Used the goldcard method and stuck the sappimg.zip from the AUS ROM update to flash my Airtel HTC Magic. Worked flawlessly.
SPL: 1.33.0010
Build number: 2.16.720.2
Got all google apps and market! I can now die happy! Not yet tried rooting it or flashing the engg SPL.
I want to have some fun before I brick the phone!
Procedure was really simple:
1. Create goldcard (see other thread for how to do this)
2. Copy rom.zip from AUS ROM to sappimg.zip on SD card
3. Start in HBOOT and update
AUS ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547490
Superb
Thats a great great news man.
You did it.
Can you tell us if the updated Aus ROM is also locked. I mean can you get root access and will it allow fastboot remote so that you can flash further ROMs.
Good for you! We have 2.53.707.2 build number, so still no go (main version older). Google apps and market is all we need, can anybody please help?
Can someone please upload the AUS rom?
Please? I would like to get this rom even on rapidshare or even slowshare or inbetweenshare. The links take us back to the announce page that someone posted.

Bro, you're my man, man...!!!!! I've got the same build number as yours. Can you please post a n00b friendly guide? Please, man. Until I saw your post I was feeling like I was stuck with a 28 grand worth of piece of ****, man. Seriously. And did you try rooting the phone? Flash the SPL to a non-perfect SPL, perhaps? If you have, please post a guide, dude. I will be really grateful. And also, I'm stuck at the 'making the Gold Card' procedure. Coz you know the phone doesn't come with Android Market, so no terminal. But I do believe there's an alternate way of doing it by ADB. Help me out, bro......
can somebody tell....if two sd cards are reqd or it is one card - converted to gold card and with sappimg on it.....????

I follow the gold card creation instructions to the letter and it worked out of the box. I used a transcend 8gb SD card.
For A built number 2.53.702.2 we need a higher ROM version..

Can you guys share some screen shots of the new UI?
And apart from Market do you also get Gtalk, Google maps..?
What about previous goodies from HTC like Microsoft Exchange, Smart Dialer, Pdf viewer... are all those present in the AU version of ROM?

All the stuff is present in the ROM (exchange, smart dial, pdf, quickoffice) + Google apps (maps, talk, gmail). Couldn't find youtube though.

OK just spent a significant amount of time reading your forums and im nearly there just wanted some clarification on rooting and choice of roms for a UK Vodafone Magic as there doesnt seem to be one collection of advice for UK voda's. Here's how I think it goes please correct me!!
1. Root using haykuro’s method and files in the wiki. (Did read a post about uk voda users then having to flash a rom because reboot didnt work fully.)
2. Update the SPL according to the same wiki article. This is where its hazy!!! I am now left with a rooted magic with stock rom, (ie uk voda in my case.) an updated spl, allowing me to now do a full nandroid backup of stock rom or only a backup of installed apps only???? See where im getting confused??
If I then choose to not flash a rom to my Magic I am now running my stock rom (or a haykuro rom.) but with the added bonus of it being rooted, which in-turn allows me to run those useful apps available in the store, bluex, setCPU etc???????

You and me both I'm in exactly the same situation as you, with the same decisions to make and same questions. I personally wouldn't mind installing a stock ION rom (or maybe the Japanese version since I speak English/Japanese) but essentially would like to know what you would like to know! Before I change my SPL though, I'd like to know if I can back it up.

I haven't rooted mine yet either.
As a vetran of WMO I am a bit confused, but basically I think you can't root and keep your original Vodafone rom.
To do this, someone would have had to have produced a rooted version of this rom and no one has.
you can install the latest generic ion rom rooted.
if you want to go back to vodafone you'll have to find the rom.
The other annoying thing is that you can't do a rom backup without rooting it .... duh!
if I am wrong, someone please correct me!!
As i feared!! so the rom for rooting your magic also replaces the system with the haykuro ion rom. So as yet there is now way of keeping/backing up the original voda uk magic rom. (To revert back to at a later stage or if you f**k it up!!)
So this now leaves us uk voda magic users with the question which rom to go for which has the same functions as the uk voda rom. Ive read about the main ones ion r3 lite, nk02s htc beta 3, the rodgers and most recently the hero rom. Sounds like the community is really geting going!!
I am looking for :
1. wifi
2. bluetooth
3. 3G
4. Google sync
5. camera (as ive heard some roms dont support it.)
6. market (once again some roms with problems.)
7. superuser (obviously.)
8. Location
9. Voice is a bonus but not essential as uk voda does not have it
OK so i want it all lol, So far the Ion r3-lite looks the most suited but i cannot confirm the camera works so come on you clever ppl help us uk voda's out!!
Thx

