That´s a good question
On my opinion is not the "official" succesor but it´s the closer we can have till now on the new devices
Of course that fantastic swivel to move from micro lap top to PDA will hardly repeated again...
Me as Universal user as my main phone/PDA I think it´s a not replacement but it´s something to consider as has nice screen and nice keyboard
I don´t think HTC will launch another device more similar at least in 2 years (Hope I´m wrong)
Just my opinion
I might be wrong but I don’t think HTC made enough money with Universal. Furthermore a Building Successor for Universal would be much more expensive than current existing devices.
With the current economy situation I don’t think HTC will risk putting a device on to market which will or cannot amortise the R&D cost.
I believe TP2 is good/best choice for replacing Universal.

Not sure if they did not make $, remember Universal was launched on 2005 and on that time not any device on earth was so complete and powerfull (Even to this date still compete with new models in some specs!)
Refer to the voting here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446362
But agree, TP2 is the onlt decent replacement I can see in the future
I read from Brighthand, ASUS is going to produce a similar model. We need to wait for more specs to come out though. Hopefully it will have a faster processor.

HTC TOUCH PRO REVIEW with pictures
I found this site which has detail pictures and a nice review of upcoming HTC TOUCH PRO2.. well I would say confirmed 100% this baby going to be mine

I´ll wait...
I´ll wait for ASUS model that cktlcmd commented
But also have TP2 as an option
Just want to have all possibilities before I renew my device
Well IMHO is strange about upcoming Asus clamshell device.. They have already one model M930 and they have screw up big time in sales numbers with that device.
Anyhow is nice to have choices

I'ved looked for a mention of the Asus, but don't find anything.
But do you think the Asus will be as customisable as the HTC phones?

Yes, ASUS, don't have it on their site. If WM is it's OS, I don't see why not.
The WM phones Toshiba released can be customized. What will make ASUS phones different?

For me it's different. If I can stay away from HTC, I will. Until they stop using Qualcomm as their processors specially those 624MHz and below.

Can't we then petition HTC to change/upgrade their processors?
Does anybody know if they read these threads?

If you think you can make a difference, go ahead...POWER to you my friend. But in all honesty, I don't think they will listen. I remember there was a petition here regarding those missing drivers sometime ago...what happened? NOTHING. HTC have a good working relationship with Qualcomm. It is not purely Qualcomm's fault, HTC has a bigger role played, I am dismayed at Qualcomm for letting HTC degrade their processors.
Well currently I am struggling again with making my decision.
Currently the Touch HD in Hong Kong cost ca. USD 650-700. 3months later when Touch pro2 will come out the price will be further down to I guess 500-600USD. But in other side the Pro2 sure will cost ca. 800-950USD in the beginning.
Looking to the Technical Spec on those 2 devices it comes down really to the keyboard. Now the question: is it worth TO PAY 300-400$ more for having device that has a keyboard.. What you guys think???

Personally I find myself using the hardware keyboard of my Fuze less and less and the on-screen full keyboard less and less. From what I've seen of the HD I could easily see myself ditching the hardware keyboard all togetter

Its a matter of lifestyle. When I used the Pocket PC I thought I would never need a physical keyboard. But since using the Universal, I wonder how I will do without one! It speeds things up considerablly especially when traveling. I would approach the subject differently - read the reviews and take note of the shortcomings of the HD as a phone. The features of the TP2 outway the cost factor - and you have a keyboard when required. TP2 seems to be more business orientated.

Well, the amount of $ is a lot!, but as a happy Universal user and having tested a lot of "non physical keyboard" devices, I can say that it will never be compared!
Physical keyboard and specially Uni one is the fastest way to type.
It will depend on the use of the device, if only for watching videos and music then kb is not important, but if you use it for typing mesaages, e-mail and surfing (Like I do) then kb is VERY important...
So if we don´t rush to buy devices as soon as they are launched (Wich compnies want us to do) then we wait a few months and a new one appear and that is the perfect time to buy!
COnsumism will never stop, but we inteligent consumers have to think when is the best time to buy.
Ok, so I have a decision to make, and only till Wednesday to make it ...
Currently, I have the Palm Treo Pro. It's a GOOD phone, I LOVE the keyboard and I love how small/light it is. I DO NOT like the proprietary USB of the "end" key as its uber sensitive. Also, most of my programs don't work on the screen (OliveTree Bible, Mud Inc. Pocket Cribbage, and Handmark Monopoly V1) ... so my other options are
HTC Diamond - I get $ back, but, I lose microSD Card or HTC Pro, I pay around $100 more, but I get the microSD Card slot and sliding keyboard.
WiFi is important, and I should point out, I am on the TELUS Network.
HTC touch Pro 2

