question on rooting - G1 Android Development

hey guys im still a noob when it comes to all this stuff, but i plan on rooting my phone tonight and have a few question:
-if i root my phone and upgrade to JFv1.5 (cupcake),will i loose i loose all my contacts and apps?
-can i still get themse like ahome on jf v1.5?
-can i upgrade to an 8gb microsd anytime after i rooted my phone and updated it?
thanks i really appreciate it

As far as im aware yes to all of those, you should backup your contacts (if they aren't on your Google account) etc

-if i root my phone and upgrade to JFv1.5 (cupcake),will i loose i loose all my contacts and apps?

You will not lose these unless you have previously turned off your auto sync or have no idea what your email is. Tip if you don't know your email just go to your IM and it will be listed under Gtalk.
Apps: You will have to redownload from the Market under my downloads (you have to agree to the terms before you can view them), unless you back up the ones you can with a program like astro.
Im running an 8GB SDCARD no worries there in fact you can use up to a 16gb card
As for Ahome and stuff like that I dont use them but what i have read and seen just by doing a little searching here, they are still working on the 1.5 ROM.

thanks guys

[Q] Non-root options for a thorough backup.

So I'm regretting not rooting my phone sooner. HTC Evo, about 5 weeks old.
When I got it it came w/ 2.2 and was in the period when there was no root for 2.2.
I played around and got dependent on my phone but now I see that without root I don't have any real reliable [thorough] backup of my phone.
Or do I?
What options are there that will backup AND restore most if not all of my data to my phone if/when the sh!t hits the fan (or I decide to root one of these days).
I'd like a 1 step type solution - for those of you familiar w/ the Palm think Resco Backup. Full backup (w/ incrementals!) to SD card based on my defined schedule. I'm shocked and amazed (not to mention disgusted) that this doesn't exist on Android. I've searched the market ad-naseum (and here and Google) so either I've overlooked it or it's absent. If you know the way please share the wealth.
If I have to piecemeal solutions together then these are my specific concerns:
Calendar and Contacts - I think I'm OK here - using HTC Sync to Outlook on desktop. I should be ok with that right? else, what do you suggest?
SMS - I REALLY have to be able to restore this. I'm using Handcent if that helps any (dont' think so but..). This is a must.
Call Logs - Like SMS, absolutely must be able to backup and restore this.
Pictures, etc. taken with the phone
K9 mail and setings - I'm using IMAP so the mail is safe but I'd rather not reconfig 7 email accounts again. Actually cant something backup the prefs/settings for all my apps at once?
Apps - when I put my gmail user into [e.g] a new phone, does it just go to the market and redownload whatever apps I had? Not sure how this works so maybe it's not necessary to backup my apps themselves.
Any other personal/important data I'm not thinking about?
In the end I'd really like an absolute restore function that gets me back to how I was the moment the backup was taken. If I can't have that, what the closest I can get?
Thanks much for reading and any input you have.
It's much appreciated.
J.
Thread Bump
Please, any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks much all.
Mybackup pro on the market handles most of that without root. Sms, mms, bookmarks, system settings. After root it will back up apps and the market link too.

Need tmobile apps back!

Im trading in my phone and need all the tmobile apps back can someone please upload all the tmobile bloatware also the ea games app too! thanks
I'm assuming that you're rooted because you said delete not freeze. It probably would have been wise to do a Titanium Backup of all that Tmo crapware before deleting. That being said, there are stock images floating around in the developer section, and if you have CWM installed, a NANDroid as well.
ya but sadly i dont have a micro sd card! it hasnt come in the mail yet! can you do it just with the phone?
You don't need SD card to backup with titanium use internal 8gb
You could always get them back from the nandroid or stock image in Dev section

