What browser is this? - General Topics

take a look at this picture of the new XDA Comet running WM6. I want to know what browser its showing on the device.
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=confirmed-o2-germany-to-release-the-o2-xda-comet-early-october
my apologies for posting this in the wrong forum...i realized after posting that there's probably better places to post a question regarding software that is being run on a device that is not a wizard.
mods, feel free to move this thread to wherever you think it best fits.

look like picsel , but as far as i know , picsel is only for samsung ... i don't know then ( maybe a new version of deepfish )

Given the image fits to the curve of the screen housing, I guess it's just a photoshop job. If it was an LCD image it would have 90 degree corners and would not be 100% to the edge of the housing.

Picsel also doesn't (natively) go fullscreen, so it's probably Photoshopped. There are a number of good browsers that will go fullscreen though...

You've said too much Vijay, how can Picsel go fullscreen? (and also is it possible to browse the web without being online? I mean the history pages, just like in PIE)
Thanks

The latest version of picsel, hacked to install on any WM device, is NATIVELY full screen. You have to tap and hold for everything. Picsel is not a great browser, it's main purpose is as a file viewer. It's not great at THAT, either.

Agreed. See my related review at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1213451&postcount=20 for a review of a, as far as native full screen support is concerned, earlier version.

As has been explained in the Web Browsing Bible ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1213451&postcount=20 ), the Picsel browser doesn't do ANY caching. Therefore, no history pages either.

On a QVGA device, without frames and copy/paste support, maybe. Otherwise, particularly if you have a VGA device, go for something else; for example, Opera Mobile or, to a lesser degree, the PIE + new (!) PIEPlus 2.2 combo OR NetFront 3.4 TP.
Please see my previous articles & comparisons of all these browsers so that you'll see what their particular strengths / weaknesses are and how they compare; these articles can all be found here in the forum.
pieplus works good for me. minimo is more than my device likes to handle (plus bad bookmark support).

Yup, Minimo runs pretty slow on some models / ROM versions.
Minimo is very slow to load but once it has, it is fine on my orbit overclocked of course. I like to use tabs so it is handy. Loads more features than PIE.
For me, the best browser is the almost new Opera Mobile 8.65. It got new options to download images and to import IE Favorites, among other new things, and it's very fast.
Could you please post a link to the Opera 8.65 for pocket PC.
I have checked their site and the latest version yet available for download is 8.60 which I am already using and it provides no way to import the Internet explorer favourite links. So I guess 8.65 may be a beta version. A link for download would be most helpful, though I could see the version 8.65 for the Symbian S60 which will obviously not work for us the PPC users.
Thanks and Regards

Here is the link, with the new features. But it's true that when you try to download, the version is 8.60u2 (?).

Yeah, it's the old 8.60u2 only, last modded last December.
Where did you acquire your beta from? Is there a public link / source anywhere?

I got it from a blog pointing to the page that I posted before and to a download link. But the download link is dead. So I guess that it may it be a pre-release version. Another thing, It doesn't asks for a registration code. It's very strange.
It runs very well (except the flash support that doesn't runs or I don't know how to make it runs). Even the "old" trick to translate cache and other files to the SD card runs well...
I got the CAB in my Desktop so, if someone wants to try, it I will upload it.

Menneisyys' comment: sorry, as a moderator, I'm also responsible (to some extent) for what files the XDA-Dev forum (or, at least, the threads I contribute to and, therefore, am bound to know the contents of) contains. This is why I've removed the link after speaking to the Opera folks: the file turned out to be a pre-release betatest version, in no way to be distributed. That is, someone from the betatest team has leaked the pre-production, NDA'd test version - at least this is what I think the case is.
Thanks again for the URL and the effort you've provided me the file (it's really appreciated); sorry, again, for my having to remove the link.
Could you please also remove the file from RapidUpload as well? (If it takes too much effort, then, don't do it. Just don't spread the URL.)
Thanks!
BTW, in the meantimne, I've edited my post

Widgets App for PPC?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ww4xatwrNs
I was browsing Youtube for things having to do with Windows Mobile, when I came across that comparison video between the Iphone and Windows Mobile. One of the topics was "widgets", and for the Iphone half, the Iphone "home" screen was shown, while for the WM section, a nice, slick looking application used to view photos from Flickr and search Wikipedia was shown, at 2:19 in the video. Any one have an idea/link to that application? Sure would be nice to play with on my phone

The application is called Widsets, it runs on Java.

