Web browser woes... I need some help. - General Topics

Alright... Here's the low-down. I'm using an AT&T Fuze with the updated official ROM. I am having more problems with web browsing than I ever had with my old device...
Opera Mobile: Randomly refuses to load images. I just get the empty box that says 'image' at the top. Reloading does nothing and the context menu doesn't appear. And when images DO load and I want to save them, I'm forced to save them in a folder on the root of either my device or storage card (i.e.: "/storage card/temp" but not "/storage card/temp/images") and am forced to go in later and organize the files into the correct sub-folders. Plus, I can't set the default save location to the storage card, so I have to change THAT every time I try to save an image, too.
Opera Mini: With the stock Esmertec Jbed, Opera Mini isn't allowed to save or read files from my device. Way to go, AT&T. We appreciate you trying to protect people from themselves, but you guys suck. I tried downloading another version of Esmertec Jbed from the forum here and OM is able to save images, but half the time they don't display fully (I get the blank squares that OM likes to use as place-holders while it loads the image). That, and OM locks up with that modified Jbed...
Skyfire: Promising, but why can't I disable javascript? I keep getting popups that are obstructing the screen and I can't get rid of. That, and it seems to be overly sensitive to screen taps. ("No, I didn't click on that! Go back! GAH! Stupid popups!")
IE: Well, it shows images that Opera Mobile refuses to, it lets me save those images when Opera Mini won't even think about it and, as opposed to Skyfire, it gives me no option to ENABLE javascript. It does, however, throw up all over itself if you try to view a page that wasn't designed for a mobile browser. Sometimes it even locks up as a result...
Which brings me to my question for you fine folks. Can anyone offer a solution or fix for ANY of the above problems? Any one of these browsers would be fantastic, if not for its crippling flaw. I've read a little on this NetFront browser, but I don't know how I feel about PAYING for yet another browser.
Oh, and MiniMo/Fennec drags my device to a crawl, so that's no good...

You could try Iris Browser: no flash support but it a good browser.
D'rath
PS: FEnnec is an alpha version

Thanks, D'rath! Iris works WONDERFULLY! All the nice things that Opera offers (tabs, 'flick' scrolling, accelerometer screen tilt) and it actually displays the images I ask for!

[POLL]Opera Mini or Opera Mobile????[ONLINE]

Hello,
Just wondering which browser is better
Opera Mini - http://www.operamini.com/
Or
Opera Mobile - http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/
Or
Opera Mobile HTC Diamond Version -(Not Sure If I Can Post Link So I Just Wont)
Im Not Sure If There's Even A Difference With The Diamond Version And The One On The Opera Website but I thought I go ahead and ask??
What Is The Difference In The Two or Three
I Really Like Opera Mini The Pages Load Up Really Fast - and I only have the T-mobile 5.99 internet plan
But Which One Is Better???
Thanks
Opera 9.5 Beta Rocks!!
i have tried all the diff diamond versions available. They all come down to one thing. Proper performance stability is not there. Opera Diamond crashes now and then on extensive browsing.
But not since i started using Opera 9.5 Beta. Its really stable and i must say optimised for other devices.
I even changed the Opera 9.5 Beta.lnk to Opera 9.5 so i dont see the beta. keke
Opera mini....never really was a big fan of those Java apps...atleast not on me htc
I found page rendering poor on Opera 9.5, Had to scroll to see the whole page, fonts seemed to be out of proportion. So I kept Opera 9.5 on my Universal and gave up on it altogether on my Elf.

on the contrary, i found the 9.5 beta page rendering to be very smooth and fonts are all in proportion. i never use Opera over gprs, always on wifi. cud that be ur problem i wonder?
Mini - but you need to work on it!
I use mini all the time - I've just gone back to my elf after trying out kaisers and nikes for a couple of months... The speed of mini means that you get the same performance without 3G!
I've got a shortcut to Mini, so that I can launch it from an icon or menu without loading java first, and a script that makles it work with url links from emails.
Important though is what version you get - if you get the default, you get an unsigned version, and prompted to allow web access every time you launch - big nono... so go to mini.opera.com on your phone, then select download an older or alternative version, and you get the option to download a signed version, which you can trhen use without being prompted every time.
Done this way, mini works brilliantly.

