It seems that the IPhone has surpassed WM on one of my favourite functions in a smartphone; offline Wikipedia browsing.
There used to be a good tool: Tomeraider, which originally allowed for a searchable database including images. However since the size of Wikipedia has grown above 4GB, the format can no longer support all articles and now the latest db is without images and roughly a year old out of date.
I have tried out Mobipocket, which can handle larger files, albeit split into smaller chunks but am disappointed with the app on touch phones and the fact it does not support images.
The IPhone has the wiki2touch app which appears to be a webserver that connects to a local database that can be downloaded from wikimedia and is updated regularly, it looks to be exactly what one would want.
My question is this; would it be possible to run something similar on Windows Mobile with a ppc equivalent of SQLite and Apache?
You can use MDict with this Sep 2008 database.
Or use Pocket Wikipedia, which has an included (and not up-to-date) database.

first of all as it is offline you don't have to pay data download fee. but more importantly while reading something you may come across a concept or a name even a brand name , you select the wiki version and walla, you understand what that particular word is. i use mobireader for news feed, last week while reading an article i came across with the term "bubble car".i found its meaning in offline wiki. the other day, i was reading the new regulation about swimming suit for competition i could easily reach the info about speedo, micheal pelps using wiki. the easy and user friendly dictionary program is another story. and offcourse all of them freeware.

In my well-known article The definitive guide to downloading files, images and saving Web pages with Pocket PC-based Web Browsers (from now on: Download Bible), I’ve already elaborated on WinMobile Download Accelerator (WMDA), the, up to now, only reliable multithreaded downloader tool for the Windows Mobile platform, along with all the (non- multithreaded) tools and Web browsers.
Now, a brand new, excellent download utility, HandyGet has been released. I’ve, certainly, given it a test ride at once to see whether it’s any good.
(Please PLEASE read the Download Bible before going on because, in order to be as terse and up-to-the-point as possible, I won’t elaborate in here in which cases self-standing download tools can be useful, how they can speed up the transfer and what their problems can be. That is, if you don’t know the tests / terminology I’ve introduced in the Download Bible, you won’t likely understand this article.)

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Availability
It’ll become available here (it’s not there yet – the program is so new). The 30-day unrestricted trial, however, is already available here. As the main Handango page is still not accessible (and there are no other sources of the program), I don’t know about the price.
Usage
By default, it doesn’t monitor Internet Explorer downloads; this must be explicitly enabled (General / IE Monitor).
After this, it’ll intercept download requests and display the download config screen as can be seen in here (the bottom of the dialog is here) and will start downloading at once.
It, unlike WMDA, also has a log dialog, which shows the HTTP request / response headers sent (screenshot 1 (showing the request) 2 and 3 (with the response)).
It, as with WMDA, is able to resume downloads and remember the download list through restarts.
Speed tests
As can clearly be seen, HandyGet excels at both the “slow-source” and the “fast-source” downloads (compare these figures to the ones in the WDMA section of the Download Bible!). The former are downloaded even faster than with WMDA and the latter only exhibit little speed hit (which is diametrically opposed to the WMDA case.)
text/plain files
(Please see section 3.1. „Content-Type"-related problems (AKA "When I click a CAB link, it's not downloaded but shown!") in the original Download Bible for more generic, not HandyGet-related information on this question!)
Of course, as the built-in Internet Explorer tries to render files like these, the execution isn’t passed to HandyGet when downloading text/plain files. In these cases, of course, you can just enter / paste the URL of the resource you’d like to save to HandyGet. An example of this can be seen here, where I’ve entered the text/plain http://www.octopus-studio.com/ETDict.mdx URL directly into the program.
Note that as with both the other download managers, it automatically copies the URL from the clipboard to the URL field. That is, if you have a link copy-capable, say, PIE plug-in, you can easily download the file even if it’s a text/plain file or you don’t allow for IEM integration.
Summary
Compared to WMDA…
Pros
Doesn’t use the main storage at all when downloading to cards; it seems to use an in-memory buffer (it doesn’t use any kind of temporary directory when downloading – only uses about 200 kbyte dynamic RAM for some buffering)
Much less speed hit than with WMDA with fast sources – there is no need to disable it at all if you download from fast sources
I haven’t encountered problems like WMDA’s “a 0 byte is added to the file” when downloaded
Allows for simultaneous downloads (this must, however, be explicitly enabled; then, you can download up to four files at the same time. Other download tasks as can also be seen in here will be paused until one of the current download is finished. It should also be pointed out that, with slow sources (see the WDMA section in the Download Bible for examples!), if you plan to download more than one file, you should enable multiple downloads – individual downloads won’t be slowed down because of this. Kudos to the developer!
Cons
Doesn’t make it possible to supply the referrer. This will cause problems with sites like Caiman (please see section 3.3. (Referrers passed to download? The Caiman problem) for more info in the Download Bible)
Verdict
Give it a try – it’s certainly better than WinMobile Download Accelerator in most respects (except for the Referer support)!

