Okay, I used a G1 since October 20th, and rooted a few months later when I felt the process was easy enough and could be reversed. I'm not sure how long it'll take on the myTouch, but I'm thinking I'll wait and keep my G1 by my side for Tethering purposes, only because I'm scared to death of breaking the ROM. I mean, we don't even have the original ROM do we? Or at least the SAPPIMG.NBH with all of the myTouch factory software on it? The DREAIMG.NBH used to get back to RC29 was a life saver whenever I goofed things up on my G1. I'd just reflash it from the phone, on the road, and then could do all the rooting on the device. The biggest problem I'm running into is that I'm stuck on a 4 yr old iBook G4, so making the goldcard is going to be weird. I'll probably have to find a way to do it through MS VirtualPC with Windows XP and turn on USB pass-through. Any ideas?
Does anyone know of a way to backup the myTouch ROM before digging in too deep? I love nandroid's capabilities, and the cyanogen recovery 1.4 is of GREAT use on my G1, is it compatible with the myTouch? I'm sure some of this is available by digging through the threads, but this computer's 800x600 screen size is KILLING me (the laptop display cracked, so I'm stuck on an external monitor, and maximum output is 800x600)
Plus, if I have to do any exchanges, it's best to keep everything at factory before sending it in. And I will definitely need to do that should I have any problems. So a factory SAPPIMG would be great. Know how to get ahold of one? Anyone?
Wow, 85 reads, no replies rather surprised, but a regular search on Google for the MyTouch SAPPIMG ROM pulled up a page here on xda...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533641
Is this REALLY the myTouch ROM? even if it's the one from before the "Work Email" app came as an OTA (COC1 is the build) that'd be fine, the phone will pull that later on and I don't use it anyway...
Any ideas on whether or not this particular "update.zip" style ROM will refresh me back if i get in a bind and break android? I'm putting some hope on it. According to what's in the rooting thread, the ION's radio ROM is the same as the myTouch's shipping radio, right? Other than that, the SPL is the only other thing that'd need replaced before doing a warranty exchange, so that's all that's left to "unroot" the device. Anyone have access to that, or have a way to dump it?
Allong the same line as this... I am in Japan on a DOCOMO HT-03. Doubt there is a rom avail around here... I havent gotten in to the rooting yet.. But can i use nandroid to creat a back up of my own(with all of my settings).. Or even Extract the orignal rom, to post here as a repository for anyone else...