but it appears you need to root before nandroid
and to successfully root, you need to install ion, otherwise it won't boot
isn't this catch 22 ?
Thanks Brian im probably going to give it a go tomorrow and go with the ion r3 lite rom to start!!
But once again to clarify you just pointed me to a link showing howto back up the rom by using the updated spl and nandroid backup function, to do this your magic must already be rooted and as you stated earlier by rooting the magic you will therefore replaced the vodafone rom with the ion rom. So a backup at this stage would be of the ion rom and not the stock vodafone rom. Am I correct???
If I get stuck i will be sure to take you up on your offer or further help. Thx

rooting your magic does not replace the user interface bit of the rom. You can root it without going to ION or anything else

OK colonel so you have a success you followed the guide at " http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting "
................and didn't have a problem at the reboot command?? (So no need to revert to the follow on guide at " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524925 " which would mean having to replace the standard voda rom.)
So you now have a rooted uk voda magic running on the original rom?? As well as a backup of the original rom, meaning that you can now flash custom roms to your hearts content with the reassurance of being able to flash back to the original voda rom if you should wish.

indeed - exactly as you say
I had no issue with the rebooting problem mentioned elsewhere
although I don't intend on running a custom rom yet.
I did it purely to get root access, inititially to follow superxnova's excellent guide to get other language fonts (I wanted hebrew):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480964
** Make sure you select the option to make a backup after the command typed in step 11 **
One other thing I would say, the instructions are precise until step 14&15
instead of doing step 14 & 15 I went into fastboot mode by - step 10 (then back button), typed the command in step 11,then pressed update. After update i selected reboot.
not sure if that made any difference as "home + power" does the same thing
3g Gone
Hi - i've managed to root today and to install the new some new roms - thanks to all of the wonderful advice here. One thing I have noticed is that I lose my 3g capability with any rom apart from my original vodafone rom. I'm not too bothered as I can restore from a nandroid backup. Would be nice to be able to use the SuperHero v2 build i've currently got working (apart from the 3g).
Thx.

