I've been watching the Touch Pro for a long time now but was put off by the high price tag (500 quid for a phone is a bit ott even for me lol!) and also the GPS lag problems.
The other day I found a fix for the satnav then found a Touch Pro for sale at CEX for 215 unlocked with 12 month warranty... sold! It's Vodafone branded but unlocked and runs fine with my Orange contract SIM.
Since I got it I first ended up here researching the laggy graphics and foudn this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442712&page=126
Seems to be for a different phone but same chipset so maybe one to try at a later date.
Been reading a bit further and more Google and found that Vodafone put a really crappy version of the ROM on and that the new one fixes a lot of issues
http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18695&st=120
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=518937
Just checked and I'm on the original 1.9 ROM, might explain a lot lol.
Main bugbears on mine are the touchscreen being inaccurate and the speaker being a bit on the quiet side, not tried the GPS yet but this should fix it http://blog.mohdimran.com/htc-touch-pro-gps-problem-tweaking/
Also read about the SPL that apparently blocks Vodafone handsets from getting HTC updates but here's the odd thing... I'd think it would also be what locks the phone to one network yet mine works on all so maybe it's been part upgraded? Also seen this ROM with WM 6.5 that looks interesting...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517296&page=239
So basically I'm wondering where to go next on my TP, either the Vodafone or the Energy ROM (or neither?) and do I need to mess with the SPL or is it likely that it's already been done in the unlocking process?
Cheers

You'll need to go into bootloader mode to see your SPL.
Make sure it has been flashed with hard SPL or you cannot flash to a custom ROM.
Search AudioPara 3 for your low speaker issue.
for the inaccurate touch screen, go to settings, screen, and recalibrate it. you probably had a bad calibration from the start. use your stylus when you do it too, this will help if you think it's off/inaccurate

Tried that, I think it's just the type of touch screen and the fact it's smaller than my hp 6915 and seems to be a different type of touchscreen (doesn't feel like the membrane type the HP had... resistive touchscreen now it appears) that seems to make it feel different.
So far it looks like the Energy Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM and the updated 1.12 \ 1.14 aerial updates are worth a shot... just need to check and double check I download the right ones before doing anything!!!
I only bought my tp recently as my hermes started playing up all of a sudden and I was able to get the tp cheap off ebay as new...
All the trustworthy youtube reviews didn't mention any of the issues you talk of and when I received the tp in the mail until now I haven't seen any of those issues either.
I wonder if its only a certain manufacturing run or one built for a certain area?
As for roms, I didn't realise mine came with an old 6.1 cooked rom because it looked so much like the youtube reviews. I then downloaded a 6.5 rom that was also old, but seemed to work great. The cook ceased the support for it as he moved onto the tp2. It was the PROven 4.3 Rhodium Manila. The phone is now perfect for what I need and old rom or not I don't think I'll bother doing the 'rom of the month' merry-go-round. LINK
Anyway, I'm not sure if the upgraded touchflo is available on a 6.1 platform, but that alone makes the old touchflo that came with 6.1 feel old and restricted.
I got a $15 av cable off ebay and have it connected to my 7" touchscreen dvd player in the car. My friends get blown away with the whole idea of youtube in the car. Laggy graphics? Not mine. Plays youtube a treat and mp4 vids great. I do all my conversions to mp4 at specific quality levels so not to overstress the tp...
I have the rss feed from my torrent site updating and when there's something I want I remote desktop to my server at home and fire up the torrent.
I particularly love the way sms messages are handled, like a continuing conversation and opening a new sms automatically goes into reply mode...
Happy touch proing!

Hi there!
I have recently discovered the HTC line of smartphones and have gotten really keen on buying one. I generally love smart devices that allow me to do a lot of things. I'm mostly interested in the phone functionality (obviously), Wifi connection, music playback and preferably playing videos (xvid etc).
The Blue Angel seems really nice and from what I've read it can play video decently without transcoding. I like to watch documentaries and stuff, and wish to be able to stream from my share over Wifi or just easily copy over to the memory card.
For the stuff that I want to do, would you say that the Blue Angel is the best one (I don't have that much money to spend on this so I'm looking around the second hand market).
It would be a big plus if the smartphone could handle SDHC, but that doesn't seem too common. I would hope that some smart person enables support for SDHC in the Blue Angel one day
Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks in advance!
i would say a universal or a axim x50v or x51v(htc made but just a pda)
the universal i have not tried but seems like a good device(i should of bought it, i saw it in a pawn shop for $90 dollars) and i think theirs a cooked rom for it the updates it to wm6 and has SDHC support but you should check the forums for each device to check or the XDA-wiki to see the specs
Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Unfortunately, after a very quick browse it seems that the units that you mention are _far_ more expensive than the Blue Angel (even second hand) and very much out of my price range.
Yes, I'm on a tight budget here, so I guess the question is more Blue Angel vs Wizard, etc.
Thanks!
Blue Angel vs Wizard? Oh easy ^^ BlueAngel, the name sounds hotter and its a hell of a lot faster. (And the screen doesnt die after a while, the wizard has some issue with the keyboard thingy, thin kabel attached to it that after a while tends to give some fancy stripes on your display.. reset fixes that tho.. but still anoying.)
how much you got to spend?
From what I read, the Blue Angel does not support Edge and the wizard does (I'm sure someone will let me know if that's incorrect)...both can have wm6 installed on them but the Blue Angel comes with WM2003 and the wizard comes with WM5 by default.
He didnt mention he needed EDGE and wm6 is easy to get running on the Blue Angel.. but true, it doesnt come standard with it (well he is going to buy it secondhand, so chances are that it will tho )
sorry about that. i have a htc wizard and so far it still works and has had many drops and has gone through many flashes so i would say a wizard is a good device to start with like i did. just keep in mind that you should get g3 ver. and not g4 because g3 you can flash the radio and other stuff more easy.(G3 = IPL/SPL:2.xx or 3.xx | G4 = IPL/SPL: 2.xx.x.xx or something like this but you get it, more numbers )
That's all right, thanks for the tips!
What about the HTC TyTS (Hermes)? It seems very powerful and much newer than the Blue Angel. What do you think?
I'd go with the Hermes myself. It's the poorman's kaiser.
Cool, thanks!
From what I've read (recently discovered it) it seems to have more and newer features than the Blue Angel and it's also quite plentiful on the second hand market here in Sweden. It seems I will be able to get one for not much more than a Blue Angel, also.
Other cool things is that it seems to handle SDHC-cards (right?) so that I can put 8 GB in it.
Also it seems to play video at least as well as the Blue Angel. Can anyone confirm this?
Incidentally the Kaiser (TyTN II) because of bad drivers has really bad video playback, according to what I've read (not that it would be an option for me anyway. It seems quite expensive. I'd go for the poormans Kaiser then )
Unlocking TyTN
Ok, I've got a HTC TyTN that I'm very interested in buying. It is, however, operator locked to a 3G operator. Is there software available for unlocking it on my own, or do I have to pay for that?
Hi all
I have been using a HTC Hermes (t-mobile vario II) for the last 2 years now and the phone is starting to show its age, still working but cracks have started to appear in the housing, the paint has all but worn off and i think its time for me to get a new handset.
the KEY thing for me is a DEDICATED keyboard like on the hermes/TP hence my decision on provisionnaly settling on a HTC Touch Pro device!
now, i do not know how many of the current touch pro adopters came from the hermes side or have used a hermes so this question is to them:
1) Does the TP feel QUICK compared to the Hermes?
the rest of the questions are for the normal users:
2) does the slider on the touch pro feel solid? i.e. no side-to-side rocking?
3) what is the battery life like under normal use?
4) I am reading about problems with the device as per it not waking up after going to sleep and a soft-reset being required, has this been proven to be the flakey touchflo3d software??
