Can't open large maps using Memory-Map - General Topics

I have a problem opening large maps using Memory-Map V5. Forgive me for asking this question again. I know that has been asked elsewhere on this site but it seems to remain largely unanswered. I suspect that is because it has been posted in device specific forums thus may not have come to the attention of someone who can provide an answer, hence I thought it worth posting here. Additionally it appears to work differently between WM 6.1 and WM6.5 This has not been posted before and may provide the key to solving this.
Using Memory-Map on my Wizard with WM5 everything worked fine.
When I upgraded the Wizard to WM6.1 it would sometime load the full size map and sometimes it wouldn’t. The error message was “could not open file "\storage card\memory-map-os\qct\os50_disk04.qct". Sometimes I could re-load the map from the PC and it would work until I switched to a smaller map on the storage card then it wouldn’t re-open the full map. Quite honestly I thought the Wizard had some sort of corruption and didn’t realize this was an issue that other people experienced.
When I bought the Touch Pro it was running WM 6.1 and it wouldn’t open any map over say 100 Mb. I’ve now flashed the Touch Pro to WM 6.5 and it will load the full UK road map at 126Mb and any section of a map up to about 130 Mb.
I don’t understand why WM 6.5 seems to be able to handle a slightly bigger map file than WM 6.1 but hopefully this will help someone provide an answer to this problem.

How to make Pocket PC 2003 input software work on WM 5? (Celluon Laserkey)

I'm pissed. I ordered the Celluon Laserkey CL800BT as a mobile keyboard. But it appears it still has not had drivers/installation software created for WM 5. Nowhere on the seller's website did it mention this very critical piece of information. The Celluon website utterly fails to even mention the existence of WM 5 as something they either support or don't support, it's like they're stuck in 2003.
So, the question is... Is it possible to get this thing working on WM 5? I'm not sure if the input panel changes from 2003 to 5 are so big that the drivers supplied won't work or if it might be possible to just fiddle with the registry keys enough to get it to use the 2003 drivers. I figured out that certain registry structure changes were made in how the input software gets listed and so I tried to "upgrade" the entry for the Laserkey and that got the "Projection Keyboard" appearing in the list, but when I select it it just switches to the built-in WM keyboard input.
So, please, all you super clever people, help!!!
Quincy
Wow, that's a neat product. Thing is there is no difference in software keyboards between WM 5 and 2003 but what you have is a hardware keyboard that connects via BT.
If the drivers don't work it means they don't support your devices hardware or BT stack.
Unfortunately short of writing new drivers i do not see a solution to this.
I assume you tried installing it using the WM 2003 setup?
If it doesn't work i think you should ask for your money back.
Thanks, yeah, I tried the install for PPC 2003 and that completes, but as I mentioned the "Projection Keyboard" option in the SIP list does NOT appear. So I figured how what registry tweaking would make it appear but selecting it doesn't work. I changed the registry to point to the DLL I presumed should be called (there were only 2 that came with it, and I tried both) but nothing. I assume the SIP hooks into the DLL/etc. have changed from 2003 to 5.
It is an amazing product, if only it worked. Celluon must be in bad shape or something for them not to have current drivers (I contacted their tech support and have not heard back yet...). There are few things more annoying than having in your hands something that is amazingly cool and having absolutely no ability to use it.
I talked to the seller and it looks like they'll take it back, but I'm stunned they wouldn't have a big warning or at least a little warning/mention of the fact that it won't work on the current PPC OS.
So, warning to all, don't buy the Celluon Laserkey if you've got WM 5!
Quincy
One thing I just thought of, probably should have mentioned it before (this is really stupid of me):
Maybe the DLL you are messing with is not a SIP DLL at all? This is a hardware keyboard and it should work no matter what software keyboard is selected.
So try to do a clean installation (so your registry tweaks won't get in the way) and just open Word for example and type.
Also maybe it needs parring or some special BT settings?
Good suggestion, Levenum. I don't know exactly it is supposed to work, but I do know that you use the SIP selector to choose the "Projection Keyboard" and then it takes input from the keyboard. So, I'm pretty sure it really does act as a SIP. I've tried re-installing a few times, along the lines you suggest, having cleared everything out but still no luck.
I guess I'll wait another couple days and ship it back. I've written several times to Celluon but have yet to hear anything.
Quincy
Hmm, if they have written it this way (its possible of course) it would be a very stupid approach.
I had a chance to use a couple of hardware keyboards and they usually work separately from the SIP system be it BT or IR keyboard.
Strange that company creating a product primarily for mobile devices seems to know so little about them.
I too have the same problem with my IPAQ hx2490b running WM5.
I have found this web site which hosts a Celluon Laserkey driver for WM5 which installs OK without any registry changes.
The problem is that when the Projection Keyboard is seleted from the Input list and from the keyboard icon, I get a message to say BTM Cannot get current state. If I exit from the driver screen, I then get an error to say that the serial port is in use by another device which should be stopped before trying to use the Projection Keyboard again.
I have removed all of my other BT pairings, done a hard reset and started from scratch to no avail.
The CL800BT pairs OK until I load the driver. If anyone has any ideas for a workaround or has had success in getting this keyboard to work under WM5 I would be grateful for your advice.
I have emailed Celluon but have had no reply. The UK distributor has been trying to sort this for me for a week with no success.

