Samsung Omnia Mass storage mode problem - General Questions and Answers

Hey!
Well I have the following problem, which is most annoying, since it disables me from transfering some things I need.
The deal is: Whenever I switch to Mass storage mode (connection to the PC), I can't transfer any files to my Omnia. When using the phone in this mode (while being connected to the PC), it becomes less responsive. When I use the computer and say.. try to transfer some files.. "My Computer" won't even open for me to access the mobile phone.
And when I switch to Active Sync, I can acces my storage card without any problems, transfer files, watch movies etc..
Now I've searched for a solution, but haven't come up with any, so please, help me out
Thanks!

mass storage mode

Anyone know how to set XDA-ORBIT into mass storage mode ?
Program I need to update regularly will not use ActiveSync
and its such a pain to remove storage card and insert in card reader and then put back in orbit
Thanks for help

curtisy of search forum for "mass storage"
CardExport is the most reliable, but needs purchase.
WM5Storage is free, but you'll need to sign up at Modaco or you can't download it.
The third way is to completely turn off ALL syncing options in ASync (which I do - it will still let you connect), or connect as Guest (which I do in the office). This is easier, requiring no other setup, but the transfer speed's slower because the Async converter runs even if you tell it not to convert anything.
Already connected as guest, and disabled all syncing options
but smart2go maploader wont see the Orbit
I will have to try WM5storage
Thanks for assistance

Browsing files stored on card from PC

Everytime I browse the files that are in my memory card of my pocketPC phone the windows explorer behavior is odd.
For example - when i click on a picture (locatsed on my card) i don't see it, it just shows a property screen insted.
Another example is when i copy files from pocket-pc to pc i dont see the files on my pc (the other way around works)
anyone know why is that?
This is the default behavior if you're browsing files in the PPC with Activesync. Use WM5Storage to turn your PPC into a flash drive and then browsing will be normal.
thanks for the prompt reply - unfortunately it doesn;'t work on my i780.
the PC seemed to recognize it but i don't get a new drive to browse the files on My Computer (running windows xp)
Under Settings | Connections make sure you have 'Enable advanced network fuctionality' unchecked.
it was unchecked.
Now after playing with th program- i cannot even hot sync...blah, nothing works.
under activeSync-->Connection i have only blanks.
Isn't this app the same as enabling USB Mass storage under the USB Connection shortcut?

Yes. In that case uninstall WM5Storage and us that option to turn your PPC into a flash drive for PC. By the way, using WM5Storage you can switch between Activesync connection and USB Storage , the same as with that option provided in your ROM. The point is your PPC can eoither be flash drive or a PPC (Activesync, etc.) but not both at the same time.
Another thing you might want to check is that Windows sometimes doesn't assign a drive letter to a new flash, so you must go into CONTROL PANEL-ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS-COMPUTER MANAGEMENT-DISK MANAGEMENT and manually assign an unused letter to that flash drive. This happens to me often.
thanks - i will give it a shot
Guys - bad news.

This is they way is supposed to happen. If you use your phone as a Mass Storage card reader, you CAN'T do Activesync and viceversa. I don't have that USB2PC setting, but I imagine if you un-select it you'll get back your normal Activesync function.

Sync Problems

Ok, I admit I am a total noob I have only had this phone a day and I was able to get it to sync with my computer last night. However, today when trying to sync I plug it in and activesync makes a sound like its recognized the device but does nothing and continues to say the device is not connected.
I am using the standard rom and have enabled data communications in the connections screen. I have tried hard and soft resets.
Please help me...
Also on a weird note it is detecting the device as a file drive but it has a ton of photos and music that I did not load onto the phone in the device folder. Also the mobile device folder is empty.
Thank you in advance.
Go to Start-> Settings -> Connections-> USB to PC and uncheck the "Enable advanced network functionality".
Connect your mobile to PC. It will be recognized (but not synch) by the ActiveSynch.
Then take it out and re-enable the "advanced network functionality".
Connect your mobile to PC agian and it will work again.
This works for me. It happened yesterday.
No go. Windows recognized it as an mobile device but activesync was still unable to connect to the device.
Also, when connecting the device as a disk drive I can see some apps i've installed in the program file, but it is still showing alot of items I didn't add. These files don't appear to be on the device. After deleting those extra files I tried to send new pictures to the device which would not transfer.
Any Ideas?

