I'm abandoning this thread, since there are now too many ports to keep track of, so don't expect any updates. Just make sure that any rom you flash on your phone is 32A compatible. These roms all have modified boot.img, wlan.ko, apnconfig.xml, and possibly some other tweaks to sweeten the pot.

Thanks! This is much appreciated.
I think it might be worthwile to add in your list the ROM's modded by redglass. I've found them to work much better on my phone (32A Australia) as compared to the mod found on the Fatal1ty thread.

I tried loading the stock rogers rom last night, didnt seem to work, told me it was unsigned, or do i need to push each one of the files individually.
And also when trying to load the HOfo community rom downloaded from both of the links posted here it told me that one of the files was corrupted. can't think of the file off the top of my head, sorry.
EDIT: sorry i dont have the engineering spl
thanks.
this was much needed.
Thanks for this, used your guide and moded ROM on the weekend it's great. Now the wife wants it on hers as well.

Thanks for this thread.
Could I flash any of these ROMS with just my rooted device or do I need to flash an SPL or something first?
Edit: nevermind, noticed the hofo link at the bottom of your post...
Thank you Skittles
Skittles,
This is awesome. Thanks for taking the time to dedicate a post to us Rogers users. I totally appreciate all the work you have put in and all those who you have worked in concert with to arrange these wonderful opportunities for us to play!!!
I look forward to seeing if any of the users here report happy findings!

SKITTLES Quick Question
By the way Skittles,
Do we HAVE to flash the SPL in order to use other roms? I heard SPL/Radio switching is the big danger. Can I install the hero rom just without flashing the SPL?

I believe you should be able to flash this to a Rogers Magic without changing your SPL, but changing your SPL makes it possible to make and restore Nandroid backups (which helps like crazy) so I would still recommend it.

I have made a nandroid backup already using the daldroid-recovery.img and the fastboot process. As far as I know I did this stuff without making any changes to my device. A raw backup through fastboot.
However, would I be unable to flash back the boot.img, recovery.img, and system.img using this same daldroid-recovery.img fastboot process?
What is the difference between what I am describing and actually changing or flashing the SPL version.
I just want to do this safely and be able to restore to factory (or stock) version of phone for warranty purposes.
Thanks skittles,
You rock,
Adam

You technically could by using the Amon_RA's new recovery (it has the option for Nandroid restore). I have yet to try it with the stock SPL, but you probably could.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
Typically, restoring a rom backup is done through fastboot, which is why you need an engineering SPL which won't signature check.

Well I would prefer to stick to things the way you have done them already. I appreciate you trying everything first, of course.
So Do you recommend I just go with your guides. They are entirely reversible down to the bootloader?

Hi,
Rogers released new dream rom with a radio update.
We have 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I now
This new is:
62.52S.20.18U_3.22.20.17.
Anyone able to get it out so we can flash it on cyan latest mod rom?
Dont know exact radio version but go here for rom:

Thanks again.
the whole dump is an nbh file that has to be flashed from the sd. Anybody know how to crack it open?
I bet it contains other fixes as well! The message on Twitter said that they fixed some bugs!

I remember back when I had my Wizard, there was a tool to pick apart nbh images and reassemble them. But this was for Windows Mobile, a completely different platform. Perhaps the basic file formats are similar?
Use qmat. It can unpack nbhs.
Mmmm, new radio.......yummy.....I like new stuff.....wait if it is a new radio, will this be able to work for us, how to we know that this won't jeprodize us with the danger spl. I know I ain't gonna be the first to try this

