Now that v1.3 is out and you have a choice between all 3 builds, which one are you going to use? Why? Feedback on how many people are using which can be useful when deciding what to support in the future.
Personally, my vote is for ADP1. Reasons: US localization and no MyFaves. Plus I hate soiling my ADP1 phone with G1 branding
I think I'm gonna have to go with the Adp1 version
Stericson
I'm using RC30 because I just reinstalled all of my apps with apkInstaller and I'm too lazy to do another wipe, then again, I don't have myFaves and I never use MSN, AIM, and YIM so the ADP1 build is right for me
ADP1. Don't need MyFaves or the other IM clients. That said, if the G1 receives a cupcake-fortified update and the ADP1 doesn't...
Edit: Is voila.ogg the default notification sound in ADP1, or is that your customization JF?
Argh. The dreaded quote-instead-of-edit. Delete this please =(

Ahh. The buildprop file of official updates includes the following line in the additional build properties, which probably properly sets it:
ro.config.notification_sound=F1_New_SMS.ogg
I'm assuming once official update.zips for ADP1 are released we'll know what the default additional properties are. On that note, does the ADP1 documentation state whether ADP1 updates are coming at all?
what is this documentation you speak of?

Well, that one small square sheet of paper that (I assumed) was a complete and nuanced corpus on the workings of the ADP1 and all future support of said device. I guess i'll try the Android discussion group.
Oh yeah, since ro.config.ringtone wasn't defined, it randomized that too. I got Ether Shake this time around. Default is, of course, Bird Loop.
Is there a way to get msn in adp1?
I would like to use the ADP1 version, because I only have the 400 texts/month package so I never used the built-in IM app for anything but GTalk... But manup456's and Stericson's themes don't support the ADP1 version yet so I'm stuck using RC30.

Not yet, the IM app may be open source, but the Yahoo, AIM and MSN plugins for it are not.
You can always install the BuddyMob app from the market, though...
was running adp1, find there is more functionality in rc30. but now that seems corrected with the new release.
went with rc30 for the additional space. why is the available space for the adp1 version 54 mb, but 71 for rc30? what is taking up the missing space in the adp1 version?
ADP1 for me, I don't need myfaves, is there an easy way to remove amazon mp3 and voice dialer from 1.3 like the original adp image?
Sadly my vote is for RC30 right now.
Make sure that the t-mobile hotspot access will work on the adp1 and give me the option for myfavs, and I'll switch.
I like the adp1 because it doesn't have myfaves but I ran into an issue were it wouldn't let me flash a new theme. It boots up and get stuck at an infinate loop at the android splash screen.
RC8 for me because of US number formatting. I suppose it's not a big deal if you would not support RC8 in the future, would just mean us UK folk would have to find a way to modify it.
Lov'n the ADP1 !!!!!!

Same here, no myfaves and "correct" number format. Would use Adp1 if number format was same as rc8
AP1 + IM with support for MSN accounts
I'd prefer RC30. I'd like to keep the official release for my phone, just with root access.
Yes, i have done a search but couldn't find the answer-
I don't actually have my G1 yet, but am doing planning before i get it.
Due to the myfaves apps sending out international smses (I am in Australia) I can't use modified RC30 image. I was planning on using the ADP1 JF version but just found the autorotate app by droidsans doesn't work on the APD1 version. I think the autorotate app is a fantastic idea.
Do i lose anything going with JF RC08 version instead of the ADP1? What exactly is the difference between the 2?
I don't plan on doing any developing myself but love to play with what other people have developed (I know no code).
thanks
Can the RC33 JF build see copy-protected apps in the market place? I *think* it can, but I'm not 100% sure...
If it can, has anybody given any thought to running RC33 JF to legally buy and install copy-protected apps, extract them (since it's still rooted) to the sdcard, reflash ADP1.1, and install the extracted apps? I'd hardly consider it piracy by any means since I'm paying for the apps, and it'd give me BetterCut, some of the games, etc, on an ADP1.1 build... I know they wouldn't get updates from the marketplace with out the process being repeated, but, an initial version just might be worth the hassle... especially since all of the good free apps seem to be converting to "lite" versions of their former selves, with the new "paid" versions being the only ones to retain all the features of the original...
Im not sure if what i think is true but i thought that the app were linked to your gmail account so that if you switch phones or firmware you should be able to still download the program but im not sure someone correct me if im wrong

