Right now, it does not allow to edit the additional links on TF3D-landscape (tasks, notes, favorites)
2.) TouchFlo3D / WM Tweaks
Due to the amount of tweaks, I will not list them separately. Instead I advise you to use the three applications below to edit and tweak TouchFlo3D and the WindowsMobile OS. Before using these tools, I highly recommend to do a backup of your system.
DiamondTweak 0.5 100% compatible with the TouchPro
TF3D Config A nice application to edit TF3D easily. It also provides some tweaks. I do not recommend this tool anymore since it does not offer anything in addition to DiamondTweaks 0.5 or Advanced Configuration Tool 3.2. Anyway, it allows to tweak some things a bit easier…
Advanced Configuration Tool 3.2 If you want it all, go for this application. I offeres a vast amount of tweaks not only regarding TF3D but the whole WM system. Due to the affinity of the developer to the Touch Diamond/Touch Pro, you will have a very complete tool at hand to tweak almost everything possible. Anyway, if you are not experienced with WM or if you have no clue what it means, do not touch it…
.NET Compact Framework 3.5 has to be installed in order to use Advanced Configuration Tool 3.2
Supplement: If you like you can „enhance” ACT 3.2 with this file (Original-Thread) in order to be able to tweak the SmartTouch-Wheel function and LED-notifications. Just install it on your device, it seamlessly integrated into ACT 3.2.
(All of these tools can be used on one device. However, in order to avoid interference, do a soft reset after using one tool to tweak registry entries.)
List of tweaks offered by these tools:
- Edit sensitivity of the touch display
For maximal sensitivity (lowest pressure):
Advanced Configuration Tool 3.2 --> HTC Touch Flo
Change "Pressure threshold" to 41 and "Finger Pressure" to 18.
- Performance-Tweaks, which enhance the overall and the TF3D performance
- Editing of LED-notification (duration and behavior)
- Tweaking of power management
- Connection settings for LAN, WLAN, BT, GSM/3G, internet and
- Telephone settings
- Email/SMS settings
e.g. threaded SMS can be turned of via ACT3.2: "Messaging-->Threaded SMS" enable or disable
- Calendar settings
- Stadard paths
- HTC-applications/Tools
- Editing of TF3D
ACT3.2 gives advices for some of the settings. If you have questions about the offered tweaks, do not hesitate and ask. Anyway, most of them are pretty much self-explanatory.
3.) Avoiding unwanted cancelation of background applications
In order to improve memory management, the Touch Pro – by default – tries to remain a certain amount of free memory. Once a certain “memory threshold” is reached, the task manager will start to cancel applications that are moved to the background. This might be desirable if you need a lot of free resources for applications that depend heavily on huge amounts of memory but it is a pain in the a… if you want to run a few applications simultaneously (e.g. Google Maps, to find your path, and Opera, to look up a location). So if you know how to use your PPC, you basically do not want this to happen. To avoid it, do the following:
Code:
Registry Path: HKCU\Software\HTC\Task Manager
EnableAutoKill=1
MemoryThreshold
Change “EnableAutoKill” to “0” and/or change the “memorythreshold” to 20MB (listed in bytes).
Be aware that changing these settings might cause the system to report “out of memory”-status more often. (I haven’t had that problem by now)
3.b) Performance Tweaks – Improved memory handling for background applications
Use Advanced Configuration Tool 3.2 and change:
a) Change File system cache to 8MB.
b) Change file system filter cache to 131072.
c) Change Glyph cache to 32KB.
4.) Battery icon with percentage / Improved Task bar icons