Dear all,
there is a WM5-driver on the plawa page aviable -
and it's working as well on WM6 (testet with Hermes)!
okay, that's not a surprise - but the german shortcuts
are working as well!
can I have a link to the plawa page you refer to? I want to use it on wm6 too.
thanks

tom tom mobile 6

i have tom tom mobile 6 with windows mobile 5 in qtek 2020 but when start the application the display black.
Please help me please
thank you
You need an update file for tomtom.exe. search you will find here some where
Have you tried TomTom 6.1?
I had the same problem with 6.0 and had to use Buzz's modified exe. But when i loaded 6.1 it was ok.
Hopefully it will work for you to.
tom tom 6
thanks but i don't no where is tom tom 6.1 can you send me link?
Hi,
I had the same problem with my Tomtom on my M1000.
I searched on internet and found a little program developped by a great developper!
In fact, it seems that when Tomtom starts, it modifies two registry keys.
I think I've found it on this forum but not sure.
The soft is called TTN Backlight Fix.
I cannot attach it because my Personnal computer has burned so I need to change hardware to get my datas back.
So you can try to search this little fix and instead of launching TTN directly you launch this fix which starts TTN for you.
Hai,
i have done this with a hex-editor. Succes garanteed!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=261317&page=2&highlight=tomtom+backlight
The hex-editor trick worked for me too.. allthough I am very curious if this is a bug in Tomtom 6 or in Windows Mobile. Or could it be a problem with the Rom-image we are using?
Since I have an official Tomtom 6 package, I will call them tomorrow and ask them for a solution.
I will keep you guys posted here
too bad, apparently I made it too easy for the supportcrew of TomTom to answer my question. They blamed my powersaveoptions. I rephrased the question and resubmitted the request. Let's see what happens next.
cheers..
so, a little update.. after alot of back and forth.. we're still nowhere
I even mailed the modified .exe. Now we happily wait for their second level support. 2nd level's first reaction was that I should hard-reset and reinstall.. which was obviously no solution (more like basic microsoft troubleshooting: if it doesn't work, reboot. If it still doesn't work, reinstall)
They came back from that, so we now await their newest ideas..
Will keep you posted.
greetz,

What's so great about WM6?

Hi,
While I am waiting for my MDA Pro to arrive, I have been reading a lot in the Universal section (have a BA myself).
May I ask for some valid reasons why someone would want to use homebrewed WM6 releases instead of official/customized WM5?
I do understand the fun it is to try out new things, but is it really worth it? I did not find many posts that would clear this question.
Thanks,
vma
WM6.0...
The new look and a lot faster device...
Is there any feature that won't be available with WM6, that did work fine in WM5?
Thanks,
vma
Video call isn't working yet.