hmmm TP2 ain't on Telus ... not yet ... not till the end of '09 / early '10 when they turn on their UMTS/HSPA
kepp this phone until tocu pro 2 comes out
One more for TP2
Is not the "Perfecrt" device but is one of the best candidates available
THIS IS NOT THE TOUCH PRO 2! This is the Touch Pro. Version 1. Telus Mobility DOES NOT HAVE TP2 yet and won't till probably December or January ...
I think they're all recommending that you wait for the TP2, they understand that you're talking about the TP1. I well third and fourth that notion. If you can wait for the TP2, it'll be well worth it. You'll probably have to pay quite a bit of money without a contract.
However, to answer your question, i'd definitely go with the TP over the Diamond.

I can't wait 14-18 months for the TP2 (which is about how long Telus will take to get it *L* as they have ONLY had the Treo Pro for about a month!) ... I think I'll go on Wednesday and get the Touch Pro.
Then why don't U buy it unlocked from another country next month
Because Telus is CDMA but soon (2010) to be UMTS/HSPA

Ok some usefull info for you:
Diamond - has serious heat issues and its very well know to fry its own screen. HTC are constantly fighting people and refusing to repair faulty units. I owned one and then returned it as it could also not play music without jumping/skipping. Both these issues can be easily found by going to the Diamond section of these forums.
TouchPro - (not the TP2 as everyone else seems to have got confused over) Never owned one so comments are limited to what can be read on this forum but, I miss having a keyboard and am now ordering an Asus on Monday that has a keyboard. Typing an email on the Diamond was a pain in the a*&e and its only marginaly easier on the bigger screen of my Omnia.
Palm thingy - never owned one, never used one. Can't comment.
If I HAD to chose between these then in all honesty, i'd probably keep the Palm! Why? HTC build quality sucks donkey balls. Its a well known and easily googled reputation. Its a shame really as they spec out the phones very well and seem to have every intention of making excellent devices, just somewhere the penny pinchers seem to take control and quality drops.
Best of luck with whatever you chose today
edit:
Diamond overheat issue - dont think anymore needs to be said on this
Music link - with $125 reward for fix
Music link - check out how many pages!
And just for good measure, another music link
Very quick google brings up over 32000 hits on hardware quality

Maybe the guy doesn't have/want to spend hundreds of £/€/$ on a phone?
OK so ... I was downtown yesterday, getting my Security Guard License and walked through Toronto Eaton Centre ... and I picked up the Touch Pro.
So far, I'm happy. I'm still testing things out and seeing what is good etc but ALL my games work, all my programs work AS THEY ARE SUPPOSED to, and I'm happy ...

Especially a phone that only does 3G at 2100MHz to use in a country that uses 850/1900.
Hi guys,
After having my Uni for a good while now and the HTC Monet before that, I've gotten quite attached to the whole smartphone shebang. I've got some cash to spend on a new one though, and was hoping that some of you guys could give me advice on what to get. I've picked a few that appeal to me, and any other suggestions in the same price range would be great.
I wouldn't object to second hand phones but only if they're good quality (like Computer Exchange's A-grade) and almost as new.
Right now, I'm thinking:
HTC Dream - Not a beautiful thing, but I'd like to see whether I prefer Android or WinMo; what's the general consensus on this?
HTC S740 (Rose, I think)
HTC Diamond
HTC Raphael
If I could choose one of these phones to have right now, it would definitely be the Raphael as it has everything I want (touch screen, QWERTY, GPS) and more. But there's a pretty large price difference between this and the others, and I don't know if it's worth another £100+ more than a Diamond just for the QWERTY keyboard and an FM radio.
The Diamond is one of my favourites, but after having a Uni for so long I'm a bit scared of having to tap out texts with the touch screen only - is this easy?
That problem is solved with the S740, however I don't really want to have to use WMS and a smallish screen for everything.
One final question as I'm a still a slight n00b - the AGPS systems don't cost anything to run after you buy something like TomTom 7, right? I'm not on a great contract and 3G access would cost me, so I don't want to keep having to access Google Maps or something every time I want to find my way around.
Anyway, thanks for reading. Sorry if I accidentally aggravated you guys by posting in the wrong board.
I added a poll too because it might make answers easier and, well, it looks pretty.
I'd get HTC Rose.
The best keyboard imo. The only other phones with keyboards that beat the crap out of it are HTC Touch Pro2 and Nokie E90.
Thanks, but how much would I miss out on with WMS?
Get the latest & greatest: the Touch Pro 2! See the Rhodium forum section for details...
As much as i would love a shiny Touch Pro2, there's no way I can afford it, both on contract and alone.
Maybe I should wait and see if the original Touch Pro gets any cheaper once the 2 is out...

