Stop automatic camera off (cam run in background) via registry? - General Questions and Answers

I have been trying to figure this out for like 2 years. I just want to be able to record video in the background. I am running Mobile 6.1 on an HTC S720. I have tried the latest coolcamera (it just starts and immediately shuts off). I have searched EVERYWHERE. It would seem that the program built into the phone could potentially keep recording if the trigger to stop recording once the program was exited was turned off.
Is there a known registry modification (or any modification) to make the camera program stay always recording?
Is there any other software people have had luck with other then coolcamera?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even a link or keyword, anything is helpful at this point. This really seems like it should be easier then it is (or hopefully isn't).

Hi,
Guess you'll need to find a way to minimize (or hide) the UI of your camera. I tried recording a video and then pressed the Win-button on my keyboard to get into the startmenu, but it just stopped recording. Looks like the cam takes over the phone completely.
Besides, if you want the phone to keep recording, you'll need a very BIG storagecard (19s vid = 2.8 MB on my phone) and an even BIGGER battery.
Dirk

Ya I have a 4 gig card in it. The camera program stays on because I can still see it in the process menu. I specifically want this for altercations with police whether in my car or on the street. I would like to start recording then lock the phone. I have had my phone recording while dealing with a cop and he saw the camera and his attitude changed. I'd rather them not know I am recording, and not be able to access the phone at the same time. I understand they could just pop out the card, but lengthwise I could pop out the card and slip it into my sock if they confiscate the phone. The phone can handle about 45 mins of straight recording so battery life shouldn't be an issue, plus it stays plugged in while in my car.
Thanks for the input as any is welcomed.

So, why you need videorecording then ? Guess it'll be easier and faster to just start your voicerecorder with your phone in one of your pockets...

Oh man, my X1 also cannot use Cool Camera either, And the default camera program can't been minimize....., I know that asus P565 default one could do so....looking for that program

Screen Brightness hack?

hi guys,
just got my Dopod 838 pro(TyTN)...and I love it. however I notice the screen brightness is not as bright as my o2 atom. even with the brightness turned all the way up in the settings. however I noticed that when I press the camera button the screen brightness increases for a second (to the same as my atom). but the when I close the camera the screen dims back again. seeing this lets me know that the screen does have the capabilities to be turned brighter then is allowed through the settings. does anyone know a reg hack or a trick so that I can turn the screen brightness up? does everyone else notice that the screen brightness goes up when the camera button is pressed? or is this a hardware issue? thanks for the help guys!
I've not tried it on Hermes, but VJLumos II takes advantage of the extra brightness that occurs when the camera is enabled, to make a super brite screen. This works on the Magician, and can be enabled on the Universal but not disabled until soft reset (I've not been motivated to finish writing the Universal's version.)
If the Hermes exhibits this same characteristic, VJLumos II might work on it. Give it a go and let me know.
V
Hi Vijay555 yeah i was actually on your site and ive heard alot about VJLumos II. But I thought it was only compatible with the Magician. Do you think there is any risk of it Hard resteting my 838pro(Hermes)? Anything else i should know before installing it? Does it work 100% correct on the magician? Please let me know!
Thanks!
Works 100% on the Magician, and the active part works on the Universal.
Basically it mimicks the camera and causes it to be activated, causing the extra brightness.
I can't guarantee 100%, but say 99% that it can't hardreset your device (without having the device in front of me I can't say...)
It'll either work or not work, it shouldn't interact with anything else.
I'd be interested to get a Hermes rom dump at some point to see what it's like. It's a great piece of hardware, I'm wondering how to get one now I've jumped ship to the Mio!
V
yeah the hermes is great. Ok well i guess i will be the guinea pig and test it out on my device...haha i hope nothing happens. Ill install it in a few hours and let you know what happens. If i need to remove it will it just uninstall?
By the way is the a reg hack that can do this also?
There's no registry setting I know of that will do this, but there might well be; however, as I said, VJLumos does this by interacting with the hardware in an unexpected way, so it's unlikely to be replicated in the registry.
I think you can run VJLumos in stand alond mode, without installing (which will cause it to be enabled every time you switch on). Just run it in stand alone mode to test it out.
V
Hi all,
I'll also try with Wizard, should I or not?
Any effect on battery life. I mean is it more than max of hardware brightness