I tried The beta Its OK But, I Still Like The Mini Its Alot Faster Loads My Pages In Seconds (On GPRS)
How did you get the shortcut I've been wanting to do the same thing -
Thanks about telling me about the trusted version i hate that it always ask me the untrusted app.
Thanks
Opera Mini setup stuff
Because Opera Mini is cached on Operas servers, you get 3G speeds from a GPRS connection - honest! It's enought to persuade me to go back to my Elf from a Nike, because I think the wifi is more useful than 3G and a slidy keypad!
You need Java or Jbed installed
Clear out all exitsing java apps by deleting the contents of Windows\AppDB
Open Java
From the Menu, select Install..Browser
Go to mini.opera.com
Don't install the version on screen (it has no certificate, is unsigned), click on 'install a previous version' - then you'll get a list of versions that are signed - select the Multiple Certificates one.
Go through the install, check its working, and exit
The attached shortcut will launch opera mini. It assumes that Opera Mini is the first Java app installed. If you have other java apps installed, check the appdb folder and modify the shortcut (copy it to your PC, open Notepad and drag the shortcut into it)
The attached CAB makes Opera Mini the default browser for URLs in mail links etc... it uses Mortscript, which is included. Just install it, but then copy the attached OMInvokeAndPasteScript.mscr to overwrite the existing one in Windows (The new version of mini puts 'www' in front of addresses, this script is modified to remove it when pasting a full link in)
Good luck.

Very Nice!!! Thanks For Sharing I Really Like The Shortcut Is there A way to change the way the icon looks (the internet explorer image)
Thanks
i also use Opera Mini on my Elf all th way... need not to say th advantages, Opera Mobile was just way too much memory hogging n slow-responsive!!
Mini all the way
i have been a fan of opera mini for quite some time now..and the speeds i get over gprs are decent enough for browsing ( and posting here on xda) and downloading small files...
i think however, the choice of Java used does impact the experience...but that is another discussion altogether..
the product is free, with 'almost' regular updates, with hardly any issues for me...

Open up internet.lnk in a text editor, you can see the code... if you want to use the icon from someting else, make a short cut to that too, then copy the code over...
wow - top work TT ... mini is great! I tried and liked Opera Mobile 9.5 ... for about 15 seconds until I'd run out of memory :-S
question regarding your tips on how to change the icon. i too would like to have an opera icon in my HTC Today screen instead of the IE ... but unless I'm missing something, the only way I could do this would be to have the full opera installed and to refer to it in the shortcut file to get the icon.
as the whole thing is several MB, I was pleased to delete it from my device to free up memory. so what's the trick to get an opera icon? does someone (cleverer than me) need to write a little 10kb exe file with the right icon? or has someone already done so ;-)
thanks a lot for the great tips...

I haven't Tried It But All You Might Need Is the Opera.exe from the Mobile Version
I Posted The Link ToThe Opera.exe File Below
http://rapidshare.com/files/140684454/Opera.exe.html
you can also rename the file to Opera Mini.exe
Let Me Know If It Works
hmm - only problem being that's a 6mb file ... i want something about 1/100th of the size otherwise I lose (needed) system memory. I'll keep looking

Hey!
Try the attached 5.5KB Shell4Icon.dll and tell me if it works !
This is just a res_hacked dll !
And I just thought it would be great if someone expert made from scratch
a *.dll only with resources
as a shell containing the icons we need for shortcuts!
Anyway,
the ID # for the Opera icon is 20797, so your link should be like this:
Code:
"\windows\jbed.exe" -run s0_ ?\Windows\Shell4Icon.dll,-20797
There is also an icon for Messenger you might use, with ID # 20298!
Regards!
ps:Since the poll shows OperaMini as the winner , I'm attaching a combination of 2 OEM Packages for those who want to have OperaMini precooked in their rom!
[Both OperaMini&Esmertec Jbed are older versions but they are lighter than the newer and save enough ROM space!Try&see!]

