A few general questions - General Questions and Answers

I haven't posted a question thread in a while, but I think the time has come again xD
1. Is there a Window's Mobile ROM for the HTC Dream? I don't really care for android, even though I would probably use it for a bit.
2. Is the Touch Pro 2 available from any carriers in the US?
3. Is there any kind of development of a custom ROM for the Samsung Eternity, or is there an update coming out in the near future. My wife has one, stopped using it for a while until she broke her iPhone (water damaged like CRAZY), and is now using it again.
4. ...I thought I had more, but I guess I'll ask more later.

That will result in fewer sales on a small percentage of users! Probably enough to make even DEV's not want to even jack with it.

They did jack with it and it's now permanent rootable along with the mt4g. People like to be challenged.
From a phone
It will eventually come to all but the nexus series of phones and the geeksphone, and the XDA community will find a way to disable that chip in time.
Why post an article that holds no weight to our phone? And that phone is rooted already.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
If the phone reverts to the original software, how are they ever going to do updates?
I have a feeling that there is a way to make permanent changes. It will just take time for someone to figure it how their updates work.

[Q] GooApple?

I was looking around the interwebs, and I came across a unique phone called the GooApple v5. It is essentially android on a surprisingly well replicated iPhone 4. This looks tempting, but then again it is from some obscure chinese company I've never heard of. Has anyone tried this yet? How have they not caught flak from Apple yet, when Apple sued samsung for having a phone that just resembles the iPhone? The main thing that looks interesting is the iOS interface. Could it be MIUI themed to look like iOS? What is the build quality like, is it composite glass and metal like the real iPhone 4?

Or, just get a normal Androphone? Never trust Chinese knock-offs, ever.
Gooapple has been around a while. It is NOT 3G.
Take a look. It's a nice wee gizmo I guess.

This other one may be 3G but Android 2.2 and I don't imagine many people will do roms for them lol.

While I do appreciate your input, telling me to get a normal android phone is just plain ignorant. I already have plenty, I just wanted to see what's up with this phone. Not trying to be a jerk, but you would not believe how many people have tried to answer my questions by saying "Just don't ask." If I didn't want an answer, I wouldn't have posted. /rant

They get away with it the same way MIUI gets away with it. They hide behind the great china firewall. Laws in the country save them from copyright issues. Reason why most knock offs are from China. They can and have been blocked at customs due to these issues.

Oh you can but. No promises that it won't be denied at the border. Build quality is normally sub par. The rom is normally a knock off as well. Usually a non supported hacked together version that no one supports.

No support whatsoever, in fixing these problems.
And the phone itself is very slow.
Its actually not THAT bad, not as good as our phones....but not terrible
I don't think zelendel's comments are true at all, or they certainly aren't now. There is loads of support for them in this forum alone. There are new ROM's and development and they are built with pretty good quality. I have a Gooapple V5 3G and the only problem I have with it is that it sometimes has a bit of lag.

Because it is stock android, which means no BS and for most people that is enough.
@elias, the only option you have if you want ICS and don't want to root is to wait for the official OTA which should be rolling out soon. Once you have ICS from the OTA you won't be able to roll back to GB without rooting (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one)

I think that has very little to do with being a power user. NeXus phones have always been developer based phones made to mod, root, and hack. People that buy these phones, for the most part, buy them because of that and not because they want a vanilla android experience. Of course there are roms out that can get you close to that but I would venture to guess that if you took a pole of neXus users 99% of them want a custom experience, not a vanilla one. So for me to ask why someone would buy a Nexus and not root it is probably a question that a lot of people would be interested in. And nice side ways attempt at a jab with the comment about people spending to much time here. People that are here enjoy their time here. Enjoy learning. Enjoy modding, rooting, hacking. But I don't expect some one with a stock development phone to understand that. You have your hobbies we have ours.

That is definitely why some people choose a Nexus devices, but there is also a large amount of people who choose them for "quick" updates and a stock experience. It is the only way to achieve those things. Some people probably also choose the Nexus S because it is a really nice, smaller handset with an awesome screen.
Don't forget, some people got them because best buy was giving them away for free.
Not me, although I did get mine for free, I got mine for "fastboot OEM unlock".

