If possible, can you guys please edit the default system.settings on your rom so Settings.System.AIRPLANE_MODE_RADIOS = 'cell, bluetooth' instead of 'cell,bluetooth,wifi'.
That way wifi works on airplane mode.
Bluetooth still doesn't work even if you did AIRPLANE_MODE_RADIOS = 'cell' or even 'cell,wifi'. For some unknown reason.
here is the source code for a program I wrote for this (its on the market), but its pretty easy to change and maybe we won't need my app for it.

Are you serious??? Wifi on with Airplane Mode?.... you know what airplane mode is right?... it means no communications from or to the device so it's safe to radio frequencies used in airplanes....
For me the airplane mode is a good way not to get your device turned off while your flying, so you still can play, write docs or anything you want inside your device (listening to music too)...
I don't think that is wise to turn on wifi on airplane mode!

if wi-fi on airplanes is a big deal then why do most commercial airlines have wi-fi on board now?
Well for me i would love to have wifi or bluetooth enabled when im in air plane mode. Just useing the device to listen to music or do little things would save alot of power

Usually, when you talk about something is because you know, or because you at least researched:
- Some airlines are starting to implement Wi-Fi on some of their planes
- Some phones let you turn on wifi while on airplane mode.
- Since iPhone OS version 2.0, you can enable wifi while on airplane mode, and now, since iPhone OS version 3.0, you can enable bluetooth while on airplane mode.
- Some Nokia phones ask you what do you want to disable when you go in airplane mode, they let the user choose.

American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America, Southwest, Delta, Continental and some of the smaller airlines started offering In-Flight WiFi last year. The planes that are WiFi capable are usually newer and/or have updated electrical and communications systems, not the 40 year old hub jumpers flying from Dallas to St Louis.
Normal WiFi operates on the 2500 to 5000 Mhz radio spectrum. Inflight WiFi operates on the 849 Mhz radio band, which is dedicated solely to inflight WiFi. While this is in the sub100 to 2000 Mhz radio spectrum that the airplanes communication and navigation systems operate on, the systems ignore the 849 Mhz frequency. You have to disable the cellular phone signal because it operates on the 850 and 1900 Mhz radio bands, which are also used by and could possibly interfere with the planes communication equipment. FM radios also need to be off because they operate from 76 to 108 Mhz, also in the range of the comm equipment. Even though the plane flies through radio signals in this range all the time with no ill effects, they ask that those devices be turned off as a precautionary measure, as in better safe than sorry.

No problem. This is a feature I'd like to see implemented as well, because it saves having to haul out the laptop to check emails and text/chat mid-flight, only to find I'm in a row with no power outlet (this happened once on my way to Japan, worst 16 hours of my life). I just wish there was a way around the NO VoIP restriction.

Well, when you go into airplane mode radio gets turned off. However, if you shutdown sync, from my understanding, you won't be able to use gmail (please correct me if I'm wrong). There might be a few processes that can be killed but I don't think it'll do that much of a difference in terms of battery life or performance since it'll only be 1 maybe 2 services.
What cyanogen meant by his tweet was that he will change the sync toggle on the donut power widget, and replace it with a radio toggle, so you can just shutdown the cellphone radio and then you won't have to worry about wifi,bluetooth, etc not working in airplane mode. So, you'll actually won't be using the "airplane mode" option, just the "radio off" option...
I think that's a great idea for his rom, however, I don't think that would be something that will be done on android donut's branch or other long term branches, we need to try to put the ability to select what you want to turn off when you go officially into airplane mode, that way it doesn't confuse people and/or people think that android phones can't go into wifi because they don't really understand what "radio off" really does.

Correct. However, I never said that we will disable sync. I said that what cyanogen meant was that he will REPLACE the sync toggle on the power widget on his rom, with a toggle that turns off radio only.

Isn't there a way to just turn off phone functions? Some time ago I had an HP iPaq hw6945 (great phone by the way), and you have the possibility to turn off the "Phone" (kinda locks the sim card) so you could use the phone as a regular PDA. This way you could turn on the wifi and use it the way you like. In the G1 if the sim card gets locked then the lockscreen pops up and you can't use your device at all. Can be posible to lock the sim card without locking the phone? This could help this inflight-wifi request, I think.
Edit: This is just an idea, please don't burn me again!

Yes there is. You need to install AnyCut, free, or BetterCut, not free. And add a new application shortcut for "Phone Info".
Then open the "phone info" icon on your home screen, and go all the way down and there will be a button that says "Turn off radio"
As you can see, its a tedious process and it's why we would like options for the Airplane Mode, something like what my app does. For now, cyanogen is trying to switch the sync toggle on the power widget, and replace it with a radio toggle so you can do exactly what you want, but easy and fast.

