Quick question on the SENSE UI on the 192mb RAM - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

I pre-ordered my myTouch 3G via the US T-mo about a week and a half ago.
However I just found out that the US version of the myTouch (Magic) has the 192mb RAM instead of the 288mb RAM.
I don't really care much about the numbers but,
I REALLY REALLY wanted the SENSE UI on my myTouch.
So here's my question: will running the SENSE UI on the 192mb RAM myTouch (Magic) result in laggy performance? or will it be able to run it smoothly?

At this point in time its laggy performance. Its not too bad though. The rom just acts as if it has six widgets running all the time. If that helps you get an idea of the lag.

icic. is that due to the fact that the rom is not official and not developed all the way? or is it safe to say that the lag will not "fix" even after it has been made official?

It will all depend if HTC makes it available for the 32B boards...

Any chance of getting a port with samsung's latest touchwiz+gb ROM?

As the title says, will we have a ROM with samsung's latest ROM with touchwiz and gingerbread? I am specifically interested in touchwiz because it has gpu acceleration in browser and the UI in general. I came from a Desire in hope that I will get a better phone. Being able to play the latest games is good, but laggy browser, laggy custom launcher and frequent RAM memory leaks makes me want to trade this phone for something else. Its a huge epic fail from Google imo.
Not sure why i posted, might need to get some sleep

I don't see why it couldn't be done.
I would do it if I had the knowledge, but I don't so I'm going to leave it to the professionals.

Are you running stock? Cause my phone is fine with stock I find it more stable then anything else the only thing I hate is the camera app and the ones in the market takes too long to take a picture, beside that as stock android goes is perfect for me at least

While I would also love to see TouchWiz (I had a Vibrant before it, TouchWiz > stock imo), I don't have any lag issues with my Nexus S as I had with my Vibrant. Did you make sure nothing is on in the background eating up CPU and thus causing everything to slow down?

Damn you said you like touchwiz? Wow first person I know that says that you really need to try sense then

I loved touchwiz.. Gave me a reason to root and instantly remove it.
Check the dev section, if you have any knowledge you can even help out... seems the guy is stuck on a few things and is busy with exams...

Yes I've seen jonathon's topic, found it after I posted this one, sorry for not searching before
It's not about the cpu usage, that's fine, I'm only having memory leaks (ram). And the browser sucks when it comes to rendering images and flash content, it lags like hell.

Looking at buying a Nexus S and coming from a Desire myself, this worries me.
Is this guy exaggerating, or is this really the experience? I was expecting it to be just the same as the Desire, if not better.

Desire runs sense right ? and is way different story, if you use to cm7 then nexus s is great latest update all the time and most likely get ice cream before anything else, if you don't. Care about SD storing and sense this phone makes perfect sense if you do then better go with HTC

Yeah that's what I thought I had the evo 4G supersonic and sense have some nice features but I went with cm7 I like it a lot but after a week the rom will run into bugs and it will drive me nuts like whencalling the proximity sensor wouldn't work right or get stock in alot of apps, so when they announced this phone I waited cause I don't like T-Mobile now is in sprint so I got it and not bugs and I miss the camera app from sense or cm7 but I'm happy tho

Believe me, coming from a Desire you'll feel a huge difference in web browsing. The browser in the stock android isn't gpu accelerated as in HTC Sense, so loading flash content or big pictures is practicably impossible, it slows down the phone so much!
Another issue that is bothering me is that the Nexus S has in reality about 300mb of RAM (~200mb RAM are used by the GPU). The system uses about half of it, so you're left with 150mb RAM to handle the apps, which is extremely low. Especially when you open the browser, you're sometimes left with less then 50mb free, which slows down the phone. So everytime I browse the internet, I have to manually kill the app after I'm done, cause I run into a memory leak.
Also custom launchers (launcher pro, adw and others), when filled with 4x4 widgets and have about 4-5 screens, scrolling is not smooth at all. This is because the UI isn't gpu accelerated as well, its handled by the CPU. So unless you OC it a bit, it will be slugish.
I'm pretty disappointed in certain things after coming from an HTC phone (their UI really kicks ass), but the nexus S has a superb display (be it SLCD or S-Amoled), has far much better hardware, enough internal memory (16gb is enough for everyone imo) and a much better battery life, that I can tell it for sure.
And still, all in all, if I knew nexus has these problems with the RAM and browser, I would've probably bought another HTC Device, maybe the Incredible S. That doesn't mean I'm not satisfied with this phone tho, can't wait for icecream sandwich.