As others have said, this was the wrong section for this, but I will not harp on that.
I also want to apologize for a very poor showing from our community. Sometimes this forum is an embarrassment, especially in juxtaposition to other Linux communities. There are a good deal of very arrogant people here, who just cant seem to help jumping all over the new guy. Im surprised no one called you a noob.
With all of that said, I want to agree with your posting above. Speaking as a system admin for a mid-sized company, your reasoning for owning this phone is the exact reason why it has been handed out to every employee here.
Now on to your question. Because of the age of our phone, the development community behind it is very mature. Not the users, but the tools. It is very hard to brick your phone, in fact you might say you would have to go out of your way to truly brick the device. You might get a soft brick, but even that is hard to do and is still easily fixed via ODIN.
As others have said, there are very easy to follow instructions on unlocking and rooting this device. These are not really hacks, as this phone was meant to have these things done to it. I do understand the hesitation, though after the first time you go though doing it, you will wonder what you were so scared of in the first place. You can always give this thread a try, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250583&highlight=one+click+root
to make things easy on yourself. After you get it rooted, familiarize yourself with making a NAND backup in the custom recovery first thing. This is basically an image backup of your device allowing you to jump back to safety should you do something wrong during a custom rom install.
Here is the way I look at it. If you have your phone rooted with a custom rom and it breaks and you need to return it for some reason, then ODIN will flash you back to stock and you'll have no worries about returning it to Sprint. If you some how destroy your phone to the point where not even ODIN will have access to fix it(AKA your phone goes swimming), then Sprint will not have access to the device either and will have no clue you rooted it. What some of these knuckleheads are poorly trying to get across to you, is that the phone you own, wants to be rooted.
Good luck and welcome to the community.

Scared to buy because i heard development might be dead.

Im planning to buy it today but after reading threads about how development have been slow and might come to a halt soon. Coming from an HD2 i dont want to buy this phone only for rom development to cease 6 months later. Any reassurance you guys can offer me or should i just stay away?
Can you point to a thread where it was said development might be slowing? It seems to me like development is picking up since the release of the kernel source.
The latest AT&T OTA update might slow things slightly because it blocks the old root and unlocking exploits, but I don't think it's anywhere near dead. Still, I could be wrong. Where did you see this stated?

Ah, okay. Well, not having had any other Android phone, I don't really know what to compare it to. I've been satisfied with the options available, but I'm not a Flash-aholic. There are a fair number of both Sense-based and AOSP-based ROMs to choose from, and so far none of the devs seem to be going anywhere. But, development will never equal something like the S3 or even the international One X, just because of the smaller userbase.
The other factor to consider is that if you get an AT&T One X today, it might very well come with the 2.20 update, meaning you wouldn't be able to root or unlock it right away.
It's not dead yet but even scrosler said that he will be moving on to another phone if something happens to his One X. AT&T should be ashamed of themselves for locking down this amazing phone. However the enthusiasts aren't their target customers. They don't care enough about losing us to change.
The OP is screwed if he gets a phone with the new software.

Having the same problem with the Tapatalk app.
Also can't get in with any of the XDA apps.
As far as dev being dead. I don't see how. Check out the original development section, the guys are rocking in there and working hard to get things moving. Team Nocturnal is pumping out ROMs and updates for those ROMs. If the ultimate goal of "dev activity" is AOSP, which always seems to be the case, then we are very close.
The sky isn't falling, Chicken Little.
Back when the Captivate came out, people were saying the same thing for the first year the phone was out. Now go check out the Captivate forums. They are still going strong.
I think this has more to do with people not getting what they want RIGHT NOW, than anything else. Everyone wants perfect CM9 and CM10 as soon as they get the phone. It seems like a lot in the community frequently forget that these guys are doing this for free and of their own accord. Sometimes they run into problems like devices being bricked, broken...or not even having the device at all. Sometimes they are kids in HS and have other things on their plates. Not everyone has time to sit infront of a computer and develop for 12+ hrs a day.
I had my SGS2 for a good 6 months before CM9 nightlies came along.
It's also worth mentioning that if you don't at least donate to the devs, you don't really earn the right to ***** about anything.