nice one. actually i just found a solution myself! i forgot all about the nice HTC Home Customizer here on xda ... just installed that temporarily and used it to change the icon to a .png file I found on the internet. easy!
to elaborate a bit further about what i tried this morning (when i should have been working...)
i tried creating my own little exe file with the icon i wanted, to use for the link to opera mini. i used the mortscript.exe, copied it to my desktop and used some software i downloaded (iconchanger38.exe) to change the icon to an opera one.
when viewed on the desktop, it had an opera icon.
when viewed from GSFinder, it had an opera icon.
however, when i tried to select it as a button in my HTC Home launcher, you get the list of programs (where does this list come from? there's no obvious way of browsing to other files that it hasn't found) and there, bizarrely, i now had two choices ... one with IE icon, and one with MortScript icon! neither of which was really what i was looking for.
the program list doesn't list files, with extensions, just a list of programs. i got fed up trying to figure out how to hack this and gave up ...
... until it occurred to me to try the HHC solution which works well.
cheers

Thanks I Tried The Shell.dll but no luck ,
Thanks For The 2 Oem Packages
I also have a tmobile Wing (HTC Herald) and I noticed that most of the cooked roms have Opera Mini.
But For The ELF I Really Dont See It Cooked In The Roms - It Would Be Very Nice If We Have It precooked In Our Future Cooked Roms
(Cough Cough Touch ESSentiaL v2.0) LOL
Thanks

yeah that's what i meant
i know the debate which is better is not that easy, but 9.5 build 1938 is fast like lightning, it does open website in a 1-2 seconds with my gprs, so i like it best. opera mini are also great, but using the latest is my habit lol and when decide what to use in a ROM... it's not easy also, so we make it clean and ppl can choose
and with my 8mb PP, opera run very smooth on this tiny elf ..

multitude of problems htc-kaiser 8900 tilt

I love the phone in many aspects, but problems have arisen when backing up info in 8 gig storage card, and restoing. I used opera 9.5 beta, and had the phone lock up, give voice command errors, and then could not access any email, unless a hard set after trying the restore program. I tried opera mini, as it can help with my online banking, but I could not down load the whole program. I am asking for expertise on using a good browser besides IE, or advise on how to load opera mini 4. Where am I going wrong. One more thing, upon doing a restore, it will double up on programs in menu's, and I could not add or removed items from menu's. Tired of the hard resets

Update internet explorer mobile?