No offense but, you shouldn't be asking this if you're using adp. You should already know how and I doubt anyone will post the directions since it can be used to pirate/steal apps.
yes that would work (i have tried it myself) but if you want protected apps that bad you should just switch to rc33 and stay with it. there arent any real advantages to adp
Are we talking about rooted RC33 or non-rooted RC33? I tried to flash my phone to rooted RC33 to see if I can buy protected apps but I didn't see any just like when I'm on ADP.

Can anyone confirm that as well? A lot of apps have disappeared for me with ADP1.1 and I'm considering redoing the phone to a rooted RC33. Is the rooted RC33 also detected and blocked from seeing these apps?

No but it does take time. I switched to RC33 for this reason alone and it took nearly a week for the Market to see I was no longer on ADP.

i thought the whole thing with the DevPhone release was an unlocked (root'd) version to develop apps etc .. so with JFs RC33 we HAVE the access to do anything we want and therefore do not really need ADP
it seems as tho for 98% of the population we don't have a real need for the DevPhone side of the G1
I never had paid-for-apps removed from my purchase ability when using ADP. *shrug*
So in a rooted 33, I could still see the same pay-for-use apps. With that being said...I don't know if there are any issues with paying for the apps, backing them up, and then using them on the same phone with ADP. You aren't stealing or sharing as you are still using it on the same ONE physical phone you purchased them on. Of course, do make sure there are no EULA/TOS agreements you have to "sign" or have "signed" stating that you will not do this...
i've put rc33 on my dev phone, and paid apps started showing immediately.
I have a rooted UK G1 with RC9 in Denmark. Had it for about a week now, no paid apps yet :-(

I *think* you need to be running both a non ADP image AND use a SIM card from one of the Android Market enabled countries (US/UK). RC33/RC9 won't be enough as long as your SIM is a Danish one.
I might be wrong, I hope I am, but unfortunately I think this is the way it is.

Does anyone not have a sim card - though in a market enabled country?
I've found the following in the source;
Code:
#
/**
#
* Indicates if Vending Machine requires a SIM to be in the phone to allow a purchase.
#
*
#
* true = SIM is required
#
* false = SIM is not required
#
*/
#
public static final String VENDING_REQUIRE_SIM_FOR_PURCHASE =
#
"vending_require_sim_for_purchase";
When I was skimming for some things and found out what database it was located it. If someone would like to try flipping the value from true to false and seeing if it works - I can send you directions.
For those who can still buy apps on ADP1 it's b/c those app aren't protected. You essentially have 4 types of apps:
Free - Protected
Free - Unprotected
Paid - Protected
Paid - Unprotected
ADP can't see anything that's PAID - Protected (not sure about Free - Protected).
For instance ADP can't see aHome (Paid for version) or any of the CapcomMobile games.
This is what I found anyway after moving to ADP today.
Thanks,
Derek

Hello Guys !!!!
I have The Magic Rom v 5.0.2H Installed Currently On my ADP1...
I AM IN INDIA
So As we know ADP1 Cannot See Paid Apps....
I Have The Quick Office apk installed Dont know which Version may be the one from Sapphire System Folder by Xmoo or From The Custom Build From Rild or someone with similar User Name Here (There Is A build on XDA)
Today while browsing on my ADP1, Got a Popup Saying Quick Office Update Is Available,
So I clicked on that Notification,
It Took Me to The Android Market,...To the Quick Office Paid App Costing $19~
Also Shows The Buy Option !!!
But When I checked Android Market Again, It Dint Show Any Paid App.... But opening Quick Office Sometime Shows Its App Download Window On The Market...
So I Think Even ADP1 OR Rooted Phones Can See Paid APP By Some Hack....
Please Post Your Ideas...

Ok, so you have the ADP1 phone, but are running an RC (read - NON-ADP) firmware. And what is shocking is that you think you still have an ADP1 phone. Sure the hardware is the same and you have that fancy back cover, but if the software says RC - that is the only thing the market can see. So that is how your phone is identified as an ADP or "Normal" phone.

