ATT Check water damaged phone for ROM - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi,
I have an HTC Fuze. Currently i have WM 6.5 on it and i have no clue what my stock att rom version was. I have the warranty that covers practically everything like water damage and me just dropping the phone. I am concerned that ATT will be able to tell my rom version even if the phone is broken. If the phone breaks and it will not turn on is there a way for them to tell my rom version? If they can tell can anybody help point me in the right direction for the right stock rom. Thanks.

If you do a insurance claim on the device you pay the deductible and get a new device, they do not check rom info at all. Sometimes you are not even required to return device.

you can rent a wood chipper at home depot.

They DO REQUIRE you to return the fuze. I would flash the at&t stock back on there. It will also wipe out your personal info on it too. I would flash it if ya can, it take like 5 min of your time, just to save a bunch of hassle and potentially causing your ins. claim to be voided since you modded the phone.

I used to work at ATT, they do not require you to return it under certain circumstances. Its usually for insurance returns though.
For example, how would you return a phone if it was stolen?
Most mobile dealers hire people that don't even know what a ROM is in the first place. Ive seen devices taken back that clearly say "SECURITY UNLOCKED" across the top of the boot loader, and thats the screen the phone is stuck on (obviously a bad flash that the n00b didnt know how to fix). Ive even known people to take back water damaged phones and get a customer service rep that didn't even check the LDI to see if it was pink, but gave out a new phone.

Expansys says my TP upgraded illegally- no warranty

So my TP touchscreen stopped working, and even when I re-booted the stock ROM from HTC, there was no action- I was stopped at the calibration screen. I sent the unit back to Expansys, and I received the following reply.
"Greg,
Hey my repair centers exact words were that the device was upgraded illegally. Thus why the refusal to repair under warranty. The charge is to put back to all factory settings. basically they have to replace the guts of the unit.
Thanks,
Joe Bunch
Customer service Supervisor"
I paid almost $1000 for this phone, and the touchscreen gave up the ghost, now it is the OS smoking the hardware?
Any input would be helpful, as I'm really not sure how this plays out.

Get the phone back and put everything back to stock like spl and and stuff i had the same problem with my fuze when the screen stopped working i tried my best in guessing and flashed stock rom and stock spl BUT i messed up with the SPL because i forgot to read the directions properly and my device would not activesync any more so i took the risk anyways and sent it to HTC directly since i am not with ATT i cant get a device replacement from ATT. i just got my phone back about 4 days ago and HTC installed a new screen without any problems.
Thanks for the help. Can I send it directly to HTC instead of to Expansys first, because that is how expansys has it set up.

You should be able to Expansys is just a retail seller like ATT and them. So i believe you should be able to send it directly to HTC. Call the number look it up on their websites. If you can not find it let me know and i will look for it again.
Thanks so much for the idea, I'm having Expansys send it back to me, I'll hard-reset the phone, and send it into HTC with my receipt from Expansys.
Greg
Also, you have flashed ROMs and Hard spl on it right? If so i would suggest you try and get the stock ROM that you got with the phone and then try to put stock SPL back. Message me if you need help with what i am talking about.
i contacted htc directly for my european tpro and they are ready to repair my battery drain problem. however, i need to flash stock rom and spl before sending. i am little nervous flashing stock spl - not sure if it would brick my phone or not. once i do this, i can send it to them. i read the first page from hardspl, it looks straightforward - hope it stays that way.

make sure you read towards the bottom of the first post on the hard spl page. There they have specific instructions for returning back to stock spl.
URGENT Info needed
I did that - everything worked fine..... the last step says "to verify, volume down + reset, see version number on tricolour screen, should now just say 1.90.0000". When I tried to do that - I dont see tricolor screen.
In my device info, it says " ROM = 5.05.405.1 WWE"; "Radio = 1.11.25.01" and protocol = "52.58.25.30U".
Does this mean that I fully recovered this to factory settings?
Thanks