I know this app is out there somewhere, but I'm unable to come up with the right search terms and I'm hoping that someone reading this thread will know what i'm talking about. So here goes:
I need a program that basically acts as a scheduler for which services will be turned on and off.
For instance, If I know that i walk to work between 7:30 - 8:00am, I'd like Bluetooth=On, Wifi=Off, Phone=On, etc. Once I get to work between 8 and 5, I might want this program to turn the bluetooth off, turn 3G data off, etc, but then once I get home turn wifi On, Bluetooth back on, etc etc. You get the idea. Basically a program that I schedule when certain connections should be available, which is really just a way to conserve maximum battery power. I saw a program that did exactly this during the waiting for the fuze to come out, but I must have forgotten to bookmark that page.
Any help would be much appreciated!!

I tried the previous version 2.3 and it had some issues with randomly disconnecting bluetooth so for me it wasn't a keeper. Maybe current version has this bug ironed out.

Check out SPB Phone Suite, it has a lot of scheduling features for com and sound settings
I use SPB Phone Suite, and it works as a dream.
You can also set a profile that is linked to your calendar, so you can make the phone silent when in a meeting.
It also support hardware-triggers, like turning on a profile when charging, another when headset is connected and so on.
Thanks for the replies gents. I think SQB might have been the one I'm thinking of. If there are others people use, keep them coming. If there's a free tool that will do this, even better, but i suppose $20 might be reasonable depending on what else the software does. I'll check it out.

I am curious, but the only way I can think of to ask this question is to provide an example or two, so bear with me.
You decide you need directions. Fire up Google maps, click my location and it says you need to enable data...DOH!, back out to the menu (or follow the prompt), enable either GPS or Data, and go back into maps. Get what you need, and then leave Maps. Dont forget to turn the GPS or Data back off!
Wouldnt it be better if when you enter Google Maps, it would fire up the GPS or Data connection automatically? And when you back out or have a period of inactivity, disable it.
Same thing with the internet, I know Locale and others can turn on and off the wifi depending on where you are, but, for example, when I am home I rarely need wifi. However, when I open the internet it would be great if it looked for a friendly wifi signal and tried to connect if possible. That way you are always connecting the fastest possible method for your application and doing the least amount of work. If the disconnect would be an issue (since none of the programs has an exit button) maybe a variable timer could be set, or maybe base it off of inactivity.
Like I said, they are just ideas, and I have never understood why nobody (WM for example) has ever implemented anything like this. It seems like it would help conserve battery power and at the same time greatly simplify things.
When you put the G1 to sleep it shuts off the wifi connection automatically, then when you turn it back on, it reconnects to the network if you're still near it.
I have always wondered why Google Maps doesn't turn on GPS when it needs it. It does on the iPhone as far as I know. I have really wanted this to happen for awhile but I just figured Google would be the ones to add it.

Yeah I wonder why also, maybe they were in a rush or some battery issue. also iphone doesn't have gps just the cell location I usually keep that on.
Not being of mathematical mind im having trouble understanding the settings in a tasker profile i want to create.
What i need is a rule that would
a) switch on wifi when the screen is switched on
b) switch off wifi 2 minutes after screen turns off

android does that automatically. when the screen is of wifi goes to sleep after a certain timeout (you can change that timeout using OCLF)

Yes I maybe I'm a retard and I'm sure I'm going to burn in forum flames of hell, and I'm sure the developer has worked very hard on this and he/she should be congratulated as I would never be able to do what they have done. That aside I'm a paying customer so I am entitled to my opinion. Unless we have all turned into Apple pricks
I'm really disappointed with how poor this is. I feel the UI is very unintuitive, cheap and kind of ugly, I have no idea how to use it and haven't the time or patience to sit in for a week to learn how to. Even the website is the same tatty thing that I saw back in the early part of the year.
I feel a great improvement would be that I could just scroll through all the different pre-made tasks and profiles (in the app not a broswer) created by Joe public and approved by the developer and with a tap of a finger and bit of personalizing, bob is your uncle! away we go!

It is simply a tool that will trigger an (set of) action(s) on a set (combination of) event(s), nothing more, nothing less, make it as complex as you want.

