not sure if this is normal - G1 Android Development

not sure if anyone else is haveing this problem or if its just me but ever since i upgraded to to jf 1.5 alot of my apps and my sms keeps force closeing or freezing...and when ever i try to use droidsans tweak tools it says bad version now i under stand that some apps arnt gonna work simply cuz they are older apps and they would beed to be upgraded as well but the the native sms and "phone activity" whats the deal with that?
any help would be great and yes i did a wipe b4 upgradeing to jf 1.5

perhaps try wiping after you update.
all doing it before the update is wiping it to the current install, which after updating to a new one still leaves old parts around.

yea sorry had a brain fart i did wipe after i updated...my bad..

App versions reverting without notice. Could be a major bug.

Alright, this is a strange one. I'm wondering if anyone else can confirm this, although I bet few have probably noticed it.
I normally update my installed apps by going to the Market app and selecting "My Downloads." Often times I'll see "update available" and then I install the update, which wipes out the previous version.
Last week, I found an app called aTrackDog, which basically is a version tracker for your apps. It goes out and finds new versions and notifies you, so you can go download your updates. It not only follows the market, but also the app developer's homepage, in case they release their update through different mediums. I don't use it to install or uninstall, just track my versions.
This is when I started paying attention to the version numbers of a few apps. For this example, we'll talk about Advanced Task Manager and Pandora. I updated ATM from 3.5 to 3.6, and Pandora from 1.0.0 to 1.1.0. To do this, since the market didn't say there was an update, I uninstalled each app, and then reinstalled from the market. Everything was great, and each app showed its new version, from the splash screen on Pandora, to how ATM was listed in Task Panel, as version 3.6.
I just rebooted my phone because I was getting the 99% uptime thing, and wanted to mess around with killing the messages task to see if that made a difference. Much to my surprise, when my phone restarted, my phone has reverted many of my apps back to older versions.
My Advanced Task Manager now is back to version 3.5, Pandora is back to 1.0.0, and many other apps are affected.
This seems like a MAJOR BUG. Can anyone else confirm this at all?
To recreate this issue, if you have Pandora version 1.0.0 currently, or 1.1.0, uninstall and reinstall it. You then will have version 1.1.1 I believe. Then reboot your phone, and start Pandora back up. Does it still say 1.1.1?
I have found this also happens with Advanced Task Manager, and Mileage. I'm sure there's others, but those are a couple of examples. This has happened to me at least twice that I'm aware of.
EDIT-- Here's three links on other Android forums where someone else is experiencing this same thing.

I've noticed this too. I've really noticed it with NewsRob because it will pop up a message stating " A new version is available", but the Market knows what I downloaded last so it states that there is no update. I was wondering, since I too had Atrackdog installed (not anymore) if it was an issue with that program, maybe an issue with just what version was listed in certain programs (as in some piece of code to display the version number got messed up) or if there really was automatic downgrading going on...