The way I see it, WM6 may or may not work for you and may or may not do it for you. Try it. You can always go back to WM5. Most people don't.....
Well .... the simple answer is that I did a lot of searching and reading, and finally tried it out for myself.
I asked this very question a while ago right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1130569&postcount=88
And came to the follwowing conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1155497&postcount=89
In the conclusion, the thing about the Bluetooth Stack / Voice Command - it was actually Voice Command that was the problem and this issue was fixed in Jrwightmcps' 2.02.00 WWE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256
Crossbow ONLY!
Tell you the truth... i see the new WM6 is better eye-catching GUI not to mention the enhancement in the functionality and other usability such as email related functions. I know that MS wont just upgrade for no obvious reason nor for desktop OS compatibility.
Yet i reckon i wont -never- go back to magento! Crossbow ONLY!
@nvatvani:
Indeed your posts where the only ones I read, that contained some usefull info about the subject.
No offense to all the other members of course!
I was simply wondering about what to do when my MDA Pro arrives: replace the German firmware with a WWE WM5 one or go straight ahead to WM6 without even looking at WM5.
Also, I had some problems with my Blue Angel, when I tried WM5 on it: it may have been a coincidence, but one day after the upgrade the screen went mad and totally messed up. Only 1 Hardreset in about 100 tries would bring it back to normal for some period of time and even reflashing it with WM5 or 2003SE would not make it work normal again. The screen would get messed up suddenly for no particular reason. At the end I had to send it in for repair, which was actually a good thing, as I complained about the loose stylo and bad working hardkeys, all within warranty. I got a new key-pcb, backside and they reflashed the device with 2003SE. I posted this issue in the BA forum, but got no usefull hint. This means I am a little scared of upgrading to unofficial releases.
Other than that, I have no problems with flashing, as I do that on my other hobby (satellite receivers) frequently, including JTAG-operations for repairing bricked devices. The same applies to games consoles. (Note: I do not sell or benefit commercially from that activity and my goal is not to get illegal software or TV - not that you guy's get the wrong idea about me).
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Cheers,
vma
What Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 has and Windows Mobile 6 (the cooked ones, having tried them all) doesn't have, according to my experiences:
1. Videocalling - at least not a proper one
2. Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (the DUN profile)
3. Wireless Modem (yet some WM6 ROM's have it, although without shortcut in the start menu)
4. Cyberon Voice Dial by default (some WM6 ROM's have it by default, others will need a 500kB CAB to activate it)
The reason why I went back to "good old" WM5 is mainly the reliability. Ok, the OS may be a bit slower here and there, but it has all the functionality (e.g. videocalls and Bluetooth DUN), and NEVER hangs. It just always works and that's what I desperately need right now.
---
The things Windows Mobile 6 has for me that 5.0 hasn't which I miss the most:
1. High resolution browsing in the normal Internet Explorer (I don't want to use alternatives)
2. HTML email support
3. The impressive speed of the OS
Applications like WM6's Windows Live and the superb Remote Desktop Client are also available for WM5, so I don't need to miss those, otherwise I sure would, and then I might have sticked with WM6.
The new sounds and GUI are great, but I don't really miss them, since that's not a true functional thing.
Having WM5 up and running again, without freezes and memory leaking and with full HTC Universal functionality, is enough for me to be happy with it and to stick with it. If there ever will be a ROM that actually ADDS Windows Mobile 6 on top of all of this (without a single registry tweak or CAB fix needed), then it's the time for me to upgrade again.
If such a ROM will ever see the daylight, since it won't be officially available for the Universal, I don't know. I think the HTC X7500 (Athena) will be there sooner (April 2007 over here), and that one will have a official WM6 upgrade for sure. That'll be my next one, so until then: WM5 for my Universal!
So far for my opinion.
why do I use WM6

To be honest, I used them all and later delteted them after 5 2 hours. They leak a lot, ram is at minimum and useless third party applications, and a lot fo thing sodn't really work or missing (I just want a vanill aone without 3rd party applications).
Except for one rom, Darkforce, it is fast and furious, and so far I have using it for two days; battery usage is good, and no leaks. However, no video calling, and no way to set com ports for bluetooth devices. any1 has this problem?
However, common to all ROMS, no video calling, old calculator, speed dial messed up (some work and some don't), wireless connection bubble missing (yes you can install a cab but I don't want to do that).
<Mind you, contrary to other reports, I never had any freezes with any rom.
The thing that attracts me is HTML in email, High resolution mode in explorer, better remote desktop connectivity.
So I thhink I am sticking with DarkForce ROM, so far so good.
Thx

WM6 vs WM5?

I'm about to buy my first WM phone. I have had several WM PDAs, my current one being the HP 4705 running WM5. Can anyone tell me if the memory management in WM6 has been improved over WM5? I find my PDA grinding to a near halt almost every day and am forced to do a soft reset. I also notice my memory meter slowly dropping throughout the day (memory leaks), even if I don't get one of those irritating slowdowns. I'm guessing in a typical day I do a soft reset 3-4 times. Has this issue been fixed/improved with WM6?
Thnks.

