Hey guys!
I have take JF 1.51 EU ROM and tweaked some parts of it to make it more friendly to non T-mobile / Developer users.
Changes:
* Removed Web'n'Walk app
* Removed SpareParts app (ugly in the menu, with minimal daily use)
* Removed Google ringtones/alarms/notifications
* Removed all European APNs
* Added HTC Magic ringtones/alarms/notifications (better selection imho)
* Added Orange, O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile APNs
* Added latest Google Maps application
* Added HTC mail app (Work Email)
* Swapped default wallpaper for rogers one (bit smarter)
* Made launcher app drawer solid black background
Where can you find it:
I've started a project on google code http://code.google.com/p/htc-dream-uk
could be good for those uk users already on JF, im sticking to cyanogens test builds, but if i was looking for a stable rom, like JF a uk based would be amazing.
Here are the O2 PAYG settings for internet and MMS
Copied from the apns-conf.xml file, so you can just copy/paste this into your apns-conf.xml file.
Code:
<apn carrier="O2 PAYG" mcc="234" mnc="10" apn="payandgo.o2.co.uk" user="payandgo" server="" password="password" mmsproxy="193.113.200.195" mmsport="8080" mmsc="http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002" type="" proxy="" port="" />
Hope this helps a bit
I'm on O2 Simplicity and I use:
APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
USERNAME: vertigo
PASSWORD: password
Thanks guys, I will include them into the build.
I assume the MMS settings are the same for Pay&Go and SIMplicity?
OK - Those two O2 APNs have been added.
If someone could confirm working APNs for Vodafone then that would be great.
Also, is there an easy way to alter the status bar color etc? I dont want to get too messy, but just a thought.

Have a look in the Themeing & Applications subforum. I think the related .png file is located in /system/framework-res.apk
Just open the .apk file with 7zip and edit the statusbar_background.png in the res\drawable folder in photoshop or gimp and change the colour

Hello,
I would be interested in such a rom. I currently use the rogers rom because I like the htc mail app. Would you consider trying it in your rom rather than the google mail app?

I will try. Since I am working on JF 1.51 baseline I dont know if this is possible. I am quite new to the FW game, so we will have to experiement.
I plan to make the RC1 build available this coming Friday evening GMT. If the HTC mail app is missing, then lets try to get it into RC2
Did the framework-res.apk file editing work?
I just looked at the file when I posted and figured it might work ^^
APNs
May be of some use for all the APNs
http://modmygphone.com/wiki/index.php/Carrier_APN_Settings#UK_Networks
I will check out the APN list posted. Hopefully add the missing UK networks.
I also managed to get the Mail.apk from a Rogers ROM supporting Exchange, with the help of some people on the forum, and a quick test looks promising. I will make it available in the ROM also.
I did manage to alter the framework-res.apk and have a black status bar, but the icons looked poor against it. I added the rogers wallpaper (red wave) and it looks smart, and I also made the Launcher menu background solid black. Overall I think it is a little more "smart" looking.
Hopefully will make the ROM available tonight via rapidshare etc, or maybe start a Google project.
This looks interesting for simplicity and a clean look, I like that you're trying to change the normal, dull grey status bar / pull down because I really prefer the semi-transparent black version used in Hero.
Thanks for taking the time to work on this rom and good for you for sticking up for yourself in other posts. you know which i mean.

For the initial release I am going to keep the status bar "dull grey" I am going to work on a transparent black, but it will mean I need to change the icons to suit, which will take time.
It might be easier to rebuild the Launcher.apk from source and make it load the icons from filesystem rather than RES folder. That way it could be skinned a bit easier... just a thought.

When I bought my ADP1 I always planned to make a generic ROM for us UK users. Alot of work goes into the US versions, but since the dialers format the number for the US scheme it makes it less attractive to the UK users.
I know that I will benefit from my ROM, I just hope others will to.
I have updated the main page and added links to the download.
I might release updates as a patch to the main download, to reduce the download times. Details will be on the Wiki on the project site.

