Changing Start menu nav bar size? - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if it is possible to change the height of the top and bottom navigation bars in WM5. All I managed to find was ways of changing font size/color - either through SK Tools or directly in the registry, but nothing on the size of these two bars.
These bars are so awkwardly thick for a VGA resolution and waste so much screen space (especially when browsing the internet and I don't want to go in full screen mode).
I noticed that OzVGA does make these bars much thinner, but I am guessing it is because it shrinks all screen items.
If these is a way to do this, please just give me the registry items I need to change, I think I will manage.

you can change them using vjtoggletodayiialpha.

you can search it up in the registry after running it and change its parameters..
it's not too useful tho.

Thank you, but this doesn't really work for me.
1. Does not toggle Start / Menu bar - first click hides it, second click does not show it etc.
2. It hides the nav bars, does not make them thinner.
3. Played with the registry and tried changing the values of the classes - nothing...
4. Read (on, skimmed through) all the pages of the thread - no useful info on how to do this myself, without an external application.
So, I assume there is nothing editable in the original registry that does the trick and it takes adding new registry bits to achieve anything. Since, however, I have no idea how to write completely new stuff (changing is OK, that I can do), is it then a desperate situation?
I will appreciate any further ideas (and keep reading the thread to see if anything lies hidden in it...)

Hi,
These bars are files in the *.png format. Only way to have 'm smaller is replace them, but then you'll need to edit other files too...
Dirk

Hi dirlan2001,
I don't think these are .png files. In SK Tools I have Colors Settings and it's all colors, even the gradients, given in number codes.
Also, in:
HKLM¥Software¥Microsoft¥Color
there are only numeric values for colors, no files.
And then, there are no such images in the Windows folder

I use MvRTrueVGA which is a package I put together ages ago for the Dell Axim.
It reduces the top and bottom bars down to only 26 pixels which is the perfect size for me.
It doesn't work perfectly on WM6.1 and WM6.5. But the things that it messes up are only some settings screens and the comm manager app. Which I can live without. Also some apps that are programmed specifically for the QVGA screen sometimes only show in the top right corner of the screen.
Give it a try if you like. The link is in my sig.

hmm, it's half of the original size. nice.

Sorry, what? Do you mean the screenshot? I decreased it slightly (from the original 640x480) because it looked huge, but further decreasing made text blurred and unreadable.
> markvan: Thanks! I tried the MvRTrueVGA ... Makes stuff way too small and I was unable to find a way (in registry?) to increase font size and icon size so that they are clickable (or tap-able). Also, my software keyboard disappeared I could not be started. Also, on screen rotate sometimes the screen went black and fuzzy (like in a TV that's lost signal).
Maybe you can share some knowledge about how to control just the width of the bars, if possible, without any further adjustments?

I was looking for a way to do this on the Treo Pro - I just need a couple of pixels to make all my stuff fit on my today screen....
I will try your software.

Today plugin at BOTTOM of screen?

Is it possible to force a today screen plugin to the bottom of the screen without needing some sort of spacer plugin in between it and other today screen items? I want to have an icon bar across the bottom (easy button access with one hand) but still use things like the calendar that will change size above it on the screen...
Thanks!
No, you can't force a plugin there but you can use an app like VJTrayLaunch to place shortcuts in the tray that is already at the bottom.
Actually you can. There is a free plugin floating around called SPACER. Its actually a today plugin that allows you to put "X" amount of empty space on the today screen. So it may take a few tries to get it perfect, but basically you will just have to configure it one pixel short of it making scrollbars on your today screen to get whatever the desired plugin is to the bottom.
andycormier - I think you missed the point of his question. He specifically asked not for a spacer...
V
Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm after something as lite as possible and skinning everything with WA2/WAD probably isn't what i'm after. The tray unfortunately is utterly useless for using a thumb (holding it one handed) to press buttons, and you can't force large icons there!
Anyone know how things like the HTC tray and FHMTray (i think it's something like that) use the tray area and if it might be possible to modify the tray area to accommodate large icons (or better yet has anyone actually tried to make the tray area useable for a today plugin so you could put anything there - i think there may be a lot of people who'd love something like that!).
Thanks again for the feedback guys.
mikechannon: I've never used Wisbar, it's just not what I need. It's too much. It's perhaps some of the most advanced coding I've seen, but too much for most purposes.
I actually don't recommend VJTrayLaunch for reasons of resource usage - for a few icons, it's fine. For more then 3 icons, I suggest using PHM Tray Launch.
There are other ways to relocate Today plugins - see SideX.

