Hi all,
Following in the footsteps of coolbho3000 I've run all the Rosie widgets from JacHero 2.3.3 through optipng and recompressed them using 7zip's -mx9 option for maximum compression.

As you can see there isn't much difference but what the hell, every little helps
just adb push to /data/app_s
or if you want to replace them all
Code:
for file in *.apk
do
adb push "$file" /data/app_s
done
Download:

hmm.. Would it take MORE processing power to decompress an apk at a higher compression level though? Wouldn't it be best to optimize all PNGs and then keep the apk's at a LOW but FAST compression level?
Yeah i was thinking about that, at the moment it seams like the limiting factor on the G1 is ram, not processor speed. So there will be some more overhead when decompressing the files but it might be offset by the very small increase in free memory.
Just like the optimized rosie, which I tested, doing this adds lag to the system. Honestly for 1 MB of space is it really worth adding 5 - 10 seconds more load time to the app?

When you uncompress the file, it takes just as much RAM. But it's nice to see people working on optimizing the various parts of Hero.

Yeah, they seem to be optimized for space, not speed. I think that it would be faster if they were compressed at the LOWEST possible compression as it would decompress faster.
Can these widgets be used on a stock ION / Magic or must they be installed on the custom rom JACHero 2.3.3 only?

I just finished doing this, didn't hit every single png in the build, but most of them, all the ones out of the largest apk's for sure, got the update down to 79.1 mb, also was able to resave the wallpapers at medium quality, as suggested by manup, but haven't tried it out yet.

Anyone who is complaining about 1gig to store apps please go away
But really this isnt an iPhone apps are not 500 megs 1gig is plenty for the average person
ive never ran out or room on 512mb. plus you also have apps 2 sd storing 50% or more of the data on 14gb flash
on my i9000 i had 130 mb from 1,85 gb used. so i think the 1 gb would be enough space for me!
I also suppose it comes down to what type of user your are. If you are into games, I have read that there are some impressive looking games on the horizon. These games could end up eating up a lot of space. That being said I am sure there will be a workaround developed to the 1GB limit.

Well the maximum space allowed for any app is 50megs. Google recently raised it from 25megs.
It should be a market requirement that if your app is over 10MB that it must support apps2sd

Didn't realize that, well than there should be plenty of space.
What games can do however, is have the basic install small, but when you launch it first time, it'll download whatever data it needs and save to SD.
That's what happens for Pocket Legends and Dungeon Hunters. The latter from Gameloft downloads around 250-270 MB to your sd card, which is required for the game to work.
Why do I get such low RAM?
On my Sensation I get around 160 MB free with no apps running. On my iPhone 4 with 512 ram I got around 330 MB~ with everything closed.
I disabled sense and uninstalled some bloatware yet that doesn't seem to help. What's hogging my memory???

if you have a trawl through all the information in XDA (Painful i know) you will see that its no bad thing to have things in RAM. Android works differently to iOS and Windows and works best when its applications are held in RAM.
It will also auto-kill your apps when it needs to and so you dont need an task killer. in fact, using a task killer can use more battery and slow your phone down - If you kill something that doesnt want killing it will re-open and use battery and resources doing so.
Thanks

I checked Sense in Settings --> Applications, and it's showing that it's only using 5.3 MB. ?? What gives
Hi again,
I really wouldnt worry about it. Mine has 610MB, used 396MB and only have 214MB free with nothing showing in task manager
Cheers

Sense is not just one app, it's built into the entire rom, so you haveany things that get loaded into ram, even though you can't see them.
Plus, android likes to actually use free ram, since unused ram is wasted ram. There are some kernel memory settings that will cache apps in the memory for quick access, and when you load an ap that needs a lot of ram, say a game, it'll close some least used cached apps until there is enough free space, and when you close out of the game, it loads those apps back into memory when they are called again.

Another pull of a cached version from Google. More info can be found in the replies to the original thread.
Doing this mod or quick set up is known on many devices. I decided to bring it over here for some people that aren't too familiar with it.
Lowering the dpi on your device increases the screen quality and also allows you to fit more icons on your homescreen and app drawer.
By default our devices is 220dpi
I lowered mine to 180dpi
May play around with it some more but I like the quality I have now. I'm using GoLauncherEX which allows you to resize widgets. So it plays well together.
I used the old fashion way by going through the build.prop with rootexplorer
System/build.prop and edited the LCD DENSITY line to my preferred #, pick save&exit and pulled my battery
If you would like to take a more easy approach you can download one of the apps in the play store and follow those directions.
If you have a problem with your apps not showing up in the Play Store, follow the instructions here. Downloads in the second post.
Here are a couple screenshots of what I'm referring to. If you have any questions feel free.
**Most Importantly**
LOWERING THE DPI TOO LOW WILL CONFLICT SOME APPS IN THE PLAYSTORE AS WELL AS THE STOCK DIALER.

Some Apps that support DPI change (BE CAUTIOUS USING THESE)
Why don't you just use a launcher that allows you alter how many icons are in the desktop and the drawer?
I also fail to see how lowering your DPI increases screen quality. I mean, if I lower the amount of chocolate chips in my cookies, that makes them inferior.

Hi there devs,
Rcently my friend told me about a rom for their fone which gave total ram as free, the developers of the rom developed some tweak to do that
here's the link: http://www.living-optimus.com/2013/07/p350-tweak-para-liberar-ram.html ,
i just think this might help G3 development. Posting this is Dev section coz its kinda important stuff and needs to catch a few eyes.
here the result they got

Total free ram. Is that even possibly?
Nevertheless, Looks like some build prop tweak. Trying it right away.
Is it worth to have so much free ram? It is said that unused ram is wasted or am I mistaken?

More RAM = more multitasking, apps won't get closed as often if system is running out of RAM.
not total free ram...maybe the core applications are provided different portion of the total ram ...dunno what just guessin
I think u are right aarun. maybe the system is pre-allotted some portion of the ram. And the rest may be given to the user apps. But this can b a bad idea cos if the system may want more RAM like on first boot or sth there may be problems. Sometimes even the system gives away some part of its RAM usage when some apps require it. But in this case of partitioning the RAM this may not be possible. Lets see though what this mod has to offer.....
There are three tweaks there which one should i pick? If this really works i won't buy a new phone next year!
@aarrun
can u upload build.prop and system.prop files from ur friends phone and xda link of the rom ur friend is using.

OK, i translated the page and the real tweak is the fourth. I tried it on my phone and RAM got optimized a little (i have 54 applications installed and normally i get 40-50 Mb of free RAM now i'm getting 100-110 MB of free ram). This evening i will try the other improvements too!
I am on CyanogenMod Alpha9 MTD and here's my build.prop.
Always do a Nandroid backup and build.prop backup before trying this stuff.
awesome!!!! Its really working!

Is the tweak really working?

How TO USE it :
put the jarvis.mp4 file some where in your
phone (you can use USB cable or FTP
remote manager or etc)
in your phone go to your file manager with
root access (I use Root Explorer)
move jarvis.mp4 file to /system/media

That is not how bootanimations work.... You have to split the animation/movie into numbered .png files, add a script determining the framerate etc. and put it all into a bootanimation.zip file which also needs proper permissions (644 I think?)
Please do not misinform other users.
It's a beautiful animation, but at 24 seconds, it's way too long for my N5 with MM (about 16 seconds max).
I've chopped-off the end, cut the number of frames in half, and increased the scaled-framerate to 15fps (from 24/2=12).
At 15mb, it's a bit larger than I like, but I can live with it.
Let me know what you think:
