OTA 1.5 update I haz it. - G1 Android Development

If someone posted this already I couldn't find it. I just saw the whole thread about the HTC release. I just got the OTA update notification for my ADP.
44 MB! I wasn't sure if anyone else has had such luck.
Sorry if this has already been stated.

That isn't just an OTA perse. 44mb is the whole firmware itself. Additionally, the ADP 1.5's already been officially posted by HTC.

Can you post the download link ? ADP is release by google then I think this FW will be different from last 1.5 FW from HTC

no its the same... infact 3 threads down
http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html
That is the manual link (for ADP1.0) to upgrade, as only ADP1.1 has the ability to do OTA. The OTA you got was just that one (released a few days ago).

I just got the OTA 1.5 update too. Not sure if I'm gonna install it though, I want the JF candy.

Did a search on Twitter. Looks like many people are getting the OTA update tonight. Happy joy.

Ok, so I decided to install it after all. Man that was fast. I read a few reviews about the 1.5 fw yesterday (probably the HTC one) and they said the install took several minutes. For me it was as quick as applying a theme, took a minute, tops, plus roughly 30 seconds to boot.
I went straight from JFv1.43 ADP1.1h to this one, no wipe. Everything just worked brilliantly.
Ok, now I'm off to play around with it. First impression though: Man this thing is fast, compared to 1.1.

First problem, and it's a big one. No Market. It'll start, but then autoclose half a second later. Also, I can't log on to youtube (I can't find a way to log in, am I blind?), so I can't upload videos I shoot.

It's probably because you didn't do a wipe :/ and just go to the video you want and select share and it should give you youtube as an option.

Yeah, I suspect I need to wipe and reinstall the damn thing.
That's what I did. I went to Camera Videos, long press the video, chose YouTube, got this message: "Cannot upload, no user account information available."
So... where do I enter the user account info?

I think you have to flash it first and maybe that's the reason many of the things you are trying to do are not working, flash and see if that's why.

You have to sign into your youtube account through the youtube app if you don't have your gmail and youtube accounts linked. If they are linked then it should already be signed in.

They're not linked.
I sign in via the "My account" menu option in the YouTube app? Nothing happens when I press that option. Nothing at all.
Seems I need to wipe. Now I'm just looking for the right 1.5 update.zip to apply after the wipe. I'm not sure if the one available via HTC is the exact same one you get from the Google OTA.

Nobody going to search logcat and find the url? comeon ppl, help the community out ;P

Hi,
i installed the update, but i lost superuser i had jf1.42 adp fw before. i like new features of android 1.5, but root is more important to me. Strange that it still looks like ADP, when i wiped data and booted, it showed "Welcome to Android Dev Phone 1", but no root there...
is there some way to get it again, or i have to downgradu to rc29/rc7 again?
thanks

Haven't tried youtube, but no problems with Market on my ADP (going from from JFv1.43 ADP1.1h to HTC 1.5) or anything else I've noticed. Did a complete wipe tho.
Finally MyTracks works with uploading tracks to MyMaps, which it refused to do with JF 1.43!

Yes, it's really easy - it's somewhere in the ADP 1.5 is out!!! thread.
A few lines using adb shell and you're back to normal - Ah here it is:
adb shell
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cat /system/bin/sh > /system/bin/su
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
/Mats

i can't use mount, if i am not root:
Code:
$ mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mount: Operation not permitted

Google is trying to update my phone

I just got a message saying there is an update available. I told it not to do it. I do not want RC30 because it gets rid of root.
However, the other side of me is tempted to see if telnetd and all the other goodies are still there.
I'm also very tempted to install it to see if it removes root access. I hope someone who doesn't care about root access tests this out and reports back soon, because my curiosity is about to get the better of me.
It won't stop prompting me and I don't think I have the heart to keep saying no.
Look on your phone, and see if there is a file named "update.install" in the /cache folder. Or maybe in the /cache/recovery folder. If so, would you mind grabbing it off your phone and posting it somewhere?