Hi Vijay, what do you mean run it in stand alone mode?
fordcan: I'm sure that it doesn't work on the Wizard, if it did then I would have written VJCandela for it as well. Not right now, and not until I get a wizard in my hands (all you new Hermes guys, if you find yourself with a spare Wizard, I can give it a good home!)
phame: if you just double click on the VJLumosII icon, it'll enable superbrite once. If you click on the -install icon it will try to enable it every run.
Like I said, it's not written fully for WM5 yet, because I never used my Universal as my main phone, and frankly the screen was bright enough. The magician benefited from it, but hopefully any HTC phone that exhibits the curious camera loading/screen brighter thing might benefit from it.
However, for now, as I said, it's not fully debugged for WM5. But test it, and if it works, I'll try to make some time to fix it. The problem is that it will only work the first time, not every time you run it. Hopefully easily fixable.. But it won't do any damage.
I presume it will drain the battery faster, since screen is brighter, but if you use it in bursts or recharge daily, it shouldn't be an issue. I never used my Magician without it, and it was fine after 1 year.

thanx for the reply,
I a bit confused; you are telling "doesn't work on Wizard" and at the same time "any HTC phone that exhibits the curious camera loading/screen brighter thing might benefit from it " Wizard got this..
curiosity kill the cat  Better try and see issue
fordcan:
Sorry, it might benefit from the technique, not necessarily this version.
Like VJCandela, I have to have a Wizard in my hands to experiment with the camera driver. It'll be easy to write once I've got the device in my hands, but I can't test it.
It shouldn't do any harm, since it'll probably just not be able to find the correct camera driver on the Wizard. But give it a go and tell me if it does anything.
I never knew that the Wizard has this screen brightening effect
V
Absolutely not working.. tells; "Can't load Superbrite Libraries!"
Anyway "Trying times are no time to quit trying"
Ok i downloaded the cab file, copied it to my memory card and executed the file. And it worked perfectly instantly the screen brightness went up. And it didnt seem to be causing any type of slow down or problems.
When i click the camera button i just get an error message which sais "the camera app is already in use". But luckliy no soft reset.
However i couldnt find how to turn it off. It doesnt show up in the list of "running programs"
so far the way i launched it was by just clicking in the icon. Can you please tell me how to do the "-install" thing you were talking about?
and how do i shut it off if i want to use th camera? At the moment i can only do a soft reset for it to turn off.
Thanks!
You should have a bunch of shorcuts installed in yor startmenu.
Launching VJLumosII with parameters -off will disable it, clicking -install will install it so it's run every time it's switched on.
However, I've not tested the -install option on WM5 so let me know if it works appopriately. I'll get around to reweriting it eventually.
V
i tried clicking the short cut to shut it off. But i get an error message saying something about the application being corrupt. So to diable it i still have to soft reset. Im scared to install the app in fears that the remove shortcut may not work
Also ive noticed the battery drains about 30% faster with the app running.
any ideas?
As I've said, it only half works on anything other then the Magician. I'll fix it sometime as a priority - I just got a Hermes, and have to say that the screen is a bit "meh", not as bright as a Mio 701 or Magician. Washed out colours and poorer viewing angle. Superbrite is necessary, not optional
V
I've just switched from a Prophet to Magician. Couldn't stand the slowness of WM5, especially with some big database software I use. The only thing I miss is the Prophet's screen brightness (OK, battery life was great too) so I was really pleased to find vjlumosII. The only downside I've run into is that it adds about 3 seconds to the power up time when I press the power button on my Jam. I've not seen this mentioned elsewhere. Is this a normal effect of the software?
Do you see the slowness on the Magician or the Prophet?
On my Magician I never noticed it.
I just wrote a new kinda app yesterday for low level hacking, and will see if I can apply this to VJLumos. Hopefully some new ish updates coming soon - however, I am using my time well I hope. I'm writing a new website, hence the slow progress on programming.

Vijay,
I've only used vjlumosII on the Magician. The Prophet is the first PDA/phone with a screen that was as bright as I'd want, so I never tried vjlumosII on it.
The delay on my JAM (the 128MB RAM version) is not subtle. It takes a full 3 sec for the phone to come on after you press the power button. The same thing happens if you push any other button to turn on the phone. There doesn't seem to be any delay in the phone coming on if it is awakened by recieving an incoming call. When I turn off vjlumosII the power up delay disappears.
Also the screen brightness initially doesn't come on at maximum. It takes another 2 seconds to boost up.
Thanks.