How would you go about extracting apps from a .img file?? My bad they are probably .zip right..
G2X
Can't you just download them from T-mobile?
http://android.t-mobile.com/android-apps
You need root to complete this.
- Download the system dump in the Developer section
- Unzip that zip or tar or whatever compressed archive it is
- Connect your phone via USB
- Copy the files you deleted (or all of /system/app/) to your phone's internal SD card
- Use a program such as Root Explorer to copy the files you deleted from your SD card to /system/app/
- If you want to be thorough, set the permissions of those copied files to match those of the existing ones
- Reboot
ALWAYS take a nandroid backup before you make changes.
Here's a zip file that contains all of the bloatware that I removed. Use Titanium Backup to restore these. I haven't tried restoring, but it should work.
It includes:
Wi-Fi Calling (com.android.kineto)
EA Launcher (com.ea.launcher.moregames)
NFS Shift (com.ea.nfsshift)
NOVA (com.gameloft.android.GAND.GloftNOHP)
Polaris (com.infraware.docMaster)
Logmein Rescue (com.logmein.rescue, com.logmein.rescuesecurity)
T-Mobile TV (com.mobitv.client.tmobiletvhd)
My Account (com.nuance.nmc.sihome)
TegraZone (com.nvidia.tegra)
Swype (com.swype.android.inputmethod)
Telenav (com.telenav.app.android.telenav)
T-Mobile Apppack (com.tmobile.apppack)
T-Mobile Device (com.tmobile.selfhelp)
Zinio (com.zinio.mobile.android)
EDIT: nevermind, my zip file was missing most these files.

Why do they even add this garbage in?
I doubt anyone would care if the **** is gone, even a T-Mobile store.

able to sell phone for a "cheaper" price
This is one of the least bloated phones available, period. In fact, the Nexus S is probably the only phone available new which has less.
Some of this stuff is useful.
Not all of this should be considered bloatware. Some of it can be useful. I actually had T-Mobile My Account installed on my Nexus One from the Market and use it often to check my bill. Two free games I don't consider bloatware. I enjoy NFS Shift and not sure why you consider a free game bloatware. The only apps on here I think is complete bloatware and not useful to some is TeleNav since everyone has a better navigation for free already and T-Mobile App Pack, which is just to buy stuff at ridiculous prices from T-Mobile. Other than that, I will probably keep most of the preinstalled apps and even backup the APKs for later install on CM.
I consider it all bloat, but that's just a personal opinion. If I want it I'll download it myself. Also the fact that it doesn't let you remove the bloat (unless you root) is most irritating, otherwise nobody would really care.
I got rid of all of this, it's all bloat I don't want locked into my phone:
EA Launcher (com.ea.launcher.moregames)
NFS Shift (com.ea.nfsshift)
NOVA (com.gameloft.android.GAND.GloftNOHP)
Polaris (com.infraware.docMaster)
Logmein Rescue (com.logmein.rescue, com.logmein.rescuesecurity)
T-Mobile TV (com.mobitv.client.tmobiletvhd)

That is true for many of the apps, but they aren't all available on the market. I am all for removing ones you don't want, but I don't think it will matter for the average user. If they don't want them, they just don't open them. I have no problem with T-Mobile including apps they find useful personally. Ideally they would be uninstallable, but then some users would uninstall and not be able to reinstall and get angry. Take a look at a stock Verizon Android phone and you will be impressed with the G2x by comparison.
Stock nandroid works
I just used the stock nandroid from developers section to restore my apps. everything looks good so far.

I was a little worried about it because i only have windows 7 64 bit and i read a couple posts that said it was iffy. Even so the guide worked like a charm.
I did read that i would need nvflash for a permanent solution as rom manager is a fakeflash.

For me, I just want to be able to control what I have on my phone. It's irritating that one has to go to such lengths to remove applications that one does not desire, but if T-Mobile had made them uninstallable and re-installable like any other app, this wouldn't be a problem. That being said, Wi-Fi calling is infinitely useful, but I deleted it along with everything else when I was testing possible battery drain fixes. I would have done a TiBu, but I'm learning along the way.