Not sure how the law in your countries handles these kind of things. But over here software CANNOT limit warranty. You remember the warning that goes something like this: "this device is designed to handle interference, even if it is harmfull for the device itself." So even when you use your device normally, it can stop functioning, due to it's software.... Does this limit warranty? NO.
What if you installed Photoshop on your laptop and your laptop overheats due to Photoshop heavy CPU usage. Is your laptop manufacturer limiting your warranty? NO. Say you don't like Vista and reinstall XP. Nothings happens to your warranty. That's how warranty works, it is ment for hardware malfunction due to bad design. If your device dies due to some software interference (illegal or not), that's bad hardware design and cannot limit your warranty. Although here in Holland. Not sure how that's abroad.

You should check this out. Companies can say all sort of stuff regarding warranty, but they are not the law (or above the law). Consumers have rights. So go learn and kick Expansys' b*tt with your new learned stuff. I'm almost certain that the US has some homolog law.

There are good number of threads out there that can help you, I recommend searching. In short, any time you're going to send your phone in to AT&T, it's a good idea to unroot and install a stock RUU. I'm not 100% on the rules or whatever, but rooting voids warranty and if AT&T sees it they may reject your warranty claim, assuming you go the route to send it in. Search for Gene's tool to unroot, or use the AAHK (I believe there is a step in there to unroot). I've used Gene's tool and I know it works fine.
The only alternative I can think of is taking it to a 3rd party to have it fixed. You probably won't have to unroot then but if you're paying for insurance you might as well use it and not pay out of pocket..unless of course the fix would be relatively cheap but honestly can't see that being the case. Hope that helps!
If the phone is under manufacters warranty then spend the $5 for shipping to have to sent to the HTC department address they give you. Its much cheaper and a better route to go than yo have ATT charge you $150 for the phone insurance coverage. I had to send mine in. I unrooted it and put it back to complete stock. That was all I needed to do. Because they never said my warranty was voided when they received my phone upon looking at it and testing it, or whatever they do.
So just unroot and return to complete stock and you'll be fine.

My S-ON tool will work without USB. Just get it on your SD card somehow (via adapter, or download from phone):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208507
I talked to ATT today and they gave me the number for the warranty replacement hotline. I've noticed that my phone has become increasingly hard to turn on via the power button (Its become slightly recessed), the battery door doesn't fit onto the phone, making the top volume key hard to press, and the vibration feels as if something has become lose inside the device.
My question is, what if when the manufacturers test the device, they decide that nothing was initially wrong. Will I get some sort of weird bill?
My device is completely spotless, minus the details mentioned above.

[Q] phone needs to be repaired, is it still possible to unroot phone?

some time in the past week, i accidentally dropped my HTC one X and the LCD screen broke (several cracks) which obviously would require a replacement but the phone is still usable, i can still call/text, literally everything except of course the screen is cracked.
So i went to the nearest HTC service center and the screen replacement would cost $260 (converted to dollars from my local currency) PLUS $150 because im using a different ROM (MIUI to be exact) and not the stock ROM.
theyre asking me to pay an additional fee because im using a different ROM and a rooted phone, I only wanted to replace my LCD screen. the OS is still working! and they were saying some technical stuff like the board was broken and other reasons they could think of to persuade me.
now my question, is it still possible to 'unroot' my phone and bring it back to the HTC stock ROM, without a trace of being rooted previously?
this topic is also related to my other post "How to get RUU - i need it to revert back to stock ROM"

It is possible, using an RUU to relock the bootloader and unroot the phone, but where the bootloader says ***TAMPERED*** and ***UNLOCKED*** now, it will change to ***RELOCKED***. AFAIK, there is no way to make the boatloader show ***LOCKED***", it will forever show ***RELOCKED***, unless you unlock it again. So basically there will always be some trace of your phone having been unlocked. Someone else pointed out that, aSsuming you've followed the most popular unlock guides, you had the use the HTC Dev site to get a file, and that since you did that, it's also on record on some server someWhere that you have unlocked your phone.
So basically, unless it's a know manufacturing defect, you are most likely screwed. Don't quote me on that though, as there are always stories of people saying the right things to the right people and getting their devices replaced where most others were not able to.

