Quartz coming to UK!!! - Max 4G

http://www.mobiles.co.uk/htc-max-4g.html
just in case your interested

Should be interesting. I remember when they put the HD on their website . Wonder how long it will be ?

is it me or is that thing dog ugly?
the other minor thing is 4G isnt anywhere near ready here is it? or have i missed something?

no your right it is not the prettiest thing in the world and the UK doesn't support 4g anywhere so it is kinda redundent but hey people will but it cos it's new.

Ah would that be David from the O2 XDA forums?
i think we contributed quite a bit to the Touch HD conversation over there several months back, to tell you the truth after i upgraded to the X1 then sold it i hardly ever went back there.

why would the need this device and they have htc hd which is much more better and supported in their country

Hi dazza9075 yeah it's me Hows things? I still spend alot of time in there but just in XDA's when they need something useful though!!!
Hoss your right i have no idea why they would release the quartz as there is nothing that the HD cannot do except 4g of course. The HD is better in every other way.
Ah well

The only logic to them doing this is because 4G in one form or another will be released, my problem with that will be that there will be new hardware on the market long before that happens, my gut tells me that site is selling imports to make a few quid on those folk who want the cutting edge and more helpfully those of us that roam about the world a lot.
Still dog ugly mind.
All is well, i still have my Orbit working, infact i stuck it in my car wired it up and stuck a pay as you go in it and use it to track it... more of an experiment than anything but quite useful of someone tried to nick the car!

that's pretty cool. How'd you manage to do that?

12v car charger run too the boot, fixed the phone down with velcro at the moment, and installed a tracker program, trick was to get constant power, say you used the power from the cigerette lighter it would turn off when the car is off, which isnt much use if your battery dies.
then all i do is send a text message to the phone and it will tell me where its been and more importantly where it is! two problems i found, sat data is quite low in the boot for some reason, maybe the heated rear window has something to do with it, so maybe need to wire up a bigger aerial. Other problem is if the phone is out of network range i wont be able to communicate to it, but helpfully as soon as it gets a connection it "should" send back a log of where its been.

Awesome. Thats all i have to say really.

well its just a test, just trying to find something to keep the old thing in use, shame to let it waste.

Only a 3.2 MP camera, kinda going backwards on that front!

Max

In the future, when there are lots of wimax users, independant user networks will be possible, a kind of peer to peer wireless networking.
Goodbye telcos then.
Max has TV out too.

ah huh, in the future, or at least the future where what you are saying is the norm we wont be using Touch HD based hardware, we'll be 3rd or 4th generation along

I wouldn't hold out too much hope, it has been on there for months!!! Other htc phones have come and gone in that time!!!

Remember guys WiMax isn't actual 4G which is LTE. WiMax is like a go between of 3G and Wi-Fi afaik.

Who choose what network is 4G or 5G ...? 1G,2G,... it's only abbreiation

its not just an abbreviation. It refers to how technology is progressing see this for the whole shebang http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/07/14/future_wireless_tech/
its a really interesting read if your into mobile tech

No, because it doesn't happen all the time.
if your taking it in to a store then try putting a pin inside the back speaker and wiggling it around a bit. Make sure it crackles when audio is played. cuz if u take it in and they mess with it they may just say well i cant see a problem.
Am I the only one who thinks the op should just suck it up for the problem HE caused and stop ripping off tmo... Or maybe I'm just too moral....

I hear ya, I was checking the Slide boards to see if their was anything new for my wife's main phone and my backup and one of the guys over there had a legit fail on his second phone and they offered him a free replacement Slide or re-furbed MT4G and it turned into a 4 page thread of bull**** lies to tell TMO to get out of the Slide and into the MT4G.
I've noticed that people also do this every time the "latest and greatest" comes out and then whine and cry that the manufactures aren't putting out updates... with all the people that do this it makes it appear to the manufactures that there are too many issues with the device to support with future update support.
T-Mobile most likely going to just fix it up. Its not like there's anything really wrong with the phone. He can literally say my phone is rebooting on its own and I haven't installed any apps. It's not really scamming T-Mobile scratches aren't that big of a deal now lying to get an upgrade is more of scamming T-Mobile.

You mean the ROM, right? Pretty sure people are excited about the hardware. Go read Engadget's review of it. Those guys are the most biased iphone fanboys ever and they gave the Thunderbolt a pretty damn good review. The phone is sexy as hell.
Now if you mean you somehow had the Thunderbolt, a CDMA phone, running on T-Mobile, a GSM network, then please do tell. I love good fiction as much as the next guy.