[GUIDE]Installing market on Entourage eDGe

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way responsible if any of this information destroys or has any negative effects whatsoever.
UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS DOES NOT IN FACT ENABLE MARKET USE, HOWEVER, IT DOES STILL WORK WITH GMAIL, CALENDER, ETC. AND I'M LEAVING IT UP IN CASE ANYONE WANTS TO GIVE IT A SHOT.
That said, this has worked for a few people so far without any problems, if you run into any I'll do what I can to help.
HUGE THANKS TO: brianb5010(this guide is almost word for word the same as his), kennyminot(helped in much the same way as brianb5010), and Keslynn. Without them this project would be nowhere right now.
Now, on to the guide:
Step one: Download the backup of the gapps from my site: link(please note, the link has been updated to go through adfly, 5 seconds of your time will help my continued development on this device, if you really don't want to use it, PM me and I can send you a direct link. If adfly leads you to a survey, back out and don't do anything there, these kinds of things are against the adfly TOS and they are working to remove them, thanks!)
Step two: root your edge, the easiest way is to download the z4root app from the Amazon marketplace, NOTE: this only works if using 2.2/ermine, if you are running an older version you will have to figure out how to root on your own(there are a few methods, and various guides for this out there).
Step three: Download Titanium Backup(the free version should work fine for this, but I recommend buying anyway, its a great app!) from the developers site onto your edge and install: link.
Step four: Extract the archive somewhere on your computer or eDGe, then copy all of the files found in the release folder(extracted from the archive) to your /sdcard/TitaniumBackup folder
Step five: Open Titanium Backup and wait for it to gain root, etc.(make sure to give it root privileges), then tap on backup/restore, scroll to the bottom of this list and you should see several (9) apps crossed out, tap on each and tap restore app + data. THIS IS IMPORTANT, you MUST restore the DATA!
Step six: You should be DONE!!! reboot and try out market, you'll need to sign in with your google account.
If you get an error go to step seven:
Step seven: At this point you may be able to access the market, but you might also need to do the "market fix", to do this you will need to edit the /system/build.prop file. Instructions can be found here, but if you want to do it the free way(a little harder), read on:
a. Download AndRootFile and use it to remount the /system folder as read/write, then open up a terminal
b. type "su"(without quotes) then type "vi /system/build.prop"(again without quotes)
c. use ijkl or the trackpad to navigate down to the line starting with: "ro.build.fingerprint"
d. change(use the i button on the keyboard to start editing in vi) that line to read: "ro.build.fingerprint=google/passion/passion/mahimahi:2.2/FRF91/43546:user/release-keys"
FAQ:
Q: I'm not seeing many apps in the market.
A: see this: youtube video
Q: I'm getting a download error on every app I try to download, and a google talk connection error.
A: Please PM me and/or post here and I can try and figure it out, I had this error as well, and it may just be due to a faulty gmail account, but there may be another problem, either way I can likely fix it.
Question not answered? Post below or PM me! Also let me know of any spelling errors or things I missed, I know there must be some!

Yes, the program works.
The problem I ran into had something to do with my normal gmail account, it wouldn't allow me to download anything from market or access google talk(gmail and youtube worked fine). So I reinstalled them and used the fake/throwaway gmail account I made just for these backups, unfortunately, I have not yet done enough testing to know whether or not the programs will work with any other google account. If this is the case I will release the username and password of the fake account so that others may use it to access the market(you can then add another account to sync with gmail, etc.) Unfortunately, the talk app does not yet let you switch which account you use it with, so you would have to seek out another IM app.
Of course until someone else tests this I don't know anything for certain.
EDIT: if anyone has been successful in this please let me know. One user is having problems with it on another board and I want to know if it is an isolated incident.
COPYPASTA FROM OTHER THREADS:
yes, I know what the problem is(I really should have tested more, I just got a little giddy and wanted to release lol), I'll hopefully have a new set of back-ups out tonight or early tomorrow(EST), until then you can still have fun with gmail, etc. and if you want you can try to get it working with market using the current set of backups.
If anyone REALLY wants to get on market before I release the newer backups PM me and I'll give you the username and password of the account that will work with the market, you will have to restore all the apps again(maybe not all but it can't hurt...) and then sign in with this user FIRST, then whatever other users second. Also, this will just fix market, talk will only work with this throwaway account, and you could add people but know that everyone using it will see them. Also know that this account will be public and should anyone start screwing with it I will delete it!
I'd rather no one make any purchases with this account anyway, as that could reveal your credit card and other details, but for free apps it should be fine.