- Auto switch on/off Wifi when i am near my home (based on Cell tower location)
- Auto switch off Wifi after 10 min of a lost connection
- Auto switch off Wifi 10 min after being switched on and no connection was made
- Start skype when wifi is connected, logout skype on wifi disconnect
- Have a incoming SMS read aloud when phone is connected to carkit
- Auto mute between 23:00 and 06:00 except for favourite contacts
- Auto mute when in a meeting
- Disable Auto rotate for certain apps (Ebook reading in bed is annoying otherwise)
- Auto Enable GPS for specific apps and disable afterwards
- Auto switch on Bluetooth when WiFi connection lost (probably going to my car)
- Auto switch off Bluetooth after 10 min of a lost connection
- Auto switch off Bluetooth 10 min after being switched on and no connection was made

When I first bought Tasker, I felt the same way. The UI felt difficult to understand and I couldn't really get it to do what I wanted. Every few weeks, I would redownload it and give it another try, then quickly give up. At some point, it started to make sense and I figured out how it all works.
Yes, Tasker has a large learning curve and the UI needs work, but the time it took to figure it out has been so well worth it.

Part of the attraction of Tasker for me is that it's not centred around loading and personalising profiles from a public 'bank'. Yes there are profiles that people have shared, both on the Tasker website and in numerous threads on various forums. I treated these as learning examples, 'tutorials', and used them to gain an understanding of how to start writing my own profiles.
I've had Tasker about 3 / 4 months and have written approximately 15 profiles that have significantly changed how I interact with my N1, and how it interacts with my environment. These range from the very simple (reduce media volume when a wired headset is plugged in), to the horrendously complicated (workaround an issue with my bluetooth connection to my car kit).
I doubt whether I would have bothered to experiment to this extent if the focus had been on loading up and personalising publicised profiles.
I agree that the UI is perhaps less polished than other apps, however at most I would suggest that the dev has concentrated first on function over form. As a software developer who cut his teeth on mainframe COBOL I approve of that, particularly given the number of pretty but buggy apps on the market. Personally I care more about Tasker working correctly - I don't want my phone to ring during meetings if it's set not to - than looking pretty, as (in between tweaking profiles) I don't really see the app itself.

Anywho, i now have had a different idea - tasker should switch on wifi, check if a known network exists and if it does connect. If not it should switch wifi off.

Which is exactly what the WiFi Near Profile does,
with the time interval for each check being possible to set to your own liking.
However, you adding additional restrictions based on the cell-near could save some useless scanning. Usually Wifi Access points have a fairly static location don't they, so why do a WiFi Near scan if you are not at your home/work/collage anyway.

How did you achieve the logout on wifi disconnect? I can't get Tasker to kill apps, which is said to be a common problem under the latest FroYo stock ROMs (at least for my Desire HD)
I don't have root access btw, since that requires me to downgrade my ROM first, which would cause me to loose my warranty...

How did you get wifi to switch off when its not connected to any network, occasional i leave the house and i forget to switch wifi off. I tried location based wifi off but it wont be as fast or accurate as switching off wifi when theirs no connection after lets say 1-2 minutes. I considered getting another app to do this after i tried to get it to work with tasker, but i have enough apps running in the background.
Do any of you leave gps turned on always so that tasker works better with locations? for me with just network location it can take some time to update and to turn on a profile.

That may be linked to timings of background context checks when the screen is off.
Personally I always leave GPS on, but only use Net location / Cell IDs for my Tasker location contexts.

I am posting one everyday this week and I think I have a couple more. I will post even more whenever I either come up with new ideas or someone gives me a new idea.
Ok, I have a very basic understanding of tasker. I actually was able to make my gps app turn on the gps when being executed. I only added gps off exit task after reading the wiki. However, I'm trying to find a way to do the following:
when selecting pandora icon (I say icon, as I may need a pointer to the actual app)
verify wifi connection status - if connected, then load pandora app; if not connected, kill pandora app (might be redundant but just in case)
I also need to create a general wifi connection status, such that if connection is lost, kill specific running apps (such as pandora; could add more later)
I tend to fall asleep using headphones and pandora. I'd REALLY hate to find out that my cable/wifi went down while asleep and I've just been listening to pandora using cell data for several hours.
Now, making a profile to turn on wifi is easy enough, but not sure how to do the above. I'd imagine it'd be something like:
If [pandora app] initiated
wifi_connected = 1 (or yes or whatever)
then load [pandora app]
any help would be appreciated
EDIT: Nevermind. Though knowing more about how variables are used in TASKER would be interesting (I'll play around with them some more), I found out that with wifi ON, cell data usage is cut off. I disconnected my cable connection and with wifi still on, I couldn't connect to anything. So worry was unfounded, it turns out.

Some actual description of what the tasker profiles do would be very helpful... also less tit shots so that I don't catch crap for looking at the site from work would be nice.