Original-Thread – I recommend the CAB-file form this thread
5.) Use SmartTouch Wheel for scrolling
Very good guide how to do it
6.) Add Call-history to TF3D
Use ACT3.2 to do it: Menu->More Settings->TouchFlo3D "CallHistory" auswählen
(do not use a cab file)
7.) Add custom city to the weather panel
8.) Klaxon – alarm clock with G-sensor support
Best alarm application for your Touch Pro available. Great “diamond” user interface, very good touch control (developer’s website)
9.) G-tool to you’re your Touch Pro
Due to the way it locks your pro (turning the device in your hand) I only partially support this application. The Touch Pro is bound to slip out of your hand at one point or another using this gesture.
10.) Edit your T9 library
Slide out the hardware keyboard and press Fn+Space. Choose "T9 My Words" .
11.) Nice Wallpaper Thread
12.) Use TF3D and "Today Screen" simultaneously with Second Today
This tool allows you to use TF3D and the Today Screen at the same time. I recommend editing the soft keys on your TF3D home panel when using this tweak: Edit Softkeys in TF3D (Manila)
13.) Nice “diamond” style calculator
14.) Vibration feedback while typing
This application is still under development. I have not tested it on my own. Anyway, there are some very positive reports out there…
15.) Installation of Backup Software
Your HTC Touch Pro comes with a full featured backup software called SpriteBackup. You can find it on the installation CD that comes with your PRO.
16.) disable ClearType
This slightly enhances performance:
Start->Settings->System->Screen->ClearType
17.) Automated selection of SIP depending on your stylus’ location
Original-Thread
The thread is pretty much self-explanatory. This is a „must have“ for every PPC enthusiast. For some “old-school” applications and e-books/databases it is very much desirable to have the default WindowsCE keyboard as input method one you use the stylus. Honestly, I think the stylus simply works best with the Windows CE keyboard.
18.) Transparent Clock
Original Thread
This clock-mod displays the tiles of the clock as transparent and the numbers solid. Very nice
Simply download the CAB, install and perfom a soft-reset.
19.) Turn of Task Manager
Although I think the HTC Task Manager is doing a great job, some might prefer a third party tool. In order to trun of the Task Manager, do the following:
a) Start->Settings->System->Task-Manager
b) Click on the "Buttons"-tab and unselect everything.
c) Edit Registry-entry: HKCU->Software->HTC->TaskManager – set Value "Enable" to “0”
d) soft-reset
20.)Always start Audio-Booster after a soft-reset even without headset
This does not work 100% but is the closest as I can get it at the moment.
In order to make the attached script work, download the MortScript from here
Attached you will find two scripts within „audiobooster_scripts.zip“:
1.) AudioBooster_autoclose.mscr
This script changes the registry entry for headset to be attached and closes the Audio-Booster once it started (applies the settings which remain after closing the app).
2.) AudioBooster_remain.mscr
This file does not close the Audio-Booster but remains it open. I recommend to make Audio-Booster an exclusive application in order to avoid its appearance within the Task-Manager.
In order to make all this work, you need to move either script into the autostart-folder within the windows-folder on your PPC.
21.) Samsung Omnia 3D video drivers - Performance Tweak!
Mixed reports about TF3D Performance and overall performance improvements using the drivers from this Original Thread. I have the impression everything runs a bit smoother with these drivers on my Touch Pro. Try at your own risk…
22.) Change Keyboard language
Here you will find a detail description how to change the whole input language on your Touch Pro including word completion.
23.) Update Google Maps
If you are using Google Maps constantly you might want to update to the latest version. It provides better favorite management, better VGA support (with a neat VGA icon) and more improvements. The next installment which will arrive soon on WM systems – hopefully – even adds StreetView and Walking-Mode.
The latest CAB-file can be found here (Quelle)
24.) GPS Tweaking
Original Thread
In order to improve GPS performance, do the following:
A. With Advanced config 3.2 :
1. disable A-GPS
2. disable GPS logging
3. logfile name must be empty
4. old logfile name must be empty
5. maximum size of logfile must be 0
6 delete the files : \windows\GPSLogFile.txt and \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
7. it seems that if TomTom is installed on a fast microSD decrease the lag(have to test to be sure)
With those changes car usage will be quite perfect
B. Then edit registry with TotalCommander http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
- Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
These two major tweaks should enhance GPS lock - they do not have any influence on the GPS lag.
The best HTC Touch Diamond/Pro community can be found here:
HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) on XDA-Developers HTC Touch Diamond on XDA-Developers (recommended especially because of its applications, themes and support)
I hope you enjoy these tweaks since they vastly improve your HTC Touch Pro experience.
Always make a backup before changing vital system settings or installing unknown software.
I will include more tweaks as they become aware to me...

If you do not mind if I almost only copy and pase?
diamond tweak is not 100% compatible. for example look to the browser string...
omnia pro drivers are already in the touch pro os. so no need for "tweaking" it with old/unstable drivers.
but anyway, thanks for this list.

How can you prove that the driver is already in the touch pro? i noticed that the TFL3D is smoother now with the Omnia driver (the one mentioned above) installed

The 3D may be smoother however you can get this effect by tweaking your cache settings...there is definatly a D3D driver already in the Raphael.
+1 for adding it to the wiki
But it might be nice to keep this thread rolling for updates and troubleshooting problems any people are having.
Edit: Can we also make a note for disabling ClearType in landscape? I saw no less than 3 separate threads today with users wondering where there text/menus went. It's not a "tweak" per-se, but the option is in there in AC3.2, so if people tweaking their Raphaels they should know that the option doesn't work as expected.
maybe even make a sticky for this thread
Very nice thread indeed...
May I ask why the audiobooster part is not 100% as mentioned in the 1st post?
I didn't find any probs with it yet...
I just hate the headset volume during calls and the loudspeaker volume so does all of you.
Keep'em coming n thanks

If you keep the audio booster running in the back, you will be notified once you remove the headset from the Pro that audio booster only works when the headset is connected. But as far as I noticed, once the audiobooster is running and gets terminated, the audiosettings remain the same way you set them up... right? At least that's what I noticed.
Does anyone have a clue how to make the volume control a bit more sensitive via hardware buttons? Right now it takes only 5 steps to set it from low to high. However, if you touch the volume bar, you can actually set it up very precisely. I want to be able to do this with the hardware buttons as well... Anyone with a clue?