I think this might have been covered before
Got a Wizard here that came with WM5 from o2 a few years back, its a work phone so doesnt get a massive amount of hammer but its slow, dead slow.
I just want something really small and quick, phones always on charge unless I'm out and about which isnt that much so perhaps oc'ing it might help?
I downloaded a WM6 rom by mfrazz (5.2.318(15342.4.0.01)) about a year ago and yes it looks nice and does more than the Wm5 that was on the phone to start with, but its irritatingly slow, I'm using the phone more than I was originally so it makes speed more of an issue.
I tried to flash a rom called "Wizard_19855_Clean_V1" but now I seem to have lost the phones ability to find a service.
The phones not bricked so I presume all is not lost but a quick shove in the right direction would be appreciated, the other option of course is to stick WM5 back on it if someone has a link to the latest (last?) o2 WM5 rom, then drop it down the stairs or something and get a new work phone perhaps
Nevermind, almost perfectly timed, 83% through flashing the phone with the 6r5 rom from Mfrazzz we've just had a power cut...
So, what do people recommend as a replacement to a bricked Wizard lol...
it is not dead. can be revived. well, if you want it to be.
get your power turned back on, then put it in bootloader after charging it completely and flash again.
I can get the bootloader RGB screen, have tried the solution here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276963 but get the "You didn't get the proper security level to download a specific image" error, just trying to sort that out now, phones on charge while I dig out the solution to that now, something to do with it being locked seems to be the problem, will see how far I get and then try again..
38% thru reflashing with the Update Utility File thing...
See if we can keep power in the building this time
Right, were back on WM5 thanks to the Wizard Love rom, when I try to stick mfrazzz's 6r5 on tho it gets to 99% and then fails, have tried it a few times now but with the same results..
try a release like amp(linkage) or a tnt thats known for speed. Ive been using amp's newer release for months on att's network, with strong service and considerable speed boosts over the older faria/mrfrazz roms i used
i have yet to need to oc this amp build but was a pretty avid overclocker of my older ones.
ps: im prolly going to cook/flash this rom when release 2 comes out(hopefully tonight) cleaner slate than amp
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=415157
pss: if you're not.. try flashing with no sd card too
Yeah not got the SD in there when flashing, I've tried a few different ROMs now and it looks like I missing something as it still appears to be on the Wizard Love WM5 rom even though I'm trying to get it up a WM6 rom (Brightrom/Manilla UI/XM6r5)..
Will try the one you've linked too and see how that goes..
Somethings not right here, I've gotta be doing something wrong, usign shell tool it tells me that the Wizard Love rom has the following.
Externsion ROM
OS
GSM
Splash Screen
HTC Logo
Yet the other rom's I've been trying only appear to be the OS, and even though they seem to be uploading to the phone properly when i reset it it still has the Wizard Love rom on it..
First things first, I've been in the wireless industry since 2002, but I've never attempted a phone hack in my life. I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux, and the furthest I've gotten with phone customization is some stock BB theme for my 8130.
I needed a new handset, and since I'm in the industry anyway, I decided I needed to keep current on Andriod, since I had a feeling it was going to be huge. So I trekked on down to my local T-mo store and picked up the white model.
Last night, I decided to see if I could get the g1 to tether one of our test laptops. While I wasn't exactly successful, the threads that lead me here (and to other areas) made me aware of just what this phone was capable once you re-attached it's gonads.
Long story short, in a few "short" hours, I'd downgraded to rc29, rooted my device, reflashed to RC30, and am a happy camper. The results are in my sig.
If you're overwhelmed by the mass of information regarding these processes: don't be. Just keep reading this forum, the instructions are clear but to a neophyte like myself (and you) it'll be confusing.
Keep trying, you won't be disappointed.

Congrats!
Make sure you read up on moving over the caches and how to install apps to the sd card. It's all well worth the effort and rewarding in the end.

Already on it, I'm just to busy to do much of it at work.

Congrats.
I was in the same boat as you when I got my first smart phone, TMo Wing (Herald). It was daunting when I first started reading here and you're literally blasted in the face with loads of information but with patience and lots of reading it became clear.
Yeah i second that the people here are great, they make the most complex hacks doable by ordinary people. I believe that no one should have a non-rooted G1.
dont forget to check out the new RC30 v1.41 from JF that includes Multi Touch and some other goodies.
I agree. I'm not a complete noobie, but I'm far from experienced in this kind of thing. Multitouch is really cool!
The only problem I'm having is that when I downgraded to RC29, I lost my Wifi connections. I enable Wifi, and I don't get the Wifi symbol any more. It sees my wifi, but when I type my password in correctly, it says it can't connect. My connection has always worked flawlessly before. It really stinks, because cellphone signals are really bad here, and I can't even browse the market anymore.
edit: Boy, am I dumb, I forgot I changed my router password. Duhhh!!! Wifi connects now!
Haha yea I agree its kind of overwhelming when you start reading these forums. I rooted my G1 a little over 24 hours ago and was kind of nervous thru the entire process and i'm a unix / linux administrator. I really haven't had much experience working with Linux on embedded devices.
I haven't bothered much with the themes yet. I'm planning on rolling my own android image or keeping it up to date with the dev branch.
The sky is the limit =)
First timer here as well. Took me a little under 1hr. The longest part was formatting my 8gb sdhc card.
Love the multi touch and task manager so far. Can't wait to hack some more stuff.
Glad to hear stories similar to mine. I posted this in the hopes that other newbies like myself would read it and take heart. You seriously do NOT want to be using this device with the stock T-mo rom.