my thoughts exactly...took enough balls to go for the danger SPL in the first place.
my current radio works fine, so I am not going to mess.
then again...never say never. thats what XDA is all about
Well we know the radio calls the spl and that the old radio was not able to call the hayruko spl which cause way too many paperweights so how will we know if this radio will also call it, we can assume that since it is an update would but the word assume means to make an ass out of you and me, so is there any way that this can be checked or tested numerous times before we possibly get another wave of bricks and without a cupcake over the air excuse to fall back on. Just my thoughts.
Never change a running system my father tells. Me all the time.. ;-)
Yeah but I like new stuff, I got so used to it feeling like christmas around with new stuff all the time that I got spoiled. I have had this radio and spl for 3 months now and I am bored off it. I demand something new that could cause some new widespread havoc, can't we get something that causes a self destruct if installed incorrectly, kinda jealous of those iphone 3gs users and their exploding batteries, I want something that explodes and catches fire. I demand a refund what am I paying you dev for, wait I don't pay you, nevermind forget this whole post
P.s. I am just playing
rogers is DREA210
we have mostly DREA100/110
i dont think we r able to flash it...
Hardware is identical.
So it should work OK.
Just give me radio Rom only and i will flash it asap.
drea110 here.
You can go back to default by flashing DREAIMG.nbh and then re-flash with this Rom and all will be OK.BUT YOU WILL LOOSE ROOT!
And that is why i didn't flash it yet
Am waiting for someone to give a proper radio Rom to flash.
There will always be a question about whether any new radio image (IPL) that ships will be compatible with a hacked SPL or other SPL not intended for the specific device. This new IPL could very well brick every device it is installed on when mixed with the deathSPL. I very strongly suggest that nobody tries this IPL unless they switch back to their STOCK SPL. Now that HTC has so kindly provided the kernel source needed to build custom kernels that will boot on a stock dream as provided to rogers, there is absolutely NO NEED to continue using the deathSPL phone killer.
Hey, does this nbh file carry the SPL? (it must, doesn't it?)
If it does, then you could maybe just install this and reroot.
Yes it contains spl and radio rom and os rom on it so it will put back everything on stock.
But you will loose root and as of now there is no way to root on 1.5 version.. yet.
if there is i would flash it.
Re-root leave radio and check spl version.
if newer than deathspl would leave it and flash cyanogen 4.0.4.
If not reflash haykuro new hacked spl back and then wipe and flash cyanogen 4.0.4.
And am back in bussiness with new radio and/or spl.
But rooting on 1.5 cupcake needed to do that so...

Really REALLY WRONG!
As I rank your knowledge about SPLs,Radios and android itself with this post, you shouldn't flash this, except if you wouldn't cry and open up a thread "My G1 is dead" ;-)

And you base that on what?
1.5 is rootable - look for "goldcard"
Second: This update has a different SPL - It's not an Engineering SPL.
It replaces your recovery.
And I think these Recovery and ROM wouldn't boot on a regular T-Mobile G1, because it has a different radio chip.
It's very risky to flash this, because it's from a different phone.
It's NOT the same hardware!

I hope this is not a very stupid question, but why would you need a goldcard. Can't you just revert to RC29 and root you device the old and easy way?

Of course i didn't expect it to be engineering spl, this rom are made of normal ppl to use not experiment so normal spl would be on it but maybe the same as g1 or newer.
rogers only modification was on UMTS 850 / 1900 bands the normal g1 only supports UMTS 1700 / 2100 but rogers g1 users did flash radio rom from g1 vanilla see hardspl or even haykuro's hacked spl and they work fine so why not the contrary?
After all they keep the same base versions:
We have 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
They have 62.52S.20.18U_3.22.20.17.
If they had: 3.0008 i wouldn't bother smells from miles is not same radio hardware
But as you can see the code is identical to each other, only newer!
The hardware IS the same my friend only they dont have dvt only pvt motherboards and they all be flashed with latest haykuro's spl and radio!
If am wrong the os will load but i wont have cell reception but that is as far as it goes for a brick.
Am 99% this rom will do just fine on any pvt g1 phone out there.
As for goldcard, didnt know there is a way to root on 1.5 please enlighten me.
Is there anything to download to make this happen? ->link
if it is am more than 101% that this rom will go on my phone sweet.
After that i dont know what happens will i be able to flash haykuro spl back or i will have a brick? will it let me flash custom rom?
Over and out.
Hello.
I've been here for around a week now, reading tons and tons of threads and guides, yet it leaves me with a bunch of questions i am having trouble finding answers to.
First of all, this is the information i've managed to get from my Magic
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0014 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.23.18
Sep 2 2009, 17:42:56
It's bought in Denmark, however i bought it used, so i don't know what's happend to it in the past, yet as of what i've read and tried, i believe it's still as stock.
A bunch of questions
General
1. What is SPL?
2. What are the different types and differences of SPLs?
3. What is Radio?
4. What is a "Goldcard"?
5. In what part of the proces from stock ROM to a Hero ROM is the chance of bricking the phone?
Concering my phone
1. How to you get started upgrading a stock Magic with the standard ROM to a Hero ROM? (Do you flash SPL first, recovery first, or something third?)
2. I believe but not sure, that my current SPL is a "perfect" one, do i need one of these so-called "goldcards" to get a Hero ROM?
3. How great is the chance of bricking the phone with my specs and versions, and is there any way to minimize this chance?
I hope that someone will be able to help answering my possibly stupid questions, so i'll eventually be able to get a Hero ROM working on the dear magic without bricking it.
Thanks in advance.
I am not sure if this is posted in the correct section, if not, please forgive me.
Some of these questions can be answered in the sapphire wiki, which is in the sticky at the top of this sub forum.
You can only brick your phone (completely recoverable) from screwing up when flashing your spl or flashing the wrong spl