Will do! I translated it from my German Thread on a German forum
there's a another tweak thread in this forum for a long while, too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=413562
wasnt set sticky, so i guess this thread here will be never, too. calling for sticky would be useless in my opinion.
to the omnia 3d drivers: can someone please post his benchmarks (like pocket sandra or similar) with original and omnia 3d drivers please? just to say the device runs smoother is not a proven appointment. and of course there are other threads to this omnia thing where you can find more information about this "tweak".
to the cleartype landscape mode: htc devs know about this and i guess, it will be fixed in later roms by htc.
and again, this list here is great. but for real, all the performance tweaks did sujective 1% more performance to my device. i got rom 1.90.407.4 GER.
I tried the omnia drivers and it totally wrecked my system. The phone will freeze as TouchFlo3D is loading.
Had to do a hard reset and restore operation using Sprite Backup. Hopefully everything is fine.

1. disable A-GPS
2. disable GPS logging
3. logfile name must be empty
4. old logfile name must be empty
5. maximum size of logfile must be 0
6 delete the files : \windows\GPSLogFile.txt and \windows\GPSLogFileBack.txt
7. it seems that if TomTom is installed on a fast microSD decrease the lag(have to test to be sure)
With those changes car usage will be quite perfect
B. Then edit registry with TotalCommander http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab
Under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\GPS Intermediate Driver\
- Drivers\GpsOneDevice\PollInterval -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Drivers\InputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\OutputBufferSize -> 512 (default is 4096)
- Drivers\SleepOnNoData -> 100 (default is 1000)
- Multiplexer\MaxBufferSize -> 512 (by default not present, you have to create it)
These two major tweaks should enhance GPS lock - they do not have any influence on the GPS lag.
Click to collapse
Anyone tested that? Does it really helps much?
Update: Sorry. found that there's a link discussing this.

WM6.5.5|101m|6.5 kernel|Full Roms By jjblaster3|upd 23529|translatable|16/Feb/2010

ROM development has come to an end... Reason is i got a new device and had to sell my htc kaiser in the process.
i recently learned how to cook roms and had great help from many people (much appreciation to them)... cant mention all of them coz i probably dont remember but a few are TPC, OndraSter, mbarvian, joshkoss, S.V.I, Anryl, Da_g, stylez and more. sry if i dint mention u
FYI - i don't hold myself responsible for any damages caused by my roms. I advise that if u dont know what ur doing, do some research on how to flash a rom and always remember to have hardspl before flashing any custom rom, i would suggest reading the [Resources] Flashing Your First Kaiser Rom (For Noobs) thread
ok so i like full roms and i recently made a stable version with which im on my 3rd day now and i would like people to give their opinions on my rom i.e the things which may not be needed in a full rom or perhaps the things which should be added...
native 6.5 kernel is used in this rom (no more recmodding )
the rom is loaded, but its smooth as can be.
i would like to hear ur feedback so that we "together" can make the perfect full rom
p.s. for at&t tilt users, install tilt keybd fix
thanks to joaquinrl, this rom can now be translated into spanish & portuguese for all spanish & portuguese users who would like to get a taste of my rom... info on how to do it is found here
Button mapping:
PTT button - comm manager
PTT button hold - Hibernate (small clean ram app)
OK button under jog wheel - home screen/m2d home tab
OK button under jog wheel hold - AE button plus action menu
Tap X to minimize
Tap&Hold X to close

oh i also recommend to extract the attached zip-compressed reg file into storage card/XDA_UC (recommended to put it before flashing) to maximize performance.
-if u cant access the links inside the multiupload link, i took the liberty of attaching a txt file with them contained (please use only when u cant access multiupload)
-XDA_UC included in rom, read here to see how it works and other stuff updated here
ps FOR ALL THOSE EXPERIENCING HARD RESET/SOFT RESET/BOOTING ISSUES WHICH CAN NOT BE SOLVED BY A SIMPLE SOFTRESET, PLEASE FLASH TO STOCK ROM FIRST, THEN RE-FLASH TO MY ROM. note that this mostly happens on the full rom.
Before posting any questions, please read the FAQ located on the 3rd post

