newbie please help with activation - G1 Android Development

Hi,
I don't have a data plan but I was able to activate the phone for a single day using my sisters t-mobile sim with the $20 internet plan. It worked for just one day and hasn't been able to connect since. In the short time that it was activated I was able to installed the latest custom firmware RC33 by JF. I think it has telnet at recovery. I have no idea how to use the telnet feature from recovery mode but can someone tell me how to access to the 127.0.0.1. I the read tutorial by JF on how to activate the phone without a sim or data using adb and telnet so my plan was to connect to the phone using telnet from recovery mode and using the disable setup code or enable wifi code. I already tried connecting the phone to my computer but adb could not find the device. Can someone help me please .

You need to install the drivers in order to use ADB. The information is there

We're not mind-readers; If you want clear answers you need to word the request clearly.
- If you successfully activated the phone then it should no longer give you the login screen. Are you getting the login screen again or is it some other issue?
- What do you mean by "it worked for just one day?" What worked?
- Are you yourself on T-Mo or not? Do you have a sim card inserted?
- Are you trying to access the inet via wifi or do you have a dataplan with another provider?
- You should know that if you cannot get adb to work then all this is for naught. You probably don't have the adb drivers installed.
Imo since you obviously didn't have the technical capability to understand the rather complex directions in JF's thread, the best course of action is to just go and get a T-Mo dataplan. It'll save you and this subforum a lot of headache.

I have t-mobile pay-as-you-go, I used my sisters sim to get past the welcome screen because she has the $20 internet plan with t-mobile. After it was past the welcome screen I inserted my sim card and the phone didn't show the welcome screen again. However when I powered off the phone and powered it back on and the welcome screen was back. I again inserted my sisters sim card but this time it wouldn't connect to t-mobile. I tired various APN settings. So the phone is not activated. I keep getting the login screen. I am not sure what you mean by adb drivers installed? Do you mean on my phone? How can I tell? I have the android USB drivers installed on my PC. I am truly very sorry jashsu if I am wasting your time. I hope someone who doesn't mind helping a newbie can help me. I can't afford the data plan with t-mobile. My only option is to sell the phone. Thank you.

If you mean the usb drivers, I did install them.

i would suggest downgrading to rc29 again using your sisters sim with her data plan then sign in re-root then go into settings turn off all the google syncs then using your sim. although it is kinda pointless seeings how this is a data rich phone and unless you constantly have a wifi connection there would be no point in having this phone. but hey what do i know im still an above average newb ... no expert at all

For any of this to work, you have to the the ADB working, or Android Debug Bridge. You can search around on the forum, or go to android.google.com and follow the instructions for setting up the development environment.
But if you are just going to be using the phone for music, photos, gps and so forth, there really are much better phones for that purpose.

I read this over at tmonews...
"While playing with my G today, I found a way to enter "safe mode" which will bypass the initial gmail signin and allow you to straight to the good stuff with out activating via google. You can also bypass the security drawing pattern.
1. Power off your device
2. While device is powering back on press and hold the "menu" key, keep holding it past the G1 and android splash screen.
Phone will boot all the way to the main screen and display "safe mode" in lower left corner.
I have confirmed that data is still fully operational and all of my downloaded programs."
Very interesting

How about a ROM DUMP?
I think there's already a thread or two about that.
im sorry to say this but the safe mode does not allow to bypass the initial activation screen but it sure does bypass the security screen

Correct I already posted about this. You still have to activate service with Tmobile and Google. Safe mode on the phone is just like on a regular computer help you fix issues.

i have been google searching for two hours and i have yet to find how to put commands into the g1 i got the drivers and everything and its recoginzed by my comp but i dont know where i type adb shell uninstall or w/e can you direct me in the right direction?
you need to download the SDK from google. You should see some threads with the SDK or the Emulater... it is all the same. adb is in the tools thread. Ohh and you need to enter "adb -d uninstall (name of apk)"

Major Google G1 problem!

Hello, recently I bought a Google g1 phone (used)... It was working perfectly until i tried to access wifi, it began to tell me wifi is unable to enable. So I began to read some threads online and one thread said that the wifi may begin to start working if you are to restart the phone from its factory defaults... SO I did and it was probably the most idiotic decision in my life because now it is asking me to enter in my account info for my Google account, oh and I forgot to mention... I am NOT in the United States, meaning I dont have any form of a data plan and am using a prepaid sim card, so I can't bypass this dreadful login screen . I am been looking through these forums and have found a link leading to a thread where it explains how you can bypass the registration page BUT there is one problem, my phone is not an RC29 model nor a modded RC30 but a LEGIT RC30! I've tried using the <enter>reboot<enter> command and it is not rebooting . So i am thinking I am going to have to find some way of flashing back to an RC29 but I have no clue as where to begin :'(... I really want to get this issue resolved, it is driving me crazy and i've only had this phone for 1 day! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, please just tell me how to flash this phone back to RC29 and that would be amazing!
what about rooting your G1 and porting super d rom. it will help bypass the sign in problem
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
ok well see the problem is I have no idea of how to do any of that... I have even tried connecting the phone to my pc and nothing is coming up on the screen about mounting the phone to my computer! Is this normal? Anyways, so what do you mean by rooting my g1; if i cant access the g1 through my computer can i get into the micro simcard directly (as in use a microsd adapter and connect it via usb) and install the terminal or what ever is used to flash the g1 back to RC29... If so that method would work wonders! Please reply with an answer... and again THANK YOU SO MUCH for your time!
You can customize the APN settings before logging in to Google. Just hit the menu key on the screen where you login (I think, it's been a while). You will need your APN info for your prepaid carrier though.