[Q]How much of a difference does 256mb of ram make?

Hi, I've decided to go with an Optimus Black. My other choice was the Desire S. I've noticed that the specs are pretty much the same except for the RAM. How much does the extra 200+mb of ram make a difference?
Sorry if posted in the wrong section.
Thanks.
I don't know which has the higher amount but i guarantee the Desire S would require more. Sense isn't exactly a lightweight U.I and the Desire S uses the latest (heaviest) version of it.
a question like this depends on how much your adding to your phone. plus multitasking would be your biggest issue here
Get the one with more ram, you'll need it..

[Q] Non Contract upgrade phone

I am looking to upgrade my Tmobile myTouch 3g Slide. I am not due for a contract upgrade till next year. I was looking at the HD2, myTouch 4G, and the Vibrant. I am wanting to run a gingerbread sense rom on it like the salsa port I am running on my slide. Problem with the slide is no room for user apps when running a sense rom.
So my question is, what of those options gives me the most of what I want. Large user app space, fast processor, and a gingerbread sense rom.
Thanks for your help.
Bump. Anyone got an opinion? I don't think there is a sense rom for the vibrant which sucks. it has the most user storage. Guess that means the mt4g or hd2. What do you all think?

[Q] Is 768mb RAM ok or worrysome??

Hello. Im considering picking up a Sensation 4G, but the only thing im worried about is the amount of RAM available compared to its closest competitors. The SGS2, Atrix and EVO 3D which is its almost twin brother and it has 1gb RAM as opposed to the S4G. Is this enough to easily handle day to day use?? Because from what i read, it gets around 158mb free on a fresh boot as oposed to its compatitors which may get 300+ to handle the load
The QHD and Sense 3.0 are plenty reasons IMO to have at least 1gb RAM to handle it and im a bit bummed to hear that the mytouch 4g has the same amount and nowhere as near as much workload to handle.
I may be exaggerating when i say this, but i just got a HTC Mogul flashback lol
Am i crazy for being a bit concerned as if i have nothing to worry about, or does anyone feel the same way??
Sorry to ramble so much
Cheers
i've had the sensation for 5 days now, and from all indications, it runs extremely fast and flawless. but the whole 768MB ram is a serious letdown for me. i'm still contemplating whether i should keep it or return it. i love the device, and i think in all honesty the ram shouldnt be an issue at all. however, i have seen where if you open the browser, then some other apps, then go back to the browser, it reloads the page, meaning it shut the browser down to reclaim memory. thus the reloading takes a lil time to fetch it again from the network. a lilttle annoying.
On a fresh boot with all of my apps installed it shows over 275mg of memory available. I think it's fine.

really?? hmmm i asked Aaron from phonedog . com and he told me about 160. i might feel a lot better if 275 seems to be closer to the actual number since i bet once the bootloader is unlocked, it will be much better. ill check it out tomorrow and see. Any clue on why people say that the evo 3d is noticibly faster??? my first guess would be the ram unless im missing something
ps: are you using Sense launcher or 3rd party?? thanx

I'm using Sense. If a picture will make you feel better I can take one. I have all of the animations turned off along with the animated weather and it runs very smooth. I also don't fill up 7 pages worth of widgets so that could be another contributing factor.
For everyday tasks I'm not worried at all. However I noticed that Dungeon Defenders uses about 122mb of ram and it caused the entire phone to crash because all the ram got depleted. How are you gonna tell me that a freaking smartphone game needs that much ram?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
My sensation displays different values for available RAM in different places. Right now, the quick settings menu is displaying only 118mb free which sounds bad. However, the running applications tab in the settings menu displays 310 MB RAM available (even with xda app running in the background while I type this post). There is probably some caching of the file system going on which is released to running applications on demand (similarly to how Windows Vista and 7 fill all available memory with file system caching).
I'm really not too concerned with the 768 MB of RAM on sensation, I think it is adequate to future-proof the phone for a couple of years.