you probably need to refresh the apn
do some searching to find out how
I have to say, i am not in a rush to change the vodafone rom
its pretty fast and unbranded.
When I had a winmo I was keen to get a new rom for speed and newer builds/features, but don't really feel the need now
perhaps i will later!
How 2 Root 1.33.0006 SPL & Flash SPL || MyTouch3G / 32B Magic || Without Goldcard ||
Tutorial : Rooting the "perfect" 1.33.0006 SPL & Flashing a new SPL
Newb Difficulty Level: 5/10 (A learning android newb)
Advanced Root User Difficulty Level: EASY!
GIVE CREDIT WHEN ITS DUE!
Note to readers:
I actually found a easy fix for 1.33.0006 for 32B Magic or MYTouch3G phones
KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM USING A MERLOT MYTOUCH3G, Stock 4GB SD card & BROKEN "Market" Application SO MAKE SURE YOUR DOWNLOADING THE FILES THAT WORK BEST FOR YOUR DEVICE and I am only providing steps used to bypass the "PERFECT SPL 1.33.0006" & YOUR RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESULT OF YOUR DEVICE!
FILES I USED:
*ADB is a MUST so make sure to watch this video to safely install ADB
(NOTE: The video is using 1.6 donut spk... the steps are the same but use the 1.5 r3 spk on the same page given on the video.)
*flashrec-20090815.apk
MAKE SURE YOU USE THIS VERSION...!
* "Rooted" Recovery Image
I am using Amon_Ra's recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3G which in my opinion is the best as it has flashed every rom perfectly if you know what your doing but it depends on what rom you will be flashing in some cases.
* A NEW SPL!
I am currently using Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2009-signed by Amon_RA (BIG UPs TO Amon_RA for these files) on my T-Mo MyTouch3G but it depends on your device.
NOW TO WORK!
Step One - Enable USB Debug/Development Mode:
*Load up your device till you reach your home screen. Once your device is up and running hold menu and go to settings>applications>development then enable "USB Debugging" then press home & plug the device up to your PC & DONT MOUNT.
Step Two - Install Recovery Image Loader via ADB:
*Open CMD and as the video above stated you must navigate to your ADB folder. Once that is done you should install flashrec-20090815.apk (Recovery Image Loader) though CMD by placing it on both your SDCARD & the ADB Tools Folder (For me its C:\android\tools\).
~Now type these commands within CMD:
cd c:\android\tools (press enter)
adb install flashrec-20090815.apk (press enter)
*Now you have installed Recovery Image Loader and you may now close CMD but dont restart your device
Step Three - Rooting the unrootable (Sorta):
*Now find your recovery image ( Example : Recovery-RA-Magic-v1.2.3G.img or Recovery.img). Once found rename it as "cm-recovery-1.4.img"! Save this file to the root of your SDcard & delete the "flashrec-20090815.apk". now press backup recovery image and wait till its done (quick 2secs) then erase everything but "cm-recovery-1.4.img" within the text box. Now type " /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img ". Now press FLASH RECOVERY IMAGE and wait till its done. Once its done restart the device and be aware that you will lose everything that isnt saved to your google account or backed up to your PC.
SMART COMMENT: WOW DID I JUST ROOT THE UNROOTABLE? I guess I did lol
Step Four - Change SPL to Prevent this issue in the future:
*Move the SPL ( & the ROM if you want to start installing it right away ) you downloaded earlier to your SD card and delete everything else if you want. Now select "WIPE/FACTORY SETTINGS" and follow on screen instructions and then do this a additional 2 times to be safe. Now flash the SPL and once it starts to reboot on its own (after it shows the picture of a box and a device) hold the home button and then FLASH YOUR ROM
THATS IT! YOUR DONE AND YES I DID SHOW YOU HOW TO ROOT 1.33.0006 but it doesnt run properly so make sure you flashed a new SPL before flashing any new "Radio" or "ROM" images or you could brick your device.
HOPE THIS HELPED MANY WHO HAD PROBLEMS ROOTING THE DEVICE!
isn't this just the same as the one click root? cuz on the one click root you don't need adb. It just seems like you are adding necessary steps to it. Please correct me if I am wrong. I don't mean to bash your work by any means.
I don't see why no one else has congratulated you on compiling one of these for those people that might eventually NEED THIS GUIDE! Lol.
Great work. Simple.
I had the "perfected SPL" when I picked up my MT3G on the release date. Pretty unfortunate...but I rooted it like two days later. Lol.
I never got an answer in the other SPL thread so here it goes...
Can we safely go from one SPL to another?? The reason I ask is I have the problem with the blurry screen at boot but I only encountered it when I flashed a new SPL. Now I have read up on it & it looks like some people running the same ROM with different SPL's don't have the blurry screen.
Seeing how so many people had problems bricking with haykuro's DangerSPL, the SPL is something I don't wanna mess with unless I have a definate answer. So anyone wanna chime in on this?

Hello there, thanks for the guide.
I try to follow your guide to root my HTC Magic and I have some questions.
1. I run the command "adb install flashrec-20090815.apk " and it installed the flashrec to "/data/local/tmp" directory. Is this correct?
2. I copied the recovery image to the sd card and insert into the phone. then based on you guide. I should delete the flashrec I installed while ago. But I cannot delete the file. Can you give us more details regarding this one? Thanks.
3. Sorry but I have some hard time to sollow the step three. Can you give us more details about this.
thank you and good day
Steven