[Q] Help a noob learn to beat the system?

AT&T Developer Program has sent me a new HTC Aria (HTC Intruder).
I've never had a SmartPhone. Imagine that. But I am a web developer with reasonable skills in that context and want to start deploying to mobile devices.
The device has no SIM and doesn't really do anything. So I have to learn if it is possible to get a SIM, have it configured somehow so I can use the phone --only-- at WiFi spots so I do not have to buy a voice and data plan --or-- hopefully other developers can recommend strategy and tactics to help me get this phone operable so I can at least install my own HTML5 apps and test viewing them and such.

You don't need a sim card to use Voip, wifi or apps...
You dont need a SIM card to use wifi, apps, or things like that. Why you say that what message the smartphones gives to you ?
I also dont think u need any wifi to use developer mode on the phone for apps...if you hit setting and hit apps you will see development

If you root the device, you can (backup first!) delete the contents of the /efs folder. This will scrub the IMEI of your device, and it will revert to an unbranded "generic" IMEI instead. Once you have done this, you can simply use an AT&T GoPhone SIM card on it without issue.

Carrier splash screen loads then displays "No SIM card in Phone" with red ! warning icon and asks Please inseart a SIM card but I now get into settings tonight (wierd).
I think I have to try WiFi in a coffee shop or try some "official" WiFi hotspot for ATT to determine if the carrier imposes using their WiFi and only their WiFi.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

What? Wi-fi is wi-fi. The carriers do not make you use "their" wi-fi. You want to develop, but you are having problems with the very very basics here.

Yea I know I said that right out I am a noob "in this context." I have no idea how the carriers have or have not modified Android to maintain control of the devices they load their branded modifications on.
Hence if a phone is "locked" I presumed a carrier could cripple the use before a SIM card representing a customer account was installed and configured to operate the phone further.
I also know what rooting does but not the effects of any changes to UI afterwards. Again, its been my presumption that part of operating the device is added by a carrier using some kind of mobile development framework that may or may not be available after rooting.
Rooting doesn't change the framework. Its actually quite a simple concept: you add a superuser binary to the system ROM which the user has permission to execute. In order to control access to the binary, people generally install the superuser application off the market AFTER initially rooting their phone.
The trick is finding a way to write the new superuser binary to a read only file system.

[Q] Force USB-debugging to force activate dataconnection (not rooted phone)?

Hi,
I went abroad on vacation and turned off the data connection on my Nexus S (GT-i9023). While on vacation a friend figured out my pattern to unlock my phone. Because of that I changed the pattern and of course couldn't remember the new pattern which led to my phone getting locked. To unlock it I have to sign in to my Google account but like I wrote I turned of data connection before I went abroad so I can't log in to my Google acoount. =(
Is there a way to force activate data connection or WiFi without USB debugging enabled? If not, is there a way to force activate USB debugging and then force activate data connection or WiFi? If I can get either one of them working I guess I would be able to unlock the phone by entering my Google account information.
Is there another way of recovering my pictures and videos from the phone maybe? I really really would like to be able to save all pictures and videos that I took on my vacation up until I looked it out.
Please please help and thank you very much in advance!!
Is your phone rooted?
sent from my so icey ns4G
No it's not rooted.
Have you tried entering "null" without the quotes for your password?
Yes I have tried with null as password and with and without @gmail.com with my username.
I have tried to connect it with ADB but the device is not found. I don't think the USB-debugging is activated so I guess that's why I can't see it. Isn't there any tool to force activate USB-debugging or get around that somehow? Atleast then I would have a chance.
Please, any tips?
I also contacted Samsung support but the only answer i get from them is that i have to reset my phone or send it to them so they can reset it and I don't want to do that.
There must be a way? If I connect the usb-cable while in the boot menu I can see it in the device manager as "Android phone - Android ADB Interface". But if I type adb devices the "List of devices" ends up empty.
Is there really no way? I'm totally new to this but it doesn't make sense that there is no way what so ever to get a connection to the phone. Please help, I'll try anything.

WiFi HotSpot At&T LG G4 as source using custom rom gs4 to transmit.