A co-worker of mine that works in another department got a G1 as well. I almost feel sorry for him since I know he's gotta be running the stock RC30 since I know he's not tech savvy at all.
I am having all kinds of trouble getting mine hacked. I got down to rc29 fine and than I have got the update for rc30 jf 1.3.1 rom saved on my sd card but i cannot get it to update on my phone. I reboot by holding home and power and than I hit alt+L Alt+S and it won't update

Wait a hot minute. You want to go to Dream Development Thread and download the Jf update ver 1.41. You then save it on sd card but rename the entire zip file to update.
P.S. Make sure you have Jf's recovery image and if this just sounds like crazy talk then look at this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480

Hi all,
I've just got an T-Mobile G1 and I would like to turn it to the Dev version with the modified RC30.
After going around these informative threads, I'm getting confused now
I would like to have a rooted G1 with HardSPL and JF v1.41 image. Are those steps correct to obtain such aim?
1. Downgrading to RC29 and rooting my device
2. Installing HardSPL (file for RC30). Now, is my G1 considered ADP1.1? Can I install any image without losing the root?
3. Reflashing to JF 1.41. Which image should I use now (ADP1.1 or RC30)?
It's kinda new thing for me but this thread of ninetoes did give me some encouragement. I'm eager to try it. Please kindly give me some advises
So anyone gives me an advice please!

than help spread the love
well i have had this phone for a reallly long time, its gone through quite a few cooks and is currently sitting on ttrans manilla 2d i think (i have since gotten the g1 and moved on but gave it to my girlfriend). Well its acting up pretty badly and i was wanting to format the sdcard, format the main phone itself and return back to WM6.1 with battery status installed to scale the processor and to make everything back working smoothly for her (including txt and mms since it hasnt been sending pictures now, not to mention a complete bug where she couldnt answer the phone for over a week due to the screen freezing and it needing the sliding to answer)
APN = T-Mobile
Phone = Tmobile "Wing"
(I know that 6.1 didnt come on the phone originally but i cannot seem to find any rom for it or the proper flashing procedure to revert it back without bricking it. Im almost positive its been hardspl'd but its been a while so im not sure)
If it's hardSPL'd, just followed the guidelines posted in the thread.
It has been posted before that if you use the tmobile NBH with USPL, it would bring the phone back to the default configuration. I have tried it myself and it worked fine, too.
ive looked for these threads and couldnt find them. Honestly not even sure what those two you mentioned are (sorry its been a while, been involved in the sapphire port to the g1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364543
So you've been involved with the H builds?
I used to own a T-Mobile G1 with android 1.6. I got bored over time, and decided to try cyanogenmod. But that was back when I was an inexperienced ROM hacker. I did all the rooting stuff and flashing stuff right. Or so I thought. Anyway, my phone ended up bricked, and now I have an expensive paper-weight. I have a myTouch 3G now. Is it possible to somehow use my new 4GB SD card to get the files for Donut back on the phone? My laptop can only read the larger versions of SD cards(for cameras, etc.) and I don't have anything that can read the smaller ones. I can only hook my myTouch up to my computer to get files on it.
If you can't boot into recovery or fastboot, you can't save the phone. The only way is to try the JTAG thing and it should work. I don't know how far along they got because after I bought my Nexus I stopped looking at that section. But I know someone got it to work after an SPL brick.
Basically my girlfriends evo shift has pretty much bitten the dust, the backlight on the screen only works sporadically and i really don't want to fuss with trying to replace the cable, I just want to return it to sprint and get a replacement handset for her ( I know it's EOL but we can't upgrade till next year hoping replacement wont cost too much). I've been cruising the forums as well as google, trying to find a way to get it back to stock from CM7, I have read all the forum threads about how to do it I'm just having a couple issues.
1. none of the links for the ruus or roms seem to work anymore, I'm not being able to reach multiupload, don't know if its the firewall here or if the site is just buggered, anyone have an alternative d/l site?
2. HTC sync can't find the phone, windows definitely finds it ok, but htc sync says no device is connected, any thoughts?
I'd appreciate any help/thoughts anyone might have, I have full protection on our handsets so if there might even be a way to just bypass this and get sprint to replace the handset, I'd be fine with that too, I've got her info backed up so I'm rearin to get this thing done.
* weird side note, we replaced her handset last year on the 11th of April going from palm pre to the shift because her pre's keyboard stopped working, she may be annually cursed..
*I failed and writing failed...
Here's the PG06IMG.zip ruu. Just put it on the root of your sd and boot into bootloader. This is the 2.2 ruu http://db.tt/l36imqH1