Mytouch 4g is and thunderbolt are basically the same phone few differences. Like an 8mp camera on the thunderbolt and a better ffc. Only thing I'm jealous of is a kickstand. I like it has a g2 like build.

Yeah it has similar guts as our phone, but 4.3 inch display, like you said both cameras are way better, capacitive buttons on the front (subjective feature), kickstand, proper HTC Sense, and in Engadget's test they saw up to 20Mbps on the LTE network. They admitted that once it's loaded with customers that would drop probably significantly, but it's still a good sign.
The internal specs are similar to ours, but other than that, it's different in every way. THAT'S why people are excited about it.
Edit: don't get me wrong, I love my Glacier. I am most certainly not jumping to Verizon. I have had every t-mo phone and the only thing that might make me leave my Glacier is if the Pyramid comes to t-mo. *crosses fingers*. Basically my point is, saying you've used the Thunderbolt on t-mo for months now is just a tiny bit on the hyberbole side.

Well we have a higher pi seeing that our phone is smaller remember just because they have more megapixel doesn't mean it takes better pictures. The VGA or 1.3 camera won't matter for video calling. Only thing I'm jealous of is a kickstand. Then again everything is a personal preference. Hell ill jump to HTC pyramid as well if its on T-Mobile. Something tells me T-Mobile going to take out the kick stand I don't want to buy their cheap case.

The moral responsibility lies on the OP he asked a question and people did there best to respond to it. Just remember it cost HTC a total of $62 to produce the average device and we pay $500+ for it.
wait how did this thread go into a thunderbolt vs MT4G argument

My feedback about this phone

Hey guys, until yersterday i was a galaxy s owner, but i recived a desire s at the HTC conference at Milan (the presentation of HTC Sensation...i'm an italian blogger fo AndroidBlog.it).
I saw this phone also in Barcellona at MWC 2011, but i I was really surprised about it.
I found it very smooth, fast, responsive....something amazing...
with my SGS updated to 2.2.1 and with all the lagfixes activated in ext4 i can't reach a feeling of usability as on this phone!
really suprised!
It's a very good phone!
glad you think so
now i really want this phone
cant wait
Funny, my - admittedly brand new - SGS lagged less than the DS does. Also the DS has severe wifi issues, can't cope with MVNOs properly, is locked down like anything and forces a lot of crap (Locations, I'm looking at you!) down your throat. So, no, all's not right about the Desire S, and yes, it's still a nice phone.
I mean, I totally get that you're happy with your new (free) phone and kudos for disclosing how you got it, but still - couldn't you have at least tried to find something negative about it in the name of balance and/or journalistic integrity?
Sorry for the rant.

Should I?

Alright guys, I just saw pictures of the new Droid Bionic and I gotta say.....WOW. I am really blown away and I think I really want this, plus, moto said there going to unlock bootloaders (not quite sure why everyone forgot this http://pocketnow.com/android/motorola-promises-android-bootloader-unlock-in-late-2011). What do you guys thing? This phone is one hell of a beast but I also am in love with sense but blurs been winning me over. Thoughts?!?!?
2 fascinates and 2 droid x's later i can say if it aint stock android or htc sense i dont want it.
If it has unlocked bootloader so u can run cm7 then thats a different story but dont hold ur breath.
It's all personal preference. If you want to shell out the money for a bionic go ahead. I am quite happy with my thunderbolt. I really don't see how my experience can be improved much. But then again personal experiences vary.

My expierence with the TB has been great but im definitly worried about our longevity because every time i think about it, the TB just seems like a test bed device for 4G. Ill be honest, the only thing holding me back is HTC Sense because I love the heck out of HTC Sense but I really need that next gen power.
I say give the Bionic a look. The hardware looks great and the new Blur is actually really good.