I have a new AT&T Lg G4 with the latest updates. I have not activated it yet. I am using my Samsung GS4 with a custom rom on it. This rom allows me to use my hot spot free. I have a grand father unlimited data plan. I have been doing this for about 6 plus months. I use about 60 gig a month.
I have not found away to get my LG G4 to use the hot spot free (via. what I have read and tried nothing yet. since I have not activated it yet and don't want to until I have a plan). But I always found while reading there is no good way to do it reliably.
This is my question: Do you think if I connect my phones via usb and use the (now activated) LG G4 as my data source then turn on my (now deactivated) GS4 wifi hot spot. Would I in the end have a usable wi fi hot spot.
I have an AT&T unlocked, using it on MetroPCS with an unlimited plan. Unless you're using the phone on AT&T, the wifi hotspot will not work but I was able to enable it by modifying the settings.db with a SQ editor, and with some changes in the APN, it's now working. The data I use doesn't show on the hotspot usage, so I guess it's possible to use as much as you want.

Thank you, I will look more into how you did that. I don't know the details but with some work searching... When I was searching before I just never found someone saying it worked on the version I have.
LG G4 AT&T android version 5.1 Build number LMY47D Software version H81010o and finally Security software version MDF v1.1 Release 5.
I read some where that If I can't get the wi fi hot spot to work I could use the usb cable to connect to another device to share the internet. Well I know my GS4 can broadcast wi fi so I thought I would plug the lg g4 to the GS4 and create a hot spot that way.
I will look into what you talked about more. Thanks for your feed back. Greatly appreciate it.
Searching a lot tonight and I found this from another post; does this look like what you did or close to it?
https://pmf.silvrback.com/fixing-tethering-on-android-kitkat
1. Enable developer mode (Go to Settings -> About phone, and click on the build number until the developer mode is enabled).
2. Enable USB debugging under Settings -> Developer options
3. Connect the device with a USB cable to a computer with the Android SDK platform tools installed
4. Start an adb shell: adb shell
5. In the adb shell, run these commands one by one:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
settings put system tether_entitlement_check_state 0
reboot
The computer I am using at the moment is not a Windows OS so I can't try this yet. I am nervous about rooting this phone because I see so many posts about un-rooting. It looks like there are a lot of people who wished they did not root. Using the computer looks like I do not need to root to attempt this.
Anymore thoughts anyone?

Yeah, basically I changed the tether_entitlement_check_state value to 0 using a sq editor, but you do have to be rooted to do it directly through the phone. Rooting was fairly easy for me to do, I just flashed a rooted system.img over my stock system.img. If you follow all the steps you should have no issues. I really recommend rooting, since we have a locked bootloader we can't flash custom roms yet but with root you can at least install xposed framework.
That is good news. Thanks for helping me out.

It has been awhile. I finally connected my phone ADB shell and verified that my phone was recognized. It showed it but also said it is unauthorized. I wonder if that is why when I run the commands I get back that "settings" is not a recognized and an internal or external command. So this method failed so far. I am trying to avoid rooting my phone. I don't mind but right now I am holding off for an easier, less dramatic method. At least I hope one will be developed.
So far no luck with rooting or flashing any type of rom onto my LG G4.
But I have been taking the sim chip out of my LG G4 phone and sticking it into my GS4 phone (with the custom rom with hotspot working). I just connect my LG G4 to the internet with the wi/fi on it to the GS4. The original goal was to get both phones working at the same time so I can use one for a gps (without leaving that screen) and the other for msc. things while in the car. Play music, take calls through the car blue tooth, and other msc. stuff.

This no longer works after one of the updates for MM i think it was 1021 that disabled this work around. It may have just been MM itself. If you had done this before updating to MM it stuck but after installing MM it will not allow this to be entered. Source - Had this done on JB before updating to MM and it stuck. Got boot loop phone replaced came with MM on it and was unable to enable the hotspot. If you are on 1021 you can not downgrade to JB to enable it before updating back. You are SOL sorry. I really miss this feature.
Last night I powered off my GS4 to remove my chip from it, that I was using to use the WifFi hotspot. And placed it back into my LG G4 that does not have the hot spot available. To my surprise, phone booted and quickly displays it is going to reboot to install the latest firmware update. I never approved the update, it just displayed this. I quickly removed the batter before it could even shut down to start the update. The phone must have downloaded the update in the back ground when I was plugged in and connected to my wifi at home. I placed the battery back in and again it said it was going to reboot to install this firm ware update. There was nothing that I know of that I could do to prevent this. I tried to stop this just in cast someone figured out how to flash a custom rom on this build and software version.
On the side note. I'm not looking to change the direction of this forum, this info is just to share what I learned during this process after a few phone calls to AT&T. I have a 10 year old gran father contract with them. I asked about my unlimited plan and if it is ever throttled. Tech said that they do throttle these plans at 20 gb. and do not allow wifi hotspot on these plans. But they do allow wifi hotspot on the limited plans. They have a plan that at 16 gb they throttle you down to 125 kb/sec unless there is not much traffic through there service in the area. But! they do not shut down your internet service or charge you extra even after you go past your max paid for 16 gb plan. So that is only 4 gb difference between the unlimited plan and this 16 gb limited plan. With this 16 gb plan I now have wifi hotspot with no extra charge. The other thing I learned is that the unused data that was lower than 16 gb is carried over for one month. So if I had 4 gb left during this month, next month I get 16 gb + 4 gb = 20 gb data with out being throttled.