If you're looking for a phone with development, go get an N1, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, etc... We got the HOX because it's the best phone on the market right now, regardless of the development scene. We are all thankful that we have a development scene, of course, but I think we all chose this phone before looking at the existing scene. As the phone matures, the scene will only get better.

I don't really store music on my phone, mostly pictures and videos which take up a lot of space. And if you add in a nandroid or two you + Titanium backup backups you are looking at a phone with no more storage room. Man such a bummer... I had no idea it was only 16g I guess I was looking at the International x and figured it would be the same as far as storage was concerned. Such a beautiful phone to be spoiled by this. [Q] Any way to turn this into a tablet with WiFi only?

This was my wifes POS Phone till I upgraded her to a SGSIII for Christmas. Now I have a device that would be perfect for my daughter if it weren't for the pesky phone option and Sprint bloatware. Are there any roms available that strip this phone to bare bones with no radios except WiFi? Haven't been able to find any and it might not be on the top of the Dev's todo list so if anyone is up to a ROM that will make this device at least usable because as a phone it SUCKS, but for a kiddo it would be a great toy with some of the game apps. Thanks in advance, and if I missed a ROM that does exactly what I'm asking in the mountains of pages in the Dev forum, please use only a small flame as I'm old and have a cold LOL.
A tip: when asking for help you might want to avoid talking trash about a device we users enjoy using.
My advice, 'the device sucks' and is a 'pos' so why bother doing anything with it. Go buy yourself, your kid or whoever an ipod and move on.

Just hate HTC. Have since the TP2. No appologies for that when they make life just such a pain in the ass. Even cringed when the wife chose it but cest la vie. I'm not going against the boss. Maybe I'm just stupid but I've tried rooting but its a 2.3.4 and every option this thread gives me doesn't work for some reason or another. ShiftRR doesn't run at all saying ADB is at fault but I can ADB into the whole phone myself no problems, ShiftySonOfA almost works but creates a boot loop that thankfully is repaired by doing an --undo, Quickroot seems to work but then unroots the phone just as soon as it reboots. Trying to do it manually using the info on here gives me exactly the same boot loop as the ShiftySonOfA.BAT file does and trying to update from SD using a PG06img.zip I got from a rootkit fails. I can't help it if I'm a Samsung fan. Their goal in life isn't making their users stress out over their phones by daring to think they can do better than they can. If its too much to ask that my RAM isn't more than half full just with OS and bloatware because this phone refuses to root then so be it but even if its miles below my Nexus it's still MILES above any iPoo device.
Then throw it out and go buy a portable media player, or better yet send it to a dev who would put it to use and go buy some type of portable media player.
Edit: and to anyone who actually wants to try and help this guy, does this really seem like a person we need to deal with in our little speedy community in the future?

ROFL Speedy community. Half of you are talking about swapping out to Photons and the other half are moving to One X's. yes I've read an awful lot before posting a question. Guess I'll be getting absolutely no help here. Not that there is much help available for this device when all the links are broken and the ones that are working, don't work for their intended purpose. Feel free to delete the thread MOD I'll stay where I'm welcome, in the Samsung sections.
Happy to see you leave, please don't come again.
Edit: and you couldn't have read to much or you would have been able to root it. Well then again, you were calling your recovery touchwiz in another thread soooo... I'm guessing you have some trouble grasping things at times.

Well its probably been a while since you researched how to root, because if you done that more recently or even looked at my sig, you would have already rooted that shift. I posted it here and in 3 other well-known forums so its hard to believe that you haven't found it.

Happy to see you leave, please don't come again.
Edit: and you couldn't have read to much or you would have been able to root it. Well then again, you were calling your recovery touchwiz in another thread soooo... I'm guessing you have some trouble grasping things at times.

Samsung sections?! Have fun! I don't see how you'd be welcome there either. Also I hope you enjoy your screen burn in Galaxy Nexus - http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/895626/4731866441_f37348315f.jpg . Ugh Buh Bye