Turning off autofocus

Anyone know of a tweak for this? On my sprint TP it is automatically turned off if I take picture while on a phone call, so there must be an option somewhere to turn it off for good.
i would really like to know this as well

Strange that it gets turned off during a phone call. Can anyone else confirm this?
yeah i tried it during a call and it does get turned off during a call.
i want to turn it off because the autofocus takes so long. especially when i need to snap those quick pictures...
Same here, no autofocus during a phone call... I'm using original ROM.
I'm very interested too in a solution for that strange behavior.
I would like to know how to turn it off as well because it takes too long to snap the shot! Would be great if there was an option to turn it on or off!
May no be EXACTLY what you're looking for, but go in to camera->settings->advanced and on page 3, there's a Shoot Option. Change this to Full Press, and no more AF.

I have it at Full Press, but that still is auto focus. As soon as you hit it, you will see the camera try to focus on what ever you're trying to shoot before it actually takes the photo.
I too am curious as to how to turn it off.
there's gotta be like a registry tweak????? someone? anyone? haha

Even i m in dire need of this tweak........sometimes its impossible to get a good snap, bcos of the delay caused by auto focus.......
i was using UIQ 3 phone earlier, where a half press would lock the focus and full press will immediately click snap without a delay.....
can someone make sum tweal on similar lines
please someone. haha

Anyone help !!!!!!!!!

This is very odd. I guess that even HTC knew that the camera program was either not optimized or demanded to much resource so they cut off the autofocus mid call.
From my own experience, its really hard trying to figure out the system calls coming form the dialer, i dont think this is going to be an easy fix.
Bump!

it would be nice if someone could do this? i would donate happily )
also id really like a auto lfash - which i think is in development
but this is a good idea as i agree it takes so long to focus that you hardly ever get a good shot
I'm interested in this. Have missed many pics due to the focus being so slow!
why does nobody want to reply to thread with an answer? strange seeing as there is so much demand
I use AutoFocus and have no delay in taking a picture.
If you have a delay in taking a photo just change the settings using the Advanced Configuration Tool. Under the camera options, capture delay should be disabled, key delay disabled and capture key delay set to zero.
Also, try this:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Camera/Captparam/
and set
CaptureTimer = 0 (old=5000)
Two more things to do - go into the camera advanced settings (in the camera itself) and turn off the click sounds and set the review time to no limit. With those changes above I think I have a working camera here...
While we're at it, if your photos are yellow change the white balance settings: http://www.fuzemobility.com/?p=951

Fuze Questions

I'm an iPhone 2g user looking to upgrade. I had a Tilt that I had to return because of some soft-reset bug it had. I called HTC and they said it was hardware related, so I sent it back for the iPhone.
I love my iPhone. It does everything I need it to do very well. I love safari (although flash would be nice), I love the Music player, and I love the quickness of the interface. That being said, however, I'm a pharmacy student, and I need certain software for class and internships. The iPhone does have epocrates, but it's limited in what it can do...
I played with the Fuze today, but it couldn't connect to the network (The employee told me the manager messed something up???) I didn't get to try out some of the key features I wanted to.
Some questions I have:
1: Touchflow. when is started using the phone, touchflow was SLOOOW. I was able to pan my way over the the Photos tab, but once there, there was no more scrolling. I could tap icons to move to the next menu, but it was very very sluggish??? I found there were a couple of programs running in the background, and once I closed them out, it was responsive again. But, how many programs can be running before it is unusable???
2: Touch screen: The touch screen had some selective response at times. I noticed that when using the stylus, it sometimes didn't pick up my input. This was especially evident in the upper right portion of the screen (when I wanted to X out of programs). Is this a common issue, or is it something wrong with the device? Or is it just me not knowing how to use a stylus?!
3: Hardware question: I wasn't able to make, or even pretend to make a call because it couldn't connect to the network, and because it had the security wires on it. But, how usable is the volume rocker switch mid-call? are there issues using it because of the sliding keyboard? Also, is there a proximity sensor on the phone, to dim the screen in a call???
4: SMS/MMS: The 2nd main reason I'm considering the fuze over the iphone 3g is the MMS. Anybody have any pictures or description of how the Text messages are handled by the fuze? I'm not familiar with how windows mobile manages them!
5: Email: I'm no power email user, but I do read them on the road. How does WM6 handle emails???? I have a gmail account...
6: Opera: I've heard good things about the browser, but again, no network = no opera use. how is opera? Does it support flash?
7: Malware??? Are windows phones prone to malware???
8: One handed operation? I love how the iPhone is mostly 1 handed. I take the trolly to school daily, and sometimes i only have 1 hand free. does touchflow allow me to operate the phone completely 1 handed??? Can I type up a text message using the screen and no stylus???
9: Media player: Will I need to buy a new iPod to listen to my media? Or does the Fuze's onboard stuff allow me to play my music well enough???
10: FM radio? The Sony Xperia has an onboard FM radio program. Is this something the HTC can do as well???
I have more questions as well, but I'll start with this. Thanks for all your help!

