So the keyboard lag on this device has been an issue and their has been a thread started on PPC Geeks with a Reg Edit that actually fixes it, to an extent...
With Total Commander:
-Windows
-Find "thread_sms.htm"
-File, Edit
-Then Delete the word "count" in the COMPOSESUBJECT line.
<Inbox:content id="COMPOSESUBJECT" width="98%" height=35 spell focus count links noclearonbackpresshold limit=0 autocap inserttab dynamicresize />
This gets rid of the character count, which keeps the lag from happening. So you either keep the character count (which isn't to important to me) or you get no more keyboard lag!! For me it's no-brainer, to others it may be different.
My question to anyone that wants to try and help me figure this out is how could we keep the character count, but change this to where it will only count once typing has seized for say 2 seconds, this way it is not counting while you are typing, which will eliminate the lag, but when you stop it counts, this way you can stop, see where your count is, and continue if you want. Or even a theory to not count, but to only prompt you once you have crossed the character limit for each message?
Any takers or help on this?

Has anyone else tried this? I just did and it is still counting, and the lag is still there.
UPDATE
I took the file from PPC Geeks and just overwrited it into the windows folder and now it works. Thanks for the tip!
UPDATE 2
The counter has popped up again. It got real slow and then the counter showed up at the top left. I don't see a difference in speed though.

For some reason some phones have been working with the overwrite and some will work fine with just editing it yourself, I edited it myself and it works flawlessly, I also changed not only the "thread_sms.htm", but I also changed the same exact thing in "thread_sms.ht". I'm not sure if it made any difference but I changed it in both places, see if that helps?

I just noticed that the today items messaging and device lock disappeared from my today screen on my Atom. I would like to get them back. anybody know how? The don't show up in start>setting>today>items however, they are visible in the registery (and enabled) and visible with memmaid.
Please let me know if there is an other solution than to hrad reset my device.
Thanks in advance
there are limits of how many today items you can have
forgot how many
but the today item list is limited to 13
if you remove some in the reg the ones you are missing will show up
in today items
Hi Rul,
The other thing to check in your registry is the value of the Reg_DWord called "Order" for each of your plug-ins. Occassionally my plugins will play hide and seek if I've installed a new one and its default order number clashes with any of the other plugins. They do however still show up in the today settings. I'll post my reg settings so you can check yours are ok and then double chekc that the dll's for each are where they are supposed to be.
Good luck - Mallow1
Oops, forgot to mention that for me I have the Device Lock disabled anyway (so just ref to the other reg settings) as I have it in the sys tray instread to save Today Screen space, thanks to an excellent cab writen by armstrom http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_simpleboard/Itemid,59/func,view/catid,27/id,17285/#17285 which uses the underlying Device Lock but via an exe which you can then assign to the sys tray using any of the tray launcher programs out there.
Regards - Mallow1
PS I swapped the icon out to be the same as Device Lock (armstrom's exe uses a different one if you happen to go down this route).
Thanks for you reply's.
With the messaging and device lock items I have 13 today items. (now 11 since these two don't show up anymore).
I have checked the Reg_DWord called "Order" and there are no clashes...
Any other solution?
Thanks for the device lock thingy in the sys tray, very useful.
What have you done differently since the last time you could see your missing items? Loaded anything else? Reflashed etc? It may help us track down what has gone wrong if Rudegar's suggestion didn't work and you have no clashes when you checked my suggestion.
Of all your 13 items do you run/ wish to run all of them or are some disabled (and unlikely to be used again). If some are redundnat, did you try Rudegar's suggestion of removing them from the registry?
On a side note, and without wishing to get side tracked or complicate your issue have you tried "MoreTodays" to see if that helps at all if all your 13 items are "must haves" but you are only seeing 11. It allows you to have multiple Today Screens each showing different plug ins. Depending upon how it works it may allow for >11 (or >=13) whatever the formal limit is, plugins to operate. See http://www.jgui.net/moretodays/index.html
Regards - Mallow1
Some of the today Items are disabled, in fact 5 of the 13. So I deleted a couple of them. Still not showing ion my todayscreen.
Well, as far as I know I have installed some programs, don't know exactly which I have installed, so that's not really helping.
I tried the program you've suggested and I can select messaging and device lock. But they still don't show up on my todayscreen.
I think I will have to learn to live with it, which is not that hard though, or I will have to hard reset my device.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
After you deleted some from your registry did you try a simple soft reset (rather than having to resort to the horror of a hard one)?
yep, did that after every change I've made. No results though.
Sounds basic but have you checked that the dll files concerned are still present. If they are present it may be that a path is wrong in the registry (try adding an explicit path/double checking path matches location), else we can resort to simply replacing them just in case they have been corrupted.
On that last point did you try the Device Lock exe I highlighted. If that works it means that the underlying device lock dll works too (as the exe uses it rather than emulates it) and it is therefore a Today Screen issue we are facing not a corrupted dll.
Now that you removed your unwanted dll refs from the registry, how many Today Items are there left there? I have at the back of my mind that there is also an upper limit to the number of resources WM can handle at any one time (think I recall this causing problems with Wisbar not being able to skin a few things simply because too much was already loaded and the required dll file scould therfore not be used).... but we can save broadening the issues until we've eliminated the simpler more direct ones.
Regards - Mallow1
PS FYI I have 9 Today items in my registry and 7 that are enabled. If you delete your unused 5 items out of 13 that would at least bring you down to within the same range loaded in my registry and we could eliminate the "number in registry" from the list of possible issues.
Ooh, another quick one to try (I use it when I have items checked in the Today settings that have failled to show in the Today Screen), is try running this little app which simply refreshesd the Today Screen. See if your missing items appear afterwards.