i will be using the handset primarily as a document viewer/IM/email/phone device and as such i will quite probably be stripping the first rom i could find to cook it my own way, so....
5) is it possible to get true vga on this device? i.e. changing the DPI of the screen from 96 --> 128?
6) are there are any other known issues with the Raphael device?
this is all part of my 'pre purchasing research' and i will be getting this handset as i have got all my other handsets sim free but instead of getting them second hand like i have been, this one will be brand spanking new and i will most likely be paying sticker price unless someone can find a nice e-tailer selling it cheap!
many many thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this and to everyone who takes the time to reply
upside .
My previous phone was a Hermes:
1. Yes, big difference. A lot snappier, and overall more stable and powerfull.
2. Yes, better then my Hermes (disassembled my Hermes a few times, maybe that's why, but i defenately like the spring slider mechanism of the TP, al lot smoother then the Hermes.)
3. Define normal. For me it's about 30% better then the Hermes. About 24 hours under heavy use.
4. Yes, if you don't run TF3D on a stock ROM, it has no problems at all. But if you want ot run TF3D : I've flashed the stock ROM that proved to be buggy to DCS 1.5 and no crashes since then even with TF3D running.
5. Don't know, never tried that.
6. Nothing serious that i know of.
Overall i'm very satisfied with my device, i think it's the perfect upgrade for the Hermes. Hope this helps.
Hi Friends:
I'm seriously considering to cancel my HTC MOGUL PPC-6800 and buy the new HTC TOUCH PRO 2, however, would help me with their experiences and recommendations especially coming from current owners ... my questions are:
1. Can I keep my number of Iusacell (Mogul) in new TP2?
2. Is there a procedure to obtain the "SPC Code MSL?
3. Are the procedure and software to unlock (Hard-SPL) the TP2?
4. What are your experiences with the latest ROMs for the TP2? What worked best for them?
5. What are the main differences between TP1 and TP2?
6. Other Recommendations for the Acquisition of a TP2? (clean ESN, accessories, etc.).
Thanks
TecMan
SPRINT HTC MOGUL PPC-6800
ROM version: Titan 23017-Mattsm
Carrier: Iusacell-Mexico (Plan Elite-50)
Radio version: 3.42.50
Memory Card: 8GB microSDHC
The TP2 CDMA is not currently unlockable. Cmonex at PPCGeeks is close, the had the HardSPL done but had some issues with the radio updates and had to redo some work.
The difference between the TP and TP2 is more or less overall quality and screen size. I suggest you visit cnet and watch a review for each.
1. Generally yes, you can keep your number, but make certain to keep your account (the one that currently HAS that number) active until the porting is complete.
2. The MSL can be easily obtained on the Sprint model, but my understanding is that the MSL on the Verizon must be gotten from customer support. The good news there is that they have been very generous with that information for existing customers. New customers must have service for 60 days or more.
3. As pointed out above, this is not yet ready and is KILLING those of us that already have the phone.
4. As there is no HardSPL for the CDMA versions, there are no custom roms to be had (yet), though several chefs have them ready. The GSM-only versions of the device (HTC's and Tmobile's) have SPL and roms, but they have no headphone jack.
5. PROS: The biggest and best reason to switch is the huge and stunning screen on the TP2. I have both, and as much as I loved the clarity of the TP's screen, it was always too small. The 3.6" on the TP2 is bigger, just as sharp, higher resolution, and more responsive. The keyboard is so damn big as to be superlative, the return of screen-tilting is fantastic, the built-in headphone jack rocks, the new speakerphone setup is as good as claimed, once quickGPS is installed the GPS locks are nearly instantaneous, and the whole device *feels* faster despite being on roughly the same hardware. Oh, the new wifi chip is MUCH better on battery when on but not being actively used and it never gets blistering hot like the TP1.
CONS: It's both larger and heavier than the TP1 - about the same size and weight as the old Tilt, tho it fits the hand better than the tilt. It's pricey to be sure, it has NO D-PAD! This sounds minor, but has proven to be a hassle with certain programs (particularly my e-reader).
In the end, I *love* the TP2 and wouldn't consider switching back under any circumstances.
6. Clean ESN?? ALWAYS: why line yourself up for trouble? While my device showed up with a screen protector in the box, it wasn't a very good one, so I'd recommend you order the phone and a good protector at the same time. Look carefully into GPS software: some versions are not playing nice with the monster screen on the TP2, though I've used Google Maps and Route 66 without issue. There are also a instructions on how to get Igo 8 working on it.
Isn't the MSL for Verizon 000000. I'm pretty sure it is