Need to flash a cooked ROM. All the ROMs I've tried so far has better response time for Touchflow and actually makes it usable. I would say this is just the stock ROM with all the bloated "stuff" making it unusable.

The screen can be dimmed while in a call or you can disable it. The volume keys at the side works well... don't use them much.

You can use it 1 handed but not sure coming from the iPhone how it would compare.
The best thing I can recommend to you is to order the Fuze and test it out. You have 30 days to return it. If you don't like it and it doesn't meet your requirements then no need to keep it. I don't have any experience with the iPhone so I can't offer you any comparison. I had the Tilt before and liked it a lot. I had it to a point where it did everything I needed and VERY quickly. I also have the Fuze setup the same way and I'm happy with it.
Good luck.
9) Yes, handles media well. You can get 16GB memory card for about $30 to have as much storage as your old iPhone (and no need to mess with ITunes). The only gripe about media I have is that the unit doesn't have a 3.5 audio jack (though it comes with an adapter)
10) The stock FUZE rom doesn't have the radio app, but it's an easy .cab to find. The headphones have to be connected for radio to work, as it uses the headphones as an antenna
stevieraveon...you've found a 16gb microsd for $30? If this is true, and you're not confusing it with regular SD, i'm sure myself and several others on the forum would love to know where!
Fuze Complaints?
I was curious as to what to expect before ordering my Fuze.
What kinds of issues / complaints are Fuze/Raphael users having???
(For example, on my Tilt, there was a soft-reset issue. On my iPhone 2g, there's a sub-par earpiece speaker, recessed headphone jack, no copy/paste/MMS, etc).
Questions for fuze owners
2 Questions:
1: Music: Is there a way to skip songs while the phone is in "standby mode" (or whatever the blacked out screen shows)? On my iPhone 2g, I can either use the headphone's mic as a button, or I can double click the main button, and guestimate where the Skip forward button would appear on the touchscreen. (Both tricky things to do when walking)...
2: Syncing: How many computers can you sync a windows mobile device with? My main computing machine is a Mac, which I love. However, I'm aware I may need to use a PC for syncing some things (like software). Can I have the phone sync to two machines? (The iPhone only likes one...)
I really have no complaints about the Fuze other than the stock at&t ROM. If you really wanna enjoy your phone, your gonna have to flash a cooked ROM; the AT&T one is just way to slow to use. Besides that the phone is great. You MAY have problems with the GPS, but if you do flash the .28 radio you should be fine.
Hope that helps
being able to control music while in standbye depends on whether you use third party software or not. i use conduits pocket player and it allows control via headset and avrcp while in standby.
you can sync the device with two comps at the same time so you should be fine

i used to have an old desktop that i used as a media center with all my mp3s on there
so i used to sync everything on my laptop, contacts, calender... but on my desktop when i setup my device with active sync, i olny chose to sync music.
now on the fuze has an extra option, i believe you can connect the fuze to any pc or mac and have it show up as a mass storage device!!! like a flash drive, so u dont need any software (activesyc, iTunes) or any drivers to transfer files!!! (very office friendly)
the phone has some issues, but i think all of them have been addressed, including new 3d drivers!
look around here, this is why we have this website ( to solve problems)

I realize it's to fix problems, and I'm aware all phones (or electronics for that matter) are prone to issues. I was kind of hoping, though, that people would chime in and make a list of the biggest known issues with the Fuze.
For example, I heard rumors that fresh out of the package, there's an issue with the speaker being too quiet.