You can change the flag back to LOCKED if you S-off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168578
But as mentioned, HTC presumably has some record of you unlocking the bootloader via the HTCDev.com website.
Plus, there was a thread a while back on the "international" One X forum section where people were reporting that HTC was honoring the warranty for phones with unlocked bootloaders; but denying warranty service for unlocked bootloader if a custom ROM was every installed (even if the phone was returned to the stock ROM before sending in for warranty). So apparently, HTC has some way of knowing a custom ROM was ever installed, even if its no longer on the phone.
A question for the OP: have you tried going through your carrier for a repair? Some carriers (such as AT&T) seem to be much more forgiving about modding the phone, and might forego any "custom ROM" fee.
$150 extra to replace a screen because you have a custom Rom? They have no relation. Find someone else to do the repair, or just order the parts and do it yourself. Not very hard to do, order LCD+digitizer, and watch some you tube videos on the process.

Verizon S3 Wont turn on after proper rom flash

Ok, Phone was rooted suscessfully, Unlocked bootloader, was running a 4.2.2 Rom.
Buddy found the MS HD 10.0 Rom and wanted to try it. US phone. I looked at all the details and didnt see anything about it not being compatable.
Flashed the rom, went through all the GUID steps selected roms , styles etc etc, and It said completed "click here to reboot" So i did so.
Went black screen and now wont DO ANYTHING. cant get into download mode, recovery, a vibrate out of the phone, anything. Took the battery out for a min and plugged it in and get the orange light. Put the battery back in and STILL NOTHING. Please help! Buddy phone and he needs it
It's best to think of the international gs3 and us gs3 as two different phone. Because they are.
Flashing firmware meant for a different phone will result in a hard brick. Sorry

As was said above, MS HD ROM is for the international S3 (i9300). It is important to make sure you are in the right forum before downloading and flashing any ROMs. Unfortunately, many still make this mistake. The only way to fix is to replace the phone or send it to these guys:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/
You can try and send it for JTAG repair (places like mobile tech) and they may be able to revive it.
But I'm not sure if places like best buy can positively confirm it was a bad flash if the phone is completely dead. I wouldn't think so but I'm not 100%

How about the Download Jig
If you are talking about Black Tie Insurance from Best Buy then you are fine and this is not fraud. Insurance is for boo boo's like dropping, smashing, flashing failures, drop in the toilet...all of that. They do not care if phone was rooted or misflashed. Insurance is not fraud, trying to get free replacements from the carrier under warranty by lying is.

Warranty return after s-off and/or root

Has anyone ever been "caught" and denied a warranty return after s-off and\or root? You hear all of these horror stories of you warranty being void but I personally have never had a problem.
I rooted my original Incredible and got two warranty replacements in the first year. One was for a blown speaker and the other was because I bricked it. When I bricked it I called Verizon and played dumb and said 'I don't know what is going on with my phone but it won't boot up'. They asked me a few questions and then said something like 'wow, I have never seen that before we will send you a new one.'
On my Incredible 4G, I rooted and s-offed (via HTC DEV before they removed it from the list) and got a warranty replacement (I don't remember what the problem was that caused me to exchange it). In fact, when I got the replacement it was obviously s-on and no longer unlockable via HTC Dev so I called Verizon to complain (told them something about being a software developer so I needed a phone I could ROM and develop on) hoping they would give me a HTC One (M7). Of course they did not but my point is no one seems to care about s-off or root.
Each time I have done a warranty exchange I have done it via phone not in the store. They ship me a new phone next day and I send my old one back. I would find it hard to believe that they have someone sitting there opening returned phones, checking for root or s-off, comparing them to the call that originated the return and then following up. Instead, I am sure the process is more like: Get the returned phone, note the RMA and note on the account that the old phone was returned, check for physical damage, throw it in a pile with all of the other returned phones to be formatted, re-flashed, tested and sold as refurbished phones.
I exchanged my weaksauce rooted M8 to the store last Friday due to frequent reboots. The sales guy turned on the screen, set it down, and rang me up a new one. He didn't boot into HBoot to look for s-off, and didn't look for any root checker or rooting application.
My experience is that the 'you will void your warranty' line is a scare tactic and it doesn't worry me one bit. While I am sure s-off and rooting can cause physical harm to a phone (maybe by doing something like overclocking) but I do not believe that the big cell phone companies like Verizon have any process in place to catch this. They do thousands of returns a day and don't care to slow down their return exchange process to check for the 1 out of 1000 rooted\s-off phones they come through.
This is my opinion and experience I would be interested in yours.

