Can I reinstall apps after rooting phone + other questions - G1 Android Development

I'm sick and tired of waiting for Cupcake to be released, and I just want to get it over with. I need to know a few things first, though.
I know I need to root my phone. Firstly, will I be able to re-install all the apps I've purchased after rooting? Secondly, which is the better of the Cupcake builds, JF's one or Haryuko's one?
Also, if I was to say root my phone and stick the ADP 1.1 build onto it, would I then get the regular ADP 1.5 build delivered OTA? Not that it matters, but I'd like to know. Thanks much!

Yes. You can still install purchased apps as long as you use any custom ROMs with market fix. I prefer JF ADP 1.5 it's stable and faster for me. If you wait for the OTA ADP update you wont be able to purchase any paid/protected apps so I recommend using custom ROMs like JF, Haykuro, and Dude's cupcake w/ market fix. G1 w/no root=Boring

ok i flashed to sql and it works fine

i bricked one HTC Dream (G1) Black PVT 35 with new radio but **** it, i went and bought another g1 and was bold enough to try again and it worked, so that was cool, installed the newest haykuro update and learned i didnt like it as much as i liked jf 1.5, so i downloaded the newest jf 1.5 build and flashed my phone to it and it sits on the g1 screen, so i was like omg, thinking i bricked my new g1, but i didnt i was able to get back in the bootloader, so i whiped again and tried my famous jf 1.5 and it sat on the g1 screen again, so i said wtf, so i went back to the haykuro build, i decided to choice the g build since its the one i like, and it worked fine and went passed the g1 screen, so with the new sql, im i only limited to HTC Magic builds ??
1st G1 really bricked? maybe you can access adb even if you're in G1 screen?
Cant explain why, but i've personally run HK 6.0 (current) and dudecake 1.1 (plan on returning for 1.2 release) and roomate is on JF 1.5, all with new SPL

I rooted my G1 and went from rc-29 to Jf 1.43 Holiday[http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/02/11/jfv143/] and everything works but i want to move on to hero or 2.0 or maybe motoblur or something. any rom i try to load the same way i got to "holiday" sends my phone into a never ending loop or sits @ the g1 screen so i just go back to the jf rom and wipe and reload it....can anyone help me? im not able to find any info on how to downgrade from a jf or move to a different rom.

Root 1.5 or Upgrade to 2.1 Release Then Root?

So I've rooted my phone already, I had updated to the .6 Sprint release and went back to .5 and used that method. My wife's Hero is still on 1.5. I'd like to be able to back up all of her apps before flashing a custom ROM.
My question, is there any drawback to rooting from 1.5 and then installing a custom ROM like Regaw's, or Fresh, or Nfinite's, or CM6? Am I able to do this without first running the .5 RUU? Will I need to manually upgrade the radio if I do this?
Sorry for all the questions, I know how to find all of these root methods, but not sure what method is best to make sure I get everything updated and running properly.
Thanks!

You do not need to ruu at all unless you have to take your phone in for service under warranty.
No problems at all. Once you are rooted and have recovery installed you can flash away. Just remember to wipe EVERYTHING in between flashings. It will save u a ton of annoyances.
My opinion is go straight to CM6 it is amazingly fast and stable. Just in case you dont know the link to the IRC channel for CM6 here it is: http://webchat.bikcmp.com:9090/?channels=hero-cdma
Welcome to the HERO and be careful. Flashing is VERY addictive.

[Q] Can someone walk me through the steps on how to install CM7 on my Huawei Ascend?

Hello XDA fourm people! First of all, I want to say thank you to all the devs out there working hard to get us nice things on our phones
I am a noobie at flashing custom roms so I need a bit of help. I have a cricket Huawei Ascend running 2.1 update 1. I recently read about the CM7 rom that has been succesfully ported over to the ascend but I have no idea where to even start. My phone IS rooted using z4root, but i really want to install CM7.
I know you have to do a nandroid back up and then used clockwork mod? I have somewhat of an idea of what these things do, but I dont know how to use them or where to get them. Any help would be appreciated.
Lol and I know that some of you are looking at this rolling your eyes, but I'm just new and trying to get the hang of it.

They make it where almost anyone can do this so if you have further questions feel free to ask as I have been bricking my phone and reflashing it back to normal since I bought it lol...also you might look into getting multiple custom ROMS at that same site as one is not really better than the other so you'll want to check out all of em at some point
Myself I have flashed Icarus 1.1 and CM7-Ascend-04052011 (also flashed the nightly release of this but just for a recovery reason which failed) I would suggest Icarus 1.1 if you want an extremely stable ROM that runs off the current system you have on your phone. CM7 is still a little unstable but I run it as an everyday driver because it uses 2.3.3 gingerbread and it also allows for system overclocking to 710mhz without the use of third party apps. Like I said though, test drive them all and have fun with it. Just make sure you make a factory back up and a back up directly after each launch of flashing just in case something does go wrong you can also go back to the bulky OS your running now ;-)

Thank you! I followed a thread that showed me how to flash CM7. It is buggy and unstable, but I love it! I've wanted to flash Icarus too, but i think Im going to play around with CM7 for a bit and see how it works out.

2.3.6 Root questions/AOSP 2.3.x?

I have two questions...
1. I had rooted my A2 when it was 2.3.5 and deleted a few apps. When the OTA update to 2.3.6 rolled around, I couldn't update because ATT is a grouch. Anyway, to solve that problem, I had to flash stock 2.3.5 back onto the phone removing root access and everything. I then proceeded to update to 2.3.6 which is fine. that's running stock as I type this. My question is, if I root it again on 2.3.6 (I know it's there...) and I freeze apps, when another OTA update rolls around, will I be able to update again? I don't want to have to flash it back to 2.3.6...(can I even do that yet?) so any help here would be appreciated.
2. I was out and about, and was looking at one of my friend's phones. She has this HTC HD2 running Android 2.3.3 AOSP. She uses ADWLauncher, etc etc. This is a Windows Phone, originally. That got me thinking...is there a AOSP version of Gingerbread for my A2? Without Blur? I'm kinda scared to do anything to it, because I want to be able to get ICS come July. Any tips here would help.
Sorry for not using the searchbar, I was just having trouble finding this info. Thanks guys!
1. Yes. Freezing apps / removing bloat as root will almost definitely keep you from the any OTA. Its the nature of the beast. You can always return to stock and apply the updates later. Also, any major update like ICS will produce a lot of posts here about how to update from an altered rom.
2. There is development work on getting CM7 to work on our phone. Currently the only released ROM that I am aware of is lfaber06's ROM

When a major update such as ICS is released, there will be alternate ways to install such as through bootstrap. Hopefully we'll find a leaked version of ICS before that, and pull the radio get CM9 working
Okay. So I'm planning on rooting it...now...but when I flashed 2.3.5 from the fxz someone provided, it said that once you updated to 2.3.6 you could never go back...but...
I'll try it.
What's bootstrap? I've heard about it and no one has been able to dumb it down for me...could anyone do that?
You can flash the FXZ after the update. It just requires a bit of modification and care. You might want to read the noob thread. It has lots of useful info.
Bootstrap is a way to backup, restore, and flash zips before android boots.
I just rooted the 2.3.6 it's running wonderfully.
Should I install the ibfaber deoxed rom? I mean I know I can do it per instructions but is it worth it?
It depends on what you want to do. If you want to apply any themes you will need to be running the deoxed rom. He also has a supercharged rom that has a lot more customization.