------big thanks to stuntdouble for his great help in making this possible ------
------i did a bit of editing(just a bit) (mostly just shortening) but i think there's alot of stuff which still needs to be added here------
Backup your device before making any unfamiliar changes. Hell just backup anyway, you can never have too many backups, only too few.
Guide based on 28004 full/light roms + onwards.
FAQ (some common questions and links to answers)
Q. how do u install (flash) jjlaster3's roms?
Flashing Your First Kaiser Rom (For Noobs)
and before flashing, please make sure you have HardSPL installed. Also if using Vista or Win 7 (flashing thru pc) make sure you have administrator priviledges.
Q. i experience hard-reset issues (phone hardresetting for no reason) / soft reset issues / phone freezing alot
Re-flash to a stock rom. Then install JJ's. Then flash a recommended radio version.
Q. How do I fix issues with: no sound, camera problems, GPS issues, etc.?
Change your radio!
Recommended radios (which can be found in the ultimate radio thread) are as follows:
1.65.16.25 (if you have GPS problems then use this)
1.70.19.09
1.71.09.01 (if you have battery draining too fast, try this)
Q. Having problems with no Weather showing on today screen?
Update your city in location tab (very improtant to do this first), then go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4989599&postcount=550
or if u dnt want to use the patch, go here
Q. where can i find patched m2d for custom weather cities?
get it here
Q. Battery draining fast? Tried different radios already? Try these tips:
Reduce backlight time and brightness.
Turn off bluetooth, GPS, wifi, and direct-push when not in use.
Pressing the power button doesnt power off your device, it only sends it to sleep. To turn off fully hold the right side power button for 5 seconds and switch off device when not needed, i.e. overnight.
Try this
if all fails, look at this thread and consider changing spl
Q. Why is my GPS taking so long to get a fix?
try using the gps test program to get a fix, more info on how to do this here
This seems to be radio dependant. Try the recommended radio 1.65.16.25.
Q. My sim card isn't working with your rom. Why?
Unlock your phone, follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2004192&postcount=1
Q. Why don't all screens work properly in landscape mode?
Manila was not made for the Kaiser. It is only a port.
Q. Where can I get just the phone dialler, or other diallers?
htc mega dialer (the one included in 28008)
pimp ur pocket pc wm6.5 dialer(the one on my earliest of builds)
m2d 2g dialer skin (blue)
Q. How do I customise the look of my phone?
themes and some 6.5.x customizations(top bar styles, bottom bar styles, bottom button styles, menu styles, selection bar styles, etc, etc) done by Livven
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578468
S2U2 themes here:
http://s2u2.ppc-theme.com/
manila 2d themes here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575723
Q. How do i get a hardware button to do what I want it to do?
Map the key using the included AEBplus
Q. Why isn't activesync working?
Do you have a supported operating system and all drivers updated? IF not you may be able to get around this by using Microsoft Virtual PC to run a copy of XP.
Q. How do I get rid of the time in the top corner?
You can't it's coded into the rom. You can however get around this by running SPB mobile shell or some other progam on top of it.
Q. Why won't my CAB file install?
It's not supported by this OS. Find a copy that is supported from the manufacturer, or search these forums.
Sometimes an interrupting program may be open so either softreset or hunt it down with a task manager
Q. You haven't installed the program I wanted. Why not?
make a suggestion for it and will get back to you
Everyone wants something different, not everyone will like the same rom. (it is simply a matter of preference and thats y there r many roms by different chefs available, or better yet a guide to make ur own rom here
Others:
Q. expiry image on today screen / start menu. How do I remove it?
Delete the reg keys in here using total commander or some other registry editing program:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Device Beta]
Q. How do I get Marketplace working for older builds?
go here
what taskmanager is used in this rom? does it support tap&hold x button to close?
apart from fdcsoft taskmanager (for xdauc reg n xml stuff) and stock ms taskmgr, the one specifically used for the wm6.5.x build is called ArkSwitch, more info here. After reading, you'll get an answer to the 2nd qsn
Q. Want to edit the startup look(animation/splashscreen etc) of your phone?
Go here
Q. Want to try cooking your own rom?
Go here or the noob guide here
Q. Problems not fixed from reading this FAQ or hard/soft resets? Try these:
If all else fails, try flashing back to a stock rom and radio, then reflash JJblaster3's rom with a recommended radio.
Install extra programs one at a time keeping backups at each stage to find the cause of your issues. Then post your findings giving as many details as possible.
Q. What is a "stock" rom?
A rom made by a proper manufacturer for your device. Lots listed here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs

thanks lol, its up now. calling it a test since its the first release but we'll see how that goes
Hope u guys like it
Good job man. Glad to see you aren't the sheep like every other rom cooker. Been looking for a WM6.5 rom with 85MB ram. Especially a new WM6.5 23060.
downloading : D
Just flashed it myself. Anyone interested in running GLbenchmark will need to do this.
UPDATE: GLbenchmark doesn't seem to wanna go past the second test. Either that, or I'm not giving it a lot of time. Doesn't matter, cause Call of Duty 2 works with 3D acceleration. :3 Now I can finally look into other 3D applications, like Quake 3.
Great.. I like the spirit of making ROMS on newer builds and to try to keep them fast ..
In the past I tried a huge quantity of ROMs (I flash a new ROM about every week), last 6.5.1 are TPC and Shifu's ROMS... TPCs are ugly SLOW! They are also beautiful, but aren't utilizable as also in message writing them stuck (lose most of letters!)!
Otherwise Shifu's ROM (3.1 is on 6.5.1 23049) is amazingly fast and well loaded!
It has S2U2 (that's beautiful and most of all helpful cause if you have a lost call, with new Mega Manila you can't see it, but with S2U2 if you click on the icon and then slide you see it ...)..
Also Shifu's ROM has volume toggle mapped to the PPT button ! Beautiful icons, "Isaac Mizrahi purple" and Menu Enhancement are the touch of cosmetic perfection of the ROM..
I really love it..
You can take example on his ROM and make even a better ROM with all this, newer build and maybe faster speed !
I will wait a true ROM that can have these features !
Oh.. and also CA Drivers are helpful for graphic performance, aren't them?
Why did you took out them ?
Just a few things
Firstly congrats on making this ROM, great work.
Couple of issues i found which if improved could make it even more awesome:
1. You may which to consider using the ver 5.04 camera drivers instead of v6 as our autofocus doesnt work at all with v6.
2. There's are missing link to the comm manager, doesnt get mapped to any keys and i cant find it available for mapping in the "Buttons" cpl
3. Backlight brightness adjustment doesnt work.
4. Consider using a different version of the "Album" app. The included one doesnt render corectly and is more limited in functionallity.
5. Quick Gps updates but wont apply update, punks out with an error.
6. Not sure about you but seems there are battery drainage issues too.
Like i said great work. The above are jus bugfix suggestions for making great work even better
Yes battery drain is a problem, cos 40% went without any use of the phone in 7 hours, and i mean no usage cos i was asleep lol, wonder what could be causin this drain, i also noticed a lot of ram being used almost 70% at one point
I didn't experience any strange battery drainage. Over night, it only lost 3% power. Then again, I changed the power settings with AdvancedConfig 3.3, as I always do when I flash a new rom.
I go into battery and enable all the power management stuff. Go into phone to turn on fast sleep. Enable phone sleep during call. I also remember the power settings were set really strange too. Like 30 minutes for it to sleep when plugged in.
Quick Gps asks for location setting to be on. Not sure what that is, but it doesn't matter. I use GPStest, and iGo seems to run just fine.
I can't adjust the back-light either.
Just a note, would be nice if jjblaster3 could offer a version without Manilla 2D. Also, since it's 85MB ram, should probably come with the HTC graphics drivers. The internal storage also seems limited, like it's not using compression. Maybe offer a version with compression enabled?
Wow, much faster than 23053... 23053 was laggy like crazy... This one seems much responsive... Some little bugs here and there like when connecting to a wifi hotspot... but overall much preferrable over other roms... TFS...
Edit: For the battery problem... I noticed, this ROM has super BIG volume... maybe that cud cause it?>
drownage, I noticed the high volume too. It seems to only drain battery life when it rings. I've lowered it a lot to acceptable levels.
i need to see some screenshots before i venture into this one
I can confirm that the backlight adjustment is NOT working...
ljinsane, its the same Manila Mega layout.. Screens wont be much different... its jsut faster, and more responssive... and the gfx drivers are much better than what i have seen so far...
Sorry for double post...