If you want you can still download the backups from here: link, note that it will only work with gmail, calender, etc. and not talk or market, unless you PM me in which case I can give you the account that will activate market but only use it for free stuff because it will be a public account(talk will be similar in that everyone will see anyone you add). If your still interested PM me.

Thank you, but I think I'll wait. No sense in risk unnecessary work later. Talk and Market are the only things that I couldn't get working without the backups, so it's probably best to wait for backups that will work nicely with them.
I'll just keep an eye on the site, and thank you VERY much.

Yeah, unfortunately it looks like it might be tomorrow when they come out, the way I have to do this requires internet access, and my backing up of the official forums is taking up a lot of my bandwidth, not to mention I'm getting quite tired myself.
Sorry everyone, but I've got to be heading off to bed now, I'll release the newer backups ASAP tomorrow, until then I hope you all enjoy gmail, etc.
Again, sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully I can have this all sorted by tomorrow.
Oh and really sorry if you missed the PM time, I wish I could have kept it open longer, but I really do need some sleep right now
Thanks a lot emusan - been toying with the backups from earlier today and kept getting the market download/talk error as well (tried a new account, reset data, etc.) - looking forward to the new backups!

illegitimi non carborundum
I'm sorry to have to say this, but it seems as though the newer backups are not going to work(in fact they seem to work less well). I hate to say it but I can't really promise that I can get market working anytime in the near future(or possibly even at all). I'll put back up the older backups so that you can at least use gmail, calender, etc. but unfortunately talk and market will not work for the foreseeable future.
I'm still going to keep trying(though I really can't spend as much time as I have been on this, sadly), but at this point anything I try short of writing a custom ROM will just be a shot in the dark. I'm currently in talks with a few developers who have managed to get market working on other devices, though it seems to require a custom ROM. I might try making one in the near future, but I've never really made an android one before, and given some of the quirks of the eDGe I'm not even sure its possible(at least not without losing reader capabilities ).
If anyone else wants to try and get market working themselves I'll try and help in any way I can.
Thanks to every member of the community for their support over the last few days, again I'm sorry to disappoint.
On the bright side, the newer official forum backup seems to be grabbing a lot more pages than last time(unfortunately this time it is MUCH larger, I'll make it viewable online without needing to download, but this means I'll have to wait for an upgrade of the storage on my server), and should hopefully be done within the next 24 hours.

lol had to look that up, thanks.
Well, that's a disappointment to hear, but I can't say I'm shocked. The phone my fiance really wants got released as an ATT exclusive and we don't do business with ATT, so we may end up with an android phone in the house before too long anyway.
Of course, if you have a eureka moment, I'd love to know.
In any case, I appreciate the effort.

yes, though others have done similar with no problems like that... The main problem arises from the need to use the same google account with the backups and restored applications...
Thank you emusan! I just installed the gapps with your instructions and everything works, except for marketplace.
All I really wanted was to get calendar and my contacts sync'ed. This in itself makes the PE worth alot more to me than $125 I paid for the PE.
I tried the marketplace and I got "No android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account."
Will the trick with the build.prop fix this or are we stuck?
Anyways, will the sync'ing of the calendar appear in the PE calendar? I was looking for google calendar app, but I don't see one.
Anyways, thank you emusan and everyone else that contributed to make the PE worth more than I could have imagined.

Unfortunately, it would seem as though we are stuck in terms of market and talk access for the time being. The PE calender app is just a modified version of the normal google one I think, I haven't tested it to see how well it works with this method of installing the google apps, but we will see...
I love the new market app on my dx
Thanks
Wow, this is great ill really like to make to make it work at least to download free apps
I was able to get Market and Gmail to work with a different method:
1) Copy Google Services Framework (2.2.1) and Gmail (2.3.5) from my phone (HTC Aria running FR008). Just the .apks, not the data! I used Astro or ES File explorer to back them up.
2) Install Framework, then Gmail.
3) Install new Market (version 3.0.27) from a friend.
4) Use Titanium Backup (paid version) to convert the Market app to a system app.
5) Open up Gmail, login with my account. Then everything works!
I had to edit my build.prop(as described in emusan's OP), THEN use the hack described by the video. Now I can see all my purchased apps as well as the rest of the ones I want.
Thanks for this!