I was trying to make 2 profiles
Profile 1 - I have set up a profile so that when i plug in a headphone with no mic ( and no mic in options ) , it opens the music app
Profile 2 - i have also set up another profile , when i plug in a Headset with mic ( and mic in options) , it opens the dialer.
However when i plug in the headset it opens both the Dialer and music app . Is there a way to prevent the music app from opening.

Sorry for the delay. I don't know of a way personally. I can only work with what I got and I don't have a headset with a mic so I have no way of testing. One option you could do though is have a menu pop up and ask you which you want.
I recently released Wireless Minder on the Play Store and would like your feedback. The short description is that it automatically powers down unused radios and occasionally powers them up to check for a connection. A radio "up periscope" is an analogy I like to use.
There are refinements that I'm planning and surely more that I haven't thought of. It's stable and functional enough that I wanted to get it out there. Knowing me, the longer it sits around the more likely it'll get forgotten

Sounds interesting, but I'll pose this question / scenario:
Say I turn my mobile data [3/4g] off, and use minder to mind to mind mobile data, while wifi is off. If wifi is off and it does its check based on a poll count, when it sees wifi is off, is there anything that will cause it to stay connected? or rather, what's making it stay disabled in that scenario.

The behavior now is that it will try to keep one of the data connections active. If WiFi is connected, and Mobile 3G/4G is selected, it will periodically shut off the Mobile radio. It powers it back up occasionally to check for texts, missed calls, etc.
If there is no WiFi connectivity, it will not shut off the Mobile radio even if the option is selected. Is your preference to periodically shut off the Mobile radio even if there's no WiFi? I could add that option in the Settings. I plan to add a user option to choose how long to keep the Mobile radio active.
Edit: Fixed backwards logic typo
Not to be rude but it looks like a nice app to have but it seems like you need to redesign the UI.
If you know how to code it then ill design it for you and ill send you the PSD or JPEG files so you
can intergrate it into your app. Just let me know. :good:

That would be preferable, because there are times when I have neither wifi or 3g connected. You can still get calls / text without mobile data, unless you're using a voip app, like google voice, etc.
Good app. Thanks for sharing. If you plan to release a donation version, take my advice and keep these basic features free to cater to your initial user base.
You should add features like: SSID exception lists (guest, public etc.), configurable minding intervals per module and time of day schedules when minder should scan (no need to scan for car bluetooth while sleeping).
EDIT: And automatic start at boot option.
Maybe also make some of these features part of the donate / pro version.

What you're referring to is disabling Mobile Data which still allows calls/texts to go through. That doesn't save much power since the cellular radio remains on. Wireless Minder completely turns off the cellular radio by using a modified version of Airplane Mode. It's the only switch Android provides to disable the Mobile radio. The side effect of this is of course that calls/texts will not operate when the Mobile radio is turned off.
Would you like an option to periodically check Mobile Data and disable it if there's no cellular service? Searching for service can chew through battery but I'm not sure if disabling Mobile Data will improve that. I'd need to figure out a way to offer both features without confusing people.

I intend to keep the base version free. I've considered releasing a paid Pro version, it depends on how much work I end up having to put into advanced features. I like your idea of having independent timers for each radio as well as a scheduler. I'll put those on the list and add them as soon as I can.
Wireless Minder does auto-start at bootup. Are you asking for a switch to disable that?
As requested, I've added separate check interval settings for WiFi, Bluetooth and Mobile. Just uploaded version 1.04 to the Play Store and it may take a few hours for the listing to be updated. Sorry this took so long. The custom picker control was a PITB.
Next on the list is a user-selectable schedule for Wireless Minder to be active.

Version 1.05 adds scheduling: choose when Wireless Minder should manage the radios. I've accounted for the corner cases that I could think of such as the start time being later than the stop time (e.g. night owls). I only have so much time to test all the different scenarios so please let me know if you see a problem.

Edit: I've seen odd behavior that may be related to scheduling with Mobile 3G/4G enabled on Android 4.2+ devices. On those devices, superuser is required to modify airplane mode. What seems to happen is that superuser blocks for a long time then when it releases, a bunch of queued up checking events fire rapidly in succession. It's been a tough one to nail down so if anyone sees this please report your settings and when it happens (for example, right after the schedule start time passes).

version 1.06 adds option to mind mobile data: automatically disable mobile data when WiFi is connected (and automatically enable mobile data when WiFi disconnects).
Add setting option to open hidden Radio Info menu. This allows changes to the mobile radio speed 2G/3G/4G (aka EVDO/GSM, WCDMA, LTE).
Temporarily disable mobile radio control on Android 4.2+ devices due to SU blocking.
i like your idea, but i'm not willing to cut the cord and turn off the cellular radio. I usually leave wifi off anyway, i guess i could just use it for bluetooth...

