Turning Pocket Internet Explorer 7 into a PC based browser

This tweak: http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/change_pocket_internet_explorer_6
... worked perfectly in PIE6 and I was wondering if an equivalent tweak existed for PIE7.
The tweak for PIE6 above does not work for PIE7.
The pure reason for such a tweak is to allow more sites to be usable/accessible from the Universal. In its current form, PIE7 does not function well with a lot of sites.
I know I could just install another browser, but I want to work with what is already there and not use up the Universal's precious free space.

Sorry for misleading the name.
Its not called "Pocket Internet Explorer 7" but instead it is officially called "Internet Explorer Mobile 6.9".
I did some tests with http://web-sniffer.net and found out that the User-Agent string IEM6.9 gives out is:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatibale; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.9)
To make IEM 6.9 look like a desktop IE intead of a Pocket/Mobile IE, all that is needed to be done is to change the User-Agent string iexplorer.exe broadcasts from the one defined above to the following:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatibale; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; IEMobile 6.9)
I have gone through the registery to find out where "Windows CE" is defined as far as IE is concerned and could not find any.
I wanted to transfer iexplorer.exe from the Universal to the PC so that I can try a binary string search on it, but trying to make a copy of iexplorer.exe anywhere produces an error. Does anybody know how to get around this?

FYI, the reason why I intend to probe into iexplore.exe is because of:

tweaks2k2net gives you the free choice of changing your user agent as you wish. you can even "disguise" your PIE as Internet Explorer 7 if you like to do that.

I've searched and searched and would love the answer as well.
I tried using Advanced Config but no matter what I put in for User Agent, my Tilt adds info about Windows CE and web sites give me their mobile version (not their desktop version, what I'd really like).
I've tried Registry changes as discussed above and they don't work either.
Somehow, Opera is able to pull this off but I can't use it because of display purposes.
Help, please??

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]
The values are strored in the follwing:
@="Mozilla/4.0"
Compatible="compatible"
Desc="Default (Windows CE)"
Platform="Windows CE"
UA-Language="JavaScript"
Version="MSIE 6.0"
Just change the value for "Platform" to the following and it should work:
"Windows NT 5.1"

First of all congratulations are in order for being one of the best ROM builders ever!
The free software from ANB Software called Web Viewer (28 kb) not only put the above registry entries into the PPC registry. But it also gives tab browsing too.
Basically, it turns the PIE into Firefox, as Firefox for PPC is dearly missed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, when I went to change this registry value, I found it didn't help.
Based on some prior research, the User Agent seems to be preserved in a browser.dll file. See:

Now, I did some comparisons by going to www.useragentstring.com. I found that no matter what registry settings I changed, my Tilt was adding in user agent data to indicate I am on a Windows CE device; I am sure that this is why I keep getting shunted to Mobile versions of web sites.
Here's what I got from PIE:
"HTC-8900/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IE Mobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0"
But interestingly, when I use Opera with the setting checked to emulate a desktop machine, I get:
"Mozilla/4.0 (Compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) Opera 8.65 [en]"
Clearly, Opera is able to modify the data that browser.dll is sending out. If only Opera met my needs, I would be golden; unfortunately, it takes forever to load a page, and it throws screen after screen of empty space in the middle of some pages.
I'd love to use PIE enhanced with PIEPlus, but I just have to figure out how to spoof a desktop machine.
Perhaps with this extra background someone will have a suggestion??

Thanks for this suggestion. I tried this software, but it did not work well for me. Some problems I have:
• It is unable to be the "default browser" despite the check box in Prefs. Thus, clicking on a link in an email sends the link to PIE.
• I can't even cut/copy a link and paste it into the address bar - pasting doesn't work.
• Even when I type a link directly, it goes to the mobile version.
I would gladly try another browser if it worked as I need, but so far no luck.

What browser is this?

look like picsel , but as far as i know , picsel is only for samsung ... i don't know then ( maybe a new version of deepfish )

Given the image fits to the curve of the screen housing, I guess it's just a photoshop job. If it was an LCD image it would have 90 degree corners and would not be 100% to the edge of the housing.

Picsel also doesn't (natively) go fullscreen, so it's probably Photoshopped. There are a number of good browsers that will go fullscreen though...

You've said too much Vijay, how can Picsel go fullscreen? (and also is it possible to browse the web without being online? I mean the history pages, just like in PIE)

The latest version of picsel, hacked to install on any WM device, is NATIVELY full screen. You have to tap and hold for everything. Picsel is not a great browser, it's main purpose is as a file viewer. It's not great at THAT, either.

