The ringtone must be in the windows directory, and depending on your ROM must be of a certain file type (wav, m4a), different roms allow different file types.
i find a curious thing in my rom, when i put a diferent format in windows directory the ringtones in the ringtones folder turn all available for that type, crazy thing lol
This is what I did when i got my Touch Diamond2.
I converted the mp3, i wanted as a sms-tone, to wma, put it in Windows\Rings. And then it was availible as an sms-tone.

I have set an MP3 to alert me when I get a phone call coming in but can see how to do it for a text message. I'm sure its' something obvious but I can't see it.
Any idea how to set it up please or even if it's possible?
A friend of mine pointed that out and I just noticed it. Any help?
create the file and place it in the Windows folder
I tried doing this but it cant seem to find the file in the windows folder..must it be in wav format or is mp3 ok?
I dont think it matters but mine are in WAV

No, you have to place it in \Application Data\Sounds. Afterwards it will be available in the list shown in settings for event sounds.

All that you must do is to put mp3 files in a folder called my documents, on device or on storage card an you will find in tones list
Not sure if you just kinda overlooked this, but while you can change your Ringtone for calls from the "Phone" option in settings, you have to go to "Sounds & Notifications" for text messages.
I just put my sound files in the root folder of the storage card and it shows up.
Must be a wav file, must be in windows directory for you to use it as a sms alert. Nothing else will do.
MP3 works as well - at least on my TP with stock HTC German ROM.

My mistake, you are correct. Had to put the MP3 in Windows>rings.
Must be new to WM6.1
If it's a long MP3 can you stop the music or does it carry on till the end of the file??

im using the fuze, with RRE 4.5 rom, with mine if i place my mp3 on the window root folder or in rings they work for phone rings, but not able to select on text message, so i did as you said, place my mp3 in application data\sounds and bingo they work. only downside is you have to hit the "end" call button. you can mute it with the volume buttons, so if a text come in and its in your holder you have to take it out and hit the end button. hope this helps

Why not find and employ the MP3 trimmer that comes on the Touch Pro in many markets - or edit on your desktop with any of the readily available programs? You could have it go on for - like 5 seconds, then quit.
Personally, I save songs for ring tones and use the jetson's doorbell for SMS and MMS and HAL from 2001 saying: "There is a message for you..." for incoming emails.
Hi all, I'm new to this forum and also new to my smart phone. I have an HTC Elf 0300. I'm trying to assign a sound to Notification/ MMS downloaded. I've looked at the existing sounds available and tried to find the folder they're in via ActiveSync to no avail. I've converted the mp3 I want to use to .amr and put it in the My Ringtones and My Voices folders. I can access the amr file if I want to change the ringtone notification but not for the MMS downloaded. I can only assume that one can't use anything other than what came with the phone. If you know different, please advise, many thanks.

Put your tones in the main windows folder, you will see that many of the tones already available to you are in wav/wma format.
Thanx Timmy, that worked, one learns as one goes along eh, lol.
I hope this is the right area to ask, and i apologize if not.
I just went from 1.5 (Magic) to 2.2 (Desire) and man, the first thing i noticed is how crappy the Froyo ringtones are! I really want my regular old 1.5 ringtones, but im not sure where to look.
Is there a 1.5 ringtone dump anywhere? Or can i download them from somewhere?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548432
These appear to be from the Hero rather than the Magic, but would they be what you're after?
Posted from my HD2 via XDA app.
Yea those are the ring tones, thanks!
But android 1.5 (and possible above) was weird, in that the default ringtones could only be selected by choosing default. therefore, the ringtone im looking for isnt in that group
can anyone help?
if you're asking how to get them to work on your phone all you have to do is make a folder called media on your sdcard. In the media folder make another folder called audio and place yet another folder called ringtones and notifications. just place your ringtones and notification sounds in their respective folders.