I've tried to remove aTrackDog, and I'm still getting the same behavior. I really doubt that it has to do with that app, but rather the people that use that app are more aware of version numbers, and are the ones noticing it.
I'm assuming lots of people have Pandora on this board (or mileage, Advanced Task Manager or NewsRob for that matter) so we need more people to try to reproduce this issue!
What I'm trying now is to uninstall the app (in my case I'm using Pandora as it says the version number on launch) then reboot the phone, and then reinstall, use it to see the new version, and then reboot to see if it gets reverted.
What's the result? IT REVERTED AGAIN. This is definitely a bigger issue than we realize...but WE NEED PEOPLE TO REPRODUCE THIS.
EDIT:
I also emailed Pandora support to see if they can't reproduce the issue or help me figure out what's up.
I also emailed the devs for aTrackDog to see if they can't shed some light on what might be going on. Hopefully they'll be quick to help, so we can squash this biznatch.
I also posted a question in the App Market Google Forum, and hopefully someone at Google will help figure this out. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=56ff6f465d6e5e34&hl=en
I also reproduced this issue with TEN more apps:
Astro File Manager
Google Sky
Google Voice
Backgrounds
Barcode Scanner
Shop Savvy
Battery Widget
Daily Horoscope
Facebook
Movie Finder
Google, you got some 'splaining to do.
I use Astro to backup files to my SD card. After I reboot I go through all the "red" files (ones where the SD card version is newer than the installed version) and "upgrade" them with the SD card version.
Alas the Market app tends to "lose" the fact I downloaded some of these apps and no longer tracks them for updates
Something is definitely wrong somewhere.
I'm seeing the same issue, I even tried a factory reset and still happening.
You can add to the list:
Touchdown
Sipdroid
I think it is just about all apps. Even if you uninstall and reinstall the latest version seems to revert back to original version you installed for the first time.
Locale...
This happened to me this week with Locale. I had beta .68 and upgraded to beta .69.
A couple of days later, I noticed I was still running beta .68. I thought maybe they had forgotten to update the name in the app itself, but after seeing this thread, I'm betting it's an HTC Sprint Hero bug.
I also re-visited the Android Market to see if I could re-download beta .69, but it didn't recognize that the program could be updated. It must think I'm running beta .69, but I'm pretty sure I'm still rocking beta .68.
Verrrrry strange...
I just reproduced this as well, with AK Notepad.
I had 1.9.3b installed; upgraded to 1.9.4. rebooted; now it shows 1.9.3b again
I'm using modaco's rom with apps2sd setup. Is this happening on stock heros too?
edit:
From what I've been able to gather from Handcent SMS's version changelog and look for in the actual application I have on my phone, it appears that it is only the display of the version that is reverting, not the application itself. I have this issue with Handcent and even the "about" dialog inside the application reports the older version, but I am seeing features and changes that only appear in later versions according to the changelog. We'd need a major update of an application to test this further.
edit2:
grinched from #android on EFNet helped test this on a stock CDMA Hero and was able to replicate it with Barcode Scanner.

I'm going to root my Hero and give this a shot tonight. A HUGE preemptive THANK YOU!!!!!
This has been driving me nuts!!!
Nathan, you might want to try this one too (maybe first)?

Basically the same thing, but you delete the entire cache directory instead of just the broken ones one at a time. The cache is recreated after you reboot.

[Q] Where did my other purchases go?

So this AM I had my tablet fairly set up the way i like it. Had Ztab on it, installed the market fix, worked great!
Decided to partition the SD card cause i had some issues with a few FC's i thought might be fixable - so i backed up the SD card and partitioned.
i didnt notice that it said DATA and partition. DOH!
so now i had a nice "fresh" copy of ztab
but I only had 4 items in my market. So after some wrangling i decided to try vegan before re-installing all of my stuff again
So I install that, run through the market fix and now im up to about 8. but im still unable to find weatherbug and fancy widgets...couple other im sure.
do i need to wipe it and start over? I thought that installing a new rom would do that, but market was in the same place i left it on the home screen from ztab when vegan booted.
For some reason it takes running the market fix more than once sometimes. I installed a fresh copy of vegan today and did the fix once and got all my apps. It took me 3 times running the fix 2 days ago to get launcher pro
Yes -- I had to do the Market Fix 3 times as well before I found **most** of what I was looking for...
I think -- for some reason -- it's important to try to start the Market after force stopping the services...It seems to need to "see" the error before it works...
I still haven't been able to find everything (some EA Mobile games are listed, some are not) -- so I'd like to play with the Fingerprint ID but I can't seem to get it to work (yet)
Need to look into it some more...would be nice to have an app to "trick" the Market into thinking it was another device -- then make it easy to switch back later...