Here relocating the keyboard, but it can relocate today plugins too. Great app!
I know it's not required, but I've also written VJTodaySpacer that does some special voodoo. Unreleased, although one day when VJToggleToday is finished I'll release it.
V
Thanks for the input VJ. I like the concept of sidex - tried it but it's too clunky to use. I'm after something to free us as much usable space as possible with the exception of a nice menu bar. Ideally if i could i'd loose the tray and bottom bar (i know what my softkeys do from the today screen!), and have an iLauncher bar across the very bottom with a set of large icons that would be perfect for thumb presses. Any app that is in use can then have the menu bar back when it's loaded as i won't need the icons there when using something other than the today screen. That way i can have something usable for thumbs and also have a lot of information on the today screen.
I've tried freeing up space with your tool to remove all menu bars too, but it isn't yet a clean interface! Great idea, but i've ended up with things like the top part of the today screen showing while in other programs. If it could be active while on the today screen and nonactive while in programs it'd probably serve the exact function i want - low overhead and clears the useless junk from the today screen.
If i knew how to, i'd attempt it myself but i wouldn't know where to start!
Thanks again.
VJ: I'm just wondering, how difficult is it to get cLaunch to 'move' to the bottom of the screen? cLaunch is a Today plugin and it may not be possible to get a Today plugin to move to the bottom of the screen. While the 'tray' thing is a program itself, hence it is possible for it to move to the bottom of the screen, right? I had the source code downloaded and prepare to be messing with it, once I got the hang of this embedded VC.
Hanmin, moving the plugin is easy enough, but unfortunately the Today screen is compiled from sequentially drawing each Today plugin one after the other. The height of the Today window is calculated from the (reported) height of each Today plugin. So merely moving the Plugin in Win32 won't necessarily allow it to be displayed. It'll just confuse Today.
Using a Today spacer is an easy alternative IMHO.
jdl1306: good idea about only hiding the start bar on the Today screen. It's something that was suggested a long time ago, but I've not worked on the app for quite some time, one or two things to finish first (I've also been unable to program for several months, work)
For the time being, why not hide the tray (dcinobar) and hide just the soft keys using VJToggleToday II? Then, you have a clean interface, just the Start bar showing?

Customizing the Carrier Line

I don't want to hide my Carrier Line, but I would like to customize it to make better use of the space it occupies.
Firstly, I would like to be able to show the date (in a shortened form, although not necessarily the short date format) so I can disable the usual Date plugin.
See the following Photoshopped mock ups:-
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Please note I have specifically placed the date where it is so that it doesn't overlap any of the different carrier or phone status messages that appear on the left.
I have yet to see a short date format that shows the abbreviated day (eg Fri or Wed) then dd-MMM-yy, but that is what I would like to see on my Today screen.
I would then like to use the space between the date and bluetooth icon to add some other icons. One icon that could be handy is one that shows that the hardware ringer switch is set to off (ie on mute). See Photoshopped mock ups below.
Ideally, if the Treo ever includes some sort of phone profiles app in the future (ie different device settings for home, car, work, meeting etc) then another useful icon that could be displayed here is an icon showing the currently selected profile.
Is it possible for any of the above to be developed in a 3rd party app ??
Or do I need to send my suggestions to Palm and hope they put it in a future ROM ?
What is the best way to contact Palm with this sort of request ?

Count Palm out on adding that to the carrier plugin.Im sure it could be added in.How?Im not sure but what a great view.It would save screen space filling that major void within the pluging.
The only way this could be done is to replace the original plugin. I doubt it can be hacked to add all that. I'm sure there are some clevers devs out there (and on this forum) that could whip up a replacement in an hour.
The icon for the ringer switch was more a "nice to have".
All I really want is the DATE in the Carrier Line so that I can remove the standard WM date plugin.
Perhaps I need to have another look at Wisbar Advance 2 and put the date up there somewhere.
I actually like the carrier/bt plug as well, I haven't used WA2 in awhile and decided to try again. Here is how I have it setup for the moment [might get your creative/setup juices flowing ]