The only file of interest in the /cache directory is named, signed-RC30-from-RC29-fat.1582cace.zip. From this I'm assuming it's going to update my phone to RC30. I've made the file available here in case anyone is curious.
Ah, ok. It looks like that's the same file I just posted a link to then. Thanks

It did it.
just as I get home to catch up on the "jailbreak" and start doing it I get an
error while connecting to server, "connection refused"
error while receiving from server null
So I figured I'd check (I neglect my phone when I'm at work, and no, I don't recall accepting the update)
lo and behold:
Build description: kila-user 1.0 TC4-RC30 116143
ota-rel-keys, release-keysBuild ID: TC4-RC30
Build Date: Fri Oct 31 19:00:53 PDT 2008
Build type: user
Phone type: dream
Product brand: tmobile
Build user: android-build
Build host: undroid11.corp.google.com
Linux kernel version: 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0
[email protected] #6Mon Oct 6 14:13:36 PDT 2008Baseband version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
RIL Impl version: HTC-RIL 1.0 (Aug 19 2008,21:32:33)

That just proves that RC30 is specificaly out to close the telnet jailbreak method.
No need to apply it to patch/update other parts of the OS since it doesn't have anything else.

yes
tried pterminal and terminal emulator
netstat shows the ip
but telnet from pc fails to connect failed on port 23 and the port shown on netstat
I also tried the steps koush put up but still fail
granted I'm no linux/unix pro and I just installed cygwin a couple days after the connect bot app came out; so I may be doing something wrong
Does google check in the new change into the source tree before they push a update?
In addition to jailbreak fix there is a battery fix as well and a few others according to androidcommunity.com.
Well I finally got tired of clicking no and decided to go ahead and perform the update. After it finished, the phone rebooted and instead of booting up, the phone simply displays a '!' icon with a triangle around it and hangs. I'm not taking this as a good sign. I tried removing the battery but that didn't help.
I really hope the update didn't just brick my phone.

No dice. The phone reboots but still hangs at the error screen. The only thing I can think that might have caused it is that, while playing around, I set a root password and forgot to clear it before the update rebooted the phone. Who knows. I guess I'll call tmobile and see what can be done.
edit: I should mention that pressing alt-w to wipe the phone does not work either. It still returns to the error screen. I'm talking to tmobile tech support now and the original tech said that 'they were informed that a small number of users might experience this problem with the update'. I'm on hold waiting to talk to an android tech now. My advice to everyone who's played around with adding any extra files to /etc to hold off on upgrading for now. I'll report back with the results of my call with the android tech.
Now they're saying they would like to exchange the phone. Problem is the g1 isn't in their replacement program yet.
Aaaand they're out of stock so it's going to be at least 2 weeks.
I wish I'd have just kept hitting no.
Disturbing news, especially as I'm wanting to install a modified rc30. What exactly did you change?
I was playing around with trying to get dropbear to work and in the process I created some files in /etc (passwd, shadow, groups, etc). As well as creating a new regular user, I also added a password to the root account and carelessly forgot to remove it before applying the update. I'm only guessing here but I wouldn't be surprised if the new root password is what did it. The system does not have one by default and I wonder if that caused it to hang, waiting for a password to be entered while booting.
On a brighter note, I persisted and was able to get them to send me out a new phone immediatly. This has the added benefit of possibly fixing the loose-screen/creaking problem that I, like many others, am experiencing with the phone.
I'm wondering if I should try manually applying the update from the SD card while I wait for the new phone to see if that solves the problem. I probably should have tried that before calling. I'm hesitant to do that now, however, since if it does fix it, I'm not sure how tmobile would react to me returning a perfectly working phone.

I don't get it. The update should restore whole /system folder, isn't it? /etc is actually a symlink to /system/etc, so, it should be restored too and passwd file successively removed.
Otherwise, I don't see any problem to keep the root access! Since /system is mounted without nosiud (any changes in RC30?), just keep a copy of shell with chmod 4777 somewhere there... where it wouldn't be removed by update, as it keeps passwd, and that's it.
Please, tell me where am I wrong, cause I definitely should be wrong somewhere.
PS: BTW, what was the progress with dropbear? I actually tried to make it work too, creating passwd etc, but no success...

Unlike the RC29 update, the RC30 update doesn't actually do a complete wipe and restore of the /system folder. It patches a number of files (which will fail if any of them have been modified), and does a recursive chmod on the entire /system directory to clear any suid bits.

Modified TC5-RC8 update

Update: Here's an updated update. This update updates your phone so that it is updated. Note: if you apply this update over the previous update, it updates the update that you had previously updated your phone with, so that you have the most recent update.
This one contains the same stuff as my RC30 v1.2 update. Go read the notes for it over in that thread
Plus! You now get a voice dialer, amazon MP3, and all 4 IM types available on the US firmware (aim, gtalk, windows live and yahoo).
Note: to get the other IM providers, you have to delete the improvider settings after you install the update. Open a terminal and type the following command as root:
rm -r /data/data/com.android.providers.im
Then reboot the phone, and you should have all 4 IM providers available.
And now, for something completely different. A man with 3... err. nevermind, it's just the download link.