Thoughts
Detailed info
just when i thought this app would be useful to install all of my favorite apps after a clean flash i was wrong.. or well it might do that, but the unlimited trial only allows for 1 cab to be placed in there, and what good is that when i can just store that 1 cab on my storage card... would be great if the trial would let you do more than 1 cab.. maybe something like 5-10.. and at a price of 45euro or $60usd its not worth it just to see if it may or may not work with multiple cabs..
"AirWizard 1.1 has been released with some important fixes and improvments:
Fixed Single/Multiple cabinet selection from Browse dialog
Fixed Cabinet header parsing - eg. NET CF 2 2003 has a different info ( CE4+)
Fixed Shortcut Creation/Cabinet file name, now the paths can contain spaces in their names
Visual update when cabinet file is unpacked to notify the user on the status
User cannot exit the installer when/while cabinet files are unpacked/installed by pressing "Finish" menu button

how does this work?
If you have a QVGA Smartphone like the HTC Vox / s710, you know well enough that most existing games and other graphics-based Smartphone apps (Windows Mobile 6 Standard) out there only use a postage-stamp sized screen area. An example of this is PDAMill’s Flux Challenge, which, being designed for the traditional low-res (176*220) Smartphone resolution, only uses part of the available QVGA screen estate:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

}
There were no widely known solutions for the problem. Some developers announced support for QVGA devices (for example, that of Cell Doom – see announcement HERE), but the most (including PDAMill) didn’t.
Fortunately, an excellent White Russian coder has come up with a generic solution, which not only makes it possible to run MANY (but not all!) games at full screen, but, in cases, also lets for using real (!) QVGA resolution with some titles (for example, emulators).
Downloading, installing
Go to this MoDaCo thread and download the ZIP file attached to the first post. You’ll need to register as a forum user if you aren’t able to access it. If you don’t want to bother with it, I’ve also uploaded the file to my database back-end; it’s HERE.
After this, just unZIP it and start GxQvga Patcher.exe. Should you encounter an error message complaining about the lack of the .NET Framework 2, you will need to download it HERE (note that some stated it only requires 1.1. I haven’t checked whether they’re right. The latter is accessible HERE.)
Using
This patcher app runs on the desktop, NOT on the Smartphone. This means you must transfer the main EXE file of the game / emulator / app you’d like to make use of the QVGA screen to your desktop computer first. To do this, use for example Total Commander with the CE file system patch (see THIS for an explanation of installing it) or, if you don’t want to bother, just the “Explore” button of ActiveSync.
Transfer the main EXE files (but nothing else) of the apps / games you’d like to patch to the directory of where the above-mentioned, just decompressed GxQvga Patcher.exe resides.
Now, start GxQvga Patcher.exe. It will present you a dialog:
In there, click “Select exe file to patch...". Now, select the EXE file you’d like to patch:
After letting it go on, you’ll be presented a message telling you the patching was successful:
Now, all you need to do is:
Copy the patched EXE file back to your MS Smartphone, making sure you overwrite the original EXE file
Go to the QVGA subdirectory on your desktop (just under the directory where GxQvga Patcher.exe resides), and copy XG.dll to the same directory on your smartphone
Start the game / app to see whether it worked; answer Yes to the message.
If the game / app still only uses 176*220 (and not the full screen), exit it and go to the SCALE (NOT the previous QVGA!) subdirectory on your desktop, and copy XG.dll to the same directory on your smartphone and copy XG.dll to the smartphone, making sure you overwrite the previously copied QVGA XG.dll. Now, start the game on your Smartphone. Hope it’ll use the full screen. If it still doesn’t do this, then, nothing can help, I’m afraid.
Examples of the before-after cases
PocketHobbitSP2003 (as of the current, Alpha 11 version) doesn’t support QVGA devices. As can be seen in the following screenshot, without patching, it only uses a stamp-size screen area in Portrait mode on QVGA devices:
http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007C64Emus/c64EmuDefaultStamp.bmp.png
After the patch and using the QVGA DLL, it becomes much bigger and, what is even more important, makes use of the full horizontal screen reoslution – that is, 240 pixels, resulting in MUCH more readable text:
http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007C64Emus/PatchedSEQVGAP.bmp.png
Incidentally, with the SCALE DLL, it also fills in the entire screen horizontally, BUT only upscaling the original, 176*132 rendition resulting in a MUCH inferiour real resolution & readability:
http://www.winmobiletech.com/062007C64Emus/PatchedSPVersionScaleDLLQVGAPortrait.bmp.png
This is why I’ve emphasized you MUST give a try to the QVGA DLL first and only give a try to the SCALE one when the former doesn’t deliver any results.