Ok. There are many changes in this rom. Some may or may not like the changes. I was thinking that I should really live up to the name "Gutted" so I completely removed anything and everything I possibly could. The change log is going to be in the next post.
Also, as stated above this update includes the MR so any issues that were resolved with the update are resolved in this rom.
Now I removed the clock widget in this release but you can easily add it back and the issue with the location and weather not showing should be fixed. Usually it takes a minute or two to find location once pushed but if it doesnt work also push HTCNew.apk and odex and it should work fine.
Oh and before I forget make sure you remember to go into the settings and do a few things. First go to Settings->Data Sunchronization->Google and set up your Google account. Also you may go to Location to set up your GPS and Display to set up the animations.
Finally, I would like to thank MoDaCo for porting the first custom rom ever to the CDMA Hero and making us all very happy people, Amon_RA for his awesome recovery image, Mlign from the Dream community for guidance and pieces of his rom and everyone here at the XDA Communities for being awesome and never giving up.

Optimized multiple applications as well as Rosie (also reoptimized Rosie since we have the MR update included) such as the Browser, HTC Albums, Phone and Settings
Optimized additional jpegs and pngs that were located various places in the rom
Added Hosts file to block ads for faster web browsing
Added Sprint Visual Voicemail back into the mix
Removed EVERYTHING. Every single HTC widget is now gone, including the clock widget (Look in above post for more)
Removed all other HTC apps that start up on start up including Teeter and Peep
[Gutted Hero 1.0]
Fast
Optimized apps including Rosie.apk (Rosie was 8MB now it's 1.2MB!)
Optimized htc.com.framework.apk and framework-res.apk files
MoDaCo's great and stable 1.1 rom base
Animations from Moto Blur (I think. They are the zooming fading transitions in Mlign's Dream Hero rom)
New Bootscreen (again from Blur I think, it's from Mlign's Dream Hero rom)
Oh and it's fast too
I'm pretty sure the clock is crashing because you removed the weather. They had seemed to be closely tied when I looked at the original sense ui.

No. I removed Weather many times before and the clock functioned perfectly. At work now so I will have to try and fix it tonight.

Yeah it's easy really. If you want you can take it from my rom and just replace it. The way I did it though is by opening up /system/app/Rosie.apk in an archive manager of some sort (7zip would work). Then I pulled all the pngs out of it and optimized them with optipng. Then I just dragged them back into the apk and your done. There are also jpegs somewhere in there so I deleted all of them except for the first one and with that one I just resaved it and compressed it a bit. You can look in my Rosie.apk if it helps or like I said, your free to just use that one if you want. Just note if you take my framework-res.apk, that is where the anims are stored so you will want to replace my anims folder with MoDaCo's unless you like the new ones.

The rosie linked here is a scant 732 kilobytes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532822
I had been toying with installing it for awhile, then I downloaded the dxTop home replacement and I don't think I will be using rosie ever again .
EDIT: Great rom idea btw. I would love to see a real "gutted" Hero rom, including the removal of Rosie. MoDaCo has previously posted a neat little script to accomplish this:

Does hitting the "Clock" shortcut in your app drawer not work either?
Speaking of weather and location not working in the clock widget, I'm noticing the same behavior from MoDaCo's 1.1 ROM. I've searched for more information about it but haven't come up with anything yet. Do you have any updates as to why this might not be working?

Sweet, thanks!!! (I seem to recall learning this before...just completely forgot it until now, and hadn't thought to do this. I wonder what other apps I could apply that too...hmm)
Will your Gutted ROM install if I have MoDaCo 1.1 installed, running Apps2SD with my SD card partitioned with the three partitions? I have had trouble installed Fresh's ROM because of the Apps2SD partitions.

Since this is based off of MoDaCo's rom yes, Apps2SD works straight out of the box.
post back later if I like it flashing right now, but adding back some of the apps. Many thanks for adding the orginal apps I do use some but others will never be used.
Do I need to wipe then flash?
yeah need to wipe before flashing, ok will live with it for a day then I'll get back and post an update
Flashed with the Gutted ROM and I get "HTC Sense has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" at startup. Can't fully boot. I powered down and rebooted and I get the same thing.

What is the rosie.ask? What does it do?
I'm rooted and have working MetaMorph. I've been told that due to ODEX files stock ROMs are not skinnable with MM at all. Is this true? I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639556&page=5
THIS skin (with Desire Battery Icon). If it's possible and someone actually comes through, beer money will be headed your way. Flat black, all Desire Icons, works on stock if at all possible. I'm new to Android so I don't know much about this stuff unfortunately.
You can theme the .apk's but cannot change the color of the text (but you cannot change anything that would reside in a .dex file since that .dex file is now in an .odex file). If you don't have a problem with not being able to see you carrier name, clock, or date, then it is doable.