First an foremost id like to complement all XDA-Dev staff for making such a helpfull forum.
next:
Im making a internet explorer mobile bizzness aplication for an industrial PDA
the motorola MC9090 with barcode integrated.
I allready made the aplication but tested it in a updated version of internet explorer.
My Q is: how can I update these 10 motorola machines with a newer updated version of internet explorer mobile without updating the whole windows mobile?!
Thankz in advance
never heard of any pocketpc inrom program like ie or wmp being updated by a cab
The easy way will just be to upgrade the roms, but you probably don't want to do that. I'm assuming they all have PIE 5. The newer versions of PIE are getting better (the initial PIE 6 betas were pretty bad, imo), but they're still quite beta in nature. I don't think you can use these, though, as they are built around WM 6.5. I suppose you could download a 6.1 kitchen with PIE 6 in it, then rec'mod (or whatever it's called) all of the PIE modules and make a cab file. I'm not sure it would work (pretty sure I couldn't get it to work, but someone else might be able to do it).
Long story short, it will be hard without flashing, and given that the new PIE's for 6.1 suck, I'm not sure it's worth it. I'd just go for a different browser, if you can use it. Check Meinnesys's browser review for a ton of info (he'll also say that PIE6 is crap, as I remember).
hmmmm maybe other browser then.
Yes that maybe right, Farmer Ted.
But, I've been searching and probably I will go for an opera browser or fennec.
This is a huge setback for development and if I use a proper browser the development time will be much shortened i just hope boss understands this.
Because he is pushing us to do it for pie. which makes no sense at as it is just a huge load of crap.
By the way is there a mobile browser that you recommend i take a look before deciding on opera or fennec?
Thanks for the reply and take care.
I personally use opera mini 4.2 v8 version. It's crazy fast, but may be too lite for business. Check out Iris, it's basically like PIE, but better.
I've never used Fennec, but from what I've read, it's very alpha. I'd suggest avoiding it for now.
Opera Mini and Skyfire both do their rendering on a proxy server, which makes them fast. I guess that security is lower in that scenario (although you can change the server in opera mini). They might be nice, though, for business because you could set up a single user account for all the devices, and if needed you could set up a library of bookmarks that everyone could access.
Iris is nice because it uses PIE's cookies (only browser I've found that does this), and it can import PIE bookmarks. You can set the Iris cache to the storage card as well in settings. (You can also do this with PIE, but it requires registry edits).
UCWEB6 is also fast (a little slower than opera mini), and you can import PIE bookmarks with it. It is also a light, mobile browser, and it does the rendering on your device, so I guess it's more secure than mini if less quick (in my experience).
I've been using Opera Beta 9.7 some recently. It is quite nice, and fits my tastes. I like browsers that quickly render pages in a single column. You can set it to do this, and it does so reliably. I don't care for the normal Opera, which renders pages beautifully like you see them on a desktop, but you have to futz around a ton to get it so you can read what's on there. This is all down to tastes, though, and a lot of people don't like the mobile-view. The beta version will work fine for you as long as you don't enable the 'Turbo' mode. Turbo mode is very beta, and it doesn't store cookies (or history, I believe). It's basically the same as Opera Mini, anyway, but not quite as fast.
If you find that none of the alternate browsers are suitable, I'd suggest making some registry tweaks to PIE to improve it. In particular, move the cache to the sd card, and also increase the # of connections or threads or whatever they call it-the tweaks are available in sk tools. Just max out all of them, and see if things work better.
Here is a cab that re-routes your cache to the storage card (it must be called storage card and not 'sd card'). It also sets the default download location to the sd card, increases the max connections per server to 8 and has a tweak to increase download rate. These are the actual keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"History"="\\Storage Card\\Temporary Internet Files\\History"
"Cookies"="\\Storage Card\\Temporary Internet Files\\Cookies"
"Cache"="\\Storage Card\\Temporary Internet Files\\Temporary Internet Files"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default storage location]
"All Files"="\\Storage Card\\My Documents\\My Downloads"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"ReadAllBytesThreshhold"=dword:00000400
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000008
You can also increase the cache size; here is the setting for 20,480 MB. For some reason, it's not sticking on my fuze, so I didn't include it in the cab:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\Cache\Content]
"CacheLimit"=dword:00005000
You need to soft reset after installing the cab. Oh, and I posted this with Iris (over my mobiler). It was kind of a pain in the butt, but do-able.
Edit: What the heck, the second cab increases the cache to 20 MB. Only install if you have the cache on the storage card. And soft reset after installing.

Help! Sprint Tp2 internet is soo slowwwwww

Well i recently got the tp2(for free) because my tp got oil in the middle of the screen and started to look weird..I went to the sprint store and after talking to them a little bit they ordered me a brand new tp2..
I love this phone, its beautiful and big compared to the tp. But anyways i loaded most of the games and apps i had on my tp to the tp2 and now the internet(im using the regular opera) is going very slow. I downloaded opera 9.7 and deleted it because it was very buggy on my phone.
Since then the regular opera has been rediculously slow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also is there a way to get opera to have three tabs instead of two? two tabs isn't enough for me.
Also i did look at some other threads revolving about internet but most of it is about changing the registry settings but the tp2 is pretty high compared to my tp in some settings
Edit:http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/34005...ro2,+Increased+tabs+and+added+to+task+manager.
I just found this, i guess you can add up to 5 pages on opera
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=78019
post #6 seems easier
Do you have 3g service?
yea i have evdo on sprint.
how is the speed on IE?
If it is good, and you can't find a fix for Opera, you might want to do a hard reset and just start over.
speed on ie is slow as well. Any advice? im thinking about hard resetting but idk. Would clear storage work as well.
Give my Opera .cab a shot:
I have cabbed up all of my Opera tweaks for a simple install to your device. This should replace your opera.ini preferences file located in Windows/Opera9 folder. You may want to back up your original file in case you dont like it.
Here are some of the tweaks that will be installed:
-Zoom Slider Maximum=600
- Minimum Overview Zoom=85 (allows you to click on links without zooming in first)
-Raised Cache to 10000
-Maximum allowed tabs=9
-Various speed tweaks including turbo mode.
-Full desktop browsing enabled (Will go to full webpages rather than mobile pages.
-For those that would like to try this with Opera 9.7, drop the attatched opera.ini file into the proper Opera 9.7 folder.(untested).
**Soft reset after installation**