The only thing you need to remember from the settings is 32A. Never flash anything that doesn't say it's for 32A (not entirely correct, but safe bet ;-)).
The first thing you need is to root and install a recovery, I recommend AmonRA recovery. I never flashed SPL or radio, you can install almost all ROMs without flashing radio/SPL.
now more in detail on your questions:
1. SPL (or HBOOT) is the "Second Program Loader". Flashing this incorrectly can brick your phone, so don't do it, and you're normally safe.
2. stay with stock ;-) I only flashed an engineering SPL just last week, but was flashing almost daily ROMs. I still don't see the advantage of flashing a different SPL
3. The radio is the firmware of the 'radio' chip in your mobile. Also not safe to change for beginners.
4. Not sure, it is used for rooting some devices it seems, or to bring bricked devices back from the dead. If you need to know more, you're in trouble ;-)
5. Stay away from flashing radio/SPL and you won't brick your phone (although sometimes you need to know some 'trick' to get the phone back in useable state ;-))
how:
1. root and install a custom recovery. From the recovery you can do nifty things: mount USB, wipe, flash, make a backup, restore
2. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! With that, you can always go back to your previous state (providing you didn't brick the device)
3. take one of the 32A ports of Hero, never a ROM that is made for the Hero itself (partition layout is different, and some hardware too). I recommend my-hero 2.0.5. It works well, is made for the 32A, and safe to flash.
You can find more details on those steps in the forum, but I hope some of it has become more clear.

Thanks alot for your answers! It was helpfull. However you say that i don't have to flash a new SPL, are you sure about that? I believe i've read somewhere i'd have to flash a new one in order to get root access because i have a perfect SPL - please correct me if i am wrong
You really don't need to flash SPL (unless for cursorsense). You DO need to flash recovery, this makes everything a lot easier.
ah, you have a 'perfect' SPL, sorry, missed that part. I don't have that, so I didn't need to flash SPL at all to enjoy custom ROMs.
Can't help you with that then, search more info I'd say!
The information you provided did help indeed.
However i found out how to make a goldcard, now i just need to know if i found the right SPL to flash.
Would this be the right one for me?