I think there are 2 differents topics here: (if I'm in the wrong way, ps tell me)
The HardSPL it's for changing the ROM
And for "Unlock" "carrier" you need CID/Security/SIM Unlocker.
I just bought the TP2 Sprint Model, and I use with my new carrier in Mexico: Iusacell...

I had the Touch Pro and now I have had the Touch Pro 2 for about 2 or 3 weeks. I have to tell you the TP and TP2 are NOTHING even in the same class. I think they under stated and down talked the device just calling it a Touch Pro. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Touch Pro but its nothing compared to the Touch Pro 2. Most of the hardware is the same like CPU, GPS and so on. The screen is huge and with a 480x800 rez looks impressive. The new Touch Flow is faster and smoother but has some little bugs. HTC added there own txt program but the wm6.1 txt program seems to have lost some function. For example, simple copy and past is a 12 step program now as before was highlight and go. The TP2 don't look, feel or act anything like the TP did. ohhh and my favorite fix over the TP was the slide out. The TP felt to me like it could break at any second and had lots of slop. The TP2 has 2 points of contact in the slide out and is tight with NO slop or unwanted movement. The tilt screen is cool for show but I don't find any function for it. I have a friend whom tilts every time he text so..... some could find use.

nice :> mine is sitting still wrapped...
Hi folks, you know the drill, my current phone (an HTC Mogul) is getting past it's usefulness and once more I find myself on a hunt to find a phone that has the most of what I do want and the least of what I don't, in other words the best compremise between the device of my dreams and what's actually avaliable.
Further to this I am limited in funds so not only can I not go out and purchase a brand new top of the line model, the device I do end up getting will hopefully last me for a long time (or at least longer then the 1yr I got out of my Mogul).
Perhaps I should start by looking at why my current phone just doesn't do it for me anymore?
1) No wireless - Ever since I flashed it to 6.5 I have had no wifi.
2) No 3.5mm plug - The HTC proprieity adapter hardly works half the time either.
3) OS - 6.5 WiMo flashed is pretty unstable, I regularly have to reset the device because it locks up or just won't work.
4) QVGA - probably the best I can afford, but I do a lot of reading on this and a higher res would be better for my eyes.
5) CDMA - I really need a quadband simcard capable phone.
So what do I want?
1) Wifi, bluetooth, GPS
2) 2mp camera or better
3) 6.5 Wimo native, preferably with duel boot capibility
4) 3.5 or 2.5mm audio output, or HTCusb that actually works!
5) Keyboard if possible (I really like the qwerty thumboard on my Mogul)
6) WVGA or VGA would be nice, but it might be out of my price point.
7) GSM QUADBAND!
Any reccomendations of models would be nice, thankyou
Go for Rhodium!
Definitely the best hardware device out there
If want to spent less money you can try Rapahel or even less (if you find someone who want to sell) Universal
Thanks for the recc, I will check those two out
I agree with ORB you should go for a Rapahel because it has so many roms to flash and it is cheap compared to the latest devices .