His signature says he has this phone:
Phone : ADP1
Bootloader : Hard SPL
ROM : JF 1.43 ADP 1.1h
Yes kathi but what he's saying is, the OP is not running ADP firmware so the market has no idea what the back cover looks like or how much he paid for his phone.
As far as the market is concerned, he's running a standard T-Mobile G1 with RC33.
Kinda like if i boot my mac into Vista... I'm not going to get apple updates, i'm going to get windows updates... MS doesn't know (or care at least) that i'm on mac hardware. They just know I'm running windows.
Sorry Man You R Wrong,
If It was so that changing the firmware, would show paid apps,
Even Going to JF RC versions frim ADP versions would fetch me 1 or 2 paid apps...
Changing the firmware dosen't change the whole phone info...
The information Regarding Paid Apps Is stored on a lower level which dosen't change by a change in firmware...
What I Think Is May Be The Change in Radio Can Do This because The Radio Partition is not accessible via the UI
OR
Also The Bootloader Changes May Be Responsible This,
As Magic Rom Has An Option To Change The Radio & Bootloader ... These Require Recovery Mode to Be Flashed & Which Are Not Provided In The Source...
Haykuro,
First Off All, Thanks For Magic ROM,
Need To Ask U Some Questions:
1. Where Did The Radio & Bootloader Come From & Did You Did Any Changes To It ?
(May Be It Was Updated OTA I Know Bootloader Comes OTA)
Ok, well I just looked closer and I see that you are still running an ADP firmware, it's just a JF build.
I assure you though, when I put ADP firmware on my phone, I can't get protected apps.
When I put an RC firmware, I can.
The market blocks apps based soley on your firmware, not the bootloader or radio.
ADP = no protected apps
RC = no restrictions
As far as how you were able to see Quick Office, I have no idea. So on that note, I digress.

No Its Not ADP Firmware The Firmware Itself Means The Build
i.e. Firmware Means:
1.0, 1.1, 1.5,...
& Build Means:
ADP1, ADP1.1, JF ADP1, JF ADP1.1, RC, JF RC, haykuro 5.0.2H, haykuro 5.0.1G, ...
So Firmware & Build Dosent Matter...
Fair enough, you've got me on semantics.
Up until the 1.5 firmwares (Haykuro's builds) started hitting up the market, the standard restrictions were as I stated above.
At this time, as far as I know, nobody knows what's going on with the Market. Since Google released the 1.5 SDK, maybe they're now making changes to the market to either purposely block 1.5 firmware until they're ready or maybe the market is truly being upgraded to only supply the correct version of apps for the correct firmware.
Either way, I stand by my original comment that up until now, ADP builds were not able to see protected apps, while all RC derivatives were. Now that RC33 includes both 1.1 and 1.5 firmware, I guess all bets are off until somebody can verify what's actually going on.

Oh, you are right. I looked back and saw his signature. I should have read his post over again and seen that he was using Haykuro's build.
I'm slapping myself in the side of my head!
edit: I went from the same JF version Sangreet had to the same Haykuro version he has now, and can also see protected apps. It's because Haykuro added the code to make the market think we are on RC33. As of last night, the G builds couldn't download on the market, but the H builds could. (I just got on here a few minutes ago, so I don't know if this has changed).