[Q] x10i CM7 RC2 012 WLOD

I've loaded the new CM7 RC2 versions from 009 to 011.
The WLOD accurs when launching stock browser or facebook and some games.
What I've done is to go to Cyanogen Settings and to Performance.
I ticked the Set on boot checkbox and changed to Battery saver.. since then haven't had any WLOD on stock browser or facebook for android.
Guess this is OC related.
Although when I restart my phone it gives a "force close " error on Cyanogenmod Settings and changes my govenerback to on demand the WLOD is still not accuring.
Is the WLOD issue resolved in 012 or am I just lucky for now.
Also hope this works for more people or the Devs . Sorry but I can't post on the Devs Threads.....
I've tried everything... no WLOD on the 2 mentioned apps anymore. Don't know what fixed it , but it only stopped after as mentioned above
i would try this but im on the 12 rom. Are you suggesting that going back to 11 and changing the settings, then reflashing and restoring data would work?
I won't suggest that... I went on to the new v012 and now WLOD on v012..
I Will go back to v011 and do the same changes to see what happens..
This was not meant as a solution to the problem just maybe for the DEVS to have a look.
Also on v011 I can play fruit slice but WLOD on v012.
EDIT: also i've noticed when playing 3D games White LED coming on and off but not killing phone and when on low power,, this WLOD issue might be the Mhz Difference and battery types in lots of different phones.
So one custom rom maybe doesn't support various types, hense forth people getting diiferent WLOD crashes
EDIT : Now the fruit slice game works... Haven't changed anything..
This WLOD's are really an extreme random thing, DEVS must have a really hard time.
I think most people don't flash their phone completely the right way maybe even me..
I've noticed that unless you do a complete format of the sd card and don't restore anything from a previous version there is always something
left on the phone and when downloading the same app it uses that data. hense WLOD's (maybe)
v012 Facebook and Browser working
Ex : I've Reflashed my phone cleared all the things off and when I reinstalled the fancy widget's app the downloaded skins were still their, I think lots of apps leave traces so even with the cleaning tools that exist you dont always get rid of everything and with a restore lots of people probably import the corrupted files.
CM 7 v012 is alot better than v011.. Thanks to the DEVS..
i've Had minor issues that somehow sort themselves with a reboot after first load of a app,,, nothing else serious as yet.
v012 Is The most stable Android 2.3.3 so far.
Thanx

What can Androidiani do for you or me?

So a fair amount of people are using Androidiani Open Recovery, myself included now, but I have a few questions about it. Namely what everything does. In the menu there are all sorts of things to do and use, but I am not sure what they actually do. I know about memhack, kernal optimization and zipalign, but what about all the other Froyo mods and tweaks in there?
For some reason, I can't attach a screen shot to this, but some of them are Istall Mod -conservative/interactive, Memory manager, vm heap size,...
The most helpful feature of AOR is the possibility to check the sd card. No need to plug the card to the pc for checks.
I also use zipalign after restoring my apps in a new rom.
With the adblock script you can update the host file to prevents ads in apps or in browser.
So, the one thing about Androidiani is that it's developed by A853 users, so I've never touched the baseband utilities out of fear it will do something bad.
It's nice to have access to system apps to get rid of what I don't want (or pull out a system apk) after a new flash. I also keep a copy of the latest system apps as a theme so after a new flash I can just apply the "theme" & have all the current versions of Maps, Facebook, etc.
I've never tried the kernel optimization because I wasn't' sure if I should use the froyo or the eclair as we still have the eclair kernel.

I know better than that. Baseband messing is Badddd! I am more interested in the Memory tweaks and things like that.

I tried the one for Froyo and not sure if it worked or not but let's just say it didn't "screw" anything up (as far as I know). I did have to re-root though and re-allow all the superuser permissions and overclock again. But as far as performance, it didn't hinder anything and it might be a plecebo effect, but I feel it is somewhat more stable. Could be in my head though.
Mioze7Ae ~ This is one of those times I was talking about in the SUperoneclick question where I had to use Unversal Androot and it worked just fine.

They don't work, neither does that fix permissions stop force close just bricks the phone...
ZipAlign works fine though...

Fix permission will work if it was a permission problem.
Got a question about this. After a few weeks of flashing the special, Wanhu, CM6...I noticed that AOR wouldn't let me flash update.zips for some reason. Awhile ago, I had this problem and either 3rdstring or Mz advised me to reinstall AOR. I did and everything worked. Now that the the CM6 is out and primarily done through updated.zips, I found a problem again. When AOR installs, it loads up a bunch of pix that show up in my media gallery. If I leave them in there, I can use the update.zip just fine. If I delete these pix, then it creates the problem that will not let me use that function. I can probably put a .nomedia in there somewhere, but not sure where. Has anyone else had this problem. It is AOR 3.3 in case you are wondering.
I read through this thread a week back. Im now using Androidiani with stock CB 2.1 Could anyone please guide me to which optimizations to use with 2.1, how they work and what works on our XT720? I would really appretiate it thanks!