Drat. I guess I'll have to hit the forums to see if there's any ROMs at all that are minimal in nature but still allow the skinning. I'm not really liking all the extra stuff in CM and MoDaCo's ROMs right now. I love that they're doing the work and forwarding the platform (I used MDC's superboot/root which was fantastically easy) but I'm not into the additions, I want to make those myself. What to do (aside from dealing with the stock bars)...

You should really look at enomther's ROMs then. They are about stock if you don't choose any of the extras that come with them. They are also amazingly stable.
EDIT:Since you do speak of making your own mods, then if you de-odex your build then you could theme it as you choose basically.
http://code.google.com/p/smali/
That will set you up on de-odex-ing your build.
The reason I've been slower at posting requests lately is about to come clear!
I have created an "online kitchen" of sorts for creating custom skinned, signed, HTC_IME high and low res apk files. This means you guys can very easily create your own skins and customize the ones I've created!
What is this?
A website you can visit on your computer or directly from your phone that will let you a> create a custom skinned keyboard based off of any of the images currently in the library (various colored keys, backgrounds, etc) with whatever text color you want and b> customize existing "skins" (will be known as "presets") however your heats desire.
Currently, it should be considered very beta. All the features that are here should be working 100%.
Why beta, that sounds scary?
It's beta for a couple of reasons, 1 because it's currently UGLY as sin (concentrated on features and back end first) and 2 because I'm actively working on it which means it could break at any time.
What is the point of this?
Besides the fact that you can now customize the hell out of the way your keyboard looks, it drastically reduces the amount of work I have to do in the future. Currently, i'm uploading 46 pre-themed apk files for every single update. While this isn't really a big deal since I automated the process, it slows down how quickly I can put up updates. With this new method, all I have to do is upload the original unthemed keyboard apk and classes.dex for each new version and my work is done!
Everything else:
If you select a preset, you will still be asked to choose each portion of the keyboard (background, buttons, text color etc). The image with the yellow border around it (you'll see what I mean) is the default "piece" for the preset.
One last thing, depending on server load it could take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to generate the keyboard. Most of the time I suspect it will be < 1 minute tho.
I don't mind if you use this to generate a keyboard and include it with something (theme/morph) or post it somewhere, just give due credit

Added v27-froyo lowres version to kitchen!
New option: Create your own primary/function keys is FINALLY here!
Pre-themed/Pre-built skinned keyboards.
Custom skins for Jonasl's HTC_IME high res.
These are signed with the exact same certificate that jonasl uses so if you can install his, you can install these and go back and forth with no problem.
These are no longer flashable update.zip files, all you need to do is download the zip file, extract the HTC_IME_hi.apk to your sd card and install with a file manager (linda, or something that supports reinstalling for future installs).
Special note, if you have not already installed v22 or higher, I highly suggest you read Jonasl's thread here for important information regarding this keyboard. You will need to re-enable and completely reconfigure this keyboard after installing (only if you haven't already done v22+).
One last note, there is a new hi res Clicker.apk available too. I have not included it in these downloads, you will need to get that from the official HTC_IME Mod download if you haven't already! Update: or get it here -> Clicker_hi.zip
v24 links removed because v25 is now available in the kitchen, screenshots represent some of the many themes you can create there!
Thankyou so much all working perfectly !
Oh thanks for this, I definetly don't like Metamorph - so this was a life saver. Well not really a life saver, more like a life enhancer lol..
Great job thanks .
I know this is an htc forum but is there any way you can throw an update.zip of v18 for us droid users? The candidate bar is broken on v19 for droid but it worked on 18... if you can do it would you make it the black with white text theme? This would be much appreciated! Keep up the great work!

Sure thing, I don't want to maintain to many old versions going forward, but this one is the most frequently downloaded one, and it sounds like Jonasl isn't going to get us a new version real soon (i could be mistaken tho).

It must. Have you been able to install the un-themed keyboard from Jonasl? If that is the case, I have absolutely no idea why these wouldn't work. They are identical to the APKs he produces just with my theme changes.
These themed versions work like a charm on stock N1.
I extracted the APK, installed with ASTRO. Just to be safe, I uninstalled previous version.

For stock I would recommend option 3 with astro file manager or similar.
I used option 3 with astro go to choose input method and it only gives me android keyboard option ? rebooted phone too just to make sure .
Thanks bro for the update.zip. I had almost given up on flashing the penguins skin as I could not get MM to do it no matter what I tried. Anyway this method worked. Have the keyboard themed with penguins.
quick question: if I install a new ROM and wipe data prior to that will I have to apply this again? If so can I do this directly without installing the orginal HTC keyboard? Thanks again.

I *think* either on stock firmware and/or first time you run it you have to actually enable it first. Try going to settings, language and keyboard, and see if you have touch input that you can either check mark to enable or go into for settings, then try to set it as your input type.

Yes you will have to apply it again, and yes you can go straight to my pre-themed keyboards (by flashing, pushing, installing, however you want!).
that did it thanks very much
Works great! Thank you.
I'm working on a complete AOSP taskbar, however I'm having trouble with one pesky little icon (see attached). If I'm correct, then that's where the location icon should be, however for some reason it's giving me the roaming icon. Now, I'm not roaming for one thing, and for another, I have the correct .pngs in the file (sym_gpsone_[0,3]_[sprint,vzw].png in com.htc.resources.apk) but it doesn't want to use those.
Am I editing the wrong icons? Or is there another hack necessary to get it to use the correct ones?
Thanks.
What are the names of your gps icons in com.htc.resources.apk? Should be sym_gpsone_0_sprint.png and sym_gpsone_3_sprint.png. Make certain...If you can, zip up your com.htc.resources.apk and i'll take a look...

If you're positive that you know you're editing the correct .png file and that you aren't roaming, then next logical problem would be in the .xml programming of the taskbar...but I highly doubt many of actually mess with the code inside the .xml files.
Double check the icon and your network settings.
Take a look for yourself. It's sym_gpsone_0_sprint.png and sym_gpsone_3_sprint.png.

What ROM is this for? And where did you get the services.jar for it? I only ask because the same thing happened to me when I was puttin some **** together and used a .jar for Legend on Sprint(or the other way around I dont remember). Anyways, it looked exactly like that. So, you might want to check that first...
My ROM that I'll be releasing soon has, I think, all of the icons changed to their AOSP counterparts. (might be missing mail, since I don't use that apk) The headphone icons I had to derive from the black versions, but I think they look very good. (I couldn't find aosp icons for headphones??) I don't have the rest of the ROM exactly how I'd like it yet, so I'm not posting it yet... but if you'd like to look at (or steal) what I've got, you're welcome to, just send me a PM and I'll link you to it. It's highly based on the Gomorrahs Green Hero One theme, and he had most of them already fixed.
I'd also like to add that I've got the notification panel AOSP themed too, minus the carrier text color.

Good point, I snagged the services.jar from one of the posts in the themes thread, I think it was for one of the earlier Fresh ROM's...

I just recently moved from iOS to Android, and I like it so far but it looks kind of... cheap. I'm talking about HTC Sense specifically, stock/AOSP Android is well design but albeit dull to some (although I don't agree, I prefer the minimalistic design). Some of it is okay while other parts don't make a whole lot of sense or just look plain amateur. Most of all, I think it's way over exaggerated. I hate looking at the browser bar and seeing a heavily glossed bevel with a near near flat text input and a inset button. Why would a button be even inset?
Anyway, I like some of Sense's additional features, and since Cyanogen isn't stable yet, I'd like to re-design Sense to be more subtle and just better designed. I'm a well established UI/UX designer but always have a lot of work on hand. So if someone who is knowledgeable with the graphic files that make up Sense (preferably in the new Froyo build) and is willing to identify and send the files (preferably in a zip of organized folders so I could just re-design and leave as is which could then be easily turned into a usable update file by someone), I'd get started ASAP.
The EVO is fine as is, but improving the appearance of Sense would go a long way in calming my OCD mind Attached is a quick example of how it would look like. It's the "to" contact bar in the HTC messaging app - the top is default, the bottom is my redesigned version.
My main beefs with the default graphic are:
a. It's too glossy making the outset depth of the bar appear high, problem is that a flat element (the text input box) is laid on top of it thus making it look weird and unnatural. Plus it makes it look like cheap plastic.
b. The button is inset. Why? Have you ever seen a inset button? Maybe once or twice. Looks more like a active selection than a button. the lighting is also off and just plain looks terrible.
c. The corners are rounded, but why? It looks out of place and loses fluidity with the rest of the layout. One thing I noticed is that HTC likes to throw in rounded corners in just about everything they can.
Like I said, this will be a very subtle theme but I think it will help make the stock Sense theme better. So if anyone wants to help identifying the files or knows a known resource (which I doubt since Froyo must have changed things a bit), just PM me.
I second this request. I wish I could help.
I totally agree with you in that the Sense theme needs to be more subtle.
I have always wondered why it has taken so long for someone to come up with this theme.
that would be nice
I like the idea!
Heres what I have so far.
In framework-res, I have included everything I think you will need. You'll have to let me know how much theming you intend to do. ie buttoms/selections (everything with a stock gloss?) or not.
I will continue to dig up more of what you need once I hear how deep you're looking to go. I included the taskbar icons because those will need to be changed to fit whatever the taskbar changes too so they will match. Obviously I have yet to include the signal ones along with 4g, as well as the individual app status bar notifications.
I'll wait to hear back before I progress much further.
Again, very nice looking.
Edit: Updated my post to add more.
I want to fix as much as possible. Anything you send, I'll theme. I'll commit to that.
But at the least, I want to redesign buttons and major UI elements like the example I showed. I definitely would like to redesign selections -- I'm not sure why they are "crystal-like", I much prefer a AOSP-like selection but of course in green for Sense.
I'll look through these and see what I'll do with them.