Hi, i love your today screen! Tidy but functional! Could you please tell me what apps/plugins etc you've got going on there?
Hi fuel925,
Thanks. There's something like 30-40 packages making up the entire screen and functionality. Rather than clutter this thread with an off topic reply I'll see what I can knock up and post in a separate thread to give you an insight and post a link here afterwards.

Hi. Mallow1
I've tried everything, nothing is working. I rest my case. Thanks for your help anyway.

Rul
Hi Rul,
Sorry to hear that. I've heard that theAtom has had a chequered start. Sounds like hard reset time (and I did hear somewhere that since so many of the early Atoms were having problems that an updated ROM had been relased quite quickly post launch). If yours was an early one you may find searching or checking for the updated ROm and reflashing helps (I want to say I think I saw this with respect to Aussie Atoms but can't swerar to it).
Anyway. Good luck - Mallow1
When I got my Atom I imediately put the "leaked" ROM on it. So it is not the case of an old ROM or something.
I just noticed that it is not showing the smartdailing plugin from the Treo 700w I just installed on it. So I guess there is something seriously wrong with the today plugins.

Hi all, has anyone had any problems with phone pad when you select it the original keyboard comes up
Its driving me crazy!
search around this has been discussed here before somewhere...can't remember where!
I think it might be to do with memory (lack of)... have you changed the page pool size?
Maybe you have apps running in startup?
if you have something like "SPB pocket plus" installed, you could try loading Windows in "safe mode" and see if it lets you choose the phone pad then...
<edit> removed my other edit as per post below

ok this is weird!
I have been playing about and i tried the following:
1. turn on flight mode
2. reboot
3. wait until the backlight turns off
4. change the input method
This (for some odd reason) worked! But i have a funny feeling its totally random
What advantages are there of the 12mb pp? I was always under the impression that the lower it was the better (in terms of memory)

good that u got it sorted...I guess if you load as "default" it will load the phone pad into ram instead of the standard keyboard thus saving some memory

hmm i posted that? whoops. Ok, I wasn't sober. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
y'know, i used to know this stuff, How did I manage to get things so confused...
i can't find the links to the msdn developer blogs where it's all explained nicely
(and that search button is just saying "come and trawl through 1000 noob posts" lol)
so now I'm confusing myself
Deep in the depths of the operating system of your device, there is something called the 'PagePool'. Without going into too much detail (and as I understand it!), the PagePool is a special area of memory reserved for loading apps into from ROM. This PagePool is a lot faster than ROM, so when things are executed from this 'cache' instead, the performance of a device will be quicker. On the flipside, if you have a 8MB pagepool (HTC Touch) and you're using, say, 4MB of the pagepool, then 4MB of space is wasted that could be program memory. Similarly if you have a 12MB pagepool (!) (T-Mobile Wing) in this instance you would we wasting 8MB of space!