Massive THANKS to jmart518 for the cab files !!!
CHANGELOG IN POST 3 - CHECK THERE FOR LATEST VERSION INFO
Well here it is, finally! What started out as three of us playing about with basic layouts and text colours has morphed into 6 weeks worth of work in my spare time creating from scratch a completely new WVGA theme for Weatherpanel. Every layout has been written from scratch, pretty much every icon, background, transition, etc has been created specifically for DDT (except the actual weather icons which is a modified set of Rumball's static Diamond VGA icons as they are without doubt the best weather icon set out there) and this is the result - we hope you like it!
This thread originally started out as a tutorial for getting Weatherpanel up and running on your HD2, giving it somewhere to live (in our case Second Today from Chi-Tai) and linking it using CHTE to be the default weather app. I've removed most of the rather longwinded background behind the project from this post as I'm sure most of you have read it by now, however for new visitors to our little HD2 WP community, welcome and we hope you find what you're searching for here! Weatherpanel really is the most comprehensive weather app out there - it may be old but it is still the best as far as information, accuracy and user customisation goes. Now with this new theme we reckon that visually and from an intuitive UI point of view it blows the other weather apps away (and it's free!)
Before we start I must give credit where due to Marsware, the original creators of Weatherpanel, Chi-Tai for Second Today and of course the remarkable Mssrs Cookiemonster & JCM for the unbelievably superb CHT & CHTE without all of whom none of this would have been possible. Thanks also to my two brothers in insomnia - Davej and Troed whose initial tweaks to the original Phatphinger and Diamond themes set us off down this road in the first place, and for keeping me going over the last few weeks - thanks guys!
Right, so here's why - Basically, fed up with the lack of information on the Sense weather tab I was looking for a way to click on the weather section of the Home tab and be taken to a much better weather app than the weather tab. Days and weeks of searching and experimentation finally led me to the following solution - Weatherpanel (an old WM Today plugin) given a home in Second Today which is in turn set as the preferred weather app in CHTE. It is all beautifully simple and works perfectly.
Let's get this out of the way before we start in BIG RED LETTERS:
This does not replace the Sense weather tab !!!
It is still there and can be accessed from your slider as usual. This setup simply directs a touch on the weather element of CHT to Second Today & Weatherpanel.
About DAVEJ's Animated Icon Set
My very good friend Dave has spent way too many hours editing Rumballs original VGA animated icon set and resizing the various sets to make them fit this theme. The icons set is huge at over 88Mb! Unfortunately WP uses a rather crude MNG image format (renamed .wpa) which means very large files compared to gifs. As a consequence the size of the main screen large animated icons has had to be kept smaller than we would ideally have liked because to make them the same size as the static icons would have meant each file was way over 10mb and caused WP to run at a snails pace or crash altogether. So Dave arrived at the best compromise he could to balance size over performance. The smaller sets are absolutely fine. We have culled frames in many of them to keep the overall size down and have made them all single play. And as you go up in the various sizes Dave has thinned out the sets progressively until the Huge ones on the main screen have just the most common weather types animated and the rest are static (otherwise you'd have had a 150Mb icon set!). They do slow WP down a bit but we think they are well worth it! We all run both icon sets and themes and switch between them as the mood takes us...
IF YOU WANT TO USE THE ANIMATED ICONS YOU MUST INSTALL THE RELEVANT AI (ANIMATED ICON) VERSION OF THE THEME AFTER THE MAIN INSTALL HAS COMPLETED - INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED BELOW!
Here is the walkthrough:
IMPORTANT FOR NEW USERS AND EXISTING USERS UPDATING TO THE NEW THEME:
For some reason the maximum useable screen area for WP differs between 6.5 and 6.5.x ROMS. Basically in 6.5 ROMs WP can be set to a maximum visible height of 720 pixels, whereas 6.5.x can go to 760 pixels (proper full screen below your taskbar). Also, we have discovered that Weatherpanel takes it's time format from your main phone settings (12hr/24hr) and as the layouts I originally wrote were for 24hr there were errors on screen if you are using 12hr time format. I have therefor created two complete versions of the theme so make sure you download the correct one for your WM version, each with three layout options in both 12 and 24hr format, otherwise the theme will not look right and you may be left with a scrollbar and overlapping elements on screen. Also, you must pay particular attention to the setup instructions for Second Today on first run - Disable Command Bar - as otherwise you will not get full screen and instead will have an unsightly scrollbar down the right hand side of your screen.
FULL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW USERS
(ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR ANIMATED ICON SET IN THIS COLOUR)
There are two cab files linked to below which will do 90% of the installation for you. Make sure you download the correct cab for your WM version (6.5 or 6.5.x). Both cabs can be used for installs with or without CHT, and include the necessary reg settings for both CHT 1.8.5 and CHT 2.0
1. Download the relevant cab file for your WM version:
COMPLETE CAB INSTALL FOR WM 6.5
COMPLETE CAB INSTALL FOR WM 6.5.x
If you want the option of using Dave's animated icon set you will also need to download and unzip the relevant additional AI (Animated Icons) theme folder :
ANIMATED ICONS ADD-ON FOR WM 6.5
ANIMATED ICONS ADD-ON FOR WM 6.5.x
2. Download and unzip one or both of the icon sets:
STATIC ICON SET
DAVEJ'S ANIMATED ICON SET
IMPORTANT - When unzipping files you may find that you end up with a folder within a folder (DDT Mod Diamond WVGA Static Icons>DDT Mod Diamond WVGA Static Icons, same with icons folder) - Make sure you take the 'inner' folder out and use it to copy as if you forget to do this the icons will not appear in Weatherpanel
3. Install the cab to your storage card (you can put it in main memory if you like but the icon files will need to go there too and they are big folders (around 17Mb for the Static Icons and 88Mb!!! for the Animated Icons) - it runs perfectly well from the SD card). The cab will then install Second Today automatically to your device, and Weatherpanel and the theme to your storage card.