Ok, don't know if I edited my post before or after this, but I added more to the framework-res folder with an updated zip. It now includes everything from there you should/could need from that particular file. See what you can do with those. I'm not 100% sure if any of the files used in froyo have changed (what gets used in those folders and what doesn't) so bare with me. But for the most part it shouldn't be that difficult to dig up the rest of the important stuff.
I just pulled it now so it should be the latest files.
I just pushed that sense folder to my work server, once something is in there, they get done. I'll update the folder as I get more items.

Alright so this is what I'll do. I'll theme these current files and when I'm done I'll post some previews and then you or someone else who is willing can send a new batch of files. That way it can be done in waves and can be easily managed.
So I'll finish these and post back soon.

Ok, well this has totally got me pumped, so I went through and did more for you. I've included the other files out of ease, so what I have done is labeled all the folders which have new files (new from that one posted above) and added "contains new" at the end. Then within each folder i have created "new" folders for what I have added. That way you don't have to go through and figure out what you have done and whats been added.
This should keep you busy as I'm done for the night. This is a lot of the major stuff though. I will report back with anything else I find later on.
Award Tour, just curious, do you have experience with .9.png's?
Barnacles, I noticed you pulled stuff out of framework-res, did you toss him the stuff from com.htc.resouces.apk too?

Yeah the second file I posted here has pretty much everything he needs to start. Most everything from resources, and framework as well as other stock apps

Not yet, but I understand them now I think. I noticed immediately that some of the files had to scale somehow and from your post just noticed that those files are the .9 files you speak of. I'll look into it but I'm just gonna assume that they have some sort of meta info in them for now. I'll work on those last so I can read up on the file format.

Yeah they have invisible guides that tell the OS where to stretch the image to suit whatever purpose it needs.
When you open, edit and re-save them the guides disappear so you'll have to redraw them. You will find plenty of info on .9's.
The search bar you did looks much better than Google's version, I'm sure this will end up being a pretty sweet theme
This is no small undertaking or I would jump in on it and help out.
There are tons of people here who are more talented and experienced than I but if you have any questions you're welcome to pm me.
Hey guys. I am up for the night and addicted to flashing **** so let me know if you need a beta tester.
Once you finish what's there feel free to send them back to me and I can throw em back where they need to go and make a morph for the changes to test them out.
ok so are those .zips flashable? any screens of what you have done? it looks nice on the first picture

I only spent like 20 minutes on it today during work but I should do a hour or so more later tonite.
I finished some of the status bar but I was disappointed to see that the background image for a notification item was missing. I still designed it but if anyone knows how I can throw it in sense (maybe a simple file with the right name? maybe check a AOSP build because it should be in there) let me know.
Here it is for those that are interested, I will probably refine it further but this is what I got so far:
The aim, if you haven't already noticed, is to combine stock AOSP Android with a Sense-like look.

They are not flashable. Sorry for double posting but can't multiquote. They are simply folders. Had to zip them up to attach them is all

Try to send me a new batch as well, I *think* I'll be done with this in a hour. If you can, send me the froyo ones.