Hmm, looking at ebay, the Rhod looks like its about $100 more then the Raph
or $300 for the Touch2 and $210 for the Raph.
At those prices it seems like it would be better just to pay the difference?
Also no one will ship to New Zealand
Yes on that case better go for Rhodium
I have seen ebay sellers who ships to almost any part of the world.
Also have a look on marketplace section, you can find very good deals
Good luck,
UPDATE: I bought myself a HTC Rhodium, very happy with it.
Now, I want to buy my GF a new phone for her birthday. Currenty she is using my ****ty old Blue Angel with WiMo 6.1
She uses the phone everyday (carries it around in her bag), but the only thing she does on it is read. She sometimes sends text messages, but usually not. She hasn't really used any of its other features or installed her own programs or anything (she is a programmer, so she does have the skills to do so).
At the moment I'm tossing up between a HTC Diamond, Diamond 2, Touch HD and another Rhodium. I'm leaning more toward the Diamond1 though. We generally try to avoid spending lots and she's more then happy with the PDA2k so even the diamond is a big upgrade and isn't too expensive.
I use my Rhodium to read alot of comics, but at 480x640 the screen should be highres enough to be an improvement. The other reason I'm leaning toward the Diamond is because of it's small size, and easier for her to carry around.
So, my question: Is there anything wrong with the Diamond that I should consider, and are there any other devices with VGA or better resolution in a similar price range that I should take a look?
Also what is the difference between the Touch Pro and the Diamond (besides the keyboard)?
If you need keyboard go for Raphael, if you donĀ“t need it go for Diamond 2, I buyed one in marketplace for 180US a few months ago.
Or take another Rhodium
Why the recommendations for Rapheal? I am ready to put mine through a wall. The keyboard has gone flaky in the last three months...(delete requires holding down, not just press, P has started to not work, space now triple spaces)
In addition the screen started to separate over the 'x' button about two months back, now I hve that leaky black spot you get when screens break. The control pad at bottom has started to have the plastic cover start to come up.
In the last month the phone has decided to start dropping calls and even losing towers completely. (I have not changed anything on phone in over 6 months) I have rebooted the phone at least 10 times in last three weeks because of screen starting lock up, non-responsive push buttons, and complete lost of tower without attempting to reaquire.
This phone is going tits-up recently and I have had it locked to Edge forever because it will not hold a 3G signal in a very large city.
Not a recommend from me.
Thanks for the reccomendatiom - and the non recccomendation ^_^;
(silly extra text because my message was too short)
Ok, at this stage I am leaning toward the HTC Touch. The touch is fatter, but it looks like it has a lot more memory which has surely got to result in a better user experiance. It's about the same price as a diamond as well - I just have to find someone on here to sell a raphael to me.
I have a moderately worn Tmo Touch Pro 2 I'm selling off on ebay later today. Only doing a 3 day auction starting at $0.99. If interested I'll post a link. Pics are great of the scratches so you can probably grab it for $125-$150.
a link sounds good

What where the main issues you had with it?
I've just upgraded from my mogul to the touch2, and the main issue I had with the mogul was the low res and slow processor compared to the touch 2, but overall it was a good phone.
NEED ANDROID PHONE WITH Qwerty keyboard
I'm looking for a new phone to replace my aging G1 but I dont want to give up the real keyboard. The mytouch slide is nice but it's hardware isn't on par with nexus one or htc incredible. The new Samsung Galaxy S Pro with sprint seems promising but not so sure about community support. I love how with my G1 I have so many options, so many great ROMs from Cyanogen and others on XDA. I'm worried that If I go with a samsung I will have better hardware but very few choices when it comes to moded roms. Is there an alternative phone out there with hardware on par with the latest HTC phones that have a slide out keyboard. Any one care to offer thier opinions??
whats your budget?
android or wimo?
What is currently the most powerful windows mobile based phone on the market, and are there any new models advertised for release with windows 7 I should be waiting for instead?
Available now: Leo definitely
Leo if you like bigass touchscreens, also has snapdragon so it is defitely going to be fast, otherwise rodium if you like hardware keyboards.
As for Windows Phone 7, nothing at the moment.
Thank you for the advice. I already have the Rhodium and it really has never failed to impress me with what it can do.
Unfortunately Telus up here in Canada are crappy for what phones we can get so I wouldn't be able to get the leo anyway, and i really like having a physical keyboard.

Then check out an HD2. Its like a Rhodium on roids and meth. I went from a Rhodium to a HD2 so I know the differences. I was a lil worried about the no keyboard thing but I kept my Rhodium and got hte HD2 second hand for cheap so I could always sell one. The first day I was happy but still unsure, you can't use a stylus, but the touch screen is way way way way way superior to the Rhodiums so it actually worked like it should in finger touch mode. I practiced the onscreen kb a day ran some apps and watched some 2GB xvid movies and and was sold 110% on the HD2. Then a week later I discovered swype on it, and OMG the KB isn't an issue at all. You can go so so much faster on swype then on the traditional KB I'd never go back. One issue is battery life. It isn't as good but it does seem to be the best of the 1GHZ phones with stock battery. I can easily go a day may be two with out a charge listening to a couple hours of streaming 3g music a day and checking my email, updating weather, etc... I say take the plunge if your a WM guy, its a hell of an upgrade from a Rhodium. Oh and its slim as hell, easy in the pocket.