Syncing music via WMP

I have attempted to sync music for two days now with no success. It recognizes the phone in WMP and when I drag the music into the SYNC window it all shows correctly. Even says how much space will be left. After hitting sync it says "sync complete you can disconnect the device now" but nothing happens. Anybody else had the problem and found a solution. Or any ideas?
Did you ever get this to work? I right now am trying to sync my phone to WMP and WMP won't recognize it. I have Windows 7 32bit. The phone gets recognized easily when it put it in Mass Storage mode. When I put it in media mode the PC makes the sound that a USB device was detected, but nothing happens.
I haven't installed any USB drives, but what I see they are for XP and Vista.
Anyone know what I could be doing wrong?
Also I am using the Samsung launcher and not any other one when I am doing this, don't know if it matters.
If you are running a launcher other than TW it won't show up as a syncable device in WMP when you connect with media mode. There is a pop up message but its easy to miss.
You need to run launch switcher and make sure you are using TW Launcher and then plug in the USB cable and WMP should see your device.
Hope that helps.
Bob
If you are in mass storage mode, once you plug your Captivate into the PC, a notification will appear in the notification bar. Slide down the notifications and press it. This will mount your internal and external SD cards so your PC can see them. Syncing with WMP should work then.
Thanks! I got it working but not sure what I did to make it work, as you will see I did several things:
1) I uninstalled the MGtek Dopisp or whatever that program was that would allow iPods to sync to WMP
2) Then I installed the X86 drives for Samsung phones
3) It TRIED the MTP connection but Windows driver install failed again on the driver when I tried using my phone as a media player.
So I tried it again as a Mass Storage Device and it actually showed up in WMP and I was pleseantly suprised it let me since to either the internal memory or SD card.

[Q] Mass Storage doesn't work after OTA JB and Rootkeeper

So I finally got my phone and went through the rooting process, I have root and I'm on JB, I triple checked, but I put my Titanium backup folder on my old SD card which before updating I could access on my new phone, but now I can't seem to get to pull it up. I keep getting "Unfortunately, com.motorola.huxvmm.settings has stopped when I choose the storage option in settings. I also can't get my phone to show up as a removable drive to drop the files onto the internal memory. Besides that everything seems fine, any ideas?

+1 :good:
You could try one of the apk'(s even here on XDA putting a widget on and having mass storage (USBMassStorageToggle, Multi-mount-sd), but since I've lost root (sigh....) when passing the OTA, I can't tell if that actually works....
They switched to MTP mode as it is more secure (something about allowing the app storage and user storage to be the same to increase memory) and allows the device and PC to have access to the memory at the same time.

MTP is supposed to be compatible with the USB spec, but there seems to be a problem for some/lots of users: When you plug in and select MTP, the phone mounts under "Portable Devices" (not "Devices with Removable Storage") like it used to in the past. This in itself is not a big deal, but the issue seems to be that though you can navigate to "Internal Storage" in Windows--that corresponds to /storage/sdcard0 on the phone (at least, mine)--some files on your phone may not be visible on your computer.
For example, I can create a folder in Windows in Internal Storage and see it on my phone, but if I delete that folder from my phone, it doesn't "sync" that delete to the computer.
I've made sure I have the latest Motorola drivers, and tried different USB cables, etc.
The fix I use is a bit complicated, but it works for me: I downloaded Total Commander (TC) on my phone, but I suspect you can do this with any other Android software that allows you to connect to a shared folder on your computer once connected to a USB.
In my case, I did the following:
On my computer, shared the folder, C:\Temp
in TC (on my phone), used the LAN (windows Network) Plugin to connect to that shared folder
Copied files from my phone to the shared folder on my computer
Great job. I've been using total commander too. It's the best and the fastest file manager I know. It has much more functions than (known from Linux) midnight commander.
Well worth the money with plenty plugins. Download shareware version from ghisler.com
Also there is a plugin for web dav too.