Free and works with midlet manager on Wizard.
This widset is very interesting.. I wonder why is it in such a low profile in the xda-dev world.
thanks for the link, i'm gonna play around with WidSets and see how it goes. by the way,
@sean.t.oleary
you may have been talking about the Picsel Browser that was taken from a Samsung phone and now works on other WM Phones. Do a Search for it, it's here at xda-dev.
@hanmin
i agree, i thought i would find this fairly easily on these forums, but i didn't find a thing
Tried installing widsets - it forced me to install the jad for the iPaq hx4600 which doesnt seem to work right on my ppc (i730). Anyone have a different jad I can try?

Have you tried SubliMobi RSS Reader (http://www.sublimobi.com) ? It

Has anyone tried Widsets on XDA Orbit yet? Mine just shows a blank screen.

just tested on my herald and it is running quite smoothly.

Windows Mobile Web Browsers

Hi people,
I know of pocket explorer, and the opera release, but is there any other webbrowsers out there that are any good?
What i am looking for is something like the iphones safari. That would be nice
Pocket Explorer
Opera
Deepfish - damn shame this was never continued!
Cheers
Opera have 2 releases, you didn't mention which one you have. Opera Mobile is one of them but its not free, its good for tabbed browsing and downloads but personally i can't get along with it as it runs slow on my handset and often has script errors, plus struggles with desktop pages and uses alot of data. Opera Mini is the other one and i personally think its amazing. You can load up full web pages quickly and easily and it allows you to zoom in and out of the pages so you can view them like you would on your desktop. It uses very low amounts of data so its cheap to use, plus its free to download.
I personally use opera on my handset as it works well with windows, its the best thing so far anyway.
If your thinking of something more along the lines of the safari (iphone) experience, there is nothing at this time that matches it exactly, but there are similar programs you can get hold of that have been around a little while like Picsel Browser. Which can load up full pages (but cost you alot of data), and renders the pages pretty well, plus you can scroll with your finger and zoom in and out of pages without a stylus. I used to use this browser but i'm now totally hooked on Opera Mini.
I'm sure there are some other browsers out there but these two i mentioned are the only 2 i consider worth mentioning.
PS. Deepfish is similar to Opera mini, its optimises pages server side to make them smaller (data wise anyway), but i think opera have stollen the game from microsoft, thus them stopping any more work on the project, from what we can see anyway!
Hope this all helps btw

Personally I don't use opera mini, because it doesn't come for the htc p4350, i can run the generic, but I have to startup java first, then opera, and with every text area (including adress) it opens a new typing window..

That's the same way it works on my wing. However, as I'm browsing from a phone, I really don't have the highest of expectations for my browsing experience, and all things considered, opera mini is the best option I've found thus far.

Look for Picsel browser, it works almost exactly as the iPhone safari, the zoom, the kinetic scrolling, all that stuff. Execpt it's made for only samsung phones so they don't make it availible for everybody. I have aa copy, but i don't think i can post it here. Type it in google, there a lot of them there. That's where i found mine. And by the way Picsel dosent just view web pages, it also views pictures, word, excel, pdf and powerpoint. Goodluck

well..guys i got the file..but havent test it yet..well..atleast not yet..lolz jus typed in Picsel Browser 1.0.5 download..nd got it ;D

Opera Mini 5 (beta)...cool

I just downloaded opera mini 5 from www.opera.com and I am fking shocked by the smoothness and user friendliness....for a moment I thought I was on safari/iphone.
Awesome job Opera Team!!!
Please keep us posted as to how it handle sites with flash, downloads, videos, etc.
I prefer skyfire because there is little it can't handle, I just don't care for the interface.