Agreed. See my related review at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1213451&postcount=20 for a review of a, as far as native full screen support is concerned, earlier version.

As has been explained in the Web Browsing Bible ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1213451&postcount=20 ), the Picsel browser doesn't do ANY caching. Therefore, no history pages either.

Shadow - Jeodek 20070806.2.1 has no fullscreen & Jbed don't work fully

The Shadow comes with Jeodek 20070806.2.1 which in most respects seems to be a decent Java...except it doesn't do full fullscreen. I also tried to sub 'tckmax' for 'untrusted' in the selector.utf file and you couldn't even get to the menu to launch Opera mini, it just keeps crashing.
More bad news...I tried to install Jbed to the new Shadow and it works fine until a password is required (like the area where you enter a password to sync your Opera bookmarks). The text entry area won't take any input.
Hopefully one of you hackers can do something about this, but for now you've gotta answer those network prompts each time.

Is The t-Shadow a smartphone or ppc ? if itz a Smartphone i got something that might help if you have e-Natives smartoolkit you need , to go to opera mini and then go to the login part the active movie window where you enter the pass open it the bring the clip board part of smartoolkit where you copy n paste whilst press the key to high light the text instead enter what you want to enter in the text box when your done you press done and voila! it worked for me on jeodek and jbed because everytime i kept trying loggin in anywhere it gave me wrong pass til i tried the above method and now i can log in anywhere hope dis Works 4 u

Thanks - the Shadow is a smartphone. I really want to figure out what's wrong instead of using another utility to work around it tho.

Found the problem, corrected, and am working happily now. I had downloaded TNT's JBED and it didn't work properly. I uninstalled it and installed Cloudyfa's JBED and it worked fine on the Shadow.

Nope. To my knowledge, not any public Jbed rip supports M3G, only an older Jeodek. Read the MIDlet Bible.

Better Bluetooth performance. Better reception (at least for me, running sleuth v3 with radio 1.64.08.21). Threaded SMS (not sure I like it, can't delete without going back to home sms/mms message screen). Device seems more responsive. Canconnect to domain resources, Program Management?, Better task/process manager....
But really more like upgrade to second edition, than full upgrade. But it does seem to be better.

I would have to say there is better battery life than in WM6.
Mainly because of the Radio's etc.
When I am in a 3G area and on the phone I would see my battery diminish quite significantly. Now it goes down just a little faster than with EDGE/GPRS.

First, that interface you talk about isn't there bub. That interface is called Manilla & that's only for VGA SP's & PIE is exactly the same interface as always. Just a zoom feature has been added + you've been able to set your homepage since PPC2002.
The changes aren't that grand. Unless you really know how to mod & hack the device stick with 6.0 for now. If you really must try it, then I suggest using Sleuth's V3.0 WM6.1. It's the best of 'em in my opinion & the network setup is automated. It's also a very clean ROM.

actually that interface he refered to is actually the interface for the wm6.1 for smartphones, not for manila. that whole list is actually the list of changes for smartphones, not mw6.1 professional

boo. Allows to be charged seperately for using phone as modem for a computer. I'm sure there will be some way around that.

(at last) the ability to set your own homepage in Internet Explorer, plus you can now zoom into pages and the interface has been cleaned up.

[RESOLVED] Pinch zoom on video possible?

Hi,
I've seen a detailed video review of th HD2 on a French site that demonstrated pinch zoom on videos.
I tried on my HD2 but it doesn't work.
Any ideas? Need to do something first to activate?

This is by far the best presentation of the HD2 I've seen, excellent. It was taken during the launch of MSW65 by Microsoft.
Move to 11'20'' to see the pinch zoom working on a video.

I swear I saw a post which told you the reg keys to get pinch to zoom back in video/internet exploer but I cant find them

In this video, the pinch-to-zoom functionality is provided by Virtual Desktop (the HTC generic zoomer) and it can be enabled with Zoomer (or manually in the registry). I did it just fine with Zoomer on mine.

I think they removed it in the shipped ROM...

You can either use Zoomer, or do it by hand with a registry editor, in HKLM\Software\HTC\TouchGL\VirtualDesktop\WhiteList, add a key HTCAlbum (for example) and put a String value named ProcName with the appname as value (HTCAlbum.exe for example). Then you have to softreset the device.
Since editing the registry can be hazardous, it's better to use Zoomer.

Found it! With zoomer, but you have to activate it on the HTC media player, not just the windows media player.