I have come from the Desire HD and the improvement is worth the switch, however i am concearned the the availible RAM shown in the task manager is only 558mb not 768mb.
Is anybody else showing this?
Unless im missing something.................. Nobody else seems to be talking about this differance in RAM.
Having said that i am VERY happy with its performance......
I don't know what the Task Manager shows, i have a feeling it's not correct.
On my Sensation i always have over 300MB free (in Settings menu).
I also had DHD before, i did compare them and i didn't see much difference in memory usage with same apps installed on both phones.
About not all 768mb shown in memory, this is because some of it is reserved for GPU, this is normal.

Shouldn't be needed with a powerhouse like this.
Point is that stuff isn't optimized, which is partly android's fault too.
But if the evo can have 1g, why not the sensation...
Give root + sense with lockscreen and clock only.

Not androids, HTCs fault. Mind you as someone already said, android is not optimized for 2x core, hopefully 2.4 update will be. (hopefully we will get it)

That's what I heard as well. It has a graphics chip swell so but not sure if that's being used. I read that Its taking out reserve memory so it's not using all 350mb but that's what I've read.
Once we get a build that has sense stripped we will be fine.
I don't believe RAM will affect performance much if at all.. the only concern is the phone shutting down essential background applications.
There's already a thread about people reporting Sense itself restarting quite often.
If HTC at least gave us similar RAM of competition people wont blame them for this dumb spec choice.

On a fresh boot you will get lots of ram but soon as things start kicking in you will end up with around 150 mark free which is a slight worry and soon as you run program or install things that soon goes down, I have had mine under 100 so far.
I was watching a review of the Evo 3D and forgetting the 3d side of it the phone is pretty much a Sensation but I notice they have upped that too 1gb of ram and that phone is smooth as butter, sense is super smooth unlike the Sensation so I have been thinking did the make a mistake with the amount of ram on this and put it right on the Evo.
I have until next friday to decide if I want to keep this and I think the lack of ram could be the deal breaker for me as I have a GS2 also and I tend to use Launcher pro on that, the GS2 makes this thing look laggy and slow but i do like the Sensation.
HTC need to optimize Sense 3.0........ it's a hog.
it's been showing around 130-150 mb consistently with everything killed.
but so far pretty smooth even with multiple apps open.
I do wish they had put in 1gb... who knows what hoggish apps are coming out in the future.
but considering LG 2x and Xperia Play both only have 512mb and they are more or less made for gaming, I guess 768 is ok, though both of them don't have hog Sense 3.0 running.
It certainly does suck it up Sense, on the GS2 I am using 398 of 837mb available with lots of background things running and when I free the memory I am using 244 of 837, like sense some of the ram is taken up with the gpu I guess.
If they had put that extra in to make 1gb total and around 837 I guess like the GS2 would be available we would be fine on the ram front.

You can thank all of that pre-installed bloatware. I can't wait until we get root so I can delete it all.
I'm just hoping 768 MB will be enough to run Ice Cream Sandwich when it's released.

quick! hd2 or my touch 4g?

I have 2 hours till an auction ends, and i would like the input of more educated people.
HTC HD2, or My touch 4g 4gb?
I'm leaning towards the my touch because it has more internal memory, and an extra 256k ram, and ram is always nice.
Thoughts??
Hd2. It has amazing development. There are already a few stable ics ROM, and now a jellybean beta rom
Sent from my oc'd cm10 nexus 7
seems like the screens and digitizers go bad quite often with the hd2
Depends...
All I can say 100% is that yes, it is true that the HD2 does have great, stable ROMs, or so I've read. (Thanks rockaholic112 for pointing it out)
And although RAM is good, I have realized that ROMs make a huge impact on the phones performance, or CAN. If you were to get the myTouch, you'd DEFINITELY need to upload a custom ROM, even though you probably would have, nonetheless
For example, on my SGS4G, Temple Run doesn't run smoothly on any ROM, but as soon as I uploaded Slim ICS, it runs perfectly. Point being, RAM is important, but a well built ROM is also amazing to have too.
On the other side, some people don't like big screens. Do you? Or maybe the HD2 is too large for you. That's up to you, but some things to think of too.
yea, thanks for the input. And after some research on the roms and dev available, and watching some youtube videos, i've decided on the hd2. then i can dual boot with windows OS and play around with that too
HD2 would be good...
it seems that even after ages, it holds a respectable market value...
it is a cult device, so as to say...
can port anything on it...
digitizer/powerbutton problem apart, it has to be a marvellous device!
forever
HTC HD2:good:
Go for the HD2