What I have used is the Zipalign, obviously the wipes and resets, the fix permissions works really well (especially when flashing in between ROMs), Mchlbenner uses the Overclock settings. Haven't used anything in the memory settings like VM heap or anything like that.
Probably the things I use the most are in the menu utilities and the SD and SD-ext scans to make sure card is working. I usually do this before I flash a ROM and then once after I boot up totally. Seems redundant but it has saved me a card before b/c of a bad partition.
Mioze added a script for link2sd/app2ext (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177020&page=61) sorry don't know how to put just a plain "here" and have the link embedded.
If you use any of the modding menus, use the Eclair one b/c it is based off the kernal version. I know that 3rdstring uses AOR quite often to apply apps and such. May want to ask him about setting that up.

No problem. I think it's time we start creating our own baseband files for XT720. I've been poking around inside the Androidiani ones. I think they're just updates that only mess with the /system partition, so maybe worst case your phone stops working with the network until you get the right baseband back in. I think I know where to extract files from the SBFs to create our own, so we should be able to start making some XT720 specific ones.

I think the hosts file in the adblock is way old by now. At least it seems I start to get ads every few weeks and have to install a new hosts file. I just hosed my phone so I can't check, but I think AdFree is the app I use for that.
I already made baseband update for our phone. I used one from androidian and replace our files with theirs.
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
I figured out the maps issue. Apparently the new version of google maps has 3D maps and wasn't avaibable in my country. I just used market enabler and downloaded it. Lol its stupid, I mean dont let someone update just because of country they live in? Ill wont have 3D at home, but I can use it if i travel abroad. Anyways!
I use adfree too but the recent update screwed everything up. I just revert to previous build using TB and it still works for me. If I can pull that one out ill pm you with it, since not thread relavent. Btw ads in Angry Birds are embedded in software, so adfree wont work for some reason. Check adfree's review in market and they tell you why.
Has anyone used the compress option when making a back up? It is there, but I wonder what it will do? Does it function properly? I seem to remember reading something about compressing ad back up and it get corrupted or something like that but I can't remember when or where I read it.
What functionality does the Compress back up do (and please do say something like "it makes it smaller")? Does it work?

Text-To-Speech

Apparently this feature is acting up on other devices but was wondering if anyone had this working on their G2x and if so how did you manage to get it working?

What sort of issues are you having, and what ROM are you using? I had some issues with bluetooth and tts with CM7. I've switched over to EB 2.3.3, and all is working well.
Make sure you have everything you need installed.
Go to settings/voice input & output/text-to-speech settings/
If "Install voice data" isn't grayed out, click on that...it will take you to the market to download the voice engine.
I haven't noticed any problems with my tts, running my current ROM, but I also don't use Pico. I use Svox. It cost around $2-3 for the voice download, but it's much nicer than Pico.
Good Luck.
I'm running stock GB 2.3.3
I was hoping it would read text as they came in similar to the new WP7 Mango update but apparently the framework doesn't support that yet.
It takes me to the market, i download the application but then it uninstalls itself and shows that i have never downloaded the application before. I might install Faux123 rom and see if i can get it to work.

What app are you trying to d/l? I've never really tested out text message readers. I know Handcent will read the text, but IDK if you can set it to read as they come in.
I did test out Vlingo way back, and I must say...it was pretty good. I just don't like that it requires data usage (I'm on a limited data plan). But, for reading texts, Vlingo was pretty awesome. It even understood things like LOL (rather than say L-O-L, it would read it as "laughing out loud"). It even translated WTF, which of course made me laugh like a 12yr old kid.
I'm not downloading any. I was hoping the stock messaging application would do this as i kind of like the layout but sucks as far as security is concerned but that is an android thing.
I'll give the Vlingo a try and see if it works.
Thanks for the help.