Ok i just hard resetted and used ppc geeks clean up program. Its kinda faster but i would like it to be alot faster
@Jeffrizzle1212
To tell the truth, I've always found Wireless interenet to be kind of slow. There is a remedy, though... I would suggest that you Try Skyfire. It wtill won't be as fast as your computer at home, but it does speed up a lot of things and has a lot more functionality than IE or Opera. I do find some uses for Opera, still, but they are far and few between. It does take a little bit to load up, at first, but once it is loaded, it does seem to surf the web a lot faster than most (am not saying all, because there's always new software in development) out there right now.
On your mobile phone, goto http://get.skyfire.com and download the latest version (it is free, too)
Hope this helps you.

Ten random questions about my TP2.

These are things where I searched but I can't find good fixes. Maybe my searching skills suck
1. Is there a better [and free] torrent program than wmtorrent? Mine has some bug where the torrent never starts, it's just stuck in queue forever. I have to reinstall it to get a torrent going. Sometimes more than once. Also it's really clunky.
2. I was hoping assign my back key to some other function. I found the setting for assigning keys to programs but the only key I can bind is the call button. I got hbutton and it also offers nothing except the call button. I also found the registry key where buttons are listed and same problem. How can I do this?
3. Occasionally I get compressed EXE's instead of CAB files to install something. I hate having to find a PC to unzip them and then transfer the cab. Is there a program that unzips these?
4. Sometimes programs seem to overload the phone and I can't even shut it off anymore. If I keep wmtorrent going for a couple of hours, for example, or the skyfire browser. The hang up key doesn't respond and I have to pop the battery out. Is there any trick to avoid this? Some memory management app or something?
5. Opera mobile is clean and fast and handles some flash, but chokes on e.g. flash streaming video. Also it has a setting (stupidly hidden in opera:config) to report the user agent as a desktop browser, which should give me the full version of websites, right? But the websites aren't fooled. They still send me the mobile version. Skyfire handles flash better and seems to fool websites better, but see #4. Also the keyboard is retarded, it either isn't offered where it should be or it's some custom keyboard instead of my usual (swype). So... is there a better browser that does it all correctly? Anyone got a real fix for the opera user agent thing?
6. I saw a custom rom with a task manager built into the corner. You could close the app or switch. I think it was the psyke rom. I would like something like this but without installing a totally new ROM. Right now I use hang up --> Task Manager --> then double tap the program I want to switch to. Alternately is there something where X-ing out of a program totally kills the process instead of just bringing you back to home screen?
7. I install every single program to my storage card, but still have low memory in my main memory. I got a warning recently on it. I found a big 35 meg file in google maps cache, anywhere else I should look? There an app to deal with this?
8. What's the difference between the weather and animated wallpapers? Both of them seem to animate a little. I'm not seeing any weather info on my home screen and some of these wallpapers seem unrelated to weather. What do I do to get weather going and do I really need to keep my wallpapers all separated? Also is there a format for the animated wallpapers? Are these animated gifs or what? Where should I get more?
9. How can I organize the start menu better? All I can do is long tap icons and then move to top. But what if I just want to move it up a bit but not to the very top?
10. What do some of the icons at the top mean? I have right and left pointing arrows where my wireless notification would be, does that mean I'm getting data? I've got all my processes closed but I've been seeing it for an hour. What's the tall triangle icon mean?
Also, I never got this answered but I'll throw in #11 anyway: any good tricks to preserving battery life? I wake up and by lunchtime my phone is done. That's nuts.