so I'm not even sure about anything anymore, but at this point I think that zerod is correctly indicating that I gave you the wrong information regarding page pool, and that 12MB will give you less free memory and less likelihood of running phonepad?....
so...I'm gonna go ahead and edit out that recommendation, as people all over the web view xda as a goldmine for WM info, and there's no point in leaving bad info for them....
and if anyone wants to elaborate on page pool, or leave some links here...please do
Since moving to JF's RC33, I'm finding that the phone re-enables the "audible selection" tick sound at every boot. I'd seen this happen occasionally earlier, but now it happens dependably ever time the phone is restarted. For now I've renamed the .ogg file that contains the "tick" sound in the ua directory so that it can't be played, but something is apparently amiss.
Other than this, JF's work continues to be remarkable. I just wish so many Android apps didn't insist on tiny fonts that can't be enlarged at this stage (e.g. mail programs, "non-classic" browser settings, Google voice search, etc ... That's sure not JF's fault though. Hopefully this will be dealt with in Android fairly soon before too much additional eye strain consumes us.
Hey man, I happened to lie that "tick" sound. I seem to delete mine on the accident, is there anyway you could upload it or send it to me? I really miss mine
Thanks!
Its attached to my post have it...
The "tick" is a glitch somewhere in a the hacked rom.
There is a thread about this already in these forums.
Thanks
Well, the other day (on my Blackjack II), I became artificially alarmed because I went into my Add/Remove Programs menu, and found that it was COMPLETELY EMPTY! Well, after some looking around, I found that this is a "known bug" (or characteristic) of Windows Mobile (it will be blank if you have more than 50 applications installed on your phone). Well, this is the first I'd ever heard about this, so it was a surprise to me.
The good news is that you can still uninstall programs that are installed on your phone by using Active Sync, but this is still a pain if you need to uninstall something and you aren't near your PC. This is especially annoying if you are like me and easily have over 50 applications installed at any given time (being that you are reading this on this site I'm sure you're all with me on this).
Anyway, I'm just wanting to find out if there is any kind of registry hack or adjustment that can be made to raise the limit to a higher number, or possibly get rid of the limit altogether? If anyone has any info regarding this please post it up, and maybe we can finally correct this issue. Thanks!
You can suggest it to microsoft by this link:

I have just recently got my Tp2 from verizon and have been playing with it for a few days now. I have been on this website for the past couple of days and have learned a few things to do with my new phone. The only thing Ive done so far is dl and install a HDWall wallpaper and skyfire for whenever I need flash. I have been looking around to maybe make a theme on Tp2 but making th tabs and clock translucent/transparent. From what I have found this isn't possible with my phone yet or if it is, it is buggy. Is this true or not? If not can someone point me in the right direction for me to get it on my phone. Next, I've noticed my phones memory is around %55-60. I was just wondering if this is normal? Does the HD wallpaper up the memory a lot? I know there is a program called cleanram that can help free up some memory, but will it do that much for me? I havent read into it fully yet but plan on it in the next couple of days. Thank you guys and gals for your time and patience.
I'd say that's just about normal. I only have a twitter app loaded in, and I do occasional browsing on opera when I'm out and about and I lock in at 68% or so. I think that the app is causing a memory leak, but no big.
I also found a good cleanup app on PPCGeeks that really sped up my TP2. I'm on verizon as well, and I'd recommend it. As to the transparent tabs, curtains and clocks, every one that I've installed has caused issues and I hope things get a little more stable in the next few weeks.

As far as your ram situation, that is normal with the stock TP2. Mine was also fresh out of the box and it showed the same percentage you have. You have to install a registry editor and go through the following process. (The cab for the registry editor is attached to this post)
Using your registry editor, navigate to “HKLM\SOFTWARE\HTC\ResProxy” and change “ShareMemSize” to 0. By the way, if you want Opera to show up in HTC’s task manager, go to “HKCU\Software\HTC\TaskManager\ExclusiveList\System” and delete "Opera9.exe."
Now to avoid Opera from running on the startup. Use this registry tweak to close opera with Task manager
* Go to: HKCU\Software\HTC\TaskManager\TerminateProcess
* There, create a DWORD with the name Opera9.exe value "1"
I learned through this forum that when you tap the X on opera or even close it through the menu options, it only minimizes it instead of actually closing it. This is to produce a faster page load whenever you open opera, thus appearing as if it loads fast. While its running in the background, its actually refreshing your favorite pages at set intervals to keep the content fresh so when you open opera, all the content of the page is already downloaded on your device. Unfortunately this comes at a cost of 2 things, ram, and battery life. Applying these tweaks is a matter of preference. You either choose a faster loading browser in opera, or more ram and battery life. I hope this helps. Enjoy.
Thanks for the reply..After posting this last night I did install the verizon tweeks cab and it has helped my memory drop tremendously (low-mid 40's) So thats nice. Thanks again for your input.
care to share it?

Ok is it safe to assume that in the "TerminateProcess" folder of the registry, this is only allowing me to kill opera, not really stopping it from loading, right?

You are absolutely correct. But once you kill it, it will only load when you open it, and when you close it, it really closes. This registry edit only takes away the ability for Opera to "smart minimize" only and not close. When you apply that edit, it will actually close instead of "smart minimizing" all of the time. This option was only put in so opera is always refreshing your favorites keeping the content up to date so that when you "opened" Opera, it would appear to be a "faster" loading browser, but in essences it just keeps the content fresh in the background costing you battery life and ram. Hope this clears things up.