4. When the cab finishes intalling Weatherpanel runs through an extract process and will probably leave you with a WP window asking you to select language (default is English). Select your language then press your hardware back key. Then you can click OK as normal after a cab install.
5. Now you need to copy the complete unzipped icon set folder(s) to Storage Card>Program Files>Marware>Weatherpanel>Icons. If you are installing the animated icon set you also now need to install the unzipped AI theme folder to Storage Card>Program Files>Marsware>Weatherpanel>Themes
6. SOFT RESET
7. Now you need to open Weatherpanel for the first time. If you are using CHT then simply touch on the weather element of your home tab. If you are not using CHT then you need to go to Start Menu>Second Today and click on Second Today. First time you open it you will either get a blank screen with a message at the top saying invalid layout or you will see the Second Today settings window. If you see the few lines of text at the top of an otherwise blank screen then simply touch on this message and it will open the Weatherpanel settings screen. If you see the Second Today settings window it means that the ST settings haven't 'stuck' during the install so you need to do the following before proceeding:
7.1. On the plugins tab check the box beside Weatherpanel and make sure NO other boxes are checked
7.2. Still on the plugin tab check 'Use Custom Background' and then browse to whatever wallpaper you want for your main WP screen - don't use anything too light as some of the text won't show up!
7.3. On the display tab delete any text in the Window-Title box
7.4. Check the box beside 'Disable Command Bar' - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!
Once you have made these changes click on the right softkey to accept the settings and you will be taken to the blank screen with the few lines of text at the top (touch on the text at the top of the screen), or directly to the WP settings window.
8. You then need to set up Weatherpanel by doing the following:
NB There is no confirm or back softkey in the WP settings screen so once you have entered all you need to on a certain screen you need to press your hardware back key to return to the previous screen or to exit settings altogether.
8.1 Add your cities (NOTE - WP does not utilise My Location so you have to manually enter locations you want weather info for) which is just a case of clicking 'Add New', then entering your city name in the 'Search For' box.
8.2 Once you’ve added each new city you then need to add weather images for each city (if you want weather maps to show up). If all your cities are in the same part of the world (i.e. Europe) then you just need to add the same image(s) for each city. I’m in the UK so all my cities use the same Europe maps. For more info on finding and adding weather images look HERE and try http://www.weathercharts.org/ - thanks again Troed
8.3 Once you’ve added all your cities and images click on the Display tab. The theme, icon set and layout are all already preselected by the cab install. You do however have a choice of six possible DDT layouts to select from in the Layout dropdown list (V2+, V2Mid, V2Lite in either 12 or 24hr format - see below). Select the layout you would like to try first, and make sure you select the correct version for the time format you use on your phone. If you are wanting to use the animated icons and have followed the instructions correctly to this point you need to change the Theme to the AI theme you will have in the Theme dropdown. Then simply choose your preferred layout as before, and in the Icon dropdown select the Animated icon set.
Once you’ve done this then click your hardware back key and you should then see the main WP display for the first city in your list. The left/right arrows beside the location name let you scroll through your cities. To exit the WP screen back to wherever you were simply click your hardware back or home key.
Job done
If once you've followed the installation instructions you are having any issues with not seeing the full screen, or having a scrollbar down the right hand side of the screen (and you have definitely installed the correct version of the theme for your WM version) please do the following:
With Weatherpanel open press your hardware Start Menu button. The open the Second Today folder and click on SToday Settings. In the Display tab make sure that 'Disable Command Bar' is checked. Exit by pressing the right softkey and Weatherpanel should now look correct.
About User Translation
THIS WILL ONLY WORK WITH DDT V2 - NOT PREVIOUS VERSIONS
This final edition of the theme is now fully user translatable through the use of the lang.txt file attached at the bottom of this post. All you need to do is download the file, open it in any text editor (Notepad is perfect for the job) and translate the text on the right hand side of each entry. The attached sample is for German users so if you want DDT in German then simply use this file! Once you've completed your translation save the file as lang.txt and copy it to the main Weatherpanel folder on your storage card (Storage Card>Program Files>Marsware>Weatherpanel).
There are a few things to bear in mind when you are translating:
1. Please stick as closely as possible to the number of characters in the english version of each text entry as this is the text the theme was designed around and if you increase the number of characters it will mess up the look of the theme or the text may not display at all.
2. You will be limited to the language specific characters available in the fonts used in DDT (Helvetica and Helvetice Neue Thin) so probably no Chinese or Russian translations?
3. Once you have translated I apologise if some of the grammar or syntax doesn't track perfectly but again the theme is written in English and although I have done my best to break the text up in such a way that when translated it makes sense there may be one or two elements that aren't perfect!
If you do translate the lang.txt into something other than German (or if you produce a better German one than mine!) please post it in the thread with the filename lang_*language*.txt (i.e. lang_french.txt) and I will compile a library of translation files in the second post.
Dave and I also reckon there should be a prize for the most amusing English adaptation of the text - do and English to English translation but substitute where relevant for amusing alternatives (ie Snow=Jeez, it's cold out here etc...)

Main screen layout options and navigation overview
V2+
V2Mid
V2Lite
There are three options for the main screen in the theme - V2+ (shown on the left above with two hide/reveal panels to play with), V2Mid (shown in the centre with the 5-day forecast permanently displayed and a hide/reveal info panel) and V2Lite (shown on the right above withboth the info and forecast panels permanently displayed). In the V2+ and V2Mid layouts the info panel is opened with the info button on the left hand side of the screen, and in the V2+ layout the five day forecast panel is opened by clicking on the five suns at the very bottom of the screen. Once the forecast panel is open you can then click on each day to be taken to a full forecast summary for that day.
Most elements on the main screen are clickable as shown above, and in each subsequent screen you will find a shortcut navigation panel on the top right of the screen allowing you direct access to anywhere else in WP you might wish to go. In addition, wherever the moon appears in the theme you can click on it to be taken to the Lunar Schedule page. It would take me forever to explain the function of every element in the theme, but as they are all very intuitive and each screen is fully self-explanatory I'll just let you play around and discover it all for yourself! You can't break it by playing around too much so have fun! As a rough guide however the various screens are as follows:
Main screen - contains all relevant current weather data (with info panel open), 5 day overview (with forecast panel open, sunrise/sunset times, local time for location selected, current moon phase, current temp, etc
1 - Current conditions screen - gives a bit more detail along with a 24 hour combined temp/rain chart
2 - 10-day summary page - each day is clickable to access the main forecast page for that day
3 - Lunar Schedule - with current and next moon phase info
4 - Charts page - four hourly/daily charts showing forecast max/min temp, precipitation, windspeeed and humidiy
5 - Full forecast page - Day and evening forecasts for the selected day, plus moon info
6 - Radars page - where web weather images, traffic cam images, etc you specify in your radars.txt appear and can animate. The player buttons are hidden when you first open an image page - to open the controls simply touch and hold on the image for a second or so and the buttons will appear.
If you are in Europe then you can download the attached radar.txt file and overwrite the one in the Weatherpanel folder on your storage card as it contains several more Europe radar image URLs.
Hope this walkthrough helps anyone else out there as thick as me to get there a lot quicker than I did! Now I have four questions for the clever people out there to do with things that would make it better but which I have no chance of finding a solution to on my own:
Any questions/suggestions please feel free to ask.
Enjoy
One word of warning - WP can be pretty data intensive so beware! I have two cities and four weather images and the update size is around 1MB, so if I have it set on hourly updates I can easily hit 10MB+ each day. I only hook up on wifi at home and work so not a problem, but if you are using mobile data you may want to keep an eye on it.