if you need a keyboard the best option is tp from your list
Thanks Orb. Yeah, I have pretty much fallen in love with the keyboard on the Universal and it's the reason why I want a decent one on whatever I buy next. I sort of wish I didn't ask about the TP getting cheaper, because I want it now . Stupid impatience. Isn't Windows Mobile 7 supposed to be released in 2010? Maybe it would be worth waiting for that if it has multi-touch and things. I assumed that stuff won't work on most (if not all) existing handsets(?).
While we're talking, how much do you like your S621? I know a guy who got one when someone else upgraded, and he basically has no idea what it is nor how to use it. I was thinking of buying it cheap and messing with it a bit (I'm not considering it as a possible new phone).

If you wanna wait for wm7 then prepare to pay more for a device wich has it included!
I asume that it´s a matter of budget, so wm7 will not be cheap when its launched (I don´t think we see it before Sept 2010)
As for noble S621 I think a reasonable price (depending on the conditions) is around 100-150USD, it´s a great smartphone, but have a look on marketplace before you make your desicion, as you can find very good deals on used devices from trustable members.
Good luck then,
Oh, I definitely can't be bothered then
Someone will probably get something working on the popular devices anyway.
I think it's actually an Exaclibur (S620) but it has an AZERTY keyboard because it wasn't from the UK, and I could probably buy if from him for about £15 if I'm lucky. Although, it is a bit scratched.
I'll probably end up going for the original Touch Pro, maybe now or maybe when it's cheaper. Anyone got any cheap and good sites/shops? Except for things like eBay and Computer Exchange.
Yeah it´s the Excalibur S621 or S620 is almost the same.
If you can buy it for 15 pounds please let me know where!
I want one really!
Have you visited marketplace section on this forum?
I would go 1st than to go any other site as you can find good deals!
I just bought a Touch Pro @ good price.
let me know about the cheap excalibur please, I´m interested.
Cheers,
Okay, thanks for the tip.
I've asked about whether or not the Excalibur is up for grabs, but I think the keyboard is AZERTY rather than QWERTY (I don't know what they use in Mexico).
we use qwerty but I can get used to new layout...
still interested!
Cool, I'll tell you when I get a reply but it's possible that I won't be able to get my hands on it until September. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your TP?
Ok
Let me know
PM sent with your question
Thanks. So I guess the general idea is just to save up for a Touch Pro. And hopefully AGPS is free
As the title says I have just brought a new touch pro 2 and I like its keyboard very much. I also have my touch hd and was thinking of selling it but the trade your phone in places will pay £140 and I am wondering if there is any reason I should keep my touch hd?

140 that is a ripoff ebay it if you dont want it. also i really like phones i would keep them. just look at my sig.
I keep two smartphones and a dumb phone just in case (a moto razr), check my sig. I keep my dash usually as a back up if i need to go somewhere and im in the middle of flashing my kaiser. That and i flash my kaiser a lot, so if something goes terribly wrong i still have a smartphone i can use. I'd keep it, just in case.

I have actually been asking myself the same question lately as I expect the HTC Supersonic to come out and I have a touch pro 2. For me the question boils down to the following. I need a GPS, I want something i can comfortably surf/watch movies on while I am on the go, I like using my touch pro 2 as a MP3 player, I like using a phone as a email device/RSS reader and I like using my phone as a mobile Instant messenger device and for keeping up with my Facebook.
The problem is I can't use 1 phone to do all things at the same time. I can GPS or I can phone or I can use it as wifi hotspot or I can chat, or I can MP3...
With 2 phones I can GPS on either one and use the other as a phone. When not phoning I can hotspot so on so forth.
Looking at things from the oppositte perspective, I can take viliv s5 or a dell mini 5 and do everything I want to do but phone at the same time. If I get it with 3G I can even hotspot with the mini.
SO I am strongly leaning towards getting a MID device.
Have 2 and right now the Hermes is just a backup.