Can anybody confirm this???!!! In my eyes this would make the media app on the fuze more powerful than my iPhone.
I frequently skip through songs, but having the lack of buttons on the iPhone means I need to reach for my neck, to use the headphone button...take the phone out of my pocket (not good in the rain...).... or double click the home button in my pocket, and tap around on the screen until i discover the SKIP button...
Also, while you're confirming the D-pad, can you tell me if the volume toggle works to manage the music volume as well??? (For directly connected headphones (Wired) or bluetooth headphones (Wireless))

1. For just using the phone, in Windows Media, in it's settings>buttons there is a toggle screen (I set it to hold left since I don't use previous) and I can use all the buttons after I toggle screen (Turns screen off).
2. For wired and wireless headsets, do the same as #1 or buy a headset that has music buttons and is an A2DP headset, those can change songs and volume and everything even when the pphone is in standby.
Syncing with multiple computers is no problem, but you can only sync mail/outlook with one computer. Had a WM device synched with with 3 machines before. Active sync will have different profiles/names to each computer you sync it with. Not sure what the limit is.
Syncing with exchange server is pretty awesome though. Too bad my companies security cert expired though... active sync doesn't like that. Need to have net admin get that updated cert
as for music I have an a2dp stereo bluetooth headset with controls and it works great, with the screen on or off. It does cause the youtube app to lag though, not sure why...
Well autocorrect/autocomplete seems to be broken but this is prolly rom related. Still looking for a way to nix out that xt9 junk... voice command also seems to be partially broken, but again rom/software related.
I miss having a tab button on the keyboard seems to be the only key/button that I really miss having, it was nice having a mail button but mail is easy enough to get to with TF3d. Left and right on the dpad seem to have a sweet spot.
Of course it is a fingerprint disaster, really wish that the back wasn't glossy it looks great when its clean.
All in all no major complaints.

I think the D-Pad or whatever you refer to the directional controls at the bottom of the Fuze only reliably work for up and down. Left seems to work better for me than right (probably because I'm right handed). But overall, using the D-Pad is irritating.
Trying to use the D-Pad around the middle button for playing games sucks.
Also, with some older apps, I'm running into a situation where if I switch from the old app (for example, PocketAtari) to the main screen TF3D or accidently hit the key that brings up the main screen, I can't switch back to pocketatari, and I can't really use the main screen either, it's like they switch back and forth and I can't really get either application to become the focus or active window.
Anyway, as usual, the stock ROM with the FUZE is meh. Best bet is to replace it with either the NATF ROM or romeos. I'm using romeos 1.40.1 right now, looking to flash to 1.50 when that stabilizes.
overall, I miss my tilt in a lot of ways. Even the gimmicky tilt feature is better to have than not to have. The bottom buttons on the front of the kaiser/tilt are way better in my opinion that those on the Fuze.
I don't understand what HTC was thinking. Change to a VGA screen and add a G-Sensor to the kaiser, and you've got a sweet device. Oh and use the newer MSM7200 series chip running at 528MHz and keep that FM radio feature turned on too... pretty sweet kaiser/tilt that would be. Keep it simple, stick to what worked...
To sum up:
D-Pad: crap. only good for up and down. not good for games.
MicroSD slot requires taking the back plate off to access. Not a huge deal, but I liked the kaiser's little cover at the bottom.
Fingerprints- yeah. get a screenprotector for sure. even with a protector, fingerprints all over the device (not just screen).
It slides the other way (for those of you with 8525s I guess it slides the "right" way?) Personally I like the kaiser slide direction and am used to it.
the cool:
it's faster than the kaiser. seems noticably faster than the kaiser when compared side by side. (both using custom roms)
video with you-tube pretty cool, smooth.
G-sensor is sorta neat, not always that responsive, but the Teeter game is great in my opinion. lotta people find it really addicting for awhile.
hTorch is awesome. the LED light on the FUZE/Touch Pro is really actually very useful with that hTorch app.
battery life is meh. Kaiser seemed better and seemed like it has a bigger battery, the battery on the fuze is freaking tiny.
True VGA screen is probably the main reason I went with the fuze... it's better than QVGA.
Hope that helps.
At least you know what you are getting into. It's the next step in the evoluton of HTC/Windows Mobile devices.
When I turn the screen off on my Pro it shuts the music off for some reason!? Any clues how to change this?
As an aside question: If you reflash to somebody else's rom, Is it possible to go back to the factory rom easily???
I'm just a little wary about modifying something to that extent! I don't have the $$$ to replace it if I brick it!
Off the bat, plan on running HardSPL and getting a new ROM. I'd suggest going with the one in my sig. If you start from scratch, you will like the phone a lot more. It is stable and awesome without TouchBlo. It SUCKS with TouchBlo.
Other than that, it's a fingerprint magnet. You can revert to factory SPL and ROM easily.
The Fuze's D-Pad sucks. If you liked to play emulators on your Tilt, you might as well get the Fuse on a second line and keep it around as a Game Boy, or get used to watching movies on your phone instead.
This thread has some good, honest feeback: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446520
Fundamental flaw - TF3D couldn't mask WM's 'touch unfriendliness' heh... WM just depends on the stylus too much to get the job done, in it's current iteration.