Thats moto official right there, of course there going to do it (Okay I do realize i sound pretty nieve right there), but still Verizon confermed that they have no problems with letting unlocked bootloaders on their networks so I dont see why it wouldnt happen
I don't think I would believe the "no-locked-bootload" bit until I see it.
No Brainer
HTC Thunderbolt
1) When we need to have conference call we use anyone else's phone because the external speaker on the TB sounds like crap.
2) The ear speaker is so high pitched and scratchy sounding it actually hurts!
3) Mine has a bad head phone amp. (can't add base).
4) battery lasts 4 hours.
5) Takes forever to find satellites.
6) Random reboots.
7) Who needs sense when 3rd party launchers and widgets are better and more configurable.
I could keep going but you're probably bored already. The only thing good about the HTC is it's looks. I'd go for the Moto or wait for a dual core Samsung.
@mcargil05
It sounds like you've had nothing but problems. I am surprised you haven't traded the TB for something else. My speakerphone & ear speaker are no better or worse than any other phone I've used. When I stream music over audiogalaxy thru my car aux port, it sounds as good as my ipod. If your phone amp is bad, that should be covered by warranty & you should be able to swap phones. If you're only getting 4 hours between charges, that's definitely a hardware issue or bad battery, or both. I got 7+ hrs on stock before flashing a battery-sipping kernel (16-20 hrs now). GPS lock in 3-7 secs depending on whether I'm indoors. I had a couple of random reboots right after flashing GB-based rom, but nothing since. It's true that Sense is kinda "take it or leave it", not a lot of customizing options there. But I think it's pretty good for a stock app & it does what I need it to do. I used Launcher Pro on my Captivate & Nexus One, and I don't miss it enough to ditch Sense. Some ppl absolutely despise Sense, so there will always be demand for alternative launchers & widgets. Good luck with your TB, if you decide to keep it.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I would trade my Bolt for a Bionic IF the bootloader is unlocked. And I wouldn't be an early adopter on the Bionic. I would only buy it after CM7 is stable on the phone. And by that time... Kal El Tegra 3 phones will be out nearly (they're due by X-Mas, and the Bionic isn't due out until August).
I would say, if you have a Thunderbolt, it's probably best to wait until Xmas/CES time the end of this year/early next year. There are going to be some crazy phones out in 6-9 months from now.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I am good with the Thunderbolt until early next year when we have a new crop of phones. I wanted to the Moto, but was on blackberry and didn't want to wait until the moto dropped when we kept getting pushed back to get 4g and Android goodness.
The battery could be better but I have 3 spare batteries and an external charger for them so it is all good.
Personally the screen is the killer for me. The crappy light leakage, terrible in bright lighting, and don't get me started on the spot lights. Terrible blacks. I bought a $4300 65" plasma to get an amazing picture, why would I not want that kind of picture on my phone if possible.
I dont see how comparing a $4300 dollar TV and a phone makes any sense.

Love my TBolt. Everything has been great with it so far. All the whining you are hearing are from people who haven't tinkered with their phone. Things like low battery life can be solved in a matter of minutes and a google search. I am now going on 10 hours with 65% battery left, which is better than my old X.
Plus I got it on a 2 year plan so 1. I will hopefully be grandfathered into 4G and 2. Will have plenty of time to see how new phones are going to develop before jumping right into them (Kind of like what I did with my TB).
I see nothing but good for the TB for at least another year. Soon the RIL will be released alongside of Gingerbread with 4G speeds. Come on you can't go wrong.

Who is Thinking of Jumping Ship to the SGS2?

Now that it is official I am not sure if it is the device that is getting me excited or all the hype around it. I really like the idea of the larger screen and super thin body. Wish it was qhd though. I guess with every good thing comes a bad thing......
Thinking the only way to get it without spending money is to add a line, cancel my 3D's line and sell the 3D on Craigs list. That should cover the both costs.......Anyone know what Sprint's max cancelation charge is?
Like I said, just thinking about it now and would like to hear what others are planning on doing. Hopefully this doesn't turn into a flame war......Just looking to see if people jumping ship have a better way to get there then what I was thinking of doing......

The SGS II will only be a good phone because of the Dev support. Samsung has a hard time updating the software for some reason. Gingerbread hasn't even been rolled out to the original Epic for god's sake.

The epics an exception. They can't seem to get the keyboard and radio figured out. This is the reason all sgs2s will be the sane and not have a keyboard lol. You also have to remember that update fiasco had more to do with carriers than Samsung themselves. The sgs had their updates right on time. I'm also curious about the op question. I've always wondered what would happen to your handset if cancelled within the first 6 months.

Well i guess it depends on you, I like a thinner device and i know it will have a better camera but I hatethe cheap feel of Samsung devices and.the updates , gingerbread is over nine months old and nothing official for the epic, so what would make me think they will get it on time on the second.device, same thing goes with the photon MOTO devices rake forever to update, that's why I stick with the EVO 3d but all 3 phones are great phones