I gave WA2 a quick try yesterday for the first time although I wasn't really sure how to use it.
I did manage to get it to display the date and time together, in my preferred format of "Sun 04-Feb", which was good.
However, the other thing I really want on my Taskbar is a decent Battery Meter that shows the % remaining.
My current Today screen looks as follows:-
The app I am using the for the Battery Meter (and clock) is KBattery.
I don't particularly need the battery meter so wide..... I am just running KBattery that way so that it is wide enough to cover the standard battery meter and clock that normally appear side by side.
Can WA2 do a Battery Meter with % remaining figure? If so, then I could ditch KBattery.
I tried running KBattery with WA2, however, KBattery does not give the option to display just the Batter meter without the time..... thus I had two clocks!
I guess the alternative would be to keep using KBattery for the Time and Battery meter, but then use WA2 to display the DATE only - although I couldn't see how to do that in the WA2 configuration settings I was playing with.

FULL SCREEN mode all the time ...

I am looking for advice here, somewhat of a newbie.
I want to run all of WM6 with the top start menu hidden and the bottom menu bar hidden (like full screen mode in IE). When you press a button these bars re-appear.
Does and application or hack like this exist ?

This is an easy one. In IE, tap menu/view/full screen. The top & bottom bars are gone. Tap/hold/full screen on the touch screen to go back.

Oooops, sorry I mis-read the thread. Good ?
Yeah, I am hoping to do this with all of WM6 in general.
I checked into Wisbar but am unconvinced this is the right app.
I'm in the same boat, did you end up figuring something out?
look up vijay555, he has a full screen mod. basically changes the top and bottom bar size. but to go back , you have to go into the program and change the values again. i don't have the know how, but i would think that someone could write a mortscript to run specific values, one for full screen and regular,.
Somebody asked me about this and I've reposted some new screenshots a couple of times today. Have a look here, regarding whether it was possible to make Word and Excel full screen.
I've written VJToggleToday II Alpha, which it surprises me that people are still using as it is so crippled. However, that app will hide the Start Bar and softkeys for most purposes. However, unless you intend to replace the start bar with an alternative, as I've done here:

this can be more of a pain in the butt then just living with the normal start bar (as you have difficulty accessing the start bar, when you remove the start bar, although see VJKeyPress for an alternative route)
In any event, VJToggleToday has been written from the ground up as VJToggleToday IV, but this is unreleased right now. Version IV will not have the above problem - the bars will reappear when you want them to, automatically.
For a more effective solution, VJSihaya is where I'm really going, but that's not released yet [if ever!]. These are some screenshots for that:

And screenshots in Pooh-QVGA on my HTC Touch. I can't wait until VGA is available across the board, VJSihaya looks a damn sight better in VGA and beyond.
And just one more because I love this girl!
V
PS It might not be apparent, but those are native screenshots. VJSihaya will remove the soft keys and relocate their functionality to a menu available when clicking the icon (top left of each window). VJToggleToday IV Redux is being used to hide the native start bar (at the top). The start menu continues to be accessible from VJSihaya's icons when it is otherwise hidden.

Have you thought of a bar like the Mac has at the bottom that reappears when you move closer to the bottom of the screen? I know we don't have a mouse movement but what if we run the stylus near the bottom of the screen?
Entirely possible, but for what purpose? For the soft keys or the start bar?
VJToggleToday IV hides the star bar completely or almost completely, optionally, but only on the Today screen. When you click away to another app, the start bar is there in its ugly ass normal position, optionally. I generally keep it hidden and replaced, as in my screen shot above.
The soft keys are typically intergral to use of most apps, so in the current incarnation of Windows Mobile, you shouldn't really hide them completely, so VJToggleToday IV gives you the option to do so, but it's generally not advised, except on the Today screen.
However, future versions of something like VJToggleToday will have a much more invasive cosmetic re-jigging of the standard Windows Mobile interface, to get rid of start bars and soft keys for a much better integrated solution.

For me it would be for all the shortcuts to applications, instead of cubes turning, and once it is visible, it could scroll sideways with arrows on each end. (an animated start bar I guess...)