However, after reading this post I decided to give it a try. I booted into recovery mode/ wiped and then flash 1.33.2009 SPL. It loaded and rebooted into recovery again. I then wiped and loaded a ROM. everything is fine.
Later I checked and I now have 1.33.2009 SPL the perfect SPL 1.33.0006 is gone.
so im on a rooted mt3g, i have been running different roms, cyan, hero, dwang, i am at dwang 1.13. so to flash the 1.33.2009 spl do i have to wipe and flash to dwang 1.12 then flash the spl then dwang 1.13?
also what are the advantages/disadvantage?
which spl should i use?
thanks
Hi
I have 1.33.0004 on my 32B Sapphire and Android 1.6. Will this method help me root my phone? If not then is there an easy way to root my phone?
Thanks in advance
Hello all,
Here is my situation.
I was happily using a Hero rom on my HTC branded Magic 32A.
I thought that the new update from HTC would have the Sense interface so I updated, hopping that Bluetooth would finally work. And it does.
But, now I can't root and I can't downgrade to the previous update.
Anyone with a similar problem?
Thanks in advance.
Andre

Same problem here !
I've tried searching EVERYWHERE for some answers, but I can't find any help.
Please, say if you find out !
I also have a swiss magic and i also updated to the new official firmware. Since there are now new sense roms with working bluetooth (such as Hofo 3.0.3) just flash to one of those if you installed a recovery (either amon ra's or cyanogen's) and if you don't have a recovery use flashrec which can flash a recovery rom even with a perfect spl which comes with this update.

can't flash or anything, just get's errors ...
it seems like the recovery is still there, but it's no use, and I can't get a new recovery img. Nothing works :S can't unroot or root a new rom :S
I've tried as well, no good. Why did HTC bother with an update without the new Sense UI . . . I'm starting to wonder how incompetent they are
What spl do you have now?

Good. Make a goldcard and flash a engineering SPL or 1.33.0009. I can confirm that it will work!
Thanks! That DID work! Good to have you all around . . . . !
Cheers.
the update in canada a couple months ago gave us the perfect spl 1.33.0010 from 1.33.0009 so what i do now is go to unlockr.com and use the 1 click root method for htc magic then i add my hero roms
Can you please tell us what SDCard you are using?
I tried already 10+ cards, but after writing the goldcard image to offset 000 - 170 on the SDCard, Windows (as well as the phone) does not recognize the card anymore.
I think the cid is unique by the card, not by the phone. Correct?
--> Could I use a goldcard that was created by someone else?

No you couldnt, the CID is taken from your phone and plotted into the card. You need to create one for YOUR phone.
When creating the card, are you sure you are saving to physical drives and not logical?
I have tried with many SanDisk but the only one that worked is a Kensington 4GB. Also, and i'm not sure if that did do anything, but while downgrading, press the action key ( the track ball ). Good luck.

no, you are wrong, it's the cid for the sd card not from the phone, u can read the cid code de sd card by any linux os. and the goldcard can be used for any htc magic. i have two magic, one from TIM another from Singapore, and they are all flashed into the official taiwan sense rom by the same glodcard.
which image do you put into your goldcard?

Where did u get it?
Can you tell me a little bit more what you did after you have created a Goldcard?
Because most of the people stuck with the perfected SPL after upgrading from HTC.
Thanks.

Ahhhhhhhh! #%&$# !
Thank you Eskibo - I was always opening the cards as logical drives!
I just tried again as physical drive and already the first card worked fine.
hi to all!
i have an HTC MAGIC VODAFONE (32B) with donut 1.6 + perfect spl.
ROM - Build CRC24
SPL - 1.33.0007 (perfect SPL)
please somebody give to me te sappimg for this device, i cannot root it without normal metod, i need to create a goldcard
Solution: Return the phone if you can. If not then sell it. Get rid of it. I had one and at the moment you can do NOTHING to it. Buy a cheap 32A model on eBay. I am buying a factory unlocked 288MB RAM 32A model for 239 GBP.
Look for the goldcard method... I'm not sure if will work on a 32B device but you can do a search for more info...
it is possible to change the 1.5 version to 1.6?
i mean, if i try to downgrade from 1.6 to 1.5 it says "you cannot do this" so my idea is:
take cupcake rom, change version number from 1.5 to 1.6 and flash!
is this possible?
wow, erm, NO.
i solved this problem
I met exactly problem with you.
I solved it. now, my phone is spl2010 off, I can root it with any rom now!
There is no sappimg for G2 32B itself. you can just use the one for 32A.
Then rewrite radio, recovery, system, flash1, boot, through fastboot.
I love the please somebody give me... even if translated.
A simple search would have found your answer alot quicker then waiting in a forum for one. Look for Amon ras perfected SPL fix rom. make a goldcard, rename file to Sappimg.img and go through. but I doubt you have any idea what im talking about