FAQs
FAQs & Add-ons
City name cut off or overlapping left/right arrows - When you search for your city in the WP Add City screen it will appear in the Name box at the top of the screen as City, Country. In a lot of instances this will make the name too long to fit on screen in the space I have allowed. All you need to do is edit the City name in the Name box at the top of the screen to either remove or abbreviate the Country or State name and it should now fit. Also if you cannot find your tiny village in the search then just search the nearest large town, select it and edit the name in the top box to that of your village.
Can I use other WP icon sets - No. I have edited the Diamond VGA icon set, which has included adding in some missing ones and creating a full new set of resized moon icons. The theme also uses 5 different sizes of icons which other sets will not necessarily have.
Does it work with My Location - No. I am hoping someone far cleverer than me may pick this up and find a way of making it work but I'm afraid this is far beyond my meagre skills!
Animated icons? - Davej is currently working on an animated set of the main screen icons but at present the set is about 120Mb+ and slow to run so don't hold your breath - it may take some time!
Scrollbar showing on right hand side of screen - Either you are using a 6.5 ROM and have not followed the instructions for overwriting the 6.5 optimised files, or you have not followed the last instruction in Step 9 to Disable Command Bar in Second Today settings
Multiple city images overlapping when switching between cities - HERE - Thanks fmlarsen
Waiting for storage card error message - HERE - Thanks scandiskfr
Get rid of annoying beeps and alert noises - HERE - Thanks davej
To add additional weather images - Search online on your PC for current weather forecast for desired location. Once you've found a weather map/satellite image/radar image/etc that you want to use right click on it and select properties. Then copy the URL from the properties box. Open the radars.txt file from your WP folder using Notepad on your PC. You then need to add a name for the image, then hit enter and on the next line paste the URL (it'll make sense when you open the file!). Note - quite a few of the good looking weather images you'll find will be flash so you won't be able to incorporate them. Also try http://www.weathercharts.org/ and look HERE for more info Troed has posted on this
Sunrise/sunset times not showing correctly in 12hr format - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SELECTED ONE OF THE 12hr LAYOUTS IN THE DROPDOWN LIST
LITE version - If you would prefer to have the two popout panels (info and 5-day forecast) permanently displayed on the main screen there are two layout options in the theme folders available for download in the first post. Open WP settings and select DDT_Ultimate_V1Lite in the layout menu.
For Lite users - if you would prefer not to have the semi-transparent background behind the info panel 996r has created a fully transparent version which you can download HERE - just overwrite to the DDT theme folder.
Changing the background on all screens - The custom background you select during the setup process for Second Today is the background that will appear on the main screen only. If you want to apply the same (or any other background image) to the rest of the WP screens (with the exception of the Lunar Schedule and Detailed Forecast screens which use specific custom backgrounds) then you need to make a background image exactly 480x788 in png format, name it bkg.png and overwrite the one in the DDT theme folder. Restart WP and there you go.
Android causing problems with Weatherpanel - Look HERE - many thanks to jaguaralani for this one You'll have to follow his instructions for both the V1+ and V1Lite wpl's if you have both in the theme folder
GPS Setting - On the Connection tab in WP Settings there is an option for setting the GPS Port and Baud Rate. This does absolutely nothing so don't bother with it. The original developer of the core WP software disappeared in 2005 and it has remained pretty much unedited since then. This was something that appears to have been being planned for a later revision but that never happened.
For US Users - In some parts of the US Weatherpanel will provide weather alerts for certain conditions. As I don't get these in the UK I hadn't thought to do anything about an alert POPUP so WP uses the one from the default theme folder which isn't very pretty! I'll have a go at putting one together but as I can't test it it will be good luck if it looks any good! In the meantime Troed has edited the default one to be a bit more readable. Download and unzip the Alert.zip from this post and copy the Alert.wpx into Storage Card>Program Files>Marsware>Weatherpanel>Themes>DDT Ultimate

I don't think so. The closest solution would be one similar to here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563150 - where you'd need to use MTP or similar to add a new tab in manila then deselect Sense weather tab in display settings. You'd then need to find the right bit of the registry to edit for CHT to then send you to the new tab when touching on the home tab weather element?
I didn't want to do this as it seems like far too much hassle and the solution above is really easy to implement.
Thanks a ton. Great instruction. Only problem: The Name of my city in the main screen is cut on both sides (as if it was too long), but there is still a lot of space to the edges of the screen. Any suggestions?
super, but, can i have this app in one .cab please, i'm geek ;p
thank you
I have followed everything step by step multiple times but when I get to the step to choose the layout, I don't see the option on the drop down for Phat+265.wpl, any ideas on this? Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Thanks for a great walk-through

I had this too, sorry forgot to mention it! Basically I found that when you go into WP settings to add or edit one of your cities you just remove the country name from after the city name in the very top box on the screen, then just hardware back key and it is saved - job done!

Yes it does as it is not integrated in Sense and therefore dependent on the SenseVersion or something (like the Sense-Tab-Integrated-Version you might have seen somewhere). This Proggi is fully based on SecondToday which should even run on WinMob2003

pretty cool.. good job.. hopefully a cab will be issued