HTC Sensation camera & camcorder issues after OTA update

So hello, my first thread here and I wasn't expecting it to be a negative one
I have had my Sensation since it was released in the US for T-Mobile. I have been pretty happy with it, takes great pictures, videos, quick processor etc...well after this so called "update", everytime I use the camera or camcorder option, the phone's screen wants to timeout...you know, it dims after whatever time you have preset and then it locks the screen. Well it never did that before when I was taking pictures or videos so if this is a way to "save" battery life, then someone is not thinking before they act. There is nothing more frustrating than taking a video and in the middle of it the screen darkens and 2 seconds later it locks and turns the video off. Sure you can touch the screen with your other hand but: 1) Creates a shakier video trying to touch the screen while you are filming and 2) You don't always have an empty hand...
I really hope there is a fix for this..
Similar issue with camera & camcorder
I am also having a similar issue with the camera & camcorder apps. After performing OTA update, they gave me a black screen. I rebooted to see if that would help, but now the apps just open for a second with a black screen and white icon and then shut down immediately. I'm going to try factory reset and see if it helps. I've read in other forums that it's a bug with the shutter and the phones were returned. Will post my results here.
Camera issues...part deux

Well, no dice. After doing factory restore and deleting a bunch of apps I still get the same trouble with the camera/camcorder. I've got insurance on it and an old HTC HD2 (rooted and running Froyo) that I'm becoming very fond of, so I'll be returning this phone but I would like to know what the issue is.
I am sorry you are facing the issue but i just checked and my camera is working fine for me as of now at the OTA update

Looking for Some Specialised Video Recording Software

Since we have so very many idiots on our roads these days, I'm looking for some software that will allow me to use either my Android phone or tablet mounted on the dashboard as a sort of "in car camera" while I'm driving. I do realise I could simply use any standard camera software for this, but I'm wondering if there's perhaps something a bit more specialised out there that would handle this better. Out of all the possibilities, I'd say the most important feature would be a sort of buffered recording with an option to save the video afterwards.
This is how the scenario plays out in my mind:
Mount the device (phone or tablet) in the car holder
Tap a shortcut / widget on my homescreen to start recording (without needing to launch an app first)
Drive, drive, drive...
When I stop the recording, be presented with a "save video" prompt
End of story.
Beyond the manual initialisation idea, something that could trigger automatically (when the current speed goes over a set speed for example), run a quick analysis of the current video stream, then automatically start recording if the camera isn't seeing black (in a pocket) or a static video feed (in a cubby hole or lying on a seat), followed by an automatic "save video" prompt once I've stopped for more than a minute would be really nifty.. That might be a bit over the top though (or an opportunity for some creative developer to fill a void in the software world), who knows.
Obviously I wouldn't expect to get these sort of features for nothing, so either free or paid apps would be up for consideration. I've been searching Play Store and the 'net in general, but all I ever seem to find is straight up camera replacement software or the all too common "spy cam" software, neither of which do quite what I need... Anybody know of something like this for Android?
How long do your trips take, I dont know if a cell phone can record video for hours in a row without overheating.
