Backing up qa_Layouts.dat - General Questions and Answers

Hi, I am new to my omnia, and am wondering how to backup files safely... mainly qa_layouts.dat from the SPB menu 3. I am trying to download some of Mskip's widgets. I am worried I will back it up wrong, and loose it.
Do I just copy and paste the file to my storage (aka storage card), or what?
Please help, thanks!
Also, do I need software to do it? Like SPB backup, or sprites?

qa_layouts.dat is a plain file like any other so just copy it somewhere other than its program directory so that in the event something goes wrong you can just copy it back into place. Doesn't need any extra software, even copy it via ActiveSync back to your PC

Thanks! I'll do this.

Is it possible to get files in storage from backup rom?

I just upgrade my mini to bigstorage. I did backup the original rom using a 256MB SD, a full backup with Sprite Backup and hoysync my PIM. BUT I FORGET those VERY IMPORTANT files inside original storage. How stupid I am? Now I want to know is it possible to get those files back? In what way? It's seems that the Sprite Backup doesn't include the storage.
Those files are really important (that's why they stored in storage, not sd), please help.
I hope this could helps (but I'm not 100% sure):
- Backup your previous ROM from SD to computer, if you didn't do that yet.
- Backup your current ROM to SD and then to computer.
- Backup all your other data, PIM etc.
Downgrade from SD ROM backup:
- Write your previous ROM to SD card and then update your pocket device from SD.
If you want to recover Extended ROM content do this:
- Hard reset your device and when configuration (align screen, time zone...) is done and you are asked to tap the screen, tap it and soft reset it immediately.
- Open Pocket File Explorer and you should see Extended ROM folder on root, if not repeat previous step
- Copy Extended ROM folder to some safe place
Else if you want to recover usual Storage folder, if it appears after downgrade in Pocket File Explorer, copy it to safe place.
Upgrade back to your current ROM:
- Write your new ROM from computer to SD and then to pocket device and update again, than restore all your data backup.

Flashed phone - need to recover files

Is there any way to recover files from a phone that has been flashed? All photo/file restore programs seem only to restore deleted information from memory cards/hard drives. I need to restore some data from my device itself (T-Mobile Dash). Are there any programs out there that will do this?
Thank you in advance for any help...
I really doubt you can recover from a flashed device. Your best bet is to go back to the old rom and then do a full restore with your backup file, which I'm sure that you have. Then copy all the files/reg settings you need to your sd card. Then flash back to the new rom and install the files/reg settings either manually or with sashimi.
Why don't you backup your files and program .cab's before you flash it? That's the smartest way..
no you cant, you should have taken a back up. But after flashing you cannot recover it.
Thanks for the input. I figured so much. I didnt think I had any files I cared about saved directly on the device. Teaches me to backup my files no matter what....

I know about a program that can recover deleted files not only from cd or sm card, but also from other media types. It is called Advanced File Recovery. I hope this program will help you.

That program is for windows and not windows mobile.
As far as i know, there is no way to recover data from a flashed mobile.

Need to backup phone.

I had my phone for 5 months and installed alot of files on my Device .I need a way to save all my apps etc.I would have tried copying and pasting my files to my card but I have a feeling Something may go wrong so anyway have way or I just have to go with it ?
Don't you have Sprite? It will do it. If not, get SK Tools and use the 'All System' backup option. It's very good.

Will do thanks .
If you use SK, before backing up, in the backup tool go to Tools->Settings and select yes for 'create SFX file for full backup.' Make sure the SD card isn't included (takes bloody forever, lol, and you may not have the disk space). You can exclude folders from backup if you want (like the PIE cache), and also tell it to not search in places like \windows, \application data, \program files or \my documents when looking for backup files. It speeds things up. I keep all my backups in one folder on my sd card, and I also put that as the auto backup path. When you do full backups or just pim backups, it will automatically save things there. It's amazing, SK Tools backup is much better than the Sprite backup that comes with the fuze, and it costs less than Resco or SPB backup, and in addition to the backup tool it has a few dozen other tools that are very useful. That's the end of the commercial, lol.

[Q] Transfer backup to PC

First off, sorry if this is not the right place to post this.
I've googled around and can find lots of answers to 'where does ROM manager store backups' but that doesn't help me with this.
In the past I've backed up a ROM then moved it (using something like Root Explorer) to my external card and also because I want a backup on my computer - I just copied the file across.
But now the files (and folders) are invisible to my PC.
I tried moving it, renaming the folder, creating a new folder and moving the contents out of the original folder into the new one... but to no avail. The PC simply cannot see what ever folder contains the backup.
But If I look in the same location using Root Explorer, the backup is sitting there clear as day.
I pretty much always have 'show hidden files' turned on on my PC anyway - why can't I see/transfer the backup to my computer?

Nandroid backup, navigation, contents and accessibility?

I'm really out of my depth here, so I figured I'd ask you all for help! My Samsung Galaxy S2 sgh-I727 recently got stuck in a boot loop (most likely due to a faulty power button), and I have a new phone coming in on Monday to replace it (as it's quite outdated). I was able to use ODIN to flash CWM onto the phone, which I used to make an Nandroid Backup onto my SD Card. I then put the SD card into a friend's phone, then transferred them onto my computer, merged the files together (data.ext4.tar.a and data.ext4.tar.b and the system.ext4's), then used winrar to explore the resultant file folder.
I am mainly looking to get my contacts back, and, if possible, various media, such as pictures, music, videos, etc. From my poor Google-fu, i noticed that many people mentioned that Nandroid does not backup sdcard, but I was unsure whether that meant external sd card or the sdcard storage directory (sdcard0 and such). If it does not backup pictures, music, videos, etc., is there possible a way to use CWM or such to backup these files?
Also, I found a .com that looks like it might contain contacts, maybe, but I'm not sure how I would access them to find it.
If I can clarify this in any way, I will try! If this might also do in a better place, just let me know! I'd appreciate any possible help!

Put the backup back in the folder fr where you go it and reboot into cwm and restore it. Now the Nandroid backup doesnt copy your external files, It backs up your current system state like contacts call logs all the apps. You cant simply extract files from there. You to restore it to get your system state back with all the apps and everything.

Whelp, guess I'm screwed there then. That would help if the phone wasn't stuck in a bootloop. Thanks anyways!