http://android-dls.com/forum/index.php?f=24&t=190&rb_v=viewtopic (see forum post for actual link to file)
----------------------
As usual, this can only be installed if you have already installed the modified recovery image. If you are running the official RC30 or RC8 build, you won't be able to use this.
To install, rename the file to update.zip, put it on the sd card, and reboot the phone into recovery mode (home + power). Once the recovery mode comes up, press alt+L to turn on the text display, and alt+S to apply the update.
This build can be installed by anyone that has the modified recovery image - it will run on both US or UK phones. Note though, some of the functionality in the US version is missing in the UK version: Voice dialing, myfaves, amazon mp3 store, chat messages via SMS.
And there might be other miscellaneous issues with running this build on a US phone.. possible MMS issues, etc. If you do encounter anything, feel free to post about it (it's good to know what works and doesn't), but don't expect it to be fixed . I may be able to fix some stuff.. but I can't work miracles
For all you people out there that aren't on t-mobile, installing this should fix the myfaves issues that y'all have been having (sending SMSs to t-mobile.. etc.)
Note: you can freely switch between the modded RC30 and modded RC8 build. If you install one and don't like it, you can always switch back.
Big thanks to SGTDavePwnage for finding the download, and for testing out the update! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443713

Ooh I'm so going to try that.. no MyFaves..
I'm still nowhere on making my own build... My Ubuntu has decided that I wasn't entitled to networking anymore.. (i hate that thing)
Thanks for your hard work!
No network for you! 1 year!
Just throw Ubuntu on a VM, you'll be building android in no time
Thanks JESUSFREKE, you did magic !
Well, I did screw up my network driver while trying to update the ATI ones.. but don't ask.
So I just updated my phone with your update and..... it seems to work
It took an awful lot of time to reboot so I got scared but it finally came up fine. I still have root of course (thanks so much)
Wifi ok, Camera ok, motion sensor ok.
Data.. I only get Edge, but that could be my provider not having 3G coverage here. To be verified. I don't use it much anyway since in my country the cheapest data plan is $40 for 50Mb.. :|
The dialer does not automatically format number in US format!! Yippee... I know it's a small thing but it was bugging me.
All contacts got lost (of course since they were managed by MyFaves). But syncing worked. With some errors in the background but apparently not too significant.
SMS ok. I'm not sure what you're calling SMS Chat. The SMS app still looks like a chat. I assume it's some T-Mo US feature that I won't miss.
And most important of all Mario Simulator still works fine . Seriously I can't find anything that doesn't work.
There is a new app "web'n'walk" from T-Mo which can not be removed through the normal application manager. If it's not replacing any android service i guess that a little remount and busybox mv should do the trick.
Amazon is indeed missing. I wonder if people who care about it could just copy the .apk and .odex file over and get it back. I don't care about it so I won't try. People still buy music?
I've been looking at logcat while writing this and I couldn't see any crazy SMS behavior.
So all in all a good upgrade for non T-Mo users with a US phone. For what it's worth I recommend it.

Hopefully I'm not being stupid - but is this the one for the UK? Whats the difference between RC30 and TC5-RC8 ?
Thanks for your hard work. T-Mobile in the UK have pushed out their update today - it keeps asking me if I want it (which I keep saying no) but need to make sure I get the correct image!
Yes, this is for the UK. (but will work on US handsets)
It is the new update that is currently being pushed out by T-mobile uk (but modified to keep root)
Functionally its not that different to RC7.
Think of it as the equivalent to RC30 (with all the nice US bits removed)

Yes, the Uk software doesnt use MyFaves (which controls contacts on US software).
That will be one side affect of switching between regions.
You can still re-sync with google and it will re-download them tho.

I agree with the legitimate part. The kernel, baseband, and build ID numbers all look rationally composed/upgraydded. As long as they don't "fix" the SPL or lock out test keys, I'm ok with a little bump for now.
I'm still waiting to see if this is real or not but I did notice something on the google android issues site that made me think we were getting close. Usually the last thing you test before release are upgrade scenarios.
[imported from Google's internal bug database]
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Dream device was running a pre-cupcake userdebug. within the last week
or so I had previously downloaded a set of files from browser, a couple
market apps, etc
2. Flashed cupcake userdebug, without wiping data
EXPECTED RESULTS:
On device boot-up, none of the previous notifications would be displayed
OBSERVED RESULTS:
The home screen displayed 13 or so "download complete" notifications that
were previously dismissed.
I then selected 'Clear Notifications'
Result -> Notifications cleared, then approximately 5 seconds later
reappeared, then immediately disappeared again.