read at least this very carefully:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
It would be great if a mod could please sticky this so that we do not continue to get random threads and confusion.
I have decided to make this thread because there are a LOT of EBI1 users out of the loop, i my self just a few weeks ago (after 3 months) learned that EBI1 users can use more than just cyano.
Ok, with the recent rogers mandatory update the EBI1 community has grown quite a bit.
You may be wondering what is EBI1?
well, it is the radio version 3.22.26.17, this radio is on the rogers dream and on sapphire/mt3g/magic phones as well.
On the dream it is known as EBI1/32b on the magic it is EBI1/32a
You can check to see if you have the EBI1 radio buy booting into fastboot mode(hold camera when booting) and look where it shown radio. If it says 3.22.26.17 on the screen anywhere, you are EBI1.
If your phone falls under the EBI1 category you have a few options
1) you can go to www.briancrook.ca and use any EBI1 kernel ports from his website. He is the guru of EBI1 ports and will have the most trustworthy of ports.
2) You can visit the sapphire dev forum (on xda (just below the dream/g1 forum)) Here you can download any kernels ports that are listed as 32a or old radio. The old radio/32a sapphire has the same EBI1 radio as the rogers dream!
3) OR most importantly, you can make your OWN ports using this simple tool:
http://faruq.yandao.com/magicport/
We can credit arctu for this amazing tool!
-just extract the rom you want to use
-in the extracted folder you will see a boot.img
-in the program browse and select the boot.img
-choose your settings (minimal is optimal)
-It will create you a EBI1 kernel!
there is a discussion of this tool in the sapphire dev forum.
you may now be asking, what do I do with the port file?
Well, once you get your kernel port,
-You go into recovery (preferably amon because you can flash multiple zip files)
-Flash the desired ROM
-Flash your Kernel Port
-You're done!
We must also be careful when it comes to recovery images
Your recovery is an amazing tool and can save your phone from disaster. Remember: always make a nandroid (or nandorid +ext3) backup before flashing a new ROM!!!!
My personal favourite recovery is Amon's, it is great because it has all the features you could ever want, plus it is great for EBI1 users because you can easily flash multiple zip files without rebooting (which is what you do when flashing ROMs on an EBI1 phone)
You must be careful what recovery you install
EBI0 recoveries are not compatible with the EBI1 radios, you can BRICK your phone, when installing a recovery make sure you install the EBI1 version
With Amon's recovery the EBI1 version is the "R" version. A direct download to the recovery is here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/32033517...am-v1.5.2R.img
I would highly suggest visiting his thread for instructions on use and installation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
G1 devs please listen up:
Inorder to run your ROMS on EBI1 phones we need to make a kernal to flash over the ROM. This means that your existing kernel will be replaced, this is always a negative for us as your kernels create large improvements.
One method you can use to help reduce the gap between you regular rom and an ebi1 version is to:
1) Optimize your ROM to run at its best without any special kernal adjustments
***2) If your ROM utilizes the 10MB ram hack, please also release a non ram hack version.
The reasoning behind this is that the ROM is ment for the ram hack so 3d and hq doesn't work properly on the ROM, when we flash our EBI1 kernel over the ROM, the ram hack is gone. The result is a ROM which has the set backs of the 10MB hack (no 3d, no HQ) AND it DOES NOT get the positves if the hack (we do not get the extra 10MB)
3) Create your own EBI1 ports
thanks to ottawanate:
minimum requirements for porting a ROM to EBI1 are
1) wlan.ko patch or wifi wont work
2) boot.img with Kernel config file marked for CONFIG_MSM_AMSS_SUPPORT_256MB_EBI1=y
Please consider the now vastly larger EBI1 community when making your ROMS, thank you!