I wish I had the time to edit the Wiki... the sole reason I don't publish it is that there would be a LOT of manual editing involved as I couldn't create an automated script to convert everything into the local Wiki format (I had special problems with linked images, which just didn't want to work).

I have no time to reedit my articles when crossposting - I do everything with automated scripts. Unfortunately, so far, I haven't been able to come up with a script that would convert my articles 100% to the XDA-Dev Wiki - I had problems with the image conversions. Asmy articles are FULL of images, both linked and inline, it'd require a LOT of work to edit them all before submitting. I wish I had the time for that...
I did quite a bit of research before starting this thread. I found many results, but most if not all of them were incredibly old.
So here's my question:
What is the best way to get Wikipedia to work on our Windows Mobile devices without an internet connection?
I'd be ready to get a 16GB microSD card if that's what needed, but this is almost a life objective for me to get the encyclopedia on my device.
You can't. Wikipedia's text dump by itself is probably close to 16GB, and then it requires SQL and PHP, both of which aren't available on WM (and even if it were, it would be too slow).

Good to know they've, at last, updated their database file...
I knew I had seen this done
I follow a blog called lifehacker, and they covered this awhile back.
Heres the article:

Wow.
I'm actually surprised it works. Thanks a lot! Our arguments are going to be much shorter now.
I've found another one, with 550,000 articles in 225 MB:

edit: Just noticed it's a pay software... Don't know if the demo is limited in any way. Testing as soon as it'll finish downloading.

Hi everybody I didn't find anything about this in other threads, so I post here the files necessary for a perfect visualization of MSreader on HD2.
install via active sync (on SD card) the file "MSreader PPC ITA.exe", it will create a "windows" folder on the card, open that folder (I don't remember if it contains or not another "MSreader" folder or only files) and copy away all the files in a folder of your choice
uninstall MSreader PPC ITA and install via active sync (on device or SD as you prefer) the file "MSreader WM 6.1.exe", it will create his own folder in your program folder, then soft reset.
go to the folder where you previously saved first installation files and copy everything in your new MSreader program folder and accept overwriting, then soft reset
You should have the reader working perfectly, in italian language and 4 font size option instead of 3.
If you want it in another language (not verified)
download the 2.4.1 version from microsoft website , install it instead of PPC ITA version and follow other steps.
It should be working in the chosen language, I'm not shure cause the PPC ITA version I attached is an older version I think..
The only bug I found is that installing the reader is disabled the pdf files preview in documents tab (tested only on ROM Artemis 9) ..so give a try and report.

EDIT: for those who use BOOKLIB to manage the library and want to open msreader directly from it I think it' necessary to install firstly the WM version of MSr on device and then simply overwrite using the PPC version. Otherwise when you try to open a .lit book via booklib it won't be able to find MSreader..
works also in landscape using an app that makes rotate the screen.
PLToggle seems the best cause works on request, autorotation is not suggested due to the long loading time of the reader.
I used AEButton plus, unfortunately has some issues with button mapping on WM 6.5.x (with WM6.5 ROM I mapped the volume buttons for MSreader page up-down -EDIT: volume button issue seems solved, see here ) but rotation option works and I mapped the start and back button for page up-down . If You make a search into this forum there are other light apps for screen rotation that can be used.
You need some patience when rotate MSreader, it needs half a minute for big files before you can manage them, because the app is reloading all the .ebo annotation file with the landscape format (same when you go back to portrait).
If someone wants to use another reader such as Freda but has a massive .lit ebook collection and doesn't want to lose it and wants something easier and faster than Calibre conversion to epub format software, there's Convert LIT a very good an fast conversion software that starting from a .lit file creates a html file with related images in a single folder named as the ebook, all you have to do is copy that folder in Freda library.
When you open Freda library you have to allow the search in subfolders and yuo'll find your new html books.. open one and you'll have it with images and hypertextual links!
thanks! nice job
EDIT:
any other bug found/solved?

it works, it is a PC installer file:
-connect your hd2 to PC using active sync
-run MSreader PPC ITA.exe on your desktop
-follow instructions on desktop and device screen
Thank you for your effort and sharing ..
I hope you can excuse me If I ask a newbie question :
why I should do all those steps ? is the application not free?

No, it's free, but microsoft abandoned this project ,so there is not a version for latest windows mobile.
installing only the WM 6.1 version on new devices gives fonts and visualization issues.
Installing as described in post #1 avoid that issues, it results a sort of improved merged version, without leaving installation files in windows folder.