Do u by chance have the link for 32a sappimg
Everything you need is right here!
This will take you to the Unlockr's site with every file and step-by-step instructions as to how to go through the gold card method. I can attest that it does work on 32B's. I went from 1.33.0007 to 1.33.2005 using his method. It took me awhile since I'm kind of a noob at this stuff but it worked great. Since then I've run CM 4.2.14.1, st0kes 2.1 v1.3.2, as well as Super D 1.9.2. Also was able to change the boot splash to a custom image by following those instructions and doing a little research too!
Hope this helps!

HTC has posted the Donut RUU for Dutch Vodafone HTC Magics (32B). This rom was previously only available as OTA update.
Click here to download Dutch update.
Click here to download the UK update
Click here for the Italian update
WARNING: Updating to this rom will erase your device completely, including custom recovery and leave you with a perfected SPL! Please wait till someone roots this rom if you don't want to get stuck with a perfected SPL!
Enjoy!
PS. Would be nice to see this being ported to 32A ;-)
same as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639405
Yes...
Seems that HTC has released this rom for different countries (version):
Germany:1.91.162.1; Italy:1.91.165.1 ; United Kingdom :1.91.161.1 ; Switzerland-German :1.91.166.1 ; Netherlands:1.91.172.1 ; Spain:1.91.164.1 ; France:1.91.163.1 ; Austria:1.91.177.1
And I think all Magic (A/B) upgrades belong in the Sapphire forums, not in the G1 forums ;-)

My gf has a Vodafone Magic UK, they post an RUU.exe which only works with HTC sync, voda UK magics have no HTC sync...
I have also posted in the G1 forum, and my best solution seems to be to flash a rogers rom, then update...
Anyone got a simpler solution? I have tried upping the PCSII.apk (or what ever its called) to the phone, and it just FC's..
I'm not concerned about losing root, my gf just wants a stable phone!
I found some instructions to install it without HTC Sync:
Code:
- Download and run the RUU executable
- When the wizard is at step 1, open a file search dialog
- Look for a file named [B]rom.nbh[/B] (should be in [B]%temp%[/B] folder)
- Copy the rom.nbh to another folder and rename it to [B]SAPPIMG.NBH[/B]
- Close the wizard
- Copy the sappimg.nbh to the root of your SDCard
- Power down your phone
- Boot your phone while pressing "volume down"
- It will ask you to update (wait a bit till the question pops up)
- Press trackball to start update
- After update press trackball again to reboot
Pay attention before installing it. The Italian update installs a perfect SPL!

I did this.. not knowing it would unroot me en install a perfect spl haha. that sucked.
It is still fixable with the goldcard method and a higher rom SPL.
After that you can downgrade the radio to the new 2.22.23.02
see my sig for links, I can't post em yet, since I'm a newbie.

And how exactly did you manage to miss the BIG RED WARNING SIGN in the first post?
Did you use the HTC Sync or SAPPIMG method?

RECOVERY RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G
The HTC german page says that it's an update for HTC HERO ROM, so it should come with Sense UI, right? (http://www.htc.com/de/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=246&cat=2&dl_id=882)
Nevertheless, I have my 32B Magic rooted, so I don't want to unroot it. Is there anyway of putting this ROM version without losing the root and recovery? Or do we have to someone unroot the ROM and put it available in the forums?
Tnx
If you want root it would be better to wait until someone roots this stock rom.
You could also browse the Dream development forums for a rooted version, maybe it's already available there.
Did anyone root this stock rom? I want to try other mods :/
uk link is dead? i need to un root my phone back to vodafone android 1.6 is there another link?
I could do with a stock rom for vodafone magic aswell... acquired a phone with no nandroid backup and cyan 5.0.8 is not playing nice