If you are a dev and would like to be added to the list please post here and let me know or PM me. (with a link preferably to the page with your ROM/Kernel)
What is EBI1
EBI1 is actually a term derived from the kernel config file. When the line 'CONFIG_MSM_AMSS_SUPPORT_256MB_EBI1=y' is set, the kernel supports 32A Magics and the 3.x series radio.
The kernel itself sits in your boot partition. Typically you flash a boot.img file to your phone to install the kernel. The kernel boots up your system after the boot launcher.
So I prefer to call the 3.x series radio the EBI1 kernel radio, since EBI1 refers to support for 32A Magics as well.
Any 3 series radio needs the EBI1 kernel. So that would include 3.22.20.17. There's another one floating around and installed stock on some 32B Magics (notably from Europe).
If you have the source code of the rom you want to flash, you can build your own kernels by following the instructions here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/How_to_build_a_kernel_port
What to pay attention to if I have a 3.x series radio and need the EBI1 kernel
Well first of all you need a ROM with the EBI1 kernel. First of all, the kernel itself is located in your 'boot' partition. Hence you need to be careful when flashing any update.zip files from recovery, because they may overwrite your EBI1 kernel, if it contains a boot.img. To make sure, just open the zip file to view its contents before you flash it. For example, the RAM hack requires a different kernel than the original, and application of it necessitates that you flash a new boot.img. However all the boot.img RAM HACK kernels are being provided without EBI1 support.
In addition to the kernel itself, the wireless drivers need to be recompiled to make it work with the different kernel. This file is wlan.ko. If you do not have a compatible version installed, your wireless lan will not function, which can cause your phone not to boot properly into the system, as it would freeze trying to startup your wireless lan.
The kernel goes hand in hand with your system rom to make your phone work. So if you update your system rom, you typically have to update your kernel as well.
It would be also useful to note that having the 3.x series radio requires you to have a different recovery image than if you didn't have the radio.
What happens if I install the wrong one?
Installing the wrong kernel is not destructive to your phone. If you have the wrong kernel installed, your phone will freeze after the first boot screen (non-animated). Don't worry about installing the wrong kernel.
What if I want to change to the 3.x series radio from the 2.x series radio or vice versa?
Changing to the 3.x series radio does have advantages for certain people. However, changing the radio is can brick your phone if you do not have the correct recovery flashed before changing your radio. There should be ample information on xda to help you with this process.
Other Stuff
The current active roms with EBI1 ports that I know of that work on my Rogers Dream:
Super D
Cyanogenmod
OpenEclair
Question to the OP: Does the WesGarner EB1 kernel include the 32b/dream RAM Hack?
very nice addition, to the post!
I have not personally tried a wes ROM before but i am going to assume that it does not, if anyone knows please telll us!
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624545&highlight=ebi1 says I need DangerSPL first. If I used cyanogen wiki here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod to change my spl will it work?
U can add my AOSP 2.1 to the ebi1 support list
the no wipe update for it is in my op

I added your name to the OP as an applauded dev by the EBI1 community.
Used http://faruq.yandao.com/magicport/ to port this ROM, using the No-Wipe update for No RAM Hack kernel. Worked perfectly! Thanks to King Klick, asb123, and Faruq!

how is that ROM in terms of 1)speed 2)stability when compared to the eclair ROMS?
also, what exactly do you mean you used the no ram hack kernal, did u flash ROM, flash the no ram hack kernal, then flash the ebi1 kernal you made? if so, i think that would just over right the no ram hack kernal.
Or does the kernal GIVE it ram hack? thus the ROM itself doesnt have the hack built in?
on a side note:
I want to run a hero ROM but I think they are 1.5 based so I cannot use the tool on them. If anyone has any info on getting a Hero ROM working on EBI1 plz let us know.

yeah, you are going to need the danger SPL, you can follow that guide right there to get it. 1) Do you have root? if so all you need to do is skip to the part about flashing the spl zip file. if you have root i am going to assume to can get into recovery, 2) make sure you have amon's recovery (it makes things so much easier because with ebi1 you need to flash multiple zip files to get up and going at once.
please answer #1 and 2
For what its worth
I use a HTC Dream from Roger's on AT&T here in the US.
At first I used the tmobile radio 2.xxxx.
Then I read that there are higher speeds with the Rogers Radio (3.xxxx) while on EDGE.
I have done side by side tests, and at least for me, there was not a considerable speed change between EDGE speeds on either radio.
So for now, Im back to the tmobile radio.
does this mean all the lousy 32a users can use supported ROMs NOW?/ lol I dont want them all over here now, they are all snotty about G1 users being over in the Sapphire Section
Hi everybody
I just have a Dream Rogers, I have root and installed 4.2.14.1 Cyanogen. My radio is 3.22.26.17 and the SPL is Haykuro 1.33.2005 . Now I want to try the other rom requires 2.xx radio and a different SPL, I can change them or not ?
Please help me because I want to try the other 2.0 2.1 roms but not more experienced, I'm afraid to brick my phone.
Thanks so much.