No that i know how to do.
Im asking for the default ringtones from android 1.5 Apparently, theyre not stored in /system/media. In that directory are all the optional ringtones.
When selecting ringtones, you can choose from the list, or select default. The default ringtone is NOT found on that list and therefore NOT in system/media as far as I know
Anyone know whaat I'm talking about here? Lol

You may want to download the original zipped ROM from HTC.
Looky here:
http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3
Download the 'Recovery Image' for Androidâ„¢ 1.5 (make sure the MD5 checksum matches).
Extract and do whatcha want

How do i create them??
Cant find anywhere that shows us who to use the updates
Need to edit an mp3 (and wma i think) file to be less than 30 seconds and set its category (in zune or file properties) to "Ringtone". Sync. Mission Accomplished.
Also, they should be nonprotected. Try using audacity (plus the LAME plugin for mp3 exporting).

Exactly what I said
OK, so have any of you guys actually TRIED To perform this, actually tried to follow his advice? I have and I don't get past 4 minutes and 19 seconds of this video. I will tell you WHY. In the updated Zune there is not OPTION ringtone or RINGTONE as was in his case for genre. Not only do you have to trim the ringtone to a smaller size but you have to change GENRE. AND RINGTONE is not an option available in my ZUNE. So what do we do NOW?
By the way, I use several phones and for that reason I need to use 3 Sweden for my smartphone, just so you know. AND to answer myself. Use a meta tagger editor to change the genre field to RINGTONE, that is the trick.
I've done 2 now and they work fine.
After you've trimmed and converted your file, add it to zune then edit the file and delete the genre and type ringtone.

I'm not allowed to insert links yet
Edit: or as you say a mp3 tagger.
On another note, anyone know if we can do custom text alerts???
Hello.
I have the same problem.

You don't have to choose from the list in Zune. Just type it in. The list is just a common set of genres, nothing more. -_-'

Custom ringtones are only for contact phone calls.

I think i will buy another phone with other OS.

I believe there is a hack or someone is working on a hack to let you use custom alert tones. Try doing a search, and you'll find something.
But otherwise yes, by default, ringtones can only be customized for phone calls.
No, thats just stupid. I'll explain it. This is too easy and yall are making it complicated. I use Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 to adjust my ring tones to the appropriate size. Just make sure you set it as a WMA file when you encode. As far as Zune goes, no, "ringtone" is not in the drop down list, so you actually have to TYPE it the first time. After that it STAYS in your drop down list. YES it works, I've got 20 custom ring tones on my LG Quantum right now using this method. I lost all my custom ringtones when I updated to 7720. You can also generally get the right file size and type from http://audiko.net/ you can download your ring tones for free, sync them to Zune then sync them to your phone. BEAR IN MIND IF IT IS OVER 39 SECONDS IT WILL NOT COME UP ON YOUR RINGTONE LIST ON YOUR DEVICE, SO U MAY NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK IT AND USE THE EDITOR. Oh, and NO. WE CAN STILL NOT MMS audio or video or set custom tones... ive been trying to figure out how to do that for months... still have not been able to find a hack. I figured out how, but it seems that part of the OS is read only... so I can not seem to over right it with my own tones... Why? **** if I know... ask MS.

What did you do to get the custom ringtone..
I mean I have copied a Nexus S rigntone to the notifications folder and I am able to use it a ringtone, this is the usual way of setting a custom ringtone.. have you done this??
Put ringotones in''ringtones'' folder
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app
Copy your custom ringtone mp3 to sdcard/media/audio/ringtones directory. Once the sdcard is scanned for media, the file will appear in your available ringtone list.

I stumbled on this thread/post after searching on the internet. The above solution that you have mentioned did not work for me. I do not have a ringtones folder under sdcard/media/audio directory, just the notifications folder. I copied my ringtones files to this notifications folder and restarted the phone. That did not work. Next I created a ringtone folder under sdcard/media/audio and pasted the tones under this folder.
I restarted the phone again and checked... that also did not work.
Am I missing something here? Please help.

I create my own ringtones in the .ogg format rather than MP3s. Then, I place them in /system/media/audio/ringtones or /system/media/audio/notifications, change permissions to rw-r--r--, change owner and group to 0-root and reboot. It has worked for me every time. I also remove all the existing ringtones and notifications because I never use them, but I don't think that's necessary to make it work.

Personal preference. You like your way, I like mine. It's not all that much work and doesn't really take much time. Also, when my phone is connected to my PC, the ringtones are still usable since they aren't on the SD card.