The guy in the original thread said there's google voice searching.
Just got an email about:
To ensure a great experiance with the T-mobile G1 with Google, customers with these devices will receive an Over the Air (OTA) update to their devices between February 5 and February 15. The OTA will include new system enhancements such as the ability to save pictures or files by long-pressing an item, check for system updates, and use the Google Voice Search feature. The OTA will also fix a number of known issues. New G1 activations will receive the OTA up to three days after service has been activated.

Yes. It will be saved in /cache. All I need is the name of the zip file, and I can download it directly from google.
Everyone with RC30 check your logcat log for any sign of a zip file
something like
logcat -d V | grep zip
I got the same email that speoples20 got.
RC33 is an official update from T-Mobile to start being pushed out to the general public feb 5th to feb 15th and then for all new activations within 3 days.
speoples20 did you notice that The Forecast was dated February 2, 2008? Looks like T-Mobile came up with a time warp while making the OTA.
Just to clarify....
EVERYONE ON RC30 (JF OR NOT)
The reason for this is once JF has the file name, he will be able to download it.
NOT THE SD CARD CACHE!!!
Open Terminal Emulator
SU--Enter
Type in CD /cache
Type in LS
Now if that comes up empty, type THIS in and tell us if you see a log entry containing the file name:
logcat -d V | grep zip (enter)

can FOTA_UPDATE_ACTION or any of the other FOTA_* functions help out?
Also, you could try to force an update. Download and install anycut (if you haven't already ), and then make a shortcut to the "Device Info" activity. Open it up, go down to the bottom and click "check for update". If it starts downloading the file, I think it should say the name of the file on that same screen. If not, open up a terminal emulator and look in /cache, or try the logcat command:
logcat -d V | grep zip
CHECKIN_SUCCESS but no pending upgrades or downloads
I'm guessing that will be the case until Feb 5th or later for everyone else too.
ok word has spread fast about this issue at he AC and some people are asking from over here are asking JF users to still look for the zip file in the cache. but here is my question, will it even help? I ask because I am not sure about this:
All of us that have root are not supposed to be updated automatically. Now does that mean that the ota is downloaded by the phone and just never auto installed or does it mean that the file can never be downloaded ota?

Google Search by Voice v1.4.1 install fails

Searched the forum and wiki and can't find anything on this.
Trying hard not be a 'compleet newb'....
Problem: I've tried to download and install the latest update (v1.4.1) to Google Search by Voice. It fails saying it is not correctly signed. I am not able to uninstall it via the Market software. The existing version is present and still works.
I was thinking of manually uninstalling it and then attempting a re-install from the market. Has anyone had any success getting this update to install on CM 4.2.7.1?
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1 on my HTC Magic 32B, applied over the flashed and clean-installed 1.6 rooted base - no CM Updater. (Seems to give a better, more stable result - may affect the behaviour of the update).
this stupid error happens because of the test keys or the userdebug keys thay cyanogenmod uses. I would download it somewhere online and use adb to replace the old one wiht the new one. It should work.
Yes I have the same problem with same model phone etc. etc.
I understand the workaround will be the same as Google maps 3.2.1 update but I cannot find up to date "Google search by voice" apk. I was wondering if anyone knows a source that mirrors up to date apps, or could even link a tut about how to get apk's copied out of the phones /tmp folder?
Thanks
I'll check out the package name in the Applications settings and see if I can find it anywhere or somehow capture it. Later....won't have any time until this evening.

That's great I didn't think of that, ill whip out those quotation marks and asterisks for google too. Also later...... 00:20 is not the right time for this....... so tempted......!!!
I fixed the maps.apk problem by going into adb and uninstalling maps.apk and then removing all traces of it. Then I went to marketplace and i downloaded it as normal and it now works perfectly.
Try that with voice search
Do we know what the package name is? Usually something like "com.google.android.apps.xxx" Could try uninstalling through adb. Then re-download from the market?
hello, could u plz share the installer? its not available on the marketplace in my country.
thanks very much
success
Ok, I managed to get Google Search by Voice updated to 1.4.1. I'm no pro and it took ages but it works.
Could a mod advise whether I am allowed to post a link to the apk?
I would be happy to post the steps i took but its not something i have done before and worse still, i used cmd not putty (noob error #1!). So the commands and the order i used them in are lost.
Should have used ubuntu..............
the concept consisted of updating the app and simultaneously using this command while it was downloading
Code:
cp /cache/downloadfile-9.apk /sdcard/download
"9" is only because it is the 9th apk i have downloaded and once the install fails the OS deletes the apk.
(for anyone else it would be different. go into /cache and type ls at the prompt to see what your next number will be)
then rename downloadfile-*.apk to VoiceSearch.apk, remove the original in the phone using adb and replace with the updated app.
I will post again tomorrow with clearer instructions but would much rather post a link to the apk I got, if it is permitted
hmmm. doing an 'adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk' and reinstalling from the market still gives you the unsigned error?