Is there NO one using WM6???? Or am I in the wrong forum?
it probably depends on your device and wich drivers and software combination you're using. I'm not sure but I think only one or two devices have the official wm6 available. You may bet a better answer on the wizard wm6 forum.
I think you will find a lot of the people on XDA-Developers that use Windows Mobile 6 do so from an unofficial release of WM6 on an existing device that shipped with WM5. As a result it's not very easy to evaluate issues like memory usage. Further to this, the quality of WM is highly dependent on the device, the operator that customised it for the device, and the minor version + build number. You might describe it as something of a crap shoot, which unfortunately I would doubt gets better with WM6 (but I might be wrong).
The good news is, certainly if you get a HTC device, this forum is excellent for helping upgrade to an alternative version that may improve things.
Your questions were quite difficult to answer. You see no I don't have to re-set 4 or 5 times under WM6, but then I never had to do that under WM5 either.
I can't possibly comment on the internal operatings and memory management, all I can say is that WM6 runs much faster than WM5 used to, and feels like a good upgrade. But that's not what you asked.
I still use a Third party task manager for closing applications like I did with WM5. I don't think much has changed in regards to automatically unloading apps to free up memory, but that's not how I use my Artemis anyway.
WM6 was called "6" purely for marketing reasons.
From technical standpoint its much closer to AKUs - mostly it differs in built-in applications. Contrary to AKUs it also provides changed UI visuals.
Hovewer it still uses CE 5 kernel, and internal OS version for it is "5.2"
All internal architecture is same with WM5.
Menneisyys report that the bluetooth stack in org wm6 roms are better then wm5 and doctored wm6's

SMS Vulnerability impacting WM devices?

I read from this article:http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/31/apple-to-release-fix-for-iphone-sms-vulnerability-on-saturday/
It says the vulnerability impacts our WM phone as well. Anyone has checked that and if fix is available? Tried using Google to search our beloved forum but didn't pop up anything yet ..
I read about this too and if it can be patched that quickly on Android then I'd hope it should also be a quick patch on WinMo, especially as the SMS functionality is implemented in pretty much the same way apparently.
Plus XDA has people who are working with Android so maybe they can share what changes Google have made?
I am fairly surprised this hasn't been picked up by the technical bods here as it is quite a major vulnerability and Apple and Google have patched their OS's so WinMo is trailing behind... unless someone knows of a patch thats already been done?
I'm going to PM some mods I know ..
Any response from them yet?
Our good Dave is going to check with some resident expert.. and hopefully some lights to be shed.
From the info I gathered, it actually result in DOS for iPhone and Android, but no news/confirmation on WM yet. So we don't know. However, given the method explored by the author, it's likely at minimum resulting the same (DOS, phone hung, etc.). I think, for phone user, this is critical, as you can't spend your day checking the phone always just to make sure it's still connecting to network/operators.
From what I read the vulnerability could allow for remote code execution including reading your phone's storage and activating cameras and gps. So someone could write an app that send this information back via the data connection and that person could be watched and tracked without knowing that there were compromised.
This is obviously worst case scenario but I for one would sit on the paranoia side of the fence and get it plugged. If we can.
From what I got and discussion, it's mostly DOS.
However, IMO, it still scary. You can't be contacted nor SMS-ed without you realizing until you need to initiate call/ connection.
For someone most of the time on receiving side (doctors, etc) it's really a danger. I do hope our resident expert can find out something, as I don't think MS will be doing it.
You may want to read this article where they interview one of the guys that found the vuln...

Charlie: Collin's framework also works on Android and WinMobile. We found some denial of service bugs in Android (which we reported and are fixed) and a pretty bad bug in the way HTC WinMobile phones handle SMS messages containing the format specifier %n. That's a fun one because you don't need any special tools to send the malicious message, just use your phone to text your buddy with %n and their TouchFlo (application manager) will crash and won't come back up.

I believe the current HTC handsets come with WM6.1 now as standard, either HTC or Operator flavoured. As this is a forum for all HTC devices on WM5.0/6.0/6.1/6.5 can we have some testing done on stock ROM's on stock devices please?
I'm going to send a %n text to my buddy's phone and see.
At least now the thread is getting some attention. My concern is for people (like me) that rely more on receiving call/SMS than making call/sending SMS. A crashed network connection will result in no phone at all.
How'd the testing go and any movement on patching?
Just sent myself a %n message but nothing happened. On TPC v10.9 on M2D (Mega's M2D)
My friend is now using custom ROM .. so no try there. I don't have OEM that has M2D ..
What about just trying it on a bog standard WM6.1 OEM ROM from an operator.
Can do .. later perhaps when I'm changing ROM again. I thought it only crashes M2D? No OEM for Kaiser has M2D ..
Reviving this thread because iPhone is vulnerable. Not sure if IE also on our Kaiser? Opera?