[Q] Factory Data Reset after Root

Hello everyone. Please let me pre-apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong forum. I have spent much, much time reading similar posts on this question, and I am a newbie, but very quickly learning.
I'm only asking this just to be absolutely safe before I do it. -I am very New to android phones and have managed to Root my phone 1st try and have no issues, everything is fine, and I love the phone and this site.
=-QUESTION-=
I want to do a Factory Data Reset (settings/privacy/Factory Data Reset), and the phone is rooted (used KMS One click Root)
1.Is it safe to do this.
2.Should I do anything before I attempt it.
3.Should I expect the phone to be back to it's "factory" state afterwards.
xtra info:
I base my questions off of what I have already read/learned, I have a bunch of programs I installed for testing purposes (1st time android user & all free versions), now that I know what I want installed, I want the phone to start Fresh (I just like the way it runs after a factory reset) and after that, I am going to buy$ all the programs, which are mostly utility programs from the android market.
I already bought App2SD Pro, and want to buy many, many more. I have installed on my pc Eclipse and the full Android-sdk-Tools. Although I am not a Programmer, my intentions is to become one, if I can learn it all .....lol
There are no Mods or anything like that installed and nothing was removed by me. (system apps, etc.)
Bottom Line: - As a "Newbie", as You call it, I don't yet know enough to remedy any serious problem if one was to happen after doing this, the "factory reset after rooted already", So I want to be sure before I attempt anything. So I came here to ask the opinion of the experts, you.
...and on a last and somewhat unrelated issue, after rooting the phone using the KMS thing, I don't even know what it installed or what it did'nt at the time of rooting, and I state this out of confusion due to part of the Readme file stating afterwards on your phone goto the android market and download busybox - but it seems it was installed by the rooter (as far as I could tell) and Superuser.apk as well, since it was there after rooting. -But I know nothing of what these apps do, still trying to understand them.
...So this is where I'm at educationally with my phone, and ALL Respect to all of you.
Thanks for Reading.
My PHONE:
Samsung Galaxy Prevail
Model# SPH-M820-BST
Android Version 2.2.2
Build# FROYO.EE14
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Hardware version: M820.07
current added software:
ATK, App2SDPro, Astro, CacheMate for Root, DroidWall, ES File Explorer, LCDDensity, OperaMini, PdaNet, QuickBoot, RomManager, RootCheck, SD-Booster, SpareParts+, SuperManager, SuperUser, Titanium Backup.
(These are the utility programs I mentioned above), I currently only purchased the full version of App2SDPro, and want to purchase/reinstall all the rest at their paid full versions, but only after the factory reset is completed.
Also, after the phone was rooted, I tried to uninstall Superuser (I was trying to update it at the time) and from what I remember, it would not un-install, and still won't. (possibly some need to know xtra info for you)
I use XP-Pro/sp3, tweaked by me, and I am pretty familiar with it, but Linux is new to me, and I am just getting started on learning/using that in Oracle VM VirtualBox for educational reasons for now.
-THANKYOU, Again.-
I'm guessing this question is not interesting enough for an answer.
A factory reset should reset your phone to how it was when you got it. You will lose your apps, but any purchased apps will be remembered so you don't have to worry about that. Superuser is essential on a rooted device to grant apps SU permissions, so don't try to remove it.
k_nivesout thankyou. I have been sitting idle waiting to find out what to do, now at least I understand what Superuser is for and how important it is. -I understand what a Factory-Reset will do, as I have done it a few times already messin' around with it since I bought the phone 2 months ago., ..but.,...
You Stated:

Click to collapse
You mean I will lose the apps I installed myself, not the system pre-installed stuff (i think you guys call it bloatware) CORRECT?
AND
How will the system remember that I bought an App such as the one I did buy, App 2 SD Pro, I ask because I want to know if it's stored on the phone somewhere (meaning it's not a total reset/wipeout --my thinking is still in windows mode) or on the 16GB memory card I have in there, because I was planning on wiping that to start fresh as well, or does the market read/remember my phone id/login email, etc. when I connect and try to redownload/re-install it. ?
-In fact I would like to know that anyway for future reference before I start laying money down on lots of apps I want.
Hope you understand what I'm asking here.
ThanKyou.
Yes, you'll lose the market apps with the factory reset, but your paid apps are tied to your Google account. So whenever you set up the phone again with that account, it will associate those apps, even on a new phone.
I can't remember if its just on gingerbread roms, but the last few times I've done a factory reset, Google has remembered my free apps too, and started redownloading them automatically from the market.
I'm no expert. but here's what I have experience.
If you'll do a factory reset. All will be gone, your settings, apps etc but you the phone will retain its root.
Cool.
I got what I needed to know. Just wanted to go with the experience of others before I do anything involving systemwide things, don't want to wind up with a dead phone that will take weeks of trial and error to fix, especially as I'm new to the whole android thing/programming/linux, and also 'cause boost's customer service is chock full of lazy "I hate my job and don't want to be here" type tech support.
This is all I can afford at the moment and it is fine, and I'm glad I'm able to make it better and mess around and learn from using it. And this site too of course.
Thanks guys

[Q] Noob Here. Will Paypal $20 For Help Getting Started Before 11AM CST

I bought a Samsung Infuse 4G from Wal-Mart a couple weeks ago. There's an annoying Facebook pop-up that keeps coming up asking me to accept their terms of agreement but I do not use any Facebook apps. I went into manage applications and saw a facebook app that I did not uninstall. The only extra apps I have installed on my phone were skype, tango, vibrer and two voice recording apps that sucked so bad I uninstalled them.
I am not new to any kind of coding, just new to android. I am on a limited time schedule because I have work at noon and it's already 9:28AM. I would like to get my phone rooted before I start that's why I'm offering to paypal for help since I won't be able to read all these guides in time. I am using a Windows 7 64-Bit PC. From what short research I was able to do, I have come to this conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28002718&postcount=8
^^^That's what I think I should do, but I'm not sure.
Option C looks cool but it looks like I might lose my contacts.
My objectives before I go to work.
1. Root phone so I can uninstall that annoying app.
2. Keep my contacts. I don't want to lose them.
3. Be able to use my phone's tethering ability without having to pay AT&T extra for that.
4. Improve battery-life and performance.
5. Be able to use custom apps or modified apps of existing apps...

Keep your $$$, it would be a great learning experiance for you XDA is not about making $$$ or looking for a fast fix.... is for someone who wants to learn and make their growth in the learning process....but it may take more time...
> if you want to keep your contacts you can export them to your sd card, options within the contacts. but google keeps them on the sync when you log into google it will populate your contacts to your phone automaticaly.
1. Root phone so I can uninstall that annoying app.

2. Keep my contacts. I don't want to lose them.

3. Be able to use my phone's tethering ability without having to pay AT&T extra for that.
I dont use this so no anwser for you...
4. Improve battery-life and performance.
keeping it stock but go with a load that is Rooted, Deodexed, Busybox, Zipaligned. Or load a custom ROM, see my signature for the ISET page for that listing.

All you need for the Infuse:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610374
5. Be able to use custom apps or modified apps of existing apps.
Need root for this, not all require to be rooted but it helps. Again you can load with one click and put CWM then load a custom ROM.

Also again all the Roms:

Like I started out XDA is about learning not for the quick fix, and being new give yourself time to accomplish what you want to...and no $$ is asked from anyone that worth their weight. But as you see fit you can donate to anyone. But as I said keep your $$ learn.
Here is some good reading:

Just wanted to let you know I chose option c

Everything works fine and I'm not interested in doing anything more to it.
All the roms I saw had some kind of drawback or something was not working right from what I read. It's a shame too cause I wanted to try out Ice Cream Sandwhich.
Oh yeah Shelley from www.bbsmiley.com hooked me up with a list of some cool apps: https://plus.google.com/102677509828572193138/posts/NFhjkRV3VoU
I haven't actually seen a list of good apps on here yet. I just gotta search the forum's harder.