yes it will still give an unsigned error.
that is why you need to copy the apk which android market downloads to /cache before it deletes it, i copied it to /sdcard/download. then install via adb afterwards.
you have to manual install the apk to avoid unsigned error, once you have done this any future updates through market will be fine. Maps updated fine to 3.3 after i manually installed 3.2.1
How?

Any advice on how you did that? I can imagine sitting with finger poised over the enter button in an adb shell.......is that what you did? Or is there a more certain, simple way?
Thanks.

I downloaded the VoiceSearch.apk file and adb pushed it into /system/app on my phone and it works perfectly. The market sees it as installed and valid.
But I inspected my "normal" load phone (which has voice search) and nowhere could i see anything resembling "VoiceSearch.apk".
Where is this file on an un-rooted phone?

froyo quickoffice problem

Upgraded to froyo from stock rom. I had quickoffice, which was free with the first att update. Now the icon is frakked and it says "this file is read only". The actual program seems to work fine, but i cannot fix the icon and quickoffice does not show up in the uninstaller. On the android market it does not recognize my phone having it installed, and i cannot get it free anymore (says $9.99). Anyway to fix this?
I had the same thing happen. I went to the quickoffice website and submitted a trouble ticket for it. May not help, but it was worth a shot.
same here, app works fine, just the icon is screwed up
mine shows in the app market, but as already installed and unable to locate on the phone to uninstall it
It's not that big of a deal to me

I submitted a trouble ticket and got the following back as a response:
The thing is that due to OEM decision the version you have now installed may be shipped with a limited number of features.
You may wish to purchase the full version of Quickoffice that support this feature. You'll be able to cancel the purchase within 24 hours, in case the app doesn't meet your requirements.

After a factory reset, Quick Office functions fine again and the icon is back to normal.
I think I'll just live with a messed up icon rather than a factory reset.
Does anyone have a link to the appropriate QuickOffice APKs with install instructions? I just installed Cog4.1 which is great but Quickoffice isn't there and the Market doesn't seem to know that we get it with our Captivates for free. It used to on other Froyos and Eclairs but not this one.

If you read a few posts above yours, a ticket was sent and they replied. It looks like the captivate no longer gets the full version for free any more

I saw that but it sounded very much like a canned answer. And it doesn't really make sense bcuz...
Didn't AT&T promote the fact that QuickOffice came with the phone? That and most of us have had several pre-release versions of Froyo already on our phones and were still able to download it. And finally, AT&T has already paid for my license (as have I by buying the phone). Seems more likely that AT&T forgot to flip a bit somewhere.
Or maybe that's just my own rationalization bcuz I don't want to shell out $10 for it.

Yes at first they did, but the last I heard before I stopped working for them was that with the new batch that came with 2.2 already we were not supposed to say that it came with it, but hey we all know AT&T.

Well I just couldn't live with the busted icon.
So I pulled the Quickoffice.apk out of the /system/app folder and reinstalled it... Now it has it's lovely icon back and still works fine.
Code:
adb pull /system/app/Quickoffice.apk
adb install -r Quickoffice.apk
(the "-r" means reinstall)
you can also get the app out the factoryfs.rfs in this copy of the official froyo update
If you run linux just mount the .rfs (see command below) browse to the /system/app folder in your favorite file navigator and copy the file out. If you don't run linux.... why not?
Code:
sudo mount -o loop factoryfs.rfs /mnt

It's actually in the Cognition 4.1 zip so I assume it came with the leaked ROM. Re-installed it with ADB and all is good again. Thanks.
The response was incorrect. You have 15 minutes to cancel and get a refund, not 24 hours.
Plus, the update broke the icon. They should fix the icon instead of playing the blame game.
My problem isn't just the icon...it appears to be totally gone and I can't redownload it from the market as it is a paid app...how do I get it back?

It is contained in the ZIP of the Cognition 4.1 ROM if that is what you are using. Once you have located the APK in the ZIP, copy it to your PC and then you can reinstall it using ADB from the command line as was suggested earlier:
Code:
adb install -r Quickoffice.apk
You might be better off to do a clean reset with Odin 1 click, and then a clean update to 2.2. I have Cognition 4.1 and my Quickoffice seems to be working fine after the update.