i already read somewhere that they lifted the ban on paid apps partially .. something about paid apps that don't encrypt or something or other .. i don't recall the exact wording the press used but some apps have been made visible to ADP for at least a month or so
Hope that's true, and ado. Users see paid apps atleast on official ROMs
I recently got a G1 (USA, T-Mobile), and it's currently running RC33. I have spent many hours reading this thread about how to root Android and then load a rooted RC33 image:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
I'm well aware of all the advantages of rooting, but before I decide to take the plunge, I want to make sure that I also understand any disadvantages. Within that thread and others I've seen a few mentions of capabilities that don't currently carry over into the rooted RC33 image (the JF image), but unless I missed something, I couldn't find any discussion where all of these compromised capabilities are clearly enumerated.
Under the assumption that such a list doesn't exist, I'd like to start one here. I emphasize that I'm aware of the capabilites that are gained by rooting, and I'm wanting to know whether any of the following features might be missing or compromised under the JF RC33 rooted image:
Telephone-call features
Normal calling and receipt of calls
Voice dialing
Call forwarding
Other
Email sending and receiving
Contacts management
Synching
Notification features
Notification of incoming calls
Notification of incoming SMS/MMS
Notification of incoming email
Notification of alarms
Control of ringing/vibrating/silent notification capabilities for all apps
Camera
All normal features
Calendar
All normal features
Browsing
Normal browsing features
Networking
Edge
3G
WiFi
Multimedia
Playing/recording music
Playing videos
Viewing images
GPS
All normal GPS functions
Maps application
Other capabilities
Thank you very much in advance.
.
I don't think you loose any of this. Only chatting with MSN will be removed and some T-Mobile specific things like MyFaves. But you can do without that, i guess..
Thank you very much.
Actually, losing the capability to connect to MSN is a positive feature, as far as I'm concerned!
What about other IM providers?
Also, I'm a little unclear as to which G1 features are T-Mobile-specific. Besides Myfaves, are there any other things that are provided by T-Mobile that I might lose in a rooted RC33?
.

This is not correct. JF's RC33 image still has MSN chatting and MyFaves. It has everything the normal RC33 image has but adds root.
JF's ADP1.1 and ADP1.5 ROMs are another matter. Since those are based on the Android Developer Phone, which is not a T-mobile product, you lost T-mobile-specific apps like MSN chat and MyFaves.

Your question was about JF RC33, but if you're going to do it, I highly recommend you go with JF1.5 or one of the other Android 1.5 (Cupcake) based builds. They're much newer and have new features and bug fixes. If you go with one of those builds you WILL lose MSN chat, Yahoo chat, and Myfaves, but I don't miss them.
If you find it that ADP 1.5 or JF RC33 update is not good enough, you can always go back to the original RC29 and do it all over again.
Oh, OK. Now I understand. Thanks.
Another question: do I lose all IM capabilities in JF1.5, or just specifically MSN chat and Yahoo chat? I'd like to still use Google Talk.
Also, is Myfaves the only T-Mobile-specific app on the phone? I couldn't care less about it, but I'd hate to lose something else from T-Mobile which might be important.
.
You'll still have Google Talk. One T-mobile app not previously mentioned is Amazon Marketplace (for purchasing MP3s). You lose that also (I've never used it). That's all of them.
This is great! All the apps I'll lose are the ones I want to lose.
Thanks again.

Google talk is functional in all builds.
You will loose MyFaves app if you flash anything but R33. MyFaves are still manageble from T-mobile's website. I would agree with previous poster: only use R33 (root or no root)on T-mobile network or you may end up paying some hefty SMS charges as MyFaves app will try to contact servers once every 2-5 minutes.
Any 1.5 google builds (JF, Haykuro or Dude) are good choice, they are all stable, include Google Talk and no MyFaves (app that is). JF's rom has the more themes available at the moment but that will most likely change in few days.
Good Luck

Thanks again to all for your helpful and reassuring feedback.
Just want you all to know that I rooted my G1, and now it's working fine with the RC33 image ... and I'm very happy with the results!
I'll do the 1.5 installation some time in the future.
.
BTW... for 1.5 builds the built in camera app is MUCH better than in RC33. The shutter works a lot faster, like a whole lot faster. The camcorder is the bomb. The radio update really helped the connection speed of GPS... a lot. Finally the battery drains slower in the 1.5 builds. I noticed a significant difference when I went from RC33 to Dude's. The build is very stable and navigating around the phone works quicker. Why wait to flash 1.5?
i can agree with that!
i've flashed to JF's 1.5, battery drains slower, system and gps is faster....great build!
i love those widgets (weather, calendar and notices)
dont wait to flash to an 1.5 release.
greetz from germany
Actually, you only gain from rooting your phone, it's the build you install afterwards that effects what apps you may lose. It is definitely worth the loss of the Tmobile apps to get any of the 1.5 builds, though beware that many market apps are not yet configured to work with 1.5. This is not the build dev's fault, but the app dev's fault. Lately, more and more apps are becoming 1.5 friendly since the OTA is finally upon us.