Well, google didn't have much luck with the nexus s at first either Hence their nickname the Nexus B lol
I won't lie the, gs2 is a beast of a phone. I also think the E3D has been underutilized so far though, this phone has a lot more potential than it gets credit for. Plus the Evo was updated to gingerbread around the same time the epic was getting froyo, it would have came before but HTC waited for gingerbreak to be patched before pushing the update.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
I hate to admit it as I have been a die-hard HTC fan, but, as far as my experience is concerned (on 3rd E3D) I think they really botched this flagship. YMMV, of course.
So long as the SGS2 has a radio that is as good (read: no weaker than) the E3D I'll be happy. The Radio on the NS4G was pitifully weak, the E3D is no better...even after a few. I can live with this. The signal strength indicator can't be trusted on it's own, go by actual measurements and most importantly missed/dropped calls and roaming....and I miss and drop and roam more than ever. It sucks. I do love this phone. I will greatly miss the qHD.
I became fine with the uber-weak radio, but, the final straw is the increasingly bad power-on fiasco. Sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Some times it will be plugged in with a green light locked up tight (requiring a battery pull and SD card pull) *AND* have a dead battery on top of it. It's at the point where I have a backup alarm set up. Yeah yeah yeah, if I need an alarm clock USE an alarm clock...well, no other phone ever gave me any issues, so, I'm going to say that it is not unreasonable to expect my phone to A> turn on and B> charge while plugged into the charger.
I've tried hard, I do love this phone...even the horrid form factor has really grown on me. But I barely use the 3D enough to really miss... I may keep the E3D, it is a rather unique phone, but, SGS2 here I come....Also, aside from touchwiz (which is easily disgarded) it is a nearly stock Android experience....and Samsung has Cyanogen on their payroll. That can't be bad.
I will miss you guys, I'll be back to visit though. It has been fun.

Honestly, I think its more insecure when somebody has a decent phone and has to make a thread asking for their peers/competitions approval to get the other phone. Btw, I have a nokia 1100. Do you think I should upgrade to the nokia 6630?

The reason the new phone does not appeal to me that much is because it is WIDE -even wider than the Evo 4G. And taller too.

I see it more like asking the opinions of people you consider knowledgeable on the subject. You'd be a fool to not ask people who are very familiar with something when considering whether to buy it or not....especially when it's such a relatively pricey gadget. Take it as a compliment that someone (may) respect your opinion enough on the subject to take your advice to heart.
We are a community here. I doubt any of us actually give a crap of another approves of one another in a social context, especially when starting a thread like this (so long as it isn't obviously trollbait).
For the life of me i don't know why you won't take this into the correct forum...at this point you are trolling and trying to cause a flame war..go back to the Samsung website and dry hump a pic of the gs2 ..i mean its specs are unprecedented..a 1.2 ghz dual core...whoaa.. a gig of RAM? You guys know that instant feeling of anger, shame, befuddlement you get when you see a trailer for a movie that has already been made 2 times before?

They must have something coming up their sleeves, we'll see what happens.
Whatever it is, i'm with this device for a while to come. I got some nuts to crack with development for it, and i've picked this one to stop and learn all the ins-and-outs of Android on.
The Achilles heel of this device is the lack of internal storage, (battery aside) to me it's where the ball got dropped on this one. With the 16/32 gig internal available on releasing models, that's a significant difference, and probably skews the playing field a bit.
Speaking of field, the near field technology deal is another thing that's being released that T-Mo might be trying to get devices with and capitalize on. Since Verizon dropped the ball by putting a blockage between the tech and Google Wallet (which, really, is what makes it work for point of sale payments) I can see other carriers trying to get in on it like Sprint did to distinguish themselves from #1 by offering a service they don't.
Dunno, it's really all speculation at this point in the game, but i'm with this one for the long haul. The longer I stick with this one, the quicker/easier it'll be to transition to another and i'll probably be able to pull my ROMs forward to whatever the next good hardware keyboard device is.
(really, after learning all the shortcut keys for the hardware buttons, how could you not have that?? It's like trying to type on a real computer wearing mittens without them.)
This makes me mad, but really, we don't know what exactly this means. I wish more people would have realized what an awesome phone this is.
wth? this makes no sense at all... i could see them discontinuing silders (although not liking the idea) but seeing sensation amaze and the mid/low end LG models too makes me wonder.
perhaps they are the least popular ones? sounds kinda weird tho
Yeah, sensation was/is very popular.... Amaze literally just came out. it's a beast... Dub tee eff
Just my spare change.