Those two are good phones, but why do you like the Excalibur? It doesn't look good.
Excalibur is my wife´s telephone and it´s really good one for someone that needs basic functions only
As you can see keyboard devices are my choice
I think most on here have more than one phone, I have a whole host of winmo phones in my collection:
XDA
M1000
2 x Athena
Touch HD
Omnia
Hermes
Spv
Plus a couple of windows PDA's
Next month will be getting an iphone for the wife to use, april will get a desire.

It's a classic device modded more than any other SP of it's time Very well made with a great hardware keyboard
3 in sig as i don't see the point in selling to get a menial amount of money also like to have a back up.
Just like orb3000 the gf uses the Excalibur
i have 3 devices i never really use 2 i have a xda2 i never use not in like 3 years a blackberry curve 8900 i might swap back to soon and current a touch hd. but as soon as i get my android device i will use that as well so 4. but theres no point in me selling any of my devices i will just spend the money on more phones and if i sell my blackberry 8900 id probly get £150 i can't get any phone for that money that would be better than my 8900
Well it depends if you like your second phone or not. If it's sitting gathering dust and you don't have a use for it, I'd suggeest ebaying it as anything gathering dust is just wasted money. As with cars and general tech gadgets they all generally drop in price in time. So if don't have a use for it you are better selling it off sooner rather than later to recoup your purchase.
I have two lines, so the HD2 for my personal, the iPhone 3GS for my work line, and then the Hero is my extra phone.
I know the cellphone’s technology change quickly, but I’m really tired to change cellphone.I have used the Simens,Sharp,Samsung before, but all of them have many problem. So do u have any idea of which brand’s cellphone can use as long as it can?
If you're going to get an Android device and have a bit of patience, I'd say wait until Q4 2010.
I know it's a huge pain (heck, I've been playing the waiting game for years now) but it is obvious that a big technological leap is on the way: higher resolution, dual-core processors, better display technologies and Android 3.0 (which means no longer being dependent on OEMs). It's the first time in years that I can look at cell phone specs and say "Hey... this actually looks relatively futureproof".
Nokia candybar phones last a long time, and my htc blueangel has been used daily since 2004, and still works fine

more complex devices= more power and more bugs.
I know MANY people in proffesional environements that are still using old Nokia 61xx/62xx phones. These monochrome display phones still do about 9 years on 1 charge and allow you to read "War and Peace" on the talk time.... oh and they don't crash either and never require rebooting!

HTC Leo!!!
Capable of running Android too
Moto phonese last forever. I have one that programs music in midi, they;re really hardy as well. If you just need to make calls, this is a good brand to get.

What? You mean you don't want a 10 year old phone? WHY???
I doubt you will beat an online price but that would depend very much on your country I guess?
i bought a iphone from an online marketplace whose name seemd to be Topons, and it is still used without any problem though it is cheap.lol... am I a lucky guy?
If it's the genuine device and not some knock-off then I don't see why a phone obtained from any source would be more reliable than any other (assuming the same software etc.).
Probably a blackberry.
The problem with the iphone is you cannot remove the battery.
I kind of feel this thread is a lost cause.
Phones (all tech for that matter) will keep being replaced. You cant buy future proof technology! A top end PC is good for what a year? two years?
A mobile phone a year if your lucky, half a year...?
A TV a few years before something better?
You cant buy a phone now, that will not be 'under-spec' in as little as two years time!
The question you should ask your self is do you really need a more 'powerful' phone, or could you live with what you have now for the next few years?
I own a HTC HD2, and I can honestly say I'll want a new, more 'powerful' phone in a few years to play higher quality video, better games ect.
But do you want that?
My dad is 'tech savi' but hes still using a Sony Ericsson K800i. Because it does everything he needs! (having said that he is getting a desire this year... lol)
As for the build quality, you'd be lucky to find any phone that wont be dead after a few years use! Unless your super careful...
Having said that, that K800i has had a hard life and still works perfectly and looks fine...
Its all about what you need from your device. Technology will just keep advancing.

Post = epic win
I still see people using moto razr's, even razr2's. If your not a phone geek and just want a decent reliable phone to make calls and text on, those seem to be the most popular.
I agree with the above post also, if you want something a little more 2010 and future proof, a Blackberry is a good choice too.
It's best to go for the phones that are the most advanced now, such as the nexus one, desire, iPhone 4 and such, cause they will get updates for a long time, and it will be some time before they become out-dated beyond use. For example, the Nexus One and the HTC Desire shall be able to use Android 3.0, Gingerbread, while the others won't.
And go for something like Android, cause with the ROMs and such that are out there, you can easily change its ROM and it will feel like you've bought a new mobile.