There is always a risk, although I personally will send in phones S-OFF even, and never had an issue. (I don't suggest this)
From my understanding, they get so many devices to repair, really all they look at is for water damage and things of that nature.
It would take too long to go through every device they get returned for whatever reason to see if it has been rooted at on point.
I also am yet to know of anyone to get caught and having to pay for the device due to rooting.
I've destroyed one phone (older Samsung 4G) by accidentally installing inappropriate software. It was about 3 days old, bricked it completely. Even the service guys couldn't reflash it. The folks at the store really didn't check anything or ask any questions, They just threw it in the return barrel and gave me a new one. Wouldn't worry too much, unless you return frequently, they shouldn't give you a hard time. After all, what do they care?
This made me think of a question. With this phone being an all-in-one construction, how would they tell if it has water damage?

I'm guessing they're not too worried about water damage with these phones...
They do pay attention in the retail stores though. My account was once flagged for having a rooted phone, galaxy nexus, when I took it in for some issue, I don't remember why. Yes, first mistake was allowing them to have my phone, lesson learned. Luckily I know people who work for Verizon and they had to go in and remove the note which stated my phone was rooted and warrantee was voided.

I went in to return my M8 due to battery issues and the Verizon guy who had to call tech support stated that when they send the phones in if they've been rooted in the past that even if you unroot it and turn S-On they can tell that it's been rooted and that S was indeed On and turned Off. He stated they can tell how many times you do it and boom you get a $400 charge on your account for the price of the phone they gave you and you had a voided warranty.
As hard as that is to believe, I feel like there may be such a thing where they Devs can tell if the phone was rooted, when, and how many times... But i'm no Dev. Someone working for Verizon care to chime in?

Maybe they can tell but do they even look or care? My experience is that they don't care. In my case, three times, I have returned a s-off and rooted phone (not to the store, via mail). I didn't bother to try to go back to s-on or un-root. They wouldn't need black magic to tell my phones were tampered with - just turn it on. My point is they don't care and they don't look (at least when you deal with Verizon via phone).
I stand by my claim that it is a scare tactic and they don't even look.

That's why I say deal with 1-800 Verizon not a store. You get a replacement the next day so long as you can be without the replacement for a day that is the way to go.

Warranty claims they will easily swap. I called about a Rezound that would get incredibly hot while charging. They sent me a new phone that arrived the next day. I sent back the old phone with S-Off, rooted, and a custom rom installed. From what I've read all they check is that the phone will power on.
I'll find out soon. Enough just sent an M8 back to BIG RED Monday. I'll update when it shows received and there are no extra charges added to my account.
I have a replacement on the way myself. Hopefully we have no issues. The phone aesthetically is in perfect condition.
I claimed my warranty the other week from a cracked screen and I just flashed a modified hboot before sending it off so that it said locked and s-on
Upgrading my phone at Verizon took me hours to do. While the time passed I talked to the Verizon associate about how I've rooted every smart phone I've ever owned and he didn't seem to mind a bit that those were all their phones, and actually seemed quite intrigued about doing so himself. Anyway my microphone piece won't work during calls, so I'm going to replace mine through Verizon's warrantee claims phone number. I'll post with results.
Unlocked, s-off, rooted with modified hboot that shows status locked and s-on.
Just an update. All seems good no extra charges or calls asking WTF?? Just a message saying thanks for returning the phone and my next bill came. Which is normal.