Yes control of the cellular radio is optional and off by default. Everyone's situation is different, just note that WiFi uses alot less power than the cellular radio. Some phones get twice as much battery runtime when on WiFi compared to only the cellular radio.
Personally I've found the Bluetooth functionality to be handy. When I hop in the car, I don't have to worry about manually turning on Bluetooth (or turning it off when I get out of the car). When a call is made or received, Bluetooth automatically turns on and it connects quickly enough to take the call.

I've seen instances where the WiFi drops but mobile data isn't automatically re-enabled. Let me know if this happens and with what type of WiFi connection (home, public, etc).
On cm10.2 nightly your app is unable to detect that my phone is rooted. But otherwise neat idea, i like this app.

I disabled mobile radio control in version 1.06 because su was blocking with scheduling enabled. When this happens, the alarms get queued up and when su decides to unblock, they fire rapidly in succession. It's a very poor user experience. I've tried to pin down the problem but haven't found a solution yet. It's either RootTools or su itself not behaving as expected.

I just saw your message, sorry for the late response. Oddly your comment didn't show on the Play Store. Regarding the mobile radio (e.g. GSM), Google doesn't provide a standard way to control it just by itself. The only common method is through Airplane Mode. To address your concern, I've configured Airplane Mode to allow WiFi and Bluetooth to continue working. The recently released version has revamped mobile/cellular behavior. It defaults to controlling Mobile Data (leaving the radio on). If you'd like it to control the Mobile Radio, there's an option under Settings.

Disable Wi-Fi/Data/Network mode except if active - Connections are only disabled if there is negligible data transfer while the screen is off. Some music services don't "stream" but instead download entire songs at once, and they might do this while the screen is still on. Please set the disable time interval to at least the length of your average song so LD can catch data activity while the screen is off or use the except if "Except if apps running" option.
Disable Wi-Fi except if browser has web login - WiFi is not disabled if it requires a browser login (common for public hotspots or guest networks), so that you do not have to re-enter the password when it is re-enabled.

You mean so that you can tell how long they were turned off for? Good question, there's gotta be some app that can pull up those statistics. For WiFi, you can check your battery usage chart.

Suggestions:
1. When im playing few multiplayer games like Heroes of Order and Chaos etc, i usually tend to leave my phone aside for one or two min, so with my current setup where the radios are turned off after one min, the internet might get disconnected hence me loosing the game. So if there is a feature which can check if there is data transfer then dont turn off the radios. Same goes with me downloading some files and the radios might turn off causing the download to fail. - I guess it is answered in the description, my mistake
2. Where it says turn on radios to sync/receive after a specific time period, is thee way to only switch on the 2g network to save more juice?

2) No, there is currently no option to do that. I wouldn't recommend it either. 2G/Edge is so slow it wouldn't even be able to connect and do anything in the brief time it has to sync.

Thats strange, i noticed yesterday when my phone was connected to the charger it turned off radios. Maybe something to do with my new ROM that i flashed. Will check it today in the night. Thanks for your response
Yes, but LeandData stop traffic also if tethering is on. In this case every time you have to switch on 3g again and reconnect your notebook.

Yes, please check for me as this could potentially be a bug. What did it turn off? It should not turn anything off if the device is charging. Also, if you connect a charger after the app has already turned off connections, it should turn them back on. Please ensure you haven't left any other similar apps running. The WiFi turning off with the screen off could also be a system option.
If you do indeed find a problem please let me know what Android version you are running. You can also check the Logcat if you filter for LeanData. Tell me what you see around the time of the problem.

I see. How are you tethering? USB or Bluetooth? If you are tethering through USB the device should be considered charging in which case it should not turn off the connections anyway. I will look into Bluetooth tethering.

As expected, i cleaned up everything on my device and flashed a new build. Installed LeanData and used the same settings, all working fine. Radios get turned on when plugged into the charger. Thanks for your time, quick response and efforts
To be honest, i have used many similar apps and never got this almost perfect feeling for any app
Wish i could donate, but running on low budget due to my job. Will donate once things settle down at my end.

MIUI rom have a application to monitor intenet connect of all application. it's great and I cannot find other app can do like this on Playstore. Bcs many app ask permission connect network althought they are no need to run. But I guest they need permission connect network to sending some information silently.

GPS might also be a worthy addition!
Only the paid version of dsbatterysaver includes GPS. Right now, I have tasker turn it on and off with the screen when unplugged but that means no syncing of location using GPS.