Have you read up on mtd any? Something I was noticing as well, although its not like I've gone anywhere near limits of this device... And I'm with u unless they drop a 5" keyboard device... Like a samsung epic note.... Would switch back to samsunk then.

mtd?
Could you expand on that a bit? I skipped sleep yet again, last night, and it's just not clicking right now.
I spent the last couple of hours browsing over the forums here in our little corner of XDA. I didn't really have the head to get any work done, and so much has happened that i've missed recently. Taking a few hours to just browse around and read this or that and catch up a little bit has been helpful.
There was a time not too long ago where i'd read every post in the MT4GS forums, most multiple times. Just a few weeks float by and now there's so much I have to catch up on, there are still a few topics I need to spend some time wrapping my head around.
I'd love to spend a day just reading up on and playing with MR. Root, the download mode thread, and the various Hboot threads to just soak them all in together and see where I could help out. Then i'd love to build on that by taking a good long look at the string of OTA updates and see what it'll take to crack the latest un-rootable roadblock we got tossed. Maybe pick up something along the way to add to it all.
I dunno, at the moment sleep deprived and just a tad overwhelmed by the amount of information here I haven't had the chance to soak in yet, and all the stuff i'm trying to roll out for my ROM - and i've got a lot of threads that are getting out of date that need to be brought current, added to and finished.
This little floating session has kinda given me a good handle on what I need to do to make progress in all the aforementioned areas though, so when I sit down I can just get started instead of trying to figure out what i'm doing.
Kinda useless right this very moment, but that's okay because I got 11 minutes before I have to walk out the door. I'll turn all this over in my head during the day, and hit the ground running when I get to steal some time tonight.
Meantime, what's mtd? lmao

Agreed.
The problem is, at least in my opinion, high end devices with QWERTY keyboards are really rare. If you look at TMob's lineup, they've got the Sidekick 4G, the Cliq2, the gravity smart, the MTQ, and the MT4GS. Only the 4GS is really a high end device, with the rest either being mid-tier, or really crappy.
What's really sad is that the only other carrier who seems to have a decent variety of QWERTY androids is Verizon. Sprint and AT&T don't seem that interested (although AT&T has the captivate glide (which is about the level of the Cliq2, IMO), and I think the general perception is that QWERTY devices are for entry level texters.
I didn't meant to go off on a tangent, but I think the MT4GS, discontinued or not, is going to be the only option for QWERTY lovers for a while. I am hoping we see a MT5GS after a while, but the fact that LG seems to be making MT devices concerns me. Maybe the MT4GS was the last hurrah of the line.
I can see them getting chopped up and divided amongst the other carriers. Maybe they're getting ready for that?

MTD as i remember it from the G1 and the MT3GS is the ability to grow and shrink partitions. Using a flashable .zip and a .txt file on the Sdcard, for example, we were able to grow the data partition at the cost of cache and system (good if we were using an AOSP rom like Cyanogenmod).

Ah nice - thanks. Now that you jog my memory, that was brought up in a thread around here sometime not long ago.
Think it was a thread about app 2 sd? Not sure - thanks for the clarification

Nah, you did great, and that's about as much as I know about it anyways so it put it in a frame of reference for me which was exactly what I needed

Nah, not really - and intentionally so actually. In my quest to make Bulletproof be as stable as possible this is something that would throw a monkey wrench in my work at this time.
In the future it's on the list, because i'm ending up with internal space that is essentially wasted, and this probably the best way to reclaim that and make it usable.
I'm a little jealous of all the knowledge most of you have from having Android phones before - stuff like this you just know about, whereas i'd have to actively look for it unless someone mentions it off-hand, and it's hard to look for things you don't know exist.
That only means they're going to stop selling it. Look at the G2. They declared its end of life eight months after it first went on the market.

And I used mine well past that point.

mt4gs is just a plain good phone with its camera and dual core. Its still sized as a phone should be in my book. We have true ICS working, sense ics working, and a good heap of feature complete GB roms as well... So if they dont produce something unprecedented in the mobile camera business in the following year, its a keeper anyway... i even ordered it from here europe to enjoy this amazing phone. I say get while you still can...lol
i think i figured out why t-mobile would want to do this.
the chances are that new phones with S4 snapdragons are around the corner (MWC) and with them being 28nm SoCs the battery life will be dramatically improved, which to be fair is the real downside of current phones...
still, it's very very sad to see a phone discontinued after just few months
Looks like the rumors of the mT4GS' demise were exaggerated. Looks like it was a fat finger error. There is still life for this great phone. Nothing to see here move along.

hmm well, sell through is not good either, just means a few more months to go before eol

MTD is an acronym for Memory Technology Device. It describes the CLASS OF STORAGE NAND hardware, and the driver infrastructure in the Linux kernel that was responsible for managing it.
Those scripts that you remember using were manipulating the default kernel command line, in order to feed a customized PARTITION TABLE into the MTD DRIVER, rather than the "fixed" one stored within the hardware's SPL.
This does not apply to Doubleshot, since Doubleshot uses an eMMC instead, though there may be similar approaches to feeding the eMMC driver a custom partition table.

Don't most of those 16/32 GB internal storage devices LACK an sdcard slot? If so, then Doubleshot has a potential for up to 34 GB storage, which is 2 GB more than a 32 GB device...