Here is a test....
go to www.championsparkplugs.com using the browser of your choice.
In my comparision testing, opera mini came out the winner because it renders the page perfectly in mobile mode and focusses on the search spark plug and the combobox drop down is rendered full page when you click on it making it easy to select the right entry.....

And this is what I mean...see attached screen shots.
What good is a browser when it is not finger friendly? If I wanted to see the full website like I do on a PC, I would do it on my PC.
The mobile phone is a tool that should help you when you need the information and you do not have access to a PC.
I use this example because I was at Home depot to buy a spark plug for my lawn power. I was not sure which plug to buy so I went to champion spark plug website using IE, and then Opera 9.7 and Opera Mini 5 WM Native beta.
You can see which one was way better engineered to help me get my information without pulling out the stylus and a magnifying glass.

I will have to disagree here.
Try www.aa.com or www.amtrak.com book a ticket or look up a flight/train schedule.
same for wikipedia. the text formatted to fit the screen and all I need to do is scroll up or down, not sideways.
Opera mini in mobile mode does a wonderful job.
Skyfire does not do such a great job to render it in mobile mode and is great for rendering a "pc-look-alike" screen, but I will need to zoom and/or need a stylus to get the same thing done.
As of now, I have both on my ATT Pure. Use them depending upon what I need to use it for.

I will have to disagree with your disagreeing as we are really not disagreeing...
Just responding to Inman's post and maybe it's a little my fault as I did not properly explain myself. Websites that use flash and videos can not be accessed by Opera Mini properly as you will lose that content. That is why I would recommend Skyfire over Opera Mini in those instances. However, I do use Opera Mini as my main browser and switch to Skyfire when I need that "PC-look-alike" experience...

opera mini 5.1 is the bomb
I have tried the new release of opera mini 5.1. The web browser is the fastest mobile browser I have ever used on my HTC pure. It makes all the other browsers like IE, opera mobile 10, skyfire, bolt, android, and iphone's safari look like a joke. Only one downside, it cannot run flash. It download videos and connects to streaming media easily though.
Thank you for introducing this perfect explorer. It's really very fast, I made it my default explorer.

[Q] Browser with flash capability that can play news.bbc.co.uk videos

Dear All,
I've read the previous similar post "Watch flash videos on news.bbc.co.uk?", but it doesn't answer my question:
Is there any browser capable of playing the videos on news.bbc.co.uk? I have tried stock opera, opera 10, opera mini, internet explorer, and Uzard. Skyfire is no longer supported on Windows Mobile 6.5.
Does anyone know of a way to do this?
Many thanks for any help you can offer!
Harry
dont know much about BBc but UZARD is one new browser and also UCBRowser which support flash...go ahead and try em out !
how about a browser that supports flash that plays online streaming pr0nz?
I'm looking for a browser which support flash too.
I've tried uzardBrowser but it's not fully working with Facebook and some other websites.
Dorothy browser seems nice but it doesn't support flash...
UCBrowser, just the same as uzardbrowser, but faster !
Pants! I cannae wait for phones to advance a little bit more!
I don't understand why is it so difficult to play flash videos on a cellphone like that one ...
Skyfire? not tried it for BBC, but it does play Flash.
Skyfire no longer supports the windows mobile 6.5 operating system!
Boot into Android, all flash sites and video work perfectly....
The browser (Dolphin HD) is the only reason I use Android, apart from the odd Angry Birds session, if WM had a decent browser I could save a lot of battery power.
Is it possible to dual boot - i.e. have both WM 6.5 & Android on your HD2?