1) I have root. I followed the rogers cyanogen guide by the book so that's currently exactly what I have. Can I just flash directly to this rom?
2) I don't know how to get amons recovery.
ok, so if yo have root u probably have a recovery image (cyanogen) you want to get amons,
go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
download the R version, i would probably use the via terminal instructions as i think they are the easiest!
once you have that come back here.

when it says you need 2.xx radio, it is usually false, what it should say is that you need the latest radio (ebi1 works)
you dont need to change anything to work a 2.1 ROM, just follow the instructions in the original post, if you do not yet have amon's recovery, follow the post above this.
p.s. I dont think you can change the radio now that you have flashed your SPL, it will BRICK yor phone.

well, the only reason they focus in the sapphire section is because nobody took charge and made a EBI1 thread in the g1 section, we could always use "supported roms" we just needed kernels.

Ok. What about SPL, will the one from the cyanogen tut work?
yeah, follow that guide for your SPL, if you have root i think you can just skip the first part (as its about getting root, if i remember correctly)

erm. Follow what guide?
once you have root and have amon's recovery,
go here:

skip down to the SPL replacement part to get the 1.33.2005 SPL
Hi all. I've recently rooted my HTC Magic (previously with perfected 1.76.0010 SPL post-911 Rogers update) via the method recently posted. This included using the Euro RUU, installing Amon_RA's recovery and then installing the 1.76.2007 Engineering SPL.
Since then I've tried 5 or so roms including Legend, OpenEclair, Cursorsense, etc. Almost all of them installed, but never got past the HTC Magic starting boot screen, even after giving it ~20min (the one exception is Legend, which has worked both times I've tried it).
I am also able to revert back to the Euro ROM (not rooted) with nandroid.
Details:
Sapphire PVT 32A ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.76.2007 (SAPP50000)
RADIO-6.35.10.18 (recently updated to this version try to fix this issue, no luck)
My process so far:
Created goldcard via unlockr
Installed Euro RUU "update" succesfully with no problems
Used ADB to reflash the recovery to latest Amon_RA recovery image
Used the recovery to flash 1.76.2007 zip from this forum
Wiped data/dalvik/ext (though I get an error on the ext wipe, using ADB shows the /sd folder isn't there anyway)
Used recovery to flash the various ROM zips
Should I maybe be using Fastboot to install roms or a different SPL? Am I doing something wrong here? Legend is nice, but I'd like to try others as well.
Thanks for any suggestions you guys can offer!
Were any of those roms specifically for "new radio" (6.xx) ? or did they specify "old radio" (3.xx) And did you make sure the roms were SPECIFICALLY patched or ported for Magic 32A (as opposed to 32B)
Thanks for the response
I ensured they were 32A, but some didn't specify which radio they were for. Is there some sort of reference, since not all them explicitly state which radio to use.

For example the front page of the forum section, you'll see a small handful that have [6.35] in the title, which means they're intended for that radio version.
Ah, I didn't mentally connect that with the radio version.
Some still don't seem to declare which radio to use, ie OpenEclair hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624545.
I can ask in each individual ROM threads if it isn't explicitly stated, but I wanted to see if there was an underlying problem first.
Thanks

If they don't specify the radio, its usually assumed that it is for the old radio 3.xx/2.xx, just like how traditionally if there was a rom for HTC Magic, its usually assumed it was for 32B. So your best luck since "new radio" isn't as common is to seek out threads specifically for your radio.
Ok, good to know. Thanks for your help!
Are there any risks to downgrading my radio? Any effective difference to the end-user at all?
Are you on Rogers? You'll want to stay with the new radio or risk the silly data cutoffs. Cursorsense should work fine with what you have. 2.1 ROMs are a little more tricky and not suggested unless you have the time to fool with it. Did you boot all the way up with the euro rom the first time?
When flashing are you doing a full wipe? remember that the 1st boot of most roms take a long time after which they are fine.

I'd avoid touching the radio at all, most of the bricked devices are due to trying to change the radios. (and as someone said above about Rogers you're on the ideal radio version)