[SOLVED] Mobile pages doesn't fit the screen in Opera (9.7/10b2)

Hi guys,
Got an annoying problem with my Opera. Everytime when I'm loading special mobile-webpages such as m.spiegel.de, wap.bild.de, or m.espn.go.com these do not fit my screen and it is not possible to zoom out to make it fit:

Ticking mobile-mode diesn't help me out (and I also don't want it because I'm briwsking non-mobile websites (like XDA) also and that looks quite crappy in mobile mode. I also changed my UA in the registry to the one of Touch HD.
The pictures and also the written parts are always too broad for the resolution.
Do you all have the same problem? I'm using German 1.48 stock ROM. If you don't have the problem, how can I solve it for me?
Big THX in advance!!
Did you try Internet Explorer?
I like Opera a lot, but on mobile web pages it sometimes looks weird. On touch.facebook.com it doesn't always shows the space between sentences. Same on my Nokia N86, i prefer using the native Symbian browser when visiting m.something.com pages, rather than using Opera
Hi. Yes, you're right. They fit the screen perfectly in IEmobile. Good to know. But I'm still asking myself, why can't Opera do that?
Doesn't anybody else have that problem as well? Does nobody browse mobile-pages with HD2? Pleease help!!
I honestly don't know.
I like to nag opera with such issues
Good news: I solved the problem by myself!
The reason for the crappy displaying of mobile websites in Opera are the default Opera-settings by HTC...
For anybody who's interested - here's a step by step guide to change these settings:
1. Open Opera Mobile
2. Type opera:config into the adress-bar
3. Click the point "Adaptive Zoom"
4. Change the values to the following:
I guess that the only point that's really important causing my problem is the "Default Zoom" - by HTC it was 175% I think - 100% fit waay better into the screen...
5. Click "Save" right below the "Adaptive Zoom"-settings.
6. Restart Opera.
7. Because of the big WVGA-resolution it may be useful to go now into regular settings on the bottom right and tick the option for biggest font-size as possible...
8. DONE. After this procedure the pages (same as I capped in the initial post) look as they're meant to be - like that:
Hope that I could myybe help someone with the same problem like I had - as XDA helped me approximately for 1000 times.
Cheers.
Hi, this is exactly what I am fightning with....
In Opera, when I look at the adaptive zoom, set it to 100 (like you) it WILL not resize the browser window??
I cannot make it zoom so it will fit full screen widht?
I put in the same numbers like you - it still too wide. After changing the numbers, the screen where you type in font sizes gets VERY small?
Am I doing something wrong?
Helle
Don't know what causes your problem. With my configuration e.g. the normal settings-section in Opera gets quite small as well, but I guess that's because of the browser is not written for such a big resolution. What you can do is changing the font size. First in normal settings under "display" (don't know the exact name because I'm using a German device - take it analogously) - choose the biggest option for the font size; second you can edit the font sizes also in the aboutpera-area. I suggest just some experimenting (I realized, that when I tick lots of settings to default (not HTC's default) - it gets looking better and better - HTC just messed up the settings obviously...). You can after these experiments easily undo them, so feel free to test.
hmm strange, I cleared out the cashe, but that did not help either. Tried to set the default zoom to 90% - nada, does not respond ?
It is amazing that the phone company does not make default issues MUCH easier to config....
Can't figure it out ... evv

IDEA : 4x4 level and tilt meter

If anyone out there wants an app idea.
Using the g sensor on the HD2 display two views of a 4wd.
One view (Top) is a rear view showing tilt left to right.
The second (Bottom) shows a side view showing its tilt front to back.
Requirements maybe skinnable and also a reset/zero button to compensate for mounting.
Basically as your driving the images rotate to show what angle and slope you are driving on.
That would be a cool app...

Well,actually this would be not a problem.
Development modifications are minor to make it portrait,but there is lot of work with graphics. Therefore I have to wait a long time for the graphics from my designer.

Well,it seems to have some memory problem. I see this kind of problem during development first version. The rotation pictures are stored separately in 162 position images in one bitmap. This bitmap is quiet large with dimensions 1250x2125. 125x125 pixels per one image,10x16+1x2 in matrix. 125sq is also reason,that the image is not VGA sharp. If I tried to have 250x250pix images,the bitmap was so huge,that cannot load into the memory and I had same problem. What's your free memory? Tried softreset before starting?
I also have the same issue.
No pretty Lada.
Hello.
So I have replaced resources,so this is much smaller rotation image to fit into memory.

Please note,actually this is not a cab,but exefile with renamed extension.

did you renamed the extension to exe?
Sorry for that,but I cannot upload larger exefiles,XDA server doesn't allow it.

Ok,it's really an exe file,i convert it to a cab file .
